Re: Free Calendar App?

2021-07-08 Thread K. Scott Carlson
The calendar seems to work well as long as you're willing to use Siri to set up
appointments. Finding the location field when editing an event can be tricky.
But besides that, it's fairly straightforward.

Free Calendar App?

2021-07-03 Thread K. Scott Carlson
Are there any good free Calendar apps that will sync with multiple calendars? I
find the regular Calendar app unbearably cumbersome, especially for adding
events; just creating a single event can take several minutes. I'm not
interested in paying for a monthly subscription for something like Fantastical.

Voiceover Not Announcing Length of Songs on Lock Screen

2021-04-27 Thread K. Scott Carlson
Since iOS 14.3, Voiceover on the lock screen announces track position of a
song, but doesn't include the total length of the song as it used to. Is this a
bug, or has a setting been added that can change this?

Re: Strange Text Message Notification Issue

2021-03-18 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I tested it, and it's not a Voiceover problem. I believe it occurs when I am in
a media app. A message (or any other notification) will show up in the
notification center, but not as a banner. The notification settings are normal.
I assume this is the bug described, but I didn't notice it until recently, and
I've had iOS 14 for awhile.

Strange Pronunciation Issues

2020-11-26 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I'm encountering a couple of pronunciation issues with VO I can't account for.
First, it is now always pronouncing "re:" as "regarding". Second, even though I
have my punctuation level set to some, it is not pronouncing many of the
symbols included in that level, such as underscores and slashes. I'm using iOS
14.2 on an iPhone 7.

Free Calendar Apps

2020-11-24 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I find the default iOS calendar app extremely cumbersome due to how long it
takes to create events. I'm looking for a simple alternative which will, at the
least, let you type in the start and end times of events. I don't particularly
feel like paying a subscription fee for a calendar, so something free or
inexpensive would be great.

Altering the Screen During Calls Back to the Full Screen View

I can't find instructions on how to do this; does anyone know? I think it
effects other things, such as renaming documents in the files app.

Re: iCloud for Windows

2020-10-11 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I got the program installed awhile ago, but I could never get it to download
everything; it downloaded some of the files and then just stopped.

Searching in the Files App

2020-09-22 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I would like to search a particular folder in iCloud drive for all the PDF
files it contains. When I go to the search field and type .pdf, it says there
are no results. My guess is that it is only searching that folder, and not the
subfolders within it that all contain the PDFs. The Dropbox app doesn't have
this problem. Can anyone tell me a way to get this done?

VO and Bluetooth Speakers in iOS 14

2020-09-18 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I was under the impression that there would be an easier way to have VO speech
output through the iPhone's speakers while other audio was playing on a
Bluetooth device in iOS 14. I haven't seen anything about this on AppleVis;
does anyone know if this happened?

Re: Syncing Music from iTunes Library to iPhone

2020-08-28 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I don't think anyone should have to pay $40 to sync music to their phone,
something any sighted person can do. And I have enough music that I can't just
keep adding stuff to my phone; I have to rotate it.

Syncing Music from iTunes Library to iPhone

2020-08-27 Thread K. Scott Carlson
iPhone 7 with iOS 13.6, Windows 10 with NVDA. I am wondering if there is an
easy way to sync songs from my iTunes library on to my iPhone. I say "easy way"
because: 1) I can't search through my list of albums, and (2) checking an album
returns me immediately to the top of the list. I have thousands of albums, so
this is a big problem.

I do not currently have Apple Music so my library is not in the cloud.

Is there a way to do this? I turned it on long ago but now I can't get it to

Does anyone use this app? I am finding it difficult to use because I can't

Re: Creating Events Quickly in iOS Calendar

2020-08-15 Thread K. Scott Carlson
If you download FantastiCal now, you get a free trial and then have to
subscribe. Sounds like if you already have the app, you don't have to
subscribe, which doesn't seem all that fair.

Using type with Siri and keeping hey Siri on makes for a great
combination; you can very easily create complex events without Siri
misunderstanding what you are saying. This--as far as I can
tell--replicates FantastiCal without the price. Thanks to those who
figured out this solution.

Creating Events Quickly in iOS Calendar

2020-08-12 Thread K. Scott Carlson
Hello,

I'm trying to make better use of my calendar, but I find the iOS calendar takes
forever to use. Adding an event, especially at a location, takes so much time
it is almost not worth it. I know FantastiCal has excellent natural language
support; at one time I think it was a one-time purchase, but now it is a
subscription-based model and I really don't like subscription apps outside of
streaming. Are there any ways to speed up adding calendar events to the normal
iOS calendar, or any other free/one-time purchase apps that have more robust
natural language input or are just more efficient?

There is a plan called MintMobile, which is an MVNO run by T-mobile, that
offers 12 GB of data for $25 a month; you just have to pay for a number of
months in advance. I haven't tried it but I'm considering switching.

Re: Playing Voiceover through Phone While Speaker is Connected

Strange—I feel like on Jonathan Mosen's podcast he mentioned this was already
possible, but perhaps not.

