RE: Apple Watch face input wanted

2023-08-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I use the Watch app on my iPhone, although if I remember right, it's all also
accessible on the watch, although I recall it being more tedious.

Actually Andy, no. VoiceVista is one of at least three new apps using the Soundscape code from Microsoft. OpenScape and SoundScape For Everyone are the other two that are both in beta. Hi there,

If I were you, I would check out the modular
face. I believe that has 6 complications. I
don't remember swiping between them, but it has
been forever since I have used it. i use the
infographic with 8 complications which you said
you did not want. It is somewhat easy to get to

A Question for Veteran iOS, iPAD OS Apple Music App VoiceOver Users

2023-08-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I have been an Amazon Music subscriber for about 2 years, now. When a song
is playing on any Alexa enabled device, I can say, "Alexa, I like this."
Alexa will reply with something like, "OK, Mark, got it."

Later, when I open the Amazon Music app on any device, there is an
automatically generated play list called something like "Mark's Favorites."

I have come to use this feature a great deal and, apparently, have begun
taking it for granted.

Now, as part of my Apple One subscription, I have started using my Apple
Music app on both my iPhone and iPad.

For the past few days, when various songs were playing, I said, "Siri, I
like this." Just like Alexa, Siri responds with, "got it." Upon hearing
this, I foolishly assumed that, like Alexa, some kind of playlist or station
would be populated with a list of the songs I specifically liked, during
playback. Wrong, wrong, wrong

Wow!

After conducting some extremely unsatisfying searches on the net, from what
I can tell, no automatically generated playlist is created by Siri. Then, I
read that one can tell Siri to add the currently playing song to a specific
playlist.

Then, I read that one can create smart playlists that, in effect, mimic the
functionality of Alexa.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that one cannot create smart playlists
via the Apple Music app on iPhone or iPad? Question: is this true??? If
so, it is crazy!!!

So, I am posting this in hopes that someone will correct the info I have
obtained or confirming it. And no, I do not want to create a shortcut in
order to create / manipulate playlists.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

RE: Apple Watch face input wanted

2023-08-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
PIM or personal information management, complications I like are reminders,
upcoming events and timers , but there's anything under the calendar, contacts,
and so on.

When you go to add a complication, only complications you can add in that
location will be shown as options. So when only a small complication will fit
then you'll only be shown small complications. The bigger trick is that a
complication may look differently in a space for a small complication then it
will for a space for a large complication. I don't know how to sort all of this
out except through trial and error, which is why I say you don't need to figure
it all out in one session. You can pick up some clues though, for example, if
you see that you have three complications across the bottom, like lower left,
lower center and lower right then you know these will be smaller complications.
Also, some complications that have a lot information in them, like events,
weather, activity, ..., will be able to display more when they go into a spot
for a larger complication.

Sorry that isn't a lot of help, but for me at least, the best way to figure
this out and settle on what you like is just by trial and error.

as messing around with different faces, a lot of faces won't let you add
certain complications in the places you want to add them. How can you figure
out what can go where without wasting a lot of time and then discovering that
it isn't available? Thanks for any input.

I've mentioned this before, but I do what Sieghard mentions below. I use the
modular face as my default face with mostly PIM complications on it. I also
have an activity face for obvious reasons. Finally, as we were traveling
around Durango Colorado, I added an infograph face with complications
related to weather and geography. Before I settled on these three I had half
a dozen or more faces on my watch, and I'd flip between them until I settled
on the three above.

This is another thing I'd suggest doing, specifically use the Watch app on
your phone and browse the faces until you see one that looks interesting
based on the number of complications and the information it comes with. You
can also pay attention to the description of it's appearance. Once you find
one that's interesting, spend a few minutes to set it up and then play with
it for a week or so. Try another one the following week and eventually
you'll settle on exactly what you're looking for. This is what I did, and I
thought it was kind of fun playing around with the different options to see
what I liked and I didn't like. I didn't try to do it all at once though.
Obviously not everyone is going to find this "fun!"

I used to use the Modular, but ever since Apple added the Infograph I have
been using it as it offers the most complications.
Of course you could use 2 or 3 watch faces and arrange them so that the main
one is in the middle and you either swipe left or right to get to the other
two which could be set up for more specific things like Health/workout or
home automation, but I prefer to have most of what I want on one
complication which for me includes of course the time, sunrise/sunset,
battery status, heart rate, the workout app and a few other apps like Apple
Home and the one for my store's alarm system.

RE: I Continue to Appreciate the Accessibility of Apple Home Kit

2023-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
A valid point, I think most of the high-end smart thermostats will have touch
screens, but then again you may not have to spend $300 if a $80 device does all
you want and has buttons. For me it's not such a big concern because while "Hey
Siri" or "Alexa" may not work without internet, "Hey Jackie" works really well
for me, she also responds to "Honey" and "Sweetie" so a definite bonus!
Of course now that we have the mini-split heat pump system where each of the 4
different indoor units has its own remote control (with buttons, not touch
screen) also helps. We still have an electric backup furnace which replaces our
old natural gas furnace and which is a central forced air system and it's still
connected to my old Honeywell T5, but we only need that if it gets to be around
-25 Celsius or colder when the air source heat pump is no longer efficient
enough and if I don't feel like lighting a fire in our wood stove.

Hello Sieghard,

Thank you for this information.

One complaint I have received from two totally blind list members is that the
Ecobee is a touch-surface-only device. While this is not a problem as long as
the internet connection is up and running, when down, the unit is completely
unusable by a blind person.

The model I purchased has hardware buttons that can control the unit without
the Wi-fi or Internet.

Although rare, there have been times when I’ve had OS hardware hick-ups and it
is good to be able to control the unit without a smart device, at hand.

