Question though. I've still not done Face ID. Can I still go without using it
and enter a code, or will I be required to use face ID? I will be upgrading

Subject: Updating from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 15 Pro Max experience.

Hello friends.

Earlier yesterday here in the UK I received my new iPhone 15 Pro Max.

I was upgrading to this model from an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Once I booted the new device I was offered the choice of updating iOS to the
latest release which I did.

Once initial setup was completed including Face ID I chose to transfer the data
between the two devices.

This took no time at all and once completed my new device downloaded the apps
that were present on my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The only apps that required verification were financial apps like: HSBC ESET
Home Idmobile and so-on.

Once my new device was approved by these applications my iPhone 15 Pro Max was
up and running.

The two devices are not that dissimilar in size so orientation was not too big
a problem.

The new iPhone feels somewhat quicker in its response across all apps and using
a variety of voices with VoiceOver.

My initial findings are that the camera upgrade does not have an impact on the
apps we as blind people would typically use.

Apple made the transition between the two devices as trouble free as it could
have been and I am pleased with the upgrade process and the device itself.

Hope this may help someone.

Subject: Another example of Be My AI

Here is one more example of a Be My AI description. I took the picture first
with my Camera app as I wanted to send this to a few sighted friends and
include the picture along with the description Be My AI provided so I took the
picture, then tapped on "Share" and selected "Describe with Be My AI".

The picture is taken from our bedroom window through the window glass. What you
see is our backyard which has some lawn as well as a few still smaller fruit
trees on the right and on the left some raised garden beds where we grow stuff
like beans, peas, herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, strawbeerries, onions, kolrabi
and so on. Of course it is fall in northern BC so all of this is mostly done
except that we still have some parsly, peppermint, jives and so on in one
raised bed, but it's off the picture. We also have an 8 by 8 foot greenhouse
for tomatos, cucumbers, early and late lettuce and some herbs like basil,
rosemary and so on which in our climate do better there than outdoors. Anyways,
here is the description:

The picture shows a serene outdoor setting. In the foreground, there is a lush
green lawn with a few scattered leaves. On the right side are some small trees
and on the left side, there is a small greenhouse with a glass structure and a
wooden base. Next to the greenhouse, there is a raised wooden garden bed with
some plants. A green hose is snaking across the lawn.

In the middle ground, there is a wooden fence with a black tarp draped over
part of it. Behind the fence, there is a large, freshly tilled field that
appears to be ready for planting.

In the background, there are tall trees with leaves in shades of gold and
green, indicating that it might be autumn. Beyond the trees, there are a few
houses and structures. In the far distance, there are majestic mountains
partially obscured by clouds. The sky above is overcast.

One thing I would possibly question a little is the "lush" description in
connection with our lawn. It is relatively green, but we had a super dry summer
and due to water restrictions were not allowed to water the lawn so while now
we have more moisture at night due to humidity and temperatures in the mid
30's, it's green, but I wouldn't call it "lush".

The description of the greenhouse is spot on, it is probably 50 feet away and
the "wpooden base" did surprise me, but it is indeed built on 16-inch tall and
6 inch wide fir timbers which I did to make it not so low. What the description
didn't get is that it is sitting on a concrete pad.

The fence description is also correct, in fact I took one other picture before
this one and in that it even said that the fence appears to be new which is not
incorrect since it's made from cedar and I build it just last fall so the wood
still looks fairly fresh.

The bit about the tarp is also right on. I am still working on building a
double gate for the 10 foot opening in the fence and for now I put a long board
across the two posts and hung a tarp over that because behind our property is
an approx. 3 or 4 acre open field which belongs to a school just a few houses
down from us and they are currently in the process of establishing a soccre
field and green area around that.

Because of that large open space and the fact that due to the drought there are
hardly any berries in the mountains, we have a lot of black bears in town this
fall and while we just picked the rest of our apples yesterday, I don't want
them in the yard if possible. The tarp russles and crackles a bit when it's
windy which seems to work quite well to keep them out. Just in the past 3 days
our Ring doorbell camera captured one nice black bear walking across our
driveway in front of the house and a couple days earlier a Mama Bear with 3
babies in toe walked by around 3 during the night.

