iPhone Photos

2023-10-26 Thread Tom Cramer
Hello,
I have been using the new Be My AI service and it has been great at
describing all of the photos in my photos app.
Is there a way to either label or rename these photos now that I know
what they are so that I can find them easier? I would think there
would have to be an easy way of labeling them but ca't see how.
Thanks.

Widgets

2023-10-26 Thread William Outman
I am noticing what appear to be widgets on my new 15 Pro phone. I feel they are
not of much use to me as a total. Are there some that exist by default? Am I
accidentally creating them and if so how, and how do I find and get rid of
them?

Just a bit more info, but when you pull up the App Store, you need to tap on
the Search tab in the lower right hand corner. The search field is at the top
of the screen, and it's labeled "Games, Apps, Stories and More" so it's easy to
miss that it's a edit field, since you have to listen to all of that before you
hear that it's an edit field.

Be My AI, the first-of-its-kind digital visual assistant powered by GPT-4, was
mentioned amongst the Time Best Invention of 2023

thanks to the collaboration between Be My Eyes and OpenAI. The annual list
features the most groundbreaking inventions, including new products and ideas,
that TIME editors have identified as "life changing".

"Be My Eyes is proud to be mentioned among the brilliant innovations included
in TIME's Best Inventions 2023 list with Be My AI. This new tool is providing
people who are blind or have low vision with a better way to address everyday
needs and acquire tools and visual descriptions never before possible," said
Michael Buckley, CEO of Be My Eyes. "We are grateful to TIME for this
incredible recognition, as we work to create a more accessible world for people
of all abilities."

This acknowledgment comes after a week from Be My Eyes' celebrations for
officially reaching 1,000,000 chats on Be My AI. As of today, over 5,500 blind
people are accessing Be My AI every day, asking over 30,000+ questions daily to
the AI-powered tool.

"The new feature of having an AI assistant, specifically Be My AI, has truly
been a game-changer for me. It allows me to experience the world in a whole new
way by providing detailed descriptions of various things," says Malak, who has
been beta testing Be My AI since March. "Thanks to Be My AI, I now have the
ability to enjoy visual experiences and share moments in ways that were once
unimaginable. Be My Eyes' contribution has made a significant impact on our
lives, and we are incredibly thankful for their invaluable support."

Be My AI is currently available for all Be My Eyes users on iOS. We have
already started closed beta testing Be My AI for Android devices and our goal
is to move it to broadly-available open beta status in the coming months. It is
already possible to sign up on the waitlist for Android beta testing in the Be
My Eyes app.

2023-10-26 Thread Mike Arrigo
I’m glad the Iphone I have still uses a physical sim card so I can easily
switch between my Iphone SE and my Pixel 7, I do think Apple removed the
physical sim tray too soon, currently there is no easy way to transfer your
ESIM between an Iphone and Android without contacting the carrier. For most
things both platforms are equal and the accessibility of Android has definitely
come full circle. It’s good that we have the same choice as sighted people and
that both platforms are accessible out of the box.

Re: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-26 Thread Mike Arrigo
Out of the three major assistants, siri, google assistant and Alexa, siri is by
far the most behind, both on a phone and on smart speakers. I still have my
Iphone SE third edition and might go back to it but for the last month I’ve
been using my Google Pixel 7 and the Google Assistant blows siri away, the
assistance voice typing feature on the Pixel is also amazing.

2023-10-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain

RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-26 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I am cracking up, Sieghard, about your devices and far away ones responding.

Today, I Facetime called my daughter-in-law to show her my haircut. When I got
off, I told my son, as we drove down the highway that Jim's daughter said I
could call her Facetime, all I had to do was say, Siri, call Beth. The next
thing I knew we could hear my phone ringing in my purse. My son, said it did. I
hung it up, but Jim's daughter called. I told her what happened, and we got a
laugh out of it. At least, we know that works, only I didn't say Call Beth
Facetime, but I did say call Beth, and it did.

And for us with both Alexa and google smart speakers in the house, it's amazing
how I am sometimes in the kitchen where we have one of the Google speakers with
a display and I am 5 feet away from it and speak in the direction of the
speaker and I ask something and next thing the Nest Mini in the living room
replies even though it's 15 feet away and completely around a corner and wall,
same happens sometimes with Alexa, we have an Echo Dot 4th gen in the bedroom
and may say something and instead I hear the Sonos One speakers in the bathroom
reply and that has happened with the bathroom door closed.
I recently read on a Sonos Facebook gtroup that adding Alexa to Sonos makes it
less reliable, not sure if that really is so, but maybe it is.

Siri is not the only dumb one out there.

We have timers set in Alexa for different things.

