All iphone's from the 8 and later, support wireless charging, and as for the
iphone SE2, Apple have now integrated Qi wireless charging into it’s new iPhone
SE 2020. A feature which was not found on the previous iPhone SE or even the
iPhone 7.

My 2 cents: If you don't have a good reason for getting 256 gigs of storage,
save some money and don't do it. I had an iPhone with 256 gigs storage and
for most of the year I had the phone, I didn't store more than 50 gigs. I'm
sticking to the 128 gig storage phones, unless I suddenly come across a huge
need for more storage. 128 suits me fine though, since about half is taken
up with music, books, and apps, and I've got lots of storage to go before
getting close to filling up my phone.

In the visual GUI, the iOS podcast app shows the current playback speed in the
lower left corner when you have the current podcast playing and "now playing"
mode/display is in effect. By pressing on the speed icon you toggle it ... it
cycles from 1x to 1 1/2x 2x 1/2x 1x

What's New In iOS 13 Accessibility For Individuals Who Are Blind or
Deaf-Blind

18 September, 2019
Submitted by Scott Davert on

introduction

It's September, and that means a lot of things. For users of iOS devices,
it's time for a new major iOS update.

Just like other releases, this latest build brings a lot of new features
and enhancements to supported iOS Devices. Major changes include a
system-wide Dark Mode, QuickPath keyboard, support for thumb drives and
other USB external memory devices, call blocking features for spam
callers, and much more. Many blogs will be highlighting these new
enhancements to iOS, so I will not discuss them in great detail here. This
article will deal with enhancements pertaining to accessibility:
specifically, those changes which impact individuals who are blind or
deaf-blind.

Those of you who pay attention to such things may have realized that I did
not include low vision in the title of this article. This, sadly, was not
due to an error, but is due to the fact that I could not get what I felt
was sufficient feedback from low vision users to comment on the changes
related to low vision. As such, it is my hope that someone from the low
vision community can cover these features in more detail.

One of the joys and curses of getting a new release from Apple is that
they do not actively document the changes in accessibility with their
products. This is good for me, because it gives me the chance to share new
features with my readers, but it is also a challenge. While I have taken
care to work extensively with iOS 13 since the first Beta release in June,
there will be things that I have missed. I'm confident this will also be
the case with other people attempting to do the same thing. This is also
part of the fun. Whenever I discover a new feature that was not previously
written about, it's almost like solving a puzzle or getting an early
Birthday present.

Check Before You Update!

Unfortunately, along with all of the new features discussed below, there
are some bugs that users should be aware of before deciding to upgrade;
this AppleVis post lists many of the bugs that have been found in the
final release of iOS 13.0. While these bugs are present, Apple is working
on iOS 13.1which will hopefully resolve many of the issues found in 13.0.

General Changes

In General, Apple Has Removed Accessibility

That heading may have you wondering whether this will be a very short blog
post, but if you scroll down, you will see that I'm just as long-winded as
in previous years. If you scroll down the Settings app, you will see that
Accessibility has been moved out of the General menu, and onto the top
level of the Settings app.

Another iOS Update, Another New Siri Voice

iOS 13 brings a new Siri voice to your iOS Device. This voice is only
available as the female Siri voice. It adds more inflection, thus giving
the speech a more natural quality, but sounds similar to the version that
was on iOS 12 otherwise. At this time, the new Siri voice is only
available in U.S. English.

Dictate From Anywhere

In most cases, there is now a “dictate” button beside almost all search
boxes.. Selecting this option will allow you to dictate whatever you would
like to search for within that application.

Speak To Me

Another new feature which may benefit some users is the new Voice Control
feature. By default, it is turned off. You can either tell Siri to open
settings for Voice Control, or navigate to Settings > Accessibility >
Voice Control and begin setting it up.

If you select to turn Voice Control on, before using it, you will need to
be on wifi to download 250MB of data so that Voice Control can work
regardless of whether your iOS Device is connected to the internet or not.

After the download has completed, moving to the right one option will
explain what Voice Control is. Continuing to the right, you will find the
language that is selected. Further along in this menu, you will encounter
several buttons: Customize Commands, Command Feedback, Vocabulary, Show
Confirmation, Play Sound, Show Hints, Overlay, and have the option to help
Apple improve Voice Control. A brief explanation of each option follows.