Anyways, the rest of the description is also correct, around that field in the
back ar tall poppler trees which are turning yellow now and you can see some
houses a couple of hundred metres away and then looking further across the
valley Hudson Bay Mountain which is a little over 8000 feet tall rises up and
by now it's got a bit of fresh snow on the top, but Be My AI didn't pick that
up because it may very well be obscured by the clouds today. There is probably
also some smoke from a nearby forest fire because it definitely smells smoky
out today.

Ok, I found the problem.

It turns out that the update turned on a setting that I haven't seen before.

If you go into accessibility settings and then go down to almost the bottom of
the screen you will find a button called Siri. If you click on that and then
go down to almost the bottom of the screen again you'll find a button called
"announce notifications on speaker". It is a switch button. Mine was on. I
turned it off and now my phone behaves as I prefer again. It wakes the phone
and VO reads the incoming message to me.

I am seeing a situation where most messages that come in wake the phone and

a different message sound than I have set for messages and it doesn't wake the
phone and Siri reads the message anyway. This is starting to bug me. I have
looked all over the settings and can't find anything that would cause this
behavior and can't find a way to make it behave the way it used to.

Has anyone else seen this and if so does anyone know how to stop it?

I am using an Iphone SE2020.

There is probably
also some smoke from a nearby forest fire because it definitely smells smoky
out today.

Here’s a partial view of the courtyard at my apartment complex.

The picture shows a cozy outdoor area. In the foreground, there are three palm trees with long, slender trunks and large, arching fronds. The ground is covered with small plants and mulch. To the left, there is a narrow concrete walkway
leading to a metal gate. The gate is silver and has vertical bars. Beyond the gate, you can see a glimpse of a swimming pool with turquoise water, surrounded by more palm trees. The walls on either side of the walkway are textured, and the one on the right
is adorned with a small rectangular window. The area looks like a small garden or courtyard in a residential setting. The sunlight is filtering through the palm fronds, casting shadows on the walkway.

the third is also red but with a white pickguard, the fourth is a natural wood color acoustic guitar, the fifth is a sunburst color with a white pickguard, and the sixth is a natural wood color with a black pickguard.

Below the guitars, on the floor, there are three amplifiers and a black backpack. The amplifier on the left is the largest and has a black exterior with two speakers. The middle amplifier is smaller and also
black with a single speaker. The amplifier on the right is black and similar in size to the middle one but has a label that reads "GK GALLIEN-KRUEGER". The black backpack is placed between the left and middle amplifiers. The carpet is gray and the walls are

Pretty useless compared to what Be My AI gives you and I can definitely say this with confidence since I know that what Be My AI described is for the most part not just close but dead on and what Picture Smart gave me gives me a very vague
indication that it's probably an outdoor shot with sky, trees, plants and some sort of building, not sure where the water reference comes from since there is no water in sight unlers to the water which one would assume is in the hose Be My AI described, but
 which Picture Smart didn't mention.

The amount of detail you get from Be My AI when you take a picture of a photo, painting or even just a room is amazing.
I just randomly snapped a picture towards one side of our bedroom the other day and here is what Be My AI described:

The picture shows a cozy room with wooden flooring. On the left side, there is a wooden dresser with five drawers and a small TV on top of it. The wall above the dresser is plain with a light gray color.

On the right side, there is a window with a white horizontal blind. The window has a wooden frame that matches the color of the dresser.

In the bottom right corner, there is a wooden chair with armrests and a cushioned seat with a patterned fabric. There are clothes draped over the back of the chair.

In the bottom center of the picture, there is a dog lying on a gray mat. The dog is light-colored, possibly a Labrador or a similar breed. Next to the dog, there is an orange toy.

The room appears to be well-lit with natural light coming from the window.

All of the above is spot on including the fact that I do have a yellow, almost white labrador guide dog.

The only "incorrect" description is the small TV, it is in fact my open laptop on top of the dresser. But I was holding the phone at about hip height when I was lying on my bed and the dresser is a bit higher, only the screen would be visible
 and not the keyboard.

by clouds. The sky above is overcast.