It's quite a good speaker for its size. Do you mean the "audio destination"

Playing Voiceover through Phone While Speaker is Connected

I know there is a way to do this, and I have the "audio destination" option on
the rotor selected. However, if I am connected to my bluetooth speaker, the
option isn't there. I'm using an older Urge Soundbrick Plus, so perhaps it just
doesn't do that with older speakers? Help is appreciated.

Re: Syncing Local Music Files to iPhone

2020-07-10 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I don't want to delete things from my iTunes library; I just want to get them
off my phone and not have them re-sync automatically. Deleting and then
re-adding would take just as much time as going through and manually
un-checking everything I no longer wanted synced.

Syncing Local Music Files to iPhone

2020-07-10 Thread K. Scott Carlson
Hello, I have a major issue with regards to syncing albums onto my iPhone from
my local iTunes library. I have a large amount of music, and not all of it can
fit on my phone at once. The big issue I have run into is that, if I want to
get rid of all of my albums and sync different ones, there is no way to do this
quickly. If I turn off the sync feature, everything is deleted; but if I turn
it back on, the albums I had previously selected in the "music" tab in the
iPhone settings in iTunes are still checked. I have to go through and uncheck
each album individually, which takes a tremendously long time. I don't have
wi-fi at the moment, so iTunes match isn't an option as I have no way to upload
the music; and I'm not planning on getting an Apple Music/Spotify subscription
right now. Can anyone offer any advice?

Has anyone used this app? How does it compare to similar programs like Ulysses

it could be a good free option.

2018-01-30 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I would like Overcast a lot better if it (a) let you see only a list
of your downloaded episodes and (b) actually streamed episodes instead
of downloading lower quality ones when episodes are set to stream. I'd
get Downcast but don't want to pay for it.

Do you know to what degree things like coloring, greyscale, boxes and

Hi all,

I've noticed that when setting the rotor to scroll by line and swiping down, VO
reads the next line but with the first letter or two cut off.
If I then swipe up to go to the beginning of that line it will read the whole
thing. Anyone know what's going on?

Re: Recognizing Photos from Facebook with Seeing AI

2017-12-21 Thread K. Scott Carlson
If you click on the photo, it will open and there will be a share
button. That share button does not, however, open up the typical iOS
share screen. Instead it is the Facebook share screen, where you are
invited to share the photo to your timeline. So as far as I can tell,
there's no way to recognize a photo from directly in Facebook.

In the Blind Side Podcast on Seeing AI, Jonathan Mosen did a
demonstration on Twitterific of recognizing a photo from within the app,
but it may be that it only works in that particular client. I'm not sure.

Recognizing Multiple Pages in Seeing AI

2017-12-18 Thread K. Scott Carlson
I assume the answer is no, but I'd like to confirm. Is there a way to
recognize multiple pages in Seeing AI similar to KNFB Reader? That is,
recognize a number of pages of a document in succession and then save
them all? This is one of the useful features of KNFB reader and, at this
point, one of the few reasons its document reader still has a small
advantage (at least for me.)

Writer is $9.99 but well worth it in my opinion.
I know nothing about Scribner.
MS-Word is free, but not very user friendly with VoiceOver. It is
almost impossible to keep track of where you are in a document.

It might be a little better than Pages, but not great.

According to the manual, you can adjust this in "advanced settings". The

manual is really out of date here.

Once I've connected Voicedream to Pocket and added a bunch of articles
from Pocket into my RSS reader, how do I get the articles from Pocket to
Voicedream and have them read back to back?

When I'm in the now playing screen in Spotify on the track position

Learning the Camera

2017-11-03 Thread K. Scott Carlson

All,

I am pretty terrible at aiming the camera on my iPhone, whether that is
for Facetime, scanning or something else. Is there anywhere that
explains how to aim the iPhone camera well without seeing it? I'm
especially bad with the front-facing camera.

Spotify Library Search

2017-10-26 Thread K. Scott Carlson
If I go to the "albums" window in the library tab in Spotify and type
something in the search field, I am not able to exit that search field.
There will be an albums heading at the top, but no back button and a
two-finger scrub does nothing. To get back out I have to click on "your
library" again which gets me back to the main screen. Anyone else seen this?

Re: Why Does Everyone Like iOS Alex so Much?

2017-10-20 Thread K. Scott Carlson

old but reliable companion. The American Ava voice is also reasonably
pleasant.

I think people were really looking forward to Alex because on the Mac he
does sound quite a bit better. Also, for some people with hearing loss I
understand Alex can be better than other voices.
I also still use Eloquence with Jaws although occasionally may switch to
a
voice like Samantha or Nathan if I want to read a longer article or piece
of
text slowly. All of the human sounding voices in my opinion don't sound
good
when they speak fast. The new female SIRI voice on the uiPhone is a good
example. I think it sounds awesome, maybe the best TTS I have heard
except
maybe Alexa on the Echo, but she definitely does not sound good if you go
faster than her default.
Larry is correct, voices are super subjective, some for example prefer to
use the compact iOS voice and think it sounds better than the high
quality
one and I just don't hear it that way, to me the high quality is much
better.

Sieghard

That's the biggest problem I have: I typically have my voice set to
about 550 words per minute. For the human voices that makes them almost
incomprehensible, whereas not so much the synthetic voices.