Hi Richard,

While I am obviously not Mark and I don't know what he is using, I would take a
look at the Honeywell T9 and T10 and Ecobee is also Home Kit compatible and
seems to be very highly ranked in many reviews. Both the Ecobee and T9 can be
paired with remote sensors which you can put in other rooms.
Here is a good article which I found recently and which summarizes some of
these choices and more; the Ecobee premium also has a built-in microphone
which allows you to use Siri and Alexa directly from the thermostat which I
think might be quite nice. There is also one mentioned which is a connected
smart thermostat, but it has a knob like an old radio dial which allows you to
change the temperature on device..

Hello Everyone,

During the winter, I had a Home Kit compatible thermostat installed in my house.

I continue to truly appreciate the temperature control I now enjoy via iOS and
iPad OS.

Until I installed this thermostat, I either had to turn the A/C either on or
off. The old legacy thermostats was simply not accessible to me as a blind
person.

However, I recently began having Siri keep the house between 2 temperature set
points such as 78 to 82 degrees. It is wonderful. Now I know this is not a big
deal for sighted people but, until now, I have not enjoyed this capability,
completely independent of a sighted person.

When I am away from the house for any significant period of time, with the A/C
off, I tell Siri to turn the A/C on before I get home and the house is already
nice and cool.

Now I know this can be done with both Alexa and the Google assistant so I am
not promoting Siri over anything; I just continue to be amazed at the level of
accessibility that I never would have dreamed of 30 years ago.

Mark

RE: Apple Watch face input wanted

2023-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I used to use the Modular, but ever since Apple added the Infograph I have been
using it as it offers the most complications.
Of course you could use 2 or 3 watch faces and arrange them so that the main
one is in the middle and you either swipe left or right to get to the other two
which could be set up for more specific things like Health/workout or home
automation, but I prefer to have most of what I want on one complication which
for me includes of course the time, sunrise/sunset, battery status, heart rate,
the workout app and a few other apps like Apple Home and the one for my store's
alarm system.

RE: I Continue to Appreciate the Accessibility of Apple Home Kit

2023-08-06 Thread M. Taylor

RE: I Continue to Appreciate the Accessibility of Apple Home Kit

2023-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I think this brand was also mentioned in the iMore review I just posted.
I am also curious if anybody on the list has a mini-split heat pump system with
multiple indoor heads. We just installed such a system and it's fantastic as we
now get air conditioning as well as heating and with temperatures climbing
higher and higher each year it seems the air conditioning is definitely a nice
option. However, as there are 4 independent units in the house (bedroom and
living room upstairs as well as our guest bedroom and family/rec room
downstairs) a single thermostat somewhat defeats the purpose although I believe
you can link the units to various smart thermostats. At this point it's not a
critical issue because each unit comes with a remote control and for the most
part you just need to turn it on and then there is a toggle like a volume
rocker where you can turn the temperature up or down. Of course the temperature
is displayed on the remote so I haven't checked yet if an app like Seeing Ai
can read it.
There is also an app, the system is from the company Daikins, and while I have
figured out how to use the app it is certainly not what you could call
accessible. The installer helped me to figure it out, I was able to label a few
unlabelled buttons and the labels also seem to stick, so like I said, it's
useable for changing temperatures and so on, but I definitely still have to
contact the developer and see if they are open towards improving accessibility.
I assume it might be possible to link each unit's built-in thermostat to an
external smart thermostat, but if I needed to buy 4 smart thermostats that
could get pretty expensive. I am intriqued by the option to add room sensors to
the Ecobee Premium or the Honeywell T9, but I have to find out if it would be
possible for the Ecobee to then turn on any of the 4 indoor units independently
if it receives a signal from the sensor in that room That of course would be
amazing, but it might be too much to expect.

Best refgards,
Sieghard

Hello Richard,

Okay, I am posting the info to the model I purchased, below. This model was
suggested by V iPhone list member, James. It was the best purchase I've made
in years.

Mark

Original Post:
I’ve had a Sensi model st55 for 2 years now. Be sure you get this cheaper
$80.00, model available from Amazon. It has buttons that control selecting
heat or air conditioning and changing the temperature and more. It also works
with Alexa and there is an app for I Phone and I think, Android.
Note, the more expensive model is flat screen only. No buttons. The buttons
are important for a blind person to use the thermostat in case your internet
goes down.

The $80.00, thermostat with buttons is model ST55. Here is an Amazon link.

Re: Contacts Editor for iPhone iOS 17 or Other Recent iOS

2023-08-06 Thread Mike B.
Give this a try:

Go to the contact you want to delete, but don't open it or anything, only
highlight / select it.
The easiest way is to do a single finger triple tap on the contact and you
will find the Close context menu or delete button, or do a single finger
double
tap and hold on the contact and you get the same options. They're either
Close context menu or Delete.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers!

Because I inadvertently swept hundreds of unneeded entries from my Microsoft
Outlook email account into my iPhone contact listings, I need to delete
many, many contacts.

Is there a contact editor that will allow me to remove contacts from the
contacts list screen? As far as I can determine, the only way to remove a
contact in the native iOS is to open the contact and move down to the
delete button. That’s pretty time consuming and I hope for a faster way.

I will appreciate any assistance.

RE: I Continue to Appreciate the Accessibility of Apple Home Kit

2023-08-06 Thread M. Taylor

Mark

Is there a contact editor that will allow me to remove contacts from the

RE: Apple Watch face input wanted

2023-08-06 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The modular face is my go to face on my Apple Watch SE. It allows for six
complications. If I explore it by touch, it looks like there are three small
complications across the bottom, one large complication in the middle, two
small complications in the top corners and then the time at the top middle. The
middle larger complication would be good for things like activities or upcoming
events, things that would benefit from that extra space.