One thing I would possibly question a little is the "lush" description in connection with our lawn. It is relatively green, but we had a super dry summer and due to water restrictions were not allowed to water the lawn so while now we have
more moisture at night due to humidity and temperatures in the mid 30's, it's green, but I wouldn't call it "lush".
The description of the greenhouse is spot on, it is probably 50 feet away and the "wpooden base" did surprise me, but it is indeed built on 16-inch tall and 6 inch wide fir timbers which I did to make it not so low. What the description
didn't get is that it is sitting on a concrete pad.
The fence description is also correct, in fact I took one other picture before this one and in that it even said that the fence appears to be new which is not incorrect since it's made from cedar and I build it just last fall so the wood
 still looks fairly fresh.
The bit about the tarp is also right on. I am still working on building a double gate for the 10 foot opening in the fence and for now I put a long board across the two posts and hung a tarp over that because behind our property is an approx.
3 or 4 acre open field which belongs to a school just a few houses down from us and they are currently in the process of establishing a soccre field and green area around that.
Because of that large open space and the fact that due to the drought there are hardly any berries in the mountains, we have a lot of black bears in town this fall and while we just picked the rest of our apples yesterday, I don't want
them in the yard if possible. The tarp russles and crackles a bit when it's windy which seems to work quite well to keep them out. Just in the past 3 days our Ring doorbell camera captured one nice black bear walking across our driveway in front of the house
and a couple days earlier a Mama Bear with 3 babies in toe walked by around 3 during the night.
Anyways, the rest of the description is also correct, around that field in

with two speakers. The middle amplifier is smaller and also black with a single
speaker. The amplifier on the right is black and similar in size to the middle
one but has a label that reads "GK GALLIEN-KRUEGER". The black backpack is
placed between the left and middle amplifiers. The carpet is gray and the walls
are painted in a light beige color. On Sep 25, 2023, at 1:18 PM, Sieghard

The picture is taken from our bedroom window through the window glass. What you

like beans, peas, herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, strawbeerries, onions, kolrabi

except that we still have some parsly, peppermint, jives and so on in one
raised bed, but it's off the picture.

It is relatively green, but we had a super dry summer
and due to water restrictions were not allowed to water

There is some reason to be upset. As users, we should all be able to use our
best judgment about whether or not to show images of people. The developer
decision to restrict the information we receive from the app seems
paternalistic and condescending.

Just in the past 3 days
our Ring doorbell camera captured one nice black bear walking across our
driveway in front of the house and a couple days earlier a Mama Bear with 3
babies in toe walked by

2023-09-25 Thread Tom Lange
Here’s a partial view of the courtyard at my apartment complex. The picture shows a cozy outdoor area. In the foreground, there are three palm trees with long, slender trunks and large, arching fronds. The ground is covered with small plants and mulch. To the left, there is a narrow concrete walkway leading to a metal gate. The gate is silver and has vertical bars. Beyond the gate, you can see a glimpse of a swimming pool with turquoise water, surrounded by more palm trees. The walls on either side of the walkway are textured, and the one on the right is adorned with a small rectangular window. The area looks like a small garden or courtyard in a residential setting. The sunlight is filtering through the palm fronds, casting shadows on the walkway. And here’s a glimpse of my music room. The picture shows a room with a collection of guitars and amplifiers. There are six guitars hanging on the wall. From left to right, the first guitar is a sunburst color with a white pickguard, the second is red with a black pickguard, the third is also red but with a white pickguard, the fourth is a natural wood color acoustic guitar, the fifth is a sunburst color with a white pickguard, and the sixth is a natural wood color with a black pickguard.Below the guitars, on the floor, there are three amplifiers and a black backpack. The amplifier on the left is the largest and has a black exterior with two speakers. The middle amplifier is smaller and also black with a single speaker. The amplifier on the right is black and similar in size to the middle one but has a label that reads "GK GALLIEN-KRUEGER". The black backpack is placed between the left and middle amplifiers. The carpet is gray and the walls are painted in a light beige color. On Sep 25, 2023, at 1:18 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Hi Alan,

Hmm, maybe I should write a book consisting of Be My AI desdcription and my
intelligent comments 藍
If you don't like your current book, try "Mad Honey" by Jodi Picoult, just
listening to it from Audible and it's very good as are all of her books.
If you want something she wrote which is a bit more controversial, try "Small
Great Things" or "The Storyteller" or "Nineteen Minutes".

like beans, peas, herbs, cauliflower, broccoli, strawbeerries, onions, kolrabi

I took a picture while I was at the SoFi Stadium this weekend for a concert,
this is what I got.

