Getting Weather Widget Back On iPhone Home Screen

2022-10-20 Thread Margaret Thomas

Good Evening, All:

I thought maybe I had reached enough of need to know on the learning
curve for my SE 2 that I could try a little want to know or curious
about things with the phone and had heard weather widget stack so many
times on my status bar that I decided to try to investigate widgets.

When I got the phone home from the Verizon store, it said   Cupertino
and the weather there and not my town and weather in the status bar that
was very annoying.  Several days
later, I asked my computer tech who was here for something else if he
could turn off raise to tap and he did and my town and weather were
magically in the status
bar instead of Cupertino when I looked at the phone when he left.  Maybe
he changed it which was helpful, but I have no idea what he did, so I
hadn't a clue about how to add a widget to the home screen.
Somehow, in my various phone misadventures, I inadvertently added maps
and photos under the weather widget and had a stack. At this stage, I
have almost no need of either of these two and thought I could remove
them from the stack and keep the very important weather widget. I read
a bunch of old posts and listened to a podcast by Thomas Domville on
"How to add, remove, and customize widgets in iOS" on Applevis, but
only found how to rearrange items in a stack and how to remove a stack.
I tried removing one of the widgets I didn't want and probably didn't
get far enough along to find a do you really want to delete this widget
and landed on delete stack instead.

an old post VoiceOver Quiz and Answers: Rita's iDevice Advice for
December 27, 2021
"51. What are Widgets and how do you add them to any screen of apps on
your iPhone?

Answer: How to Add Widgets to Your Home Screen. The extra widget
options you can add to your Home screen. Adding these can range from
fun, such as adding
featured photos, to useful, such as having the weather front and center
for your daily planning.
Note: These instructions were written for sighted persons, who are not
using voiceOver. If you are using VoiceOver: when the instructions say
"Tap on

an item", perform a one finger double tap.
1. Unlock your iPhone if it is locked.
2. Press your Home screen until the icons start to wiggle.
3. Tap the Add button in the top left corner.
4. Apple will suggest widgets. If your desired widget is there, tap it.
5. If you don't see the widget you want to add, scroll down or use the
search bar at the top of the feature.

6. Tap Add Widget.
7. Tap Done." in doesn't work for me. How can a blind person tell when
the icons start to wiggle? I have a hearing problem and can't get the
podcast by Thomas Domville on "How to add, remove, and customize widgets
in iOS" on Applevis to work either. He did something to get VO to
announce column numbers that I missed and my Today View on IOS 15.6.1
does not sound like his demonstration:

https://www.applevis.com/podcasts/how-add-remove-customize-widgets-ios

Also, I'm not clear about what size widget to choose to get all the
extras like barometric pressure when I double tap on the widget.

My weather app is on screen 2 of my Home screen.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can help me get weather back
prominently like it was before.

RE: I'm in the Market for a Small iPhone

2022-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm confused. What's meant by the iPhone 13 Mini becoming obsolete? I can't see
that it won't be able to run on cell networks for years, and it'll keep getting
IOS updates for at least as long as any other iPhone 13. This will almost
assuredly be for just one year less than the iPhone 14 models. Apple may not
have put out an iPhone 14 Mini but that doesn't mean they won't have something
comparable to the Mini down the road, and it doesn’t take anything whatsoever
away from the current iPhone 13 Mini. Unless you're looking for that extra year
of IOS updates, I don't see any reason not to go with an iPhone 13 Mini and
then choosing your next phone in a few years when you're ready. Who knows what
your options will be then. Sorry if I missed the point here.

Hi Evan,

Just to clarify some misinformation posted about the iPhone 13 Mini versus the
iPhone SE. I'm currently using the 13 Mini and my iPhone before it was the SE
2020. The SE 2020 has the same physical form factor as the iPhone 7 and 8 and
while the 13 Mini has a larger screen size than the SE, its physical form
factor is actually a bit smaller.

I'm not going to pretend to predict when these various models will be obsolete
but I believe the 13 Mini will be usable for a few more years. I can say that I
really like mine and don't think you can go wrong choosing it.

Good luck with your decision.