The Customize Commands option allows you to not only customize what will
cause Voice Control to perform a specific function, but will also allow
you to create your own. Selecting each option from this menu will allow
you to see a full list of what commands are available. Within each of the
commands, you will also find the ability to turn that specific command off
if you wish.

Continuing down the Voice Control menu, you will find an option called
“vocabulary”. This is a

Yes Audible app supports family sharing.
Now, whether that gives the other person full access to your library, I'm not
sure.
You set up family sharing under the main settings for iCloud I believe. I'd
suggest contacting audible directly.

In your Audible app, open Profile, help, and then activate the item that says
"Email Us."

Re: tabs ons safari

2019-07-02 Thread 'Husna Begum' via VIPhone
hi,

what is the point of tabs then if you can have only one open at a time? i
thought it was like having several sessions of word open with different
documents open so i could have one tab for Google etc and another tab for
listening to a program for example from a website. at the moment i start
listening to some thing on a website which maybe 1.5 hours long, half way
through i might need to look at some thing else but if i move away from that
website i lose my place in the recording and this recording is so annoying in
that you can only move forward by 30 seconds at a time. so is there no way i
can have 2 sites open in safari at the same time?

thanks,

To switch tabs, double tap on the tab at the bottom right corner, and you can
then pick the one you want to switch to.
You can only have one open at a time, but you can have hundreds of tabs
available.
You should be able to close them by double tapping and holding, and when you
hear the tone, you will have a choice to close it.
Or, if you want a clean start, double tap and hold on the tab button in the
lower right, and after the tones you should find a close all button.

Bathroom Scales

2019-04-25 Thread 'Husna Begum' via VIPhone
Hi,

Is it worth buying smart scales such as the kantron smart body fat analyser or
renpho Bluetooth body fat scale? Has any one used either of these with the
IPhone and how accessible and easy to use have you found them? Or is it best to
just stick with the ordinary traditional scales?

Thanks, Husna

Yes, that is true although the same applies to the LoganTech braille labeler,
you can get a QWERTY keyboard for it and then any sighted person can produce
perfect braille labels.

You are right about rail been faster to read once it’s on the containers. The
big advantage to the pen friend is that a sighted person can do the whole
business. They can do it when they have time, not when you both have time, so
you can make the braille labels that they can’t make.

I love spices and have about 40 spice containers. I actually just bit the

Extracting a portion of recording from audio memos

2019-01-16 Thread 'Husna Begum' via VIPhone
Hi,

Using audio memos pro I have a recording of 4 hours and 40 minutes and i want
to extract from 4 hours 9 minutes to 4 hours 19 minutes, how would i do that?
I have set markers but they don’t seem to work as when i vo to the refractor
bit all of the recording is there and nothing happens when i press on the
markers button (i thought it would jump to a specific marker) also when i try
to select a specific portion of the recording it only allows me to select
lengths of 14 minutes and 2 seconds long. so by the time i have gone to 4 hours
i can only select from 4 hours 12 minutes to 4 hours 26 minutes which leaves
out part of the recording i wanted. is there a way i can select any part of the
recording rather than being arbitrarily restricted by audio memos as to the
particular time i can choose?

Thanks, Husna

You said 18 month old iPhone SE. That battery is probably a bit degraded
which would cause something like this to happen. but you can go to
settings and battery to see if you're phone is doing anything during
those six hours it's just sitting there. I recently learned that mine
was and zello was the cause. Zello was causing my phone to be in use for
around 20 minutes per hour when I was asleep one night. And the app was
closed. You might want to take advantage of the $29 battery replacement
program that Apple is offering until the end of this year.

On 10/23/2018 7:31 AM, Lisa Belville wrote:
Hi, all. I'm using an eighteen month old iPhone SE. I've had iOS 12 for
over a month and I'm still plagued by battery issues.

I can unplug my phone once it's charged to 100% and leave it alone for six
or seven hours and my battery will be at around 92% with no apps running,
the phone being locked and set to Do Not Disturb.

I always have four Verizon bars and three wifi bars, so the phone isn't
even having difficulty finding a signal on either network. This battery
drain happens while the phone is unplugged and sitting on my nightstand in
the same room as the wifi router and a window, so there again, it's not
having issues staying connected.