The picture shows the interior of a large stadium with a transparent roof,
allowing natural light to enter. The stadium is named "SoFi Stadium" as seen on
a large, oval-shaped screen hanging from the ceiling. This screen is displaying
advertisements for Ed Sheeran and Ticketmaster, along with some visuals in red

And I'd say it's a huge improvement over no description which is what we had
before.
Here is what Jaws picture smart gave me for the outdoor photo I posted the
description for:

This tag describes the photo
Sky.
These tags probably describe the photo
Building, Plant, Slope, Tree, Water.
These tags possibly describe the photo
Landscape, Stairs, Trunk, Urban design.

Pretty useless compared to what Be My AI gives you and I can definitely say
this with confidence since I know that what Be My AI described is for the most
part not just close but dead on and what Picture Smart gave me gives me a very
vague indication that it's probably an outdoor shot with sky, trees, plants and
some sort of building, not sure where the water reference comes from since
there is no water in sight unlers to the water which one would assume is in the
hose Be My AI described, but which Picture Smart didn't mention.

The picture shows a cozy room with wooden flooring. On the left side, there is
a wooden dresser with five drawers and a small TV on top of it. The wall above
the dresser is plain with a light gray color.

On the right side, there is a window with a white horizontal blind. The window

In the bottom right corner, there is a wooden chair with armrests and a

In the bottom center of the picture, there is a dog lying on a gray mat. The
dog is light-colored, possibly a Labrador or a similar breed. Next to the dog,

The room appears to be well-lit with natural light coming from the window.

All of the above is spot on including the fact that I do have a yellow, almost

But it did say "cozy room" and in the other example I just posted, it described
the picture as a "serene outdoor setting", it also mentions "magestic
mountains" so definitely descriptive and somewhat subjective terms. Not
everybody would describe the coast range here as "magestic", maybe "rugged" as
it's more wildenress than anything else, but the mountains are typically no
more than 8000 or 9000 feet so not exactly like 12,000 or 15,000 foot peaks.
But hey, I'm not complaining and even though my guide dog is almost 10 years
old, most people still call him cute or adorable when he comes with his toy in
his mouth etc. so there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

Another example of Be My AI

2023-09-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

There is probably
also some smoke from a nearby forest fire because it definitely smells smoky
out today.

If you continue to swipe right you will find the following settings:

Predictive
Smart Punctuation

You primarily would want to turn off auto correction, predictive and maybe

In an attempt to improve my writing and perhaps to assist others, I am at long
last playing around with functions such as autoCorrect and Predictive text. I
really don’t get autoCorrect. In Notes on my 12 pro still running iOS16,
sometimes I get a bubble, mostly I don’t. It doesn’t seem like AugoCorrect in
Word, where its purpose is to correct whole words. I guess it uses the keyboard
dictionary, which I believe to be uneditable. I make an intentional error and
hear nothing. If I hear a bubble, and this can happen in the middle of a word,
I’m not entirely sure what to do. I also gather it is good to turn Spoken
Content on in General Accessibility settings, but this isn’t a VoiceOver
setting, so I don’t understand the interplay of the settings. I received a
document from Apple Disability Support which didn’t answer my questions.

Can anybody enlighten me about all this?

Re: Be My AI soon available for Be My Eyes users on iOS

2023-09-25 Thread Evan Reese
I noticed that the description did not contain any of those subjective
elements such as "adorable" dog with "soulful" eyes or whatever that was
that another recent poster sent over. I think that is to the good.

The amount of detail you get from Be My AI when you take a picture of
a photo, painting or even just a room is amazing.