2022-10-20 Thread Evan Reese

Thanks Alan

,I don't think I'll be getting it next week, but I plan to take a trip
at the end of the year; so I do need to have it up and running by then
for sure.

I don't really need the absolute top of the line, but I figure that if
I'm going to get one, I do admit to feeling that it would be cool to get
a really nice one, especially if I can get it in a small package,
particularly since I hope to be using it for a good while, given that
these things are not cheap.

I'll let you know what I get.

Now have you looked at an iPhone SE? The 3rd edition just came out a few

Hey Guys,

I meant to mention that I saw an iPhone 13 Mini not too long ago that looked
like just the thing if I want a small model, but someone else told me that they
weren't making newer models of that one.

Is that true?

Thanks much.

Thanks Chris, I haven't looked at any models yet. I just thought I'd ask
here and see what people thought before I go out to the store.

Now have you looked at an iPhone SE? The 3rd edition just came out a few

I'm in the Market for a Small iPhone

2022-10-20 Thread Evan Reese

Hey Guys,

I'm familiar with iOS. I've been using an iPad Mini for over six years.
I've never owned an iPhone yet though, and I'm now looking for one to buy.

Even though I'm familiar with iOS, I'm not familiar with specific iPhone
models, and I'm in the market for one.

I want a small one. My manual dexterity is good, so I'm sure I can use
it.  But I don't want to sacrifice power or memory.

Could people tell me which models I should be looking for that are on
the smaller side?

Assume price is no object. I'm not saying that I'm gonna buy the most
expensive iPhone I can get, I'm just saying that I will look at prices
once I know what my best choices are for a small model.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Evan

Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?

2022-10-20 Thread Michael Irons
I would refuse to have an eSIM unless I was given a specific set of
instructions as to how to transfer the Sim between one found in another. I have
my old iPhone six which I would want to go to if my present iPhone gives me
problems. I would not want to be without that physical Sim card for right now.
Maybe for all times going forward.

I think, maybe the catch to Face ID is holding the phone at least ten inches
away from your face.

Speaking of the home button, it isn't getting used to no home button that is a
problem for me. I'm getting used to face ID and that is still somewhat of an
issue for me. Not having a home button, is no big deal. I just wish I could
still have touch ID instead of face ID.

I believe the SE models will have a home button as long as there’s a large
number of people making it down that they really have to be able to go home. Rip

Rip

And if all you have to do is transfer your e-SIM from your old iPhone to your
new one during the setup process of your new phone it would be just as easy
peasy.
I understand why people who make a living reviewing products have multiple
phones and want to transfer a SIM from one device to another a lot, but I never
understood why somebody would want to spend all that money to buy 2 or 3
high-end phones and use one this day or this week and another the next. I would
venture a guess and say that this is a pretty small minority among phone owners.
I haven't really read up on this, but I understand that transferring an e-SIM
from an old phone to a new one is a pretty easy and straight forward thing. I
actually switched to an e-SIM on my iPhone 11 because I wanted the physical SIM
tray to be available for when I travel to the Philippines with my wife. I
haven't bought a new phone since then so I didn't have to transfer said e-SIM.
Anyways, if there is an easy way to transfer an e-SIM between 2 or 3 devices
whenever one wants to do so then the argument about the physical SIM becomes a
mute point. From the little I did read all it may take is a QR code from your
carrier and then to scan said QR code to transfer the e-SIM and before I would
moon over the lack of a physical SIM I would certainly want to inform myself as
to how easy or not it is to switch e-SIMs between the devices I have.

I have had the same sim card now since my iPhone 5S. Each time I get a new one
I just pop the card out and put it in the new one. Easy peasy.

The sad reality is, every time Apple shows "courage " look out, it means that
somethings about to get taken away. Just like every time something is done in
the name of "safety" it usually means some right or liberty is about to get
taken away, that's as far as I'll go into that on this list though. Good luck
in being able to get the phone that you want with a Sim tray. For my part, I'm
going to hold onto my SE3 which is working quite nicely and suiting my needs.

Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?

2022-10-20 Thread Cara Quinn
Sieghard and all,

To be fair, I think this thread is actually relevant in that there have been
other discussions here about accessibility / bugs between iOS versions where
someone might actually feel like they want to move a sim to another phone
running a different OS for accessibility reasons. So I personally am finding
this topic super useful and informative.