Here's what I've tried so far to resolve the issue: Screen time is off,
Location services are off, Auto brightness is off, raise to wake is off,
background app refresh is off, Email and other push notifications have
been disabled, network settings have been reset at least twice. I've also
rebooted the phone with the power/home button combo. Last week I tried
charging it to 100, shutting the phone down completely, and keeping it
plugged into the charger for about eight hours.

I didn't have these issues before upgrading from iOS 10 to 12. Before the
upgrade I noticed the biggest battery drain using YouTube or other apps
where the phone had to be unlocked while in use, but that was expected.

My only thought now is to do the reset where I need to restore the phone
as a new device.

Is there anything else I can do to resolve the issue? Also, if I do the
restore, can I do this using iTunes, my PC and no working eyeballs?

Other than the battery issues, I'm not having any difficulty with my
phone. And, as I said, I wasn't having these issues before the upgrade.

TIA for thoughts.

Accessibility of scribd and bookshare

2018-08-11 Thread 'Husna Begum' via VIPhone
Hi,

How easy have you found downloading books from Scribd to your iPhone? At first
glance it seems better than kindle and audible. Also I was thinking of joining
bookshare, it doesn’t seem to have much if you are from the UK, for example
when I searched for Brandon Sanderson and Laini Taylor using the basic search,
a lot of their books were available but when I searched for the same authors
using the advanced search and limited the search to those books available from
the UK, hardly any books were available. so I am wondering when we will have
the same access to bookshare as people in the USA, I thought with the changes
to the copyright law etc we would have full access by now?

Thanks, Husna

When using Short Text mode, the app only needs to get a quick picture of the

it. it was so frustrating and a thing that should take a few seconds could
often waste more than 5 minutes. also why does the document channel only
read a tiny part of the page, it does not read the whole thing so i use the
short text channel but that is annoying because if you move even slightly it
starts from the beginning again. i thought seeing ai would be so good but as

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode.
Raise your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading.
This is a live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can
pull the phone away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins
to see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Hello everyone,

Could someone please give me some tips on how to possibly use Seeing AI?

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck!
I think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched
channels and tried to read a piece of mail. Again, nothing happened.

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back
and forth.

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

All in all I still think that Seeing AI is an awesome tool offering so many
features in one app and I commend Microsoft for developing this app. The
nice thing is that Microsoft has the resources to continue development and
updates and it is probably a lot less likely to be one of those apps which
start so promising and then end in a fizzle before they disappear or simply
remain in the app store for years without updates.

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck!
I think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back and

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Apple, everyone needs more free iCloud storage
By Chris Welch

During yesterday's education-focused event that saw the introduction of a
new iPad, Apple executive Greg Joswiak revealed that the company is
upgrading the amount of free iCloud storage given to students. Previously,
managed student accounts had the same 5GB as regular consumers, but now,

Apple is raising that limit to a much more spacious 200GB. This applies to
students who have Apple IDs provided and administered by their school.

That's a great thing! Apple is displaying a focused, determined approach to
providing educators with powerful new hardware and improved classroom
software and services. 200GB is an enormous amount of runway for
collaboration and creation among students.
But why shouldn't people shelling out hundreds of dollars for an iPhone or
iPad have a similar, worry-free chunk of storage in the cloud for their
photos, documents, message history, and other precious content? Apple
charges consumers $2.99 per month for that same 200GB allotment (which can
be shared between family members), so you'd be paying just shy of $36
annually. That's not much, but it continues to feel like ill-disguised penny
pinching from the world's biggest and richest tech company. In January, John
Gruber said the included allotment of 5GB "seems ridiculous" when it comes
alongside a 64GB device. If you've got a 256GB iPhone or 512GB iPad, it
becomes even more unreasonable.

