big problem with IOS 18.0 update on Iphone SE 2nd gen
I updated and now my VO is producing loud static instead of the voice. It is so severe that I had to have my wife look at it to see if she could change the voice. that did nothing to fix it. I did power off and back on but this fixed it for about 30 seconds and it started the static again. I am now going to connect to my laptop and restore my phone back to IOS 17.7. Anyone else having this issue yet? Thanks. -- Dan Beaver (KA4DAN) USA -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: Apple is Opening Up the iPhone's NFC Chip: What You Need to Know, Mac Rumors
Actually, the author of this is not stating quite the truth. NFC features are already available on many Iphones. I use it on my SE 2020 to read and write NFC tags a lot. I use it on a third party app too. I also use it for my medications using the Scriptalk app. It is available for much more than Apple Pay and the like. Right now, the NFC chip is locked down, and it's primarily only used for Apple Pay, but a number of new capabilities will be coming when Apple expands access to NFC. NFC Capabilities in Third-Party Apps With NFC access, banks will be able to offer direct contactless payment options that serve as an alternative to Apple Pay, but it app developers will be able to do more, too. Some ways Apple says NFC can be used: Contactless payments in stores Car keys Closed-loop transit cards Corporate badges Student IDs Government IDs (coming in the future) Home keys Hotel keys Merchant loyalty and reward cards Event tickets Security Protections Apple is creating several new APIs that will power the contactless transactions. The APIs will use the Secure Enclave in the iPhone, with sensitive information stored directly on device. Developers will have to request access to the NFC and Secure Enclave entitlement, sign a commercial agreement with Apple, and pay associated fees. Apple plans to make sure that only authorized developers who meet regulatory and industry requirements and commit to Apple's security and privacy standards can get access to the APIs. Default Contactless App Options Once these features go live, iPhone users can open up the app and then hold the iPhone near an NFC terminal to make a payment. So if you want to pay at a store using your bank's NFC payment service, you'd open your bank app and then double-click the side button on the iPhone to initiate a transaction. Third-party apps will also be able to be set as default contactless apps in the iPhone's Settings app. Transactions will be verified with Face ID or Touch ID. Apple Pay and Apple Wallet The NFC APIs are separate from Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, which is why you will need to open up a third-party app to use its NFC capabilities. Available Countries Apple's NFC and Secure Enclave APIs are coming to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the United States. Support will come to additional locations in the future. Apple already opened up the NFC chip in the European Economic Area. iOS 18.1 Launch Date The new APIs will launch in iOS 18.1, which is an update that Apple is testing at the current time. iOS 18.1 will likely be released a few weeks after iOS 18, and we are expecting to see it sometime in October. In past years, .1 updates have come out between October 20 and October 25, so the week of October 21 is likely when

Double tapping on it will bring up the menu. Use the "close book" option to return to the library. The "exit" option gets you out of the menu and back into the book text. There's a table of contents menu within the main menu which lets you jump around in the book. Lots of othr nice features as well. The rotor works too so you can move by character, word, and line to find out how things are spelled. A two finger swipe downward on the book text will start continuous reading. For example, if the device is named Dan’s Second Dot, speak “Dot, play "Exercise for Spirit Radio" on Dan’s Second Dot. By all rights, this shouldn’t be necessary, but I have had similar instructions work. Check your Alexa app and try to connect again. Do this with fear and trembling. The app is buggy and it doesn’t always work well. Worse, it’s not fully accessible with VoiceOver. Call the Amazon Disability Support Number at 888-283-1678. Be patient. Unfortunately, Amazon tech support is poor. In my experience their staff had great difficulty in understanding that VoiceOver won’t present the screens on the Amazon Alexa app as they see them. The prerequesit is that the Apple Watch screen is off/asleep. In a recent discussion it seems many people say for them this works only reliably if you tap the screen 3 times for hours and minutes and 4 times for minutes. I found with my Apple Watch series 5 40mm that haptic time rarely worked. I now have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 and I discovered the following which probably applies also to my series 5, but I haven’t checked it yet although I still have the series 5 because I’m