Even for the accessibility of the physical process of switching sim cards that
some folks may not have done before; that kind of discussion would also be
appropriate here.

For myself, in using different phones for writing / testing software, I'll
occasionally switch sim cards but as has been said, that sort of situation is
not for everyone.

Anyway, regardless, the whole topic of esim vs sim can be valuable here, I
think.

Just my thoughts, and thanks for such a great discussion.

Cheers!

Cara

Hello Deidra,

All I can say that maybe it will be a better choice for you not to update to
the latest iOS version next time right away. Wait a few weeks and read what
people have to say.
Having said this I am not sure why some people seem to be having such issues
with dictation where most don't seem to have them. Yes, I do run into the issue
that instead of the magic tap ending dictation it will start whatever audio I
was playing last, but then usually a second 2-finger double tap will end
dictation Hopefully those who experience this will report it to Apple
Accessibility, but in any case, this also happened to me in iOS 15 so it's
certainly not a new bug introduced in iOS 16.
I would advise to upgrade to iOS 16.1 next Monday when it is released to the
public as this should clear up many issues which people still experience. Also,
if maybe something didn't go quite right with the original update and that is
the reason why you are having so many issues then doing this upgrade properly
may help. When I say properly I mean to do just a couple of things before the
upgrade:

1. Close all apps from the app switcher
2. As a minimum reboot your phone, I suggest you go to Settings > General >
Reset and select Reset Network Settings which also reboots, but it also clears
other things and may result in an improved pgrade experience. You do have to
re-enter your Wi-Fi password after doing this and go to Settings > General >
About and rename you riPhone to what you want, e.g. Diedre's iPhone" because
Reset Network Settings changes whatever name you had to just "iPhone".

After that do the update and once your iPhone boots up again and you sign in
use it for a few hours and then shut it down one more time and start it up
again.

Well I revert back to my 6S for sending text messages and things that require
more extensive dictation because I do not like hooking my phone up to a
Bluetooth keyboard mostly because I don’t care to have extra things lying
around and I don’t have a lot of extra surface workspace. So that’s
unfortunate. I’ve got an SE 2020 that doesn’t work so well since updating to
16. But it’s the phone I have phone service on so it’s the phone I use plus of
course can’t use the 6S with the version it has on it for many of the apps that
required updating, which is fine. I don’t mind updating but I do mind it when
it’s a buggy update!

RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?

2022-10-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

2022-10-20 Thread Kelly Pierce
Apple makes six variants of each version of the iPhone 14 lineup. The
different variants have unique cell phone frequencies for the region
of the phone. For example, American cell phone carriers use
frequencies used in no other part of the world. Outside the big metro
areas, carriers support fewer frequencies and in some rural areas only
one or two. While most people won’t notice much of a difference on a
two-week vacation, it could be the case where everyone around you has
signal but you in a given place because you have many fewer
frequencies to use on your device. Already on my carrier, staff
becomes upset when people swap SIM cards with different phones. That’s
because network services are attached to the unique serial number on
the phone. For example, 5G network services and frequencies are made
available to devices registered to have 5G technology. eSIM is the
future except in totalitarian regimes like the People’s republic of
China, where freedoms are limited.

I wouldn't say my son likes video description, but he does like it when
watching a movie with me. He's curious about what video description chooses
to describe, and he's interested in seeing how I experience a movie.

You are lucky to have such a wife. I have close friends who will not watch
a described movie with me because they hate description so much.

Well, my mom is not a fan of audio description at all. It’s too distracting
for her seeing as she can see. my dad doesn’t mind it, but I think he just
does it for the benefit of me or you know what benefits me sometimes. But I
do know subsided, people that enjoy it. One of my friends is an audio
describer technically being a reader that reads the audio description script
that was written for him I think he even does the Picard series. His name is
Roy Samuelson. He enjoys listening to audio description as well. He is fully

Apparently, if you want to buy the video, with full audio including audio
description, you need to buy it through Prime.
I personally am fine with just the free MP3 with no video but all the
sounds plus audio description. My wife who is sighted, isn't a big fan of

Are you saying that the episodes come with video only? No dialogue or

Wow!

