Hi

Since IOS 16 I’ve been having a terrible time with Siri not catching the 
beginning of what I say to it, no matter how long a pause I think I have left 
before I start speaking. However, I have discovered that if you say please 
before you tell Siri your request, it works every time.

News app in IOS 16

Hello

Is anyone else having bother with News? VO keeps jumping back to the top of the 
first page

Also, a continuing problem since IOS 15 is that VO will jump back to the top of 
the story when it comes across an embedded image, a tweet or an insta post. 
This seems to happen only in some of the news sources. Huff Post, BGR spring to 
mind, but not others.

Mailing Labels in IOS

Hello all

Never having had much luck with printing labels from Contacts on my Mac, I 
thought I might try to print them off either my iPhone SE or my iPad Mini. 
However, I have searched high and low and can’t find any instructions on how to 
do this, nor yet if it is possible. 

A friend has also been trying to do this but has got nowhere, other than to use 
a specialist label maker and he says life’s too short.

I guess we must both be planning on sending too many Christmas cards:).

Any thoughts?

Microsoft Teams

Hi all

Has anyone got any advice for using Microsoft Teams with VO? I only know one 
other VO user who has experience of this and they couldn’t get it to work at 
all.

I just downloaded the app and it’s directing me to use Skype instead. 

I wouldn’t bother with it, but, ironically, it’s for a meeting of the Digital 
Participation Group at the Scottish Parliament.

Banking app in the UK

Hi

Can anyone recommend any bank apps which are fully accessible with VO? I’m 
familiar with Santander. Although the app would be my primary concern, it would 
be helpful if the bank’s website was accessible also.

I really think it’s about time there was one accessible app you could manage 
all your bank accounts through, whoever is the provider. They all manage to 
talk to each other through ATMs. 

If anyone tells me such a thing already exists, I shall sidle off pretending 
not to be stupid.

I emailed Apple Accessibility about this issue and they confirm that the only 
way to use VC and VO together is to used wired headphones.

I asked if they could address the issue of VC listening to VO and they have 
passed it to the appropriate people.

Voice Control, Dictation and Voiceover

Thanks for the feedback.

Two observations. 

First, it seems that editing text as demonstrated in the Apple Support videos 
is not going to be possible unless and until Voice Control can be persuaded to 
ignore Voiceover. 

Second, I may be imagining it, but I get the impression that dictation is more 
accurate using Voice Control than the normal dictate button on the keyboard. I 
haven’t tried to use the dictate button when off-line, but I assume you can’t 
use it then, unlike Voice Control dictation.

Voice Control, Dictation and Voiceover

Hi all

I’ve been trying to use Voice Control on my iPhone, iPad Mini and MBP. I am 
getting the hang of Voice Control for general commands and have adjusted 
various settings, such as feedback and hints, to assist with this.

However, I am having terrible trouble when it comes to dictation, including 
editing text, within Voice Control. The only way I can seem to manage without 
it endlessly dictating to itself is either to switch off Voiceover, or to use 
an ancient old earphone in the 3.5mm jack on my MBP. BT headphones don’t seem 
to be much use for various reasons, including lag.

I can’t seem to find any articles, blogs or podcasts about using dictation 
within Voice Control and Voiceover. Any suggestions? Have any of you had any 
success with dictation and editing?

British Gas Hive app

Hi

I have been trying to adjust a heating schedule in the Hive app on my iPad and 
it just keeps crashing Voiceover every time I try to copy a schedule. When I 
get VO back all the changes I have made have disappeared.

This is still happening after the recent update and I have reported it to 
British Gas. If others are experiencing this, would be good to register this 
with them too.

Hi all

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I am in the UK, but I will watch out 
in case the Dolby app becomes available.

In the meantime,, we were thinking about using audio mmemos.

I’ve just seen another post about Audacity not being accessible. Are there any 
other apps with a similar function which are accessible?

Sorry it took me so long to respond, I’ve been suffering from horrible lurgy 
and Siri was having a hard time hearing me.

BT mic for iphone/Pad

Hello

Looking for recommendations for a good all round mic.

Our iPhone group, which is not funded, wants to try podcasting. We want to 
start out using our i devices at first, but realise we may get much better 
results with an external mic.

Probably most of the recording wil be indoors, but we do have some ideas about 
recording outside.

Naturally, if we get the hang of it, we may be looking in the future to use 
more specialised equipment, but that’s a way off yet.

Oh and if anyone has any other advice, please do let us know.

iPad OS BT battery level

I’ve not had an iPad long, but I was wanting to check the battery level on my 
Magic Keyboard and thought I could do this the same way as on the iPhone, i.e. 
swipe right with three fingers from the home screen. However, this doesn’t 
work. How do I find this?

