Re: Justification for using Kindle vs. downloading from Bookshare
Always is a really big word with Amazon. I've purchased a book where maybe the image for the sighted was good, the searchable text we read was crappy ocr. They will take it back, but you have to be willing to go to the effort. On 5/12/2013 19:49, Rick Alfaro wrote: Hi, Since my particular usage is strictly for pleasure reading, I don't use some of the Kindle features like annotations and dictionary look up. Having said that, there are 2 differences in my view. 1. Although BookShare has a lot of books, Amazon has way more. If I can find the book on Bookshare, I would naturally take the free download. If the book isn't on BookShare and I really want it and can find it on Amazon, I buy it. 2. the other advantage being really picky, is that Amazon books are always true digital copies whereas in many cases, the books on bookShare are scanned copies, not that they are poor quality but not true digital copies found on amazon. Regardless, BookShare is an awesome service and I'm happy to also have it as an option. Re: Fwd: [vi-kindle] New Accessibility Features to Free Kindle Reading iOS Apps
Sounds much better than the kindle for pc. One thing to be aware of, though, with any kindle book is that it may not be very readable. I've had one that was apparently images for the sighted and very badly ocr'ed text for searching and for the blind to read. The good news is that I got my money back. Re: firewall apps?
I doubt it is easy to get into an iphone from the outside. If it were, someone would be doing it by now. One could probably write a program that when installed by the user could let things in, but it has to make it through an approval process to make it into the app store. Maybe a good reason not to jail-break your device. Re: Where Compassion and Understanding Cross Paths with Frustration and Impatience
Probably the biggest thing that would help everyone's understanding is if people would just stop a second and listen to their message before posting it. I know, reading ones own writing isn't fun, but it is better that one checks to make sure they understand it themselves before they post it and make us all wonder what they meant. People will need time to reply, so if it takes a poster an extra second to read their message before posting it, there shouldn't be much difference in reply speed. On 4/25/2013 12:39, Bill Gallik wrote: I want to make a note on this list regarding a recent thread that appeared to be bashing some members for not taking due diligence in composing messages. And that on the surface, that post may have seemed inconsiderate, non-supportive and lacking in compassion. But, also allow me to clearly state that the post was far more a result of frustration and impatience than a lack of compassion and support. This entire issue has everything to do with the fact that many of us must listen to the posts than anybody suffering from school marmosis. And when listening to questionably composed messages the screen readers get really annoying. When I could see to read e-mail messages, I could not have cared less how well grammar was adhered to in those messages. But now that I must listen to the messages, it becomes so very mind-boggling to try to understand so constructed messages. I'm not going to call anybody lazy or uneducated or disrespectful, but I will say that I do find listening to poorly composed messages a terribly frustrating chore. Now, please note that I said listening to . . . messages (there's an ellipses embedded within that quoted phrase) can be terribly frustrating and not that the people who send them are such. There's a huge difference in that distinction and please be mindful that most of us are not picking on anybody; we're just frustrated. And that often is because we all know someone is reaching out for help and we're having difficulty receiving that plea for help. So folks, please don't be leaving the list because you think you're being picked on, that is most likely just not the case. Re: IPOD TOUCH 5TH GENERATION SHUTTING DOWN AT 12 PERCENT
The data is in flash, low batteries won't corrupt it. I found that at 20% I will get a warning about low battery. At about 12% my iPod Touch will lose speech and shut off. It will not completely power down, but it will simulate a shut down as if I tapped the sleep/power button on top of unit. I then used the lightning connector cable to charge the device until the speech came back on by itself at about 21 or 22% battery life. Once again I unplugged the USB lightning cable to run the iPod Touch on battery, and at 20% I again received a warning of low battery. At about 12% to 14% the iPod Touch shut itself off once again. Once the unit automatically shut itself off, I charged up to 22% about 3 times, so I think, despite the posted comments from Apple techs, it appears as though the iPod Touch 5th gen might have been engineered to present a warning at 20% and shut off at 12% battery life as those of us on this list with the iPod Touch 5th gen are all experiencing the same thing. I'm not at all alarmed by this. Should I be? I'm assuming a shutdown at 12% of battery life is probably good in that it will protect the integrity of the data on the iPod Touch. Letting the battery drain significantly may result in data corruption, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Ok so if u could I'd like to converse a little more via email and maybe even a phone call and the reason being is that I need to know if I should just live with it or try to get another replacement which might end up with worse issues than the 12 percent shut down but. Same as you I sent mine to apple care and they sent it back with a couldn't reproduce issue which is saying that there's nothing wrong with it,which I know to be false. Right now as we speak I have some crash reports going out to the engineers since this is my fourth replacement(5th gen 64gb black) and I should have an answer, the senior advisor says, by today which is Friday. I will keep u posted with any info or progress as I feel for you since it's the exact same issue as mine. Maybe it's more widespread as u say but people just don't let they're device get down so low. I think I may be lucky as other people have reported they're device working well for a month and then the battery just starts draining like crazy. I don't have that problem. Same as you my device seems to have excellent battery life unless I'm walking with it out in the cold or playing infinity blade 2(which is very graphic and memory intense) and its better than my old 4th gen. Even when its battery drains from game play it will go right back up when i close the game and wait a minute. Same as cold weather too. Soon as I get back into the warm house the percentage stabilizes. So Richard please tell me-How long have you had your newest replacement? It looks to me you've had it for a few months and so far the only issue is the battery still dies at 12 percent? I ask only so I can figure my next step. If your device is running smooth otherwise than I too can live with the issue. It's not good to drain these lithium ion batteries very low anyway so I've been telling myself its actually a system bug that is helping me rather than hurting the device, haha! Oh the things I've told myself to try and live with these device bugs. As I said I'm expectting an email from the senior advisor who sent my crash reports out to the engineers and he said it will explain why it's doing this. I plan to share what I learn right away. Sorry for the long message I'm just excited to finally find someone with my exact issue. Hope to hear from you soon. Re: Question About Latest Upgrade
Everything is grand here. All else fails, restore the phone back to before the upgrade and do it again. This can be done through itunes if you have been backing it up. Re: is there a way to put an away statis on your phone?
Just turn off cell data, unless they are using an iphone and imessage protocol, then you'll need to turn all data off. Re: iPhone 4 keeps constantly switching to and from speaker phone
I have similar problems at times. Use the earbuds. Maybe they'll come out with a real fix for it someday. On 3/18/2013 18:29, Christina C. wrote: Hi all, I am very frustrated. I do not know if something is wrong with the proximity sensor or what. When I speak on the phone my call is constantly disrupted with my phone cutting in and out continually switching back and forth between speaker phone and the speaker that is up to my ear. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? I don't know exactly how to find and clean this sensor but I have wiped the surface of the phone with a dry nonscratching cloth just in case that is the problem. Sometimes shutting the phone down and restarting it seems to temporarily allow me to make phone calls but it's so random I am not sure if this is luck. Sometimes I have to get sighted assistance. I have to shut VO off via triple click home than I get sighted help to turn speaker phone off as it gets stuck in this mode after I shut VO off. Bluetooth Braille display randomly disconnecting?
I have a Braille Edge I use mostly with my Iphone. I've been having a problem where out of nowhere it will just randomly disconnect. This is usually with the display right in front of me and the Iphone very near by. I'm using an Iphone 4 with the latest build of IOS. Usually it will stay connected for ten or 20 minutes of reading before it drops, sometimes I can reconnect and it is fine, sometimes it drops immediately. Is it just me, or are others having similar issues? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