We have a lot of Sonos speakers in the house, the one in our bedroom does not
have the microphone and so does not support Alexa.
IN our Kitchen we have two that do have the microphone and have one timer set
up called "Carol's Timer" which is for steeping her tea.

This morning, standing in the kitchen next to the speaker, I said, "Start
Carol's timer," and Alexa responded, "Bedroom doesn't support that."

This sort of thing happens at a similar frequency with Siri being dumb, which
is what we get for depending on "Artificial Intelligence." And I do mean
Artificial!

I have folders too. I’ve been using iPhones for years. But after a while, you
get more apps. And besides, even if you know precisely what folder an app is
in, you still have to open the folder find the app and open it. If Siri worked
like it should, it would be much more efficient to just use it to open apps.
But even this morning, when I say Open such and such app and give the precise
name, it comes back and asks me which app do you want this one that one or
another one, all in the same general app category. This after I’ve stated
something specifically. Anyway, this just started with the so-called upgrade to
17.1. Feels like a regression to me. And there wasn’t that much to regress
from. I still prefer iOS to android. But really Apple. Get it together on Siri.

Re: Be My AI Mentioned Amongst TIME Best Inventions of 2023

2023-10-26 Thread Scott Davert
Well deserved, but I still wish BME would work on developing an
interface so that one can text a volunteer instead of calling. There
are some circumstances where a blind hearing person may find this of
value, but they're not providing as much access to as many people as
they could be. I understand be My AI works with braille, but what I
also understand is that those who can hear are able to make audio
calls to volunteers. Why can't DeafBlind people be given the same
access?
All of that said, yes this tech is very revolutionary, I just wish
people would start thinking in more broad terms sometimes. I've passed
along the feedback a few times on the lack of texting, hopefully if
enough people ask for it they will take it into consideration!

RE: mail issue query

2023-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you want to use the Mail app I wouldn’t bother about the Gmail app although
Christopher is correct, as long as you are not somehow using POP3 to get your
Gmail which I am not even sure is possible with the iPhone, you can set up your
account in both apps. When I tried the Outlook app for a while I had my
Microsoft email accounts set up in both the Mail app and the Outlook app and
since Mail is not downloaded in the traditional sense but “synced” to your
phone, it doesn’t really matter. Just make sure you select the account type as
“Gmail” when you set up your account in the iOS Mail app.

This happens to us a lot where you think the closest device will respond but it

2023-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

But even this morning, when I say Open such and such app and give the precise

another one, all in the same general app category. This after I’ve stated

The pictures are not saved anywhere. They are used to do the analysis and then
dumped.
To save them, you would actually have to simply use the camera and take the
photo, then under the share option for that photo, select Describe with Be My

I was given a loaf of gluten free bread yesterday. This morning, in a very
dark kitchen, before sunrise, I wanted to double check the exact type of bread
for future purchase. After trying several Bar Code apps and getting an invalid
Bar Code, I didn't even think about turning the light on, and just used Be My
Eyes AI to take a picture of the label.
Here is the result:
The picture shows a loaf of bread in a plastic packaging. The packaging has a
label that reads "New Cascadia Tradition". It is gluten-free Honey Gold
sandwich bread. The label also mentions that it is whole grain, non-GMO,
potato-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free, and always gluten-free. The net
weight is 19.5 oz (553g). The packaging also has a "Certified Gluten-Free" logo
and a "Certified Paleo" logo. There is also text that says "Visit our cafe!".
The bread is placed on a countertop with a drawer handle visible at the bottom
of the picture. The picture is taken in dim light.

I am extremely impressed with this feature of Be My Eyes.

RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mary,

Since I doubt anybody at Apple who has anything at all to say is monitoring
this list, complaining here does exactly 0 good whereas providing feedback in
the long run may actually have an effect. Having said this, I use Siri to open
apps as well and for some reason with my iPhone 13 Pro which also has iOS 17.1
opening apps is not an issue. I just ttried 5 different apps one after another
and each app opened quickly and without fail.
The ones I tried were the following along with what I said:

Watch app - open watch
Mail - open Mail
Sonos - open Sonos
Audible - open Audible
Facebook - open Facebook
RBC Royal Bank - open RBC
Smart HQ - open Smart HQ (for my GE induction range)
AS Home - open American Standard, this one can seem to not work because
Voiceover calls the app "AS Home" but if you say "open AS Home" it either opens
the Apple Home app
or it wil say that it doesn't seem you have an app called "AS Home". But that
is not Siri's fault if the Voiceover label reads one thing, but internally it's
called something else.