seven years ago.
The 5GB limit has been in place since Apple unveiled iCloud at WWDC 2011.
It's been almost seven years! That's too long to be stuck in place, and it's
reminiscent of the way Apple dragged its feet in moving away from 16GB
iPhones. It eventually happened, but long after many of us had determined
16GB to be an unworkable amount of space.
A lot of people (most?) buy the base-level iPhone, so Apple's decision on
how much storage goes inside is a critical choice. And the same holds true
for iCloud; I'd wager that most customers never upgrade from the free tier.
They just won't give in, whether it's out of principle or because they're
sensibly trying to avoid yet another monthly charge in their lives.
5GB makes things way more difficult for those people than they should be.
Fundamental tasks like backing up your device become cumbersome chores. If
you never upgrade, you're likely going to have a worse time using an iPhone.
Full stop. It surprises me that Apple continues to let that fly.
Also disappointing is that the paid tiers have continued to increase in
capacity over time, but the free allotment hasn't budged even once.
And despite Apple's best efforts (like the video above) to explain how you
can manage iCloud, customers are inevitably confused, frustrated, and
annoyed when they hit the ceiling. It usually happens well before they
approach the limits of their iPhone or iPad's physical storage, and that
disconnect between the two only makes things more irritating.

The most effective ad that Google has ever made for Google Photos was aimed
at the dread of seeing Apple's "not enough storage" message pop up on your
iPhone's screen. It works because it's a thing that millions of people have
experienced. Joanna Stern likens the message to a ransom note; you'd better
pay up if you want to keep all that data safe.
Apple's ideal scenario involves you continuing through those prompts and
upgrading to a higher tier of monthly iCloud space in seconds. And sure,
maybe that's an inevitability if you're storing years of photos in the
cloud. Apple has no obligation to give you a free digital locker for
everything. Buying an expensive gadget doesn't somehow make us entitled to
that. But people are hitting this wall way, way too soon in their experience
with an iPhone or iPad.
For context, let's look at what you get on Android:
Google: 15GB of free cloud storage with Google Drive, unlimited photo backup
with Google Photos at "optimized" quality. 100GB for $1.99 / month, 1TB for
$9.99 / month, or 10TB for $99.99 / month.
Samsung: Samsung Cloud, the iCloud equivalent for Galaxy S and Note
smartphones, also offers 15GB of storage to start out. 50GB is $0.99 /
month, and 200GB matches Apple's monthly price of $2.99.

So 15GB is the baseline for Apple's competitors. That still feels
insufficient, but it's a big enough increase to make a difference when it
might count.
I'm hopeful yesterday's announcement for schools was a precursor to an
increase in iCloud storage for everyone at WWDC in June. Apple is long
overdue to raise it up to an amount that's actually helpful for the

I would second, or third, the votes for BlindSquare. Though it is not
specifically an app to give direction from Point A to Point B, you can
use BlindSquare to get information about your environment, in
conjunction with Apple/Google Maps to get directions, or to look up
other information like menus from many restaurants. Also, it is
updated fairly often with fixes and new features. I recall seeing in
the last update that their Open Street Map data was updated, whatever
that means. If you want something more "blindness specific" which will
tell you exactly where the door of a business is locate relative to
you, then go for one of the other more expensive apps. BlindSquare
works for me and suits my purposes.

Another consideration is where in the world you are located. You do not
say

and this is an important consideration for anyone asking for app
recommendations. Nearby Explorer is only currently available in North
America while the other two have maps for other parts of the world. Also,
you do not say if you need the app in a language other than English.
Nearby

explorer supports only English while Blind Square supports more than 20
languages. English though is an international language spoken throughout
the world by educated peple.

I agree with Mike, although I don't have a lot of experience with
Seeing Eye; it's price alone of $300 is a great deal more than the $80
of Nearby Explorer.

I believe the support for Seeing Eye may be better (in that you can
pick up a phone and call someone, or email their support department),
where-as Nearby Explorer's only support is a mailing list (nothing
else). The lack of support is perhaps my only significant criticism
offered for Nearby Explorer.

If money is very important, you can try the $20 Blind Square ... not
my favorite because the maps it uses for intersections are "free" ones
created by volunteers, and so often quite incorrect, but it's price is
the

best.

Be that as it may, I strongly recommend the iOS Over Drive app to anyone who
enjoys Audible audiobook content, as they use the exact same files, though
the cover art may differ.