I just randomly snapped a picture towards one side of our bedroom the
other day and here is what Be My AI described:

The picture shows a cozy room with wooden flooring. On the left side,
there is a wooden dresser with five drawers and a small TV on top of
it. The wall above the dresser is plain with a light gray color.

On the right side, there is a window with a white horizontal blind.
The window has a wooden frame that matches the color of the dresser.

In the bottom right corner, there is a wooden chair with armrests and
a cushioned seat with a patterned fabric. There are clothes draped
over the back of the chair.

In the bottom center of the picture, there is a dog lying on a gray
mat. The dog is light-colored, possibly a Labrador or a similar breed.
Next to the dog, there is an orange toy.

The room appears to be well-lit with natural light coming from the window.

All of the above is spot on including the fact that I do have a
yellow, almost white labrador guide dog.

The only "incorrect" description is the small TV, it is in fact my
open laptop on top of the dresser. But I was holding the phone at
about hip height when I was lying on my bed and the dresser is a bit
higher, only the screen would be visible and not the keyboard.

Announcing Be My AI with a screenshot of the app demonstrating Be My
AI's describing capabilities

Hi dennis,

We are thrilled to announce that Be My AI will soon be available to
hundreds of thousands of Be My Eyes users on iOS devices worldwide!

Thanks to the tremendous work of over 19,000 beta testers and the team
at Be My Eyes, we’re moving to an open beta phase and releasing Be My
AI to our

iPhone users starting this week. Over the next few weeks we will be
adding more and more users every day, so that soon everyone using an
iOS device will

have direct access to our new AI-powered feature. Make sure to keep
your app updated.

While using Be My AI is not intended to replace a white cane or a
guide dog, using it in your everyday life is powerful, quick and
simple. Once you have

access, open the Be My Eyes app, click on the ‘Be My AI’ tab, and take
a picture of just about anything. Be My AI will give you a detailed
description

of it, and you can chat and ask further questions to get more
information. Be My AI is available now in any of 19 languages, with
more to come.

And don’t worry - if Be My AI can’t answer all your questions, if you
want to check its results, or if you just need a little more
assistance than Be My

AI can provide, you still can easily reach one of our dedicated
volunteers, just like before.

You can

learn more about Be My AI and how to use it in our new blog post

or by visiting the

Help Center

on our website.

This global release of Be My AI into an open beta test means that
hundreds of thousands of people will now be able to experience this
exciting new tool.

Make sure to share the news with your friends, family and colleagues!

Right now we’ll only be releasing Be My AI with users who use iOS
devices. But Android users fear not. We are currently in a closed beta
test of Be My

AI on Android devices, and we hope to make it more broadly available
for open beta testing in the coming months. If you are interested in
joining the Android

beta test, you can already

sign up for the Android waitlist

in the Be My Eyes app.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at

supp...@bemyeyes.com.

And happy exploring!

P.S: Do you know another blind or low-vision person who can benefit
from this new feature? Make sure to forward this email to them and
invite them to try out Be My AI on the Be My Eyes app!

Thank you!

Mike, CEO of Be My Eyes

Thanks, Kelly. So with regard to the screen on the 15 Pro, how is it for
typing. I’m probably one of the few people who still tap taps with one finger
on the keyboard, and after all this time with this phone, I’ve gotten fairly
good at it. so I’m just curious about the size of the screen and how long it’s
taking you to adjust, unless of course you’re using braille or an external
keyboard.

Hello,

What you need to do is go into settings, accessibility, spoken content, and
then turn auto correct on. Then it will announce what is in the bubble you
hear. When you hear the word, press the spacebar to activate or put it in your
document. Hope this helps.

I have only used Shortcuts a little for some simple stuff, but I think it is a
fairly powerful feature and I would say it should be possible to do what you
describe, but I can't give you step by step instructions for it.

I’ve never really played around with shortcuts so don’t’ know if it’s either
possible or if a shortcut already exists, but could you set something up where
you can say something like “describe image” and have a photo taken and
subsequently activate the BeMyAI feature wihtout having to open the BeMyEyes
app or go into the sharesheet to select the same option? That or tie such a
shortcut to the new action button skipping the voice prompt all together?