Emailing web content

Hi All

Recently, when I share a web page by email, instead of always getting the link 
followed by the reader view version of the page, I am sometimes just getting 
the link. I have an SE and a 5s and I can’t work out if it’s only one or both 
of them which is doing this. Also, I can’t work out if it’s only happening when 
I am sharing from within Twitterrific, or just from Safari.

On the Mac, as you will be aware, you get various options for how to send web 
content. Doesn’t seem to be anything like this in Mail in IOS. If anyone can 
tell me where it might be possible to select how web content is sent, I’d be 
grateful.

Reading Books with speak screen

Hello

I don’t often read books on what used to be iBooks, however, when I do have to 
use the Books IOS app, I much prefer to use the speak screen facility. 

I bought a book last week and tried to use speak screen and the reading was 
interrupted at the end of every page by Voiceover announcing the page number. I 
wouldn’t have minded so much if Siri had paused narration, but VO is speaking 
right over him. It hasn’t done that before and I wondered if there was a 
setting I had accidentally messed up?

While I am on the subject of the app formerly known as iBooks, I sincerely hope 
that the HomePod will learn how to read them. Kindle has become a serious 
option for book reading since Alexa developed the ability to read books.

I just looked at the Apogee and nearly fainted when I saw the price of nearly 
600 quid. Is there nothing a little lower end than this? Something a bit like 
the iMic, but for an iPhone instead of a Mac?

I must say whenever I have tried Skype I have found it quite tricky, so I will 
give Zoom a bash. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I think I like the idea of a 45 minute cut off. It may concentrate some

Accessible video conferencing

Hello

I’ve been asked to join a committee which frequently does virtual meetings. 
They have an assortment of tech, PCs tablets and so on. They are all sighted. 
Some of them are not very advanced users of the tech they have.

Can anyone recommend a cross platform method of video conferencing that is 
completely VO friendly? I suspect audio would do, but you know what those 
sighted people are like.

Anyone using the British Gas Hive heating controller don’t update the app with 
the update released yesterday. Accessibility has been totally compromised for 
the second time this year.

I have reported it and would encourage others to do so. Last time they took 
three weeks to fix it.

Word games for IOS

I’m looking for recommendations for accessible word games.

An older friend has asked me to help her find some VO friendly word games she 
can play on her iPhone. She says her sighted friends are all playing such games 
to keep their brains active and she wants to do it too. She has tried hangman, 
but doesn’t find it very entertaining.

Hi

This is for anyone using the British Gas Hive heating control with their IOS 
app. The latest update has broken accessibility. It is no longer possible to 
alter the temperature setting using VO.

They say they are aware of the problem and will fix it, but when that will be 
is anyone’s guess. If anyone else has a Hive, could they please let the support 
team know that the app is  broken? It might speed them up a  bit.

Yes, the waving a phone about in the general direction of a person at the same 
time as getting on a bus was the problem. Not particularly needing to be that 
surreptitious. 

Also, thinking about it,, the camera could be on me and not the dog. Don’t 
suppose that makes much difference to the purchase of a camera, though.

Don’t suppose either that James Bond has anything to worry bout from me and the 
Misty.

I had been looking on Amazon at that camera, but it seemed to be considerably 
more expensive than some of the other options. However, something can be as 
cheap as it likes, but if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter how cheap it is, 
does it?

Descriptive Video on Amazon Prime?

Hi, sorry, just catching up with emails.

I tried to get something out of Amazon via Twitter, as they are sometimes more 
willing to reply because of the public nature of the communication. They just 
didn’t understand the problem. It’s the Kindle thing all over again.

Oddly enough, I have a sighted friend who lives in India for much of the year 
and she negotiated a substantial discount on her Prime membership because she 
wasn’t able to take advantage of various of the Prime features. If they can’t 
be bothered to provide us with described video content, maybe they should give 
us a discount too ?

I suppose if they ever did respond to this, they would come up with some 
mendacious reason why it isn’t technically possible. Doesn’t seem to stop 
Netflix and hooray for them.

Also, for listers in the US, any chance the FCC could get stuck into this as an 
issue? That was the only thing that got Amazon moving on Kindle.

A bit OT, New Fire 7" tablet

OK, Apple Fan Girl forever and all, but I can’t resist a bargain and I got one 
of those bottom of the range Fire tablets for GBP60 including case and SD card 
so I thought it would do for places I wouldn’t want to take a nice Apple thing.

I have managed to plug it in to charge, but now I’m a bit stuck. I realise I 
will have to get a sighted person to switch speech on, but does anyone know of 
any resources I could check out? My MBP is refusing to read me the on-line 
instruction thing, no doubt on grounds of good taste. 