For example, I have downloaded over 30 audiobooks via Over Drive since the
start of the year, absolutely free. Of course, these titles are made
available via the public library system and, as such, one can listen to them
for the allotted checkout time. In my case, that is 21 days. Still, it
beats paying 20+ dollars or more for an audio book that I will most likely
only listen to, once. And of course, I can check out the books anytime they
are available or be placed on an automatic waist list.

Should you decide to use Over Drive for audio books, be sure to join as many
of your local libraries as possible so that you will have the widest
selection of titles. For example, sometimes, I will search for a title that
is not available in one library but is available at another.

Good luck and enjoy,

Mark

Hi again. If you are not thinking in purchasing another apple device. I think
the apple bluetooth keyboard wil work great for you! you can perform the iscren
finger gestures and so on. I have evensome commands that you can use when you
get it, and other I can teach you how to use.. I think the Apple Store have a
new one, but i have the old one, but let me know which one you get and I can
teach you how to use it! For example, with the apple bluetooth keyboard, if
you press F1 and F2 you can lower and increse brightness instead of doing it
wit with the swipe up and down gesture. but you can also use voiceover the
rotor with the apple bluetooth keyboard and use voiceover rotor, and be able
to increase Voiceover speaking rate and more! I look forward in hearing from

Yu can read non DRM ePub files with Voice Dream Reader. Or, join Bookshare
and access their books with Voice Dream Reader.
But, as Mark said, if you are wanting eBooks from a library, they are not
accessible.
Bookshare, for $50 per year has more eBooks than you will ever read and many
are the same ones that you could buy through Kindle, Nook, iBooks, since
they get much of their material directly from the publishers.

As of today, their web site says they have "550,000 titles s
 and counting!"

Using a keyboard with the iPhone

Hi,

When I am using Overdrive to listen to books, some times I have to rewind a few
times during the course of the book, each time the home button needs to be
pressed, I am worried this will eventually damage the home button. If I attach
a keyboard to the phone can I rewind books etc using a button on the keyboard
instead of needing to press the home button?

Let me know.
Thanks,

Hi,

Never would have guessed the raise to wake was in display and brightness,
thanks for that. But turning the sound affects off in voice over audio turns
all the sounds off e.g. when you flick left and right, I wanted all the other
sounds to remain, is there no way of doing that?

Hi. First off, for your lifting the phone issue, go to settings, display and
brightness and turn raise to wake off.

As for Voiceover saying screen locked, if you turn off sounds in settings,
general, accessibility, Voiceover and Audio, you will get the screen locked
message again. This is a new feature in iOS 10 where if you have sounds
enabled, you don't get that message.

  Hi Shaf,

Strictly speaking what you and Sarah describe would be fraud, a thief is
somebody who steels something by breaking into your house or maybe from a store
during opening hours. Anyhow, in a way it is symantics. I don't fault you and
Sarah from being angry, but I still say that the 2,000 people on this list
which deals with the iPhone, iOS, apps and accessories want to continuously
come across posts where every time Eden posts something you call her out by
calling her a thief, crook or whatever. If somebody has the moderators
permission to advertise an item for sale and you see Eden replying you can
always send that person a direct message to warn them, but while I am sorry for
you having been defrauded it should not be a continuous issue on this or other
lists. I'll leave it at this and won't comment further.

Subject: It's true that Eden Kizer has scammed a lot of unsuspecting people

Hi list,

I was reading a thread where somebody else said that they were scammed by an
individual named Eden Kizer. I was one of those individuals who was scammed by
her.

Just over a year ago I advertised a BrailleNote braille display on
Blindbargains, and was contacted by somebody named Eden Kizer asking too
purchase it from me. I was selling it for $4000 and she said she couldn't
afford to pay for it all at once. She asked me if she could pay monthly
installments of $500 and, since I really wanted to sell it and thought she
would honor her word, I took the first payment of $500 and sent her the
BrailleNote. The BrailleNote was in excellent condition, had no scratches or
dents, had an excellent battery and came with all the accessories including the
carrying case.

I have yet to receive the rest of the payment for the BrailleNote (she owes me
$3500). I have previously attempted to call her about it, and rather than
talking about why she wouldn't pay the rest of the money she owes me she
decided to change her phone number. She also ignores my emails.