The amount of detail you get from Be My AI when you take a picture of a photo,
painting or even just a room is amazing.
I just randomly snapped a picture towards one side of our bedroom the other day
and here is what Be My AI described:

The picture shows a cozy room with wooden flooring. On the left side, there is
a wooden dresser with five drawers and a small TV on top of it. The wall above
the dresser is plain with a light gray color.

On the right side, there is a window with a white horizontal blind. The window
has a wooden frame that matches the color of the dresser.

In the bottom right corner, there is a wooden chair with armrests and a
cushioned seat with a patterned fabric. There are clothes draped over the back
of the chair.

In the bottom center of the picture, there is a dog lying on a gray mat. The
dog is light-colored, possibly a Labrador or a similar breed. Next to the dog,
there is an orange toy.
The room appears to be well-lit with natural light coming from the window.

All of the above is spot on including the fact that I do have a yellow, almost
white labrador guide dog.
The only "incorrect" description is the small TV, it is in fact my open laptop
on top of the dresser. But I was holding the phone at about hip height when I
was lying on my bed and the dresser is a bit higher, only the screen would be
visible and not the keyboard.

Predictive
Smart Punctuation

You primarily would want to turn off auto correction, predictive and maybe

Where do you turn off Predictive Text, please?

I personally cannot stand predictive text. If you want to try autocorrect,
turn off predictive text so you are dealing with one feature.

Supposedly, if there is a misspelled word, you can turn the rotor to misspelled
words and I believe it is a flick left to land on the suggestions.

I'd consider contacting Apple Accessibility.

Hello,

What you need to do is go into settings, accessibility, spoken content, and
then turn auto correct on. Then it will announce what is in the bubble you
hear. When you hear the word, press the spacebar to activate or put it in your
document. Hope this helps.

RE: Be My AI soon available for Be My Eyes users on iOS

2023-09-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

But I was holding the phone at about hip height when I
was lying on my bed and the dresser is a bit higher, only the screen would be
visible and not the keyboard.

detection, instant text recognition using the magnifier app etc. App developers
can potentially use this and I like having it.
15 Pro has the new action button which you can program to answer/hang up calls,
trigger the camera and more, regular iPhone 15 does not have it. This is one of
the features why I definitely would go for a Pro
15 Pro has the latest A17 chip, the regular iPhone 15 has last year's A16
chip. In real life this will make little or no difference, however.
15 Pro has a better camera (Pro phones always do, whether this might be a good
thing or not for a blind person is questionable)
15 Pro has a Titanium frame instead of a stainless steel frame which the older
Pro phones have. That is noticeable if you compare, for example an iPhone 14
Pro (206 grams) or 13 Pro (204 grams) and an iPhone 15 Pro (187 grams). It is a
difference of around 20 grams which is around ¾ of an ounce.
Of course keep in mind that the regular 15, 14 and so on have an aluminum frame
and not a stainless steel frame and the regular phones are typically slightly
lighter than the Pro phones. In case of the iPhone 15 (171 grams) and the
iPhone 15 Pro (187 grams) that difference is 16 grams which is actually just
over half an ounce or like a tablespoon of water and holding both phones that
will probably be noticeable.
If you went from an iPhone 13 Pro or 14 Pro to a regular iPhone 15 the weight
difference is well over an ounce and would be very noticeable, but that upgrade
does not make all that much sense especially not if you had a 14 Pro which as
the same processor as the regular 15, but with the 14 Pro you have LiDAR which
you would lose going to a 15. If you don't ever use it it's not a big deal, but
if you do it would probably be something you miss.
Once again I feel an upgrade is really justified if you have an iPhone 11 or 11
Pro or older, definitely if you have an iPhone 8 or older, but then you still
have to decide if you want to spend very big bucks to go to a 15 Pro since by
now an iPhone 8 would be worth only maybe $150 if you sold it. If your phone
needs upgrading but you can get by for another 2 months I think waiting for
Black Friday/Cyber Monday is the way to go, by then we'll know how well the new
phones really sell and if providers and stores still have phones like the 13
Pro in stock you would most likely find some very smoking good deals, but even
a 14 or 14 Pro then would be available for a much better deal than right now.