I am so surprised given that the audio track is included on Amazon Prime

Given that the show was produced at the Amazon Studios, I guess I should

Like all of my other television series purchases from iTunes, I probably

RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?

Maybe those who really want a physical sim card should check out the new iPad
that was announced on Thursday. 10.9 inch with a physical SIM on those
units... much cheaper than an iPhone 14 pro max...

My guess is that eventually, SIM cards will be like analog - outdated. I am
sorry for those who feel that SIM cards are important, but as I keep telling my

Then you should not support Apple by buying a phone which does not meet your
requirements. Maybe if enough people do this Apple will put a SIM tray into the
iPhone 15 again although I personally probably wouldn't hold my breath. It
would seem that e-SIM is where ?Apple thinks the world is going or maybe where
they should go so they are giving it a helping hand.

Well said, Julian.

In addition, if I pay the same money for a product as those outside the US,
then I expect the same feature set. It really is that simple. To me, selling
a phone model that does not offer the same features but that costs the same
price as the enhanced model, is insulting.

Just my opinion, of course.

For what it's worth, some of us simply just enjoy the freedom of switching our
Sim card between phones without having to interact with our carrier. Remember
the good ole days of CDMA? Were you had to interact with the carrier and give
them your electronic serial number every time you wanted to switch phones? I
realize that eSIM is nowhere near as draconian, but still, some of us just
enjoy that freedom and enjoy that method and it should not be taken away from
us. Therefore, I fully understand why Mark wants to go through the trouble of
finding an iPhone 14 that still allows him the flexibility. Not that I'm
necessarily in the market for an iPhone 14, but, I will be watching this
discussion with interest. I'm certain that some of my clients will asked
similar questions so I would like to have good info to give them.

I chose not to do the betas since I only have one device.

RE: Mail item disappeared from my dock

2022-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't know why it disappeared, but you could find it in your Apps Library and
then move it back into the dock or onto a home screen. When you get to your
last home screen, do a three finger swipe left to get to the Appls Library. You
can then use the search field at the top of the screen, or after tapping
somewhere in the middle of the screen, do a three finger swipe up to
alphabetize the list. Once you find the app you're looking for, use the normal
VoiceOver gestures to move the app where you want.

Well, my mom is not a fan of audio description at all. It’s too distracting for
her seeing as she can see. my dad doesn’t mind it, but I think he just does it
for the benefit of me or you know what benefits me sometimes. But I do know
subsided, people that enjoy it. One of my friends is an audio describer
technically being a reader that reads the audio description script that was
written for him I think he even does the Picard series. His name is Roy
Samuelson. He enjoys listening to audio description as well. He is fully sided.

2022-10-20 Thread Carolyn
My guess is that eventually, SIM cards will be like analog - outdated. I am
sorry for those who feel that SIM cards are important, but as I keep telling my
husband, life goes on whether or not we do.

Re: downloading apps

2022-10-20 Thread Michael Feir
There's a setting specifically for deciding this. Go into the "Home Scren"
area of settings. There, you can choose whether newly downloaded apps are
added to your home screens or simply put in the library. Other settings in
there let you decide if notification badges are shown in the library as
well as in the home screen. You can also decide whether searches are shown
on the home screen. I believe this has to do with when you use spotlight
search. Hope that helps.

When I got my 13 pro max, I put in my sim card from my iPhone 8 for the first

downloading apps

2022-10-20 Thread martinnelson42
Hello: I have noticed that after downloading a new app from the app store
that it doesn't appear on any of my screens. I have to look for it in the
app library. Has anyone noticed this?

Thank you.

Re: Dictation in upcoming IOS version

2022-10-20 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I used to use dictation for text messages all the time. However,
since getting my Hable One, I don't use dictation any more. IOS 16
certainly has some bugs to work out.

Not to mention that more than half the time when you do the two finger double
tap to stop dictation, music starts playing. Overall, dictation under iOS 16.1
is definitely become a bit erratic. Despite many of us I am certain reporting
it to Apple via the Feedback app.