I just want everybody to be aware of Eden's scams. I'm extremely upset that she
didn't pay me back in full for the BrailleNote I sold her and hope she doesn't
do the same to anybody else. I'd hate to know that other people have also been
scammed by her, although I'm sure she's done the same to others. I was only
trying to do her a favor by accepting payment installments since I understand
not everybody has $4000 to pay all at once, but now I know not to do that
anymore and only accept a payment in full.

Thanks for reading and I hope people think twice before falling for these
horrible scams.

Re: KNFB reader, having more focused subject headings

2016-07-08 Thread Husna Begum

Hi,

Reading the emails now i can see people wrote about the KNFB reader offer
quite a lot but I was busy during the last couple of weeks and did not have
time to read emails, I just look through the subject headings and deleted
the ones I was not interested in, of course all the subject heading just
said KNFB reader and not KNFB reader offer or sale on or anything so I
missed the crucial date. So I am just asking people to be more precise and
if there is a sale on for a popular app to say in the subject heading sale
on or offer or something so people can immediately tell there is an offer on
rather than just miss an offer because they didn't have time to read emails
just then.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation

Krister and others,

I'll add to Sieghard's already helpful instructions. Try getting a piece of
paper you know is white with black text for scanning with Knfb reader. Place
it on a table you know is dark in a room with good lighting. After you place
the iPhone on top of the paper with the rear facing camera in the center of
the page, slowly lift the phone to the height Sieghard suggested which is
about 8 inches for me. Now place two fingers on the field of view button on
the right side of the Knfb main screen. Gently lift one of those two fingers
while leaving the other one in contact with the screen. The field of view
picture should take using this split finger method with a bare minimum of
phone movement. If your page has good contrast with its background and your
lighting is good, I'm thinking you might get your first field of view report
where all four corners are seen. You can use this same split finger method
when taking the actual picture scan.

Best of luck and please keep trying.

sense of direction, balance and special awareness is extremely good. Of
course I had perfect sight for the first almost 17 years of my life and

Anyhow, if you had sighted help and practiced lots and still find it

If you repair your iPhone 6 or above, have a problem with it, and take it to a
third party(not Apple)to fix it an error 53 lock-out message could occur,
causing your phone to be useless, and for want of another word, a brick. Apple
itself, cannot restore your phone, once this message occurs, see link below for
this article.

Error 53 could kill your iPhone if a non-Apple tech fixed it
By Justin Ferris

For two decades, the worst error you could see in technology was Windows' "Blue
screen of death." It's a sign that something is seriously wrong with your
hardware or software, and you might be looking at hours or days of frustrating
troubleshooting or repair.

However, the blue screen of death might finally lose its place in infamy to
Apple's new "error 53." If you see this error on your iPhone, it means that
your phone is completely locked. Your information is probably gone and Apple
can't do anything to help. So, how does it happen?

This problem started popping up for iPhone 6 users who had had their phones
repaired by third parties, or even had phones with mild damage that still
worked fine. Specifically, it happened when phones started updating to iOS 9.

Once error 53 appears, the phone is completely locked. Affected users who take
the locked phone to the Apple store are being told that the only fix is to buy
a new iPhone. Even the data on the locked phone can't be recovered.

Next page: Why Apple says this happening, and could Apple have a more sinister
plan?

By Justin Ferris

An Apple spokesperson speaking with Money has given an explanation. It comes
down to the touch ID sensor in the home button. Whenever the home button is
repaired or replaced, the sensor has to "uniquely pair" with the "secure
enclave" in the phone that handles authentication.

If that pairing fails for some reason, the phone assumes someone has tried to
attach a "malicious touch ID sensor" and the phone locks to protect your data.
According to Apple, "unauthorised [sic]" repair can disrupt the touch ID sensor
and cause this problem.

However, some people, especially those who now own worthless phones, are
thinking there's more to the story. This only became a problem with iOS 9,
which means iOS 8 wasn't concerned about the Touch ID pairing, or was more
forgiving. So, why did Apple change things?

Some people have speculated that this is Apple's way of shutting down
third-party repair shops and forcing users to get repairs done at the Apple
Store. Third-party shops often charge much less than Apple does for similar
repairs. If true, that's especially bad for people in countries or areas with
few or no Apple Stores.