BTW, I know it’s only cheap, but my goodness me, what a difference even in the 
packaging from Apple.

two-step verification or two-factor authentication

I had been looking into this over the past week, as I’m preparing a short 
presentation on security for our iPhone Users’ Group. I am ashamed to say 2 
Factor Authentication is about the only thing I don’t do and I know I should.

What I would like to know is what happens when you are trying to set up a new 
iPhone, and are swapping over the sim from the old one? How can you get the 
authentication code then? Presumably the sim will be in the new device, so you 
can’t receive the SMS on it because it hasn’t been authenticated.

My brain hurts.

Sorry, missed this post.

I just bought two bands from Amazon. They were both by Jetech, one was a 
leather loop at just under £20 and a Milanese loop for about £12. I haven’t 
seen the real Apple  bands, but they seem good enough to me. I particularly 
like the ease with which one can adjust them during the day as the aged old 
paws swell up.

I should say I am notoriously allergic to watch straps and had to be careful 
not to wear the original strap that came with my Sports  too long. I dont seem 
to be having a problem at all with the leather strap. I have yet to wear the 
Milanese loop for any prolonged length of time. 

I was showing a sighted person the Milanese band today and they said it looked 
like a satin ribbon from a distance. Weird, these sighted folks.

Thanks very much for this feedback. 

Yes, it sounds like Sonus is a much better bet for us VO users. I was intrigued 
by the Denon system appearing in T3 magazines list of the best 12 pieces of 
tech on the planet.

I did download the app, but it didn’t really make much sense without a system 
to use with it. I also tweeted Denon to ask about accessibility, but have had 
no reply.

Can’t help but feel, from what you both say, that Sonus should get my custom 
because of their commitment to accessibility.

An earlier discussion on this list raised the possibility that there may be a 
lot more movies than the 5 you get when you do a search which have a 
description track

I have emailed Apple Accessibility and suggested to them that it makes a 
nonsense of having described movies if they aren’t going to tell us which ones 
they are. They took my point and were going to refer it to whoever deals with 
this sort of stuff.

As usual, it does no harm if other people write to them about this

A Question About Purchasing Descriptive Video Service Enabled Movies from iTunes

Guys

It seems ridiculous that there are described movies in the iTunes store which 
don’t say they are described. If it doesn’t say that they are, they may as well 
not bother having them.

I am going to write to Apple Accessibility about this. Anyone else feel free to 
join in.



Obviously, it is great that people like Netflix are introducing described 
content, but if these tracks are available, why aren’t they being included by 
all the providers? Perhaps Amazon might like to join in? I won’t hold my breath.

Here in the UK, streaming services are excluded from the duty on broadcasters 
to provide a proportion of content with description. If this is how we are all 
going to watch TV, then why shouldn't it be subject to the same regulation?

I feel a rant coming on.

Hi Neil

According to British Gas, the app is broken with VO and they were working on it 
with a target of fixing it by January.

When I was talking through the app with their customer support, it was clear 
that there were a number of things which just weren’t working with VO, for 
example, selecting days of the week.. There are buttons attached to these which 
are invisible to VO.

You may have heard they are about to release Hive 2, which will have 
connectivity with devices other than the heating, such as lights and so forth.

accessible gaelic language iPhone apps?

A bit late to the party, I know, but this has been an issue for me for a while 
as well. I tried to learn Scots Gaelic a couple of times in the old days before 
iPhones and it was murder not being able to read and write it on my Mac. 

Clearly there are two difficulties, dictionary and voice. The one is not much 
use without the other, I fear.

I wonder if this is a case for making representations for these to be 
developed? I have long thought that the best way to preserve Gaelic is to make 
sure kids can make proper use of it on their iDevices. The Scottish Government 
spends substantial amounts of money on bilingual road signs and the like and I 
can’t help but think  this would be a far more cost effective thing to fund.

I am going to bring this up with my MP, who took her oath in Parliament in 
Gaelic, so must be sympathetic and I will report back.

Anyone with any other useful contacts might do the same.

Hive Heating

Hi all

I know I have seen some traffic in the group on this, but I recently had one of 
these installed and really I can’t make head nor tail of the app. All I can 
seem to manage to do is text my boiler, which does work, but seems bizarre and, 
of course, depends on the existing presets.

The app doesn’t seem to do things that apps should do. For example, absence of 
buttons where one would expect there to be buttons.  When I was speaking to 
British Gas about this they kept saying that there were “dots” above the days 
of the week, but not on VO, there weren’t. VO couldn’t even read the days of 
the week individually.

Anyone got any tips on how to navigate this?

British Gas said that the RNIB had tested this app for their developer, but I 
can’t see any evidence of this.