RE: Pro vs Max

2023-09-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The screen on the 15 Pro and your XR is the same 6.1 inches. Of course your XR
I am pretty sure still has an LCD screen whereas the 15 Pro has an OLED screen.
As for actual size, the iPhone 15 Pro is slightly smaller due to the fact that
nowadays the bezzels are smaller which allows you to put the same size screen
on a slightly smaller phone.
This is also indicated by the percentage of screen-to-body ratio which is part
of the information below:

iPhone XR
Screen: 6.1 inches, 90.3 cm² (79.0% screen-to-body ratio)
Body: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3 mm (5.94 x 2.98 x 0.33 in)
Weight: 194 grams (6.84 oz)

iPhone 15 Pro
Screen: 6.1 inches, 91.3 cm² (88.2% screen-to-body ratio)
Body: 146.6 x 70.6 x 8.3 mm (5.77 x 2.78 x 0.33 in)
Weight: 187 g (6.60 oz)

iPhone 15 Pro is smaller than the XR by the following measurements:
Height: 4.3 mm (that is right in between an eighth of an inch and a quarter
inch, to be exact it is very close to 3/16 of an inch.
Width: 5.1 mm which is even slightly more of a difference in width, still not
quite a quarter of an inch, but fairly close and it would be noticeable.
Thickness: same/no difference
Weight: 15 Pro is 7 grams lighter, that is sort of like 2 teaspoons of salt and
you would be hard pressed to notice that.

Thanks, Kelly. So with regard to the screen on the 15 Pro, how is it for
typing. I’m probably one of the few people who still tap taps with one finger
on the keyboard, and after all this time with this phone, I’ve gotten fairly
good at it. so I’m just curious about the size of the screen and how long it’s
taking you to adjust, unless of course you’re using braille or an external
keyboard.

Re: Pro vs Max

2023-09-25 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi Mary,

The screen on this 15 Pro is pretty much, the same as it was as far as size on
the 10 R. For me, who does most of my typing with the touch keyboard on the
phone, it has been the same as typing on the iPhone XR. Those really been no
change in the experience, so no time to adapt.

As I mentioned, part of the driving factor for me, upgrading, was planning for
next year‘s releases. I didn’t want to find myself in the case of feeling
compelled to buy the iPhone 15 Pro next summer, just to use the new operating
systems, knowing there’d be a new model of the phone out in a few months at
that point.

Thanks, Kelly. So with regard to the screen on the 15 Pro, how is it for
typing. I’m probably one of the few people who still tap taps with one finger

2023-09-25 Thread Dan

Ok, I found the problem.

It turns out that the update turned on a setting that I haven't
  seen before.

If you go into accessibility settings and then go down to almost
the bottom of the screen you will find a button called Siri.  If
you click on that and then go down to almost the bottom of the
screen again you'll find a button called "announce notifications
on speaker".  It is a switch button.  Mine was on.  I turned it
off and now my phone behaves as I prefer again.  It wakes the
phone and VO reads the incoming message to me.

But since 17.0 some messages are coming in with a different
message sound than I have set for messages and it doesn't wake
the phone and Siri reads the message anyway.  This is starting
to bug me.  I have looked all over the settings and can't find
anything that would cause this behavior and can't find a way to
make it behave the way it used to.

Has anyone else seen this and if so does anyone know how to

Re: Pro vs Max

2023-09-25 Thread Lisa Belville

Mich,

I upgraded from a 12 Pro to a 14 Pro.  My reasoning was that there
wasn't really anything I needed on the 15 model.  yes, it has a better
camera, but for the purposes of OCR and general photos it didn't matter
to me.

It is a bit thinner than my old 12 Pro.  coming from an iPhone 8 the 14
would be a huge improvement.

Oh, and my carrier gave me $700 off on my trade in, so I have just under
$300 for the 14 Pro, which I will probably pay off long before the three
years is up.

Even paying taxes, you're still getting a good deal and the 14 will be
able to take updates for several years.

Also, the lightening cables still work with it, though I did have to get
a USBC charging brick.