It is interesting to note that while Apple says the lockdown feature is a way
to protect the information on the phone, it apparently has no way to reverse
the lockdown so you can get your information back. It also didn't inform
customers or repair shops that this was a possibility so they could decide if
they wanted to take the risk.

Apple could be assuming that everyone uses its iCloud backup service to keep
their information safe. However, it has to know that many people choose not to
trust their information to the cloud.

Whether this is intentional or not, Apple users could be looking at a serious
problem down the road. Of course, it could also be a serious problem for Apple
if governments decide that locking out third-party repair shops (intentionally
or not) violates some laws.

What do you think of error 53? Is it a security feature or an Apple scheme? Let
us know your thoughts in the comments.

They can be as long as you have storage on your phone. I believe a minute of
recording in the voice memos app takes up about 2 Mb, so a half hour
recording would take up about 60 Mb, an hour 120 Mb, 10 hours 1.2 Gb etc.
I would, however, look at something like Dropvox (note, "Dropvox" with a "v"
as in victor) which is a simple recording app that records in MP3 format and
which automatically uploads recordings to a folder you specify in Dropbox.
If you want to transfer your recordings to a computer this is by far the
easiest way, if you use the native Voice Memos app you have to use iTunes to
transfer the recordings and Dropvox makes it much easier and basically
automates the task. You can even set Dropvox up so it starts recording as
soon as you open the app, a great way to record a quick audio note without
much fuss.

Call Apple Accessibility, no charge, no worry about Apple Care, and they
will help you.

thanks, Paul. I don't have family sharing. I am the only one on the account.
And when I go into my account it looks like I'm subscribe still. I hate to
resubscribe. I don't need to memberships even if it is a free trial. So I
really don't know what's up. And I'm not sure where to call, since I don't
have AppleCare on this phone, thus I don't think they'll deal with me on the
phone if I call Apple. Do they actually deal with problems with radio etc.
over the phone?

Hi all,
I am having problems getting Apple music radio to load and play. I am also
having problems getting Siri to play artist who are not in my personal
purchased collection of music but are on Apple music. The radio tab simply
says loading and stays that way. And when I ask Siri to play an artist who
is not in my personally owned collection, I am told to open Apple music
where I see a suggestion. But then I am told I need to join Apple music to
play this and other songs by that artist. But I have already joined Apple
music. My account says I am a member of Apple music. I don't understand
it. Is anyone else having this problem?

True. But my old grandad, who was also blind, used to slide them between
two fingers and feel how far up his forefinger the note came. He just got
good at it. The banks here used to provide a plastic thing with steps up one
edge representing the different note sizes too. They used to provide a lot
ofuseful things like that, but not seen in years, not asked for in years

Re: Audio Memos app now supports using the internal iDevice microphone in full frequency mode

Subject: Audio Memos app now supports using the internal iDevice microphone in
full frequency mode

Hi, Like Boss Jock, this app now supports the removal of audio filters that are
used by Apple to make the internal microphone use less bass response than

the microphone can allow. Turn off these filters, and you have a very nice
sounding, full frequency microphone. While Boss Jock can do the same thing, the
Audio Memos app is less complicated because it is only for simple recording and
not like Boss Jock which allows one to add and mix other sounds in with the
recording.

One nice thing about this app is that you can turn the filters back on and now
you have the microphone just as it sounds with the apple processing. Sometimes
I want to choose, and with this app, I can.

There is a free version, and a paid version. The nice thing is that the paid
version is as low as $0.99 and you can then decide on the in app purchases you
want like voice activation and many others. The cost of the total app if you
just want to purchase it out right is $9.99

The interface is very straight forward with a way to manually adjust the volume
control and the limiter at the same time without having to deal with a lot of
technical parameters.

There are many ways to export recordings. You can use iCloud, email, Air Drop,
DropBox, iTunes, and you can even send them directly to your computer by using
a variant of your computer IP address to connect to the app. You can also
export files to other applications such as BossJock. In addition, You can
import songs from your music into the recorder.

Two links below. First is to the iTunes app store where you can read more about
and perhaps purchase this app. The second link is a short demo recording I made
using both the filtered and unfiltered settings in the app.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audio-memos-voice-recorder/id338550388?mt=8

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10881362/Audio-Memos-App-demo.mp3

Enjoy.