By the way, are you using just your iPhone or do you have a headset connected
when you make the request? Also, do you make sure to give it that extra second
or so Siri seems to need these days to properly listen? I find the odd time
something didn't work is when I spoke too quickly and Siri only caught part of
what I said. For example, one situation where this easily happens is when I
ask, for example, "Call John Smith". At times Siri will say something like
"What would you like to know about John Smith" and that is entirely because all
Siri heard was "John Smith" and the "Call" was spoken before Siri listened.

Graysky (a Bluesky client) and VoiceOver accessibility

2023-10-26 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Hello list,

Has anyone had a chance to play with Graysky and have they found it to be
accessible? Someone on Bluesky said they’ve been using the beta and that
some of their Voiceover accessibility feedback has been addressed. However,
when I downloaded the app now that it’s out of beta, I get nowhere. There’s
no Voiceover feedback at all when swiping or tapping.

Also, as the Bluesky app and website are pretty difficult to navigate to
outright inaccessible, I’ve been using Mona to access

Bluesky via Skybridge.

This has worked well as Mona’s already a very accessible Mastodon client,
but the issue I’m coming across is that I get a ton of internal server error
or your connection has timed out messages. I encounter the same connection
issues with Ivory

So it doesn’t seem like it’s an app specific issue.

I figured I’d give Graysky a try and see if there’s any difference or
improvement with the Skybridge workaround, but as I can’t do anything with
it when I open the app…

Anyway, if there are any bluesky users on here and have been able to get
Graysky to work or if they know of a fix for the connectivity issues with
third party apps, it would be great to get some feedback.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Subject: RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

RE: Be My Eyes AI feature

2023-10-26 Thread karl
I guess I'll pile in here as well. A week ago I was sitting in the gate area in
the Monroe Louisiana airport. It was about 40 minutes before my flight and
there were very few people around. I had to use the restroom so decided to use
Be My AI to see what was around me. A couple of pictures described an airport
lounge, windows and chairs. Last the description was of an airport hallway and
then an arrow pointing left that says baggage claim and an arrow pointing right
that says restrooms. Well, now I knew the general direction of the restrooms. I
went to the right and found what I needed. This stuff is really amazing.

RE: Be My Eyes AI feature

2023-10-26 Thread khevener
Richard, I have been impressed with the AI feature of be my eyes too. I took a
selfy and was quiter surprised to discover the color of the top I was wearing.
My friend confirmed its accuracy. Also used it to read computer screen when
Jaws was not working. I do have a question. Where do your pictures go? Are
they just deleted, or are they hanging out somewhere in the cloud? I have not
found an option for saving or deleting them. Thanks.

RE: Siri continues to be the dumbest of all dumb assistance.

2023-10-26 Thread Richard Turner

I'm a bit confused by your message. Did you set up a Gmail account in the IOS

Using iPhone with Wi-Fi calling?

2023-10-26 Thread Kay Malmquist
Hi guys,
So, here is the question. I have an older iPhone which is a 6-S and since
it is not my current phone, there is no cim card so, of course no making
phone calls with it. It still rings and is aware that calls are coming in.
If I turn on Wi-Fi calling, can I still make and receive calls? I have to
admit that I have not tried yet and thought that someone might have a quick
answer for me. Thanks much.

I agree entirely about how ridiculously limited Siri can be, but if you are
using an iPhone you take the bad with the good and that is no didfferent if you
have an Android phone. It' sup to you which platform has more good and less bad.

Frankly, Mark, it seems to me that they’ve all gotten stupider recently,
so-called AI not withstanding. I mean really. Alexa is worthless for sports.
You get all kinds of crap from that. Google Assistant well not so much. But
when I can’t get Siri to open an app on my phone without a big fat hassle, that
just takes the cake. Open Watch. Which watch app do you want Hulu or YouTube or
Watch? Well G. I said watch app. I didn’t say anything about Hulu or YouTube.
This crap is just ridiculous. Any assistant on a phone should be smart enough
to know when you’re asking it to open an app that you have on your phone.
Samsung phones have no problem with this. It’s just ridiculous.

RE: IOS17.1 first impressions: language rotor missing, Notifications fixed

2023-10-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Would have never noticed it because I never use this "Voiceover way" of getting
to notification centre or, for that matter, tha tcontrol centre. With just a
little practice you can get notification and control centre the same way you do
the swipe up from the bottom to go back to the home screen or bring up the app
switcher. Instead of touching near the bottom and swiping up to go home or up
further to bring up the app switcher, you can touch anywhere on the status bar
and drag your finger down a bit for control centre or go further and you get
notification centre.

Yeah... I was hoping they'd fix this issue in this new update! It's been around
since 17.0, but no joy! Hopefully it'll be fixed by 17.2 then?