Hi Mary,

I went with the newer phone now, because as I understand it next summer, I
won’t be able to update to the next version of iOS and if that’s going to be
the case, I decided I would get the newer model as early as possible because I
like to run test versions of the next OS release.

I will say the one other thing that I have noticed in how I use my phone that
is faster is the results of dictation being processed if I use the phone
dictation feature for text input.

I am generally someone who likes to keep my existing phone until I’m no longer
able to update the operating system. I had used my iPhone 5S until I bought the
10R.

I am told that pictures from the 15 are visually noticeably better, but I don’t
really have a way to quantify that. I mean, yes, I understand the megapixels
and such as far as the technical specifics. I don’t know yet, if that
translates to more detail when using the various artificial intelligence
services to describe photos.

In fact the iPhone 8 models will not take iOS 17. That’s why I am replacing my

I’ll probably try to get that order completed later today.

 Hello everyone,

First of all, I have really appreciated reading the thoughts, and
opinions on the new phones. As well as peoples experiences with
them, in the stores. I always find this sort of stuff helpful.

I am considering upgrading my phone. At first, I wasn't going to do
it. I love my 12 mini. It's smaller, and pretty easy for me to hold.
It still works quite well, and I really don't have any issues with it.

However, I get my phone service with T-Mobile. If I were to upgrade
now, it would be better for me, then if I were to wait another year or so.
Right now, I can trade in this phone, and it will help go toward the
cost of my next phone. I really don't want to have to trade in this
phone. But this is the way I have to go about these sorts of things,
if I ever want to upgrade.

My battery in my phone is degrading. I actually have a service
message on it, that states that I need to replace the battery. So I
could do that, and use this phone for longer. But a part of me
thinks that it is just better to go ahead and do the upgrade instead.

I would be interested to hear what people think about this. I know
 some of this

I could think of several Hundred reasons why I wouldn't get an iPhone Pro Max 1
Tb, in fact, compared to an iPhone 15 Pro 128 Gb it's probably a thousand
reasons!

Sieghard,

Thank you for the biggest, laugh out loud moment, I've had all week.

Know what? You are absolutely right (big, big smile).

I am going to grab one next week. I am going to do my best to stick with a 15
Plus but I'll probably get the Pro Max. If I get a Pro Max, I will do my best
to stick with a 256GB but, I don't know. I might have to get the 1TB. Old
habits are so difficult to break (smile).

Again, thank you for the wonderful reply and for truly making my day.

Mark

You may as well go and get one since your "perhaps I'll get a 15 Pro Max" means
"I may not want to say it now, but I'll definitely get one in a couple of days"

Hello All,

I first sent this message to the list, yesterday, Friday, at around 12-noon,
local time but the mailing list servers were down.

So, I am posting this again, now.

Original Message Posted on Friday, September 22, 2023:

Hello All,

Well, I spent 3 hours in the Apple Store this morning with both a 15 Plus and a
15 Pro Max running iOS 17.

As for the physical devices? They definitely weigh less than the 14 series.

I am happy to report that I could not reproduce any of the VoiceOver problems
discussed on the list, of late.

For example, the single-finger, double-tap problem simply does not exist on the
15 models I tested.

I had a friend of mine, the executive manager of the store, download a few
third-party apps such as Amazon, Libby, and Yelp. To my delight, VoiceOver
functioned just as expected.

Of course, I was not able to test VoiceOver functionality with my personal
primary third-party app; so in no way am I suggesting that my testing was
definitive or comprehensive.

However, I can say that my first experience with iOS 17 was a good one.

I was delighted to discover that while there were hundreds of preorder
customers waiting in-line, outside the location, the store had plenty of iPhone
15 models, in all four major categories, ready to be purchase by those of us
who did not preorder.

I wasn't planning on buying a 15 but I have to admit that I really, really like
that new action button, featured on the Pro models. Perhaps I'll pick up a 15
Pro Max in the next week or so, after I've given it some thought.

I did, however, purchase a set of wired Ear Pods with the USBC connector and
the USBC to Lightning adaptor so that I can continue to use my already
purchased Lightning Ear Pods with USBC devices. It's all about "baby steps"
(smile).

Your Brother in the Journey,

Mark