Neal

Re: Any thoughts on screen protectors?

2014-09-28 Thread Husna Begum
hi,

what is the tactile screen protector like and does it help with typing
accuracy? I've just got a normal protector on my 5s at the moment, is it worth
changing to one of the tactile ones?

thanks, Husna

Subject: Re: Any thoughts on screen protectors?

I pretty much always use cases with a built-in screen protector, such as the
OtterBox Defender or Griffin Survivor. For the first little while that I had my
iPhone 4, I used a Pixelspec HD case with a Solona screen protector, but the
protector kept getting pushed up on the sides by the case. I ended up removing
the protector and the case, and switching to an OtterBox Defender. When that
broke some time after getting my iPhone 4S, (the case lasted about four years
for me) I moved to a Griffin Survivor.

When I get my new iPhone six, I'll most likely be moving back to the OtterBox
defender again, since I like that style of case and clip better then the
Griffin Survivor. The Defender allows easier access to the camera then does the
Survivor. This was by design, as the Survivor has been made to comply with
higher military specifications in regards to how much dirt, dust, moisture,
etc. to protect against. The Survivors clip also grips the case in such a way
that the charging port is unable to be accessed, and the Defender does not.

I haven't yet decided if I'm going to get a tactile screen protector from
Speeddots that works with my iPhone 6's Defender case. Lol. It looks like I've
made up my mind that I'm going to get an OtterBox cup of defender case for my
new iPhone, as I'm talking like I have already decided to do so.

Thanks,
Ari

would place their finger where it needed to be before tapping. I then put on a
way less expensive one that was like glass and that worked fine for me.

  Take care,

  Hi,

Curious to learn if folks are choosing to use screen protectors or not.

Are they pretty generic and interchangeable, or are there certain
recommended brands.

  Thanks in advance. Keith

Hummmnmnm, the logic of it threw me too, so are we to understand the
app can't learn to rotate and process the image the other way? I know some
of the smarter pc based reader apps did this.

Kertsweil springs to mind.

Getting range or distence right would help too; wonder if they recommend a
viewing distence for this?

Those scanning boxes have their uses then, though not a portable solution.

Hi,

I'm no photographer, but I am a math and science guy. If you are saying that
taking a landscape picture of a page that is essentially a portrait improves
results, that makes no logical sense. The number of pixels lost is on the
order of 40%. You lose about 20% on the left and right sides to meaningless
background if a full portrait page is in view in landscape

I don't buy it. There must be another factor contributing to the issue.
Unless of course, the OCR engine works better with fewer pixels.

There's your problem, hold it in landscape mode, you'll get better

I recommend Judy Dixon's book, Get the Picture, from National Braille

photography.

Hi Krister, hard to know what you're doing without seeing what you're
doing, but the one thing that comes to mind is, are you holding the
phone lengthways or sideways? I find I get the best results by putting a
page of text on a table, like I would be reading it in Braille or
visually. Then hold the phone sideways a few centimetres above the page.
Use the vibration feedback so that the phone stops vibrating, indicating
you have the angle right, then take the picture. For further feedback
before you take the picture, you might use the field of view report,
particularly in the early stages.
Good luck. This thing really rocks so stick with it.

What are you guys doing to get good results? Me, i got a lot of
gibberish and some readable text but not much. Is there a technique for
this? Does the reader give some kind of feedback when all text's

stupid.:-)

I have played a bit today with this app on my iPhone 5S and it really
is pretty good. I just got it to read the instructions on a small
bread mix bag where the text was incredibly tiny and brown on a beige
background. The results were very quick and about 95% accurate! Harry

Hello Jonathan,

Your first impressions of the KNFB app is encouraging. At this time,
I'm going to have to be on the sidelines until I decide on which
iPhone 6 I will purchase. This is my question to this thread. For
those who invest in the KNFB Reader app and have purchased either an
iPhone 6 or 6 plus, it would be terrific to post on the accuracy of
the app in comparison to the phone that they originally installed
the app on. Also, if one can also comment on the use of the app with
the 6 plus in particular because of the optical stabilization.
ANOTHER person read my mind regarding if your use of the app was
with the StandScan or with some other type of stand.

Thanks so much for your first impressions.

Best,
Eileen