a bit of a prograstinater when it comes to selling stuff. Here is what I discovered: I have a daily “sleep” focus set which starts at 10:30 PM and it stops at 7 AM. I found that if it is past 10:30 PM, e.g. the sleep focus is active, a 1-finger double tap does nothing except it wakes up the display, but a 3-finger tap starts hours and minutes in haptic time and a quadruple tap does just the minutes. However, during the day, e.g. after 7 AM and before 10:30 PM when the sleep focus is not active, the double tap Apple says one should use works just fine and the triple tap gives me just minutes even though when the sleep focus is active it will give me hours and minutes. I just wrote Apple Accessibility a message regarding this because I assume this is a bug, but not sure until they reply. What I don’t understand is that why we can’t use the regular gesture for haptic time. Yes, haptic time is not actually an accessibility feature, it is available to all Apple Watch users in Settings > Clock as long as you said “Speak Time” to “Control with silent mode” instead of “Always”. According to the article, if you don’t use Voiceover you simply rest 2 fingers on the screen for a moment to get haptic time. Re: an oddity with messaging after 17.0.1 updateIt turns out
Ok, I found the problem. It turns out that the update turned on a setting that I haven't seen before. If you go into accessibility settings and then go down to almost the bottom of the screen you will find a button called Siri. If you click on that and then go down to almost the bottom of the screen again you'll find a button called "announce notifications on speaker". It is a switch button. Mine was on. I turned it off and now my phone behaves as I prefer again. It wakes the phone and VO reads the incoming message to me. an oddity with messaging after 17.0.1 update
This actually started with 17.0. I am seeing a situation where most messages that come in wake the phone and show the home screen with the message near the bottom of the screen. This is normal behavior for my phone. But since 17.0 some messages are coming in with a different message sound than I have set for messages and it doesn't wake the phone and Siri reads the message anyway. This is starting to bug me. I have looked all over the settings and can't find anything that would cause this behavior and can't find a way to make it behave the way it used to. Has anyone else seen this and if so does anyone know how to stop it? IOS 17, is it worth it?
Hi all, I read an article by Kim Komando about the public beta being out now. She obviously didn't talk about any accessibility aspects of 17. I have an apple watch SE. I just installed 9.4 and have noticed something that is rather disappointing. I am seeing a significant delay in VO responding. I eventually figured out that if I found the right row, I could flick between the letters and double tap the one I wanted. I have since deleted the NY Times Crosswords app for these issues. When it opens, the Across clues are listed in a very accessible way, saying how many letters the word has and whether any letters are filled in. If I touch one (not double-tap but just touch), the letters I enter go into that clue. If I double-tap anywhere, a screen displaying the grid opens, and if I touch a square, I’m told which square it is and whether it’s blank or what letter it contains. Doing a scrub gesture returns me to the list of Across clues. So far, so good. However, I can’t find a way to hear the Down clues with the same information. If I touch an Across clue and flick down, there’s a Reverse Direction option, but whether I simply touch that option or double-tap it, the clues don’t switch to the Down clues. The clue at the bottom of the screen, which is the one being edited does change to a Down clue, but it doesn’t tell you how many letters are in the word or whether anything is filled in. If I choose the option to bring up the list of clues, the clues do say if a letter is filled in, but not how many letters total there are or where the filled-in letter is. Re: native calendar discussion
Paula, I looked and the only setting I can see that might help is if you have your calendar sync all events. In my calendar When I first open it it shows me the current day and if I swipe right it will show me the events for today. If I tap on the event it will then show me all events as I described in my earlier posting. Have you double tapped on one of your events for today and looked to see if you can then swipe through the other events in your calendar? I hope this helps some. bluetooth earbuds/phones again
Hi all, My wife is having an issue with her BT earphones and I do not know how to solve it. I hope you can help. The issue is that if she is listening to something and the sound stops due to a silent part of the program or changing to another track or something the earphones will drop the signal. Then when the sound starts again the earphones do not pick back up quickly enough and she misses anything from part of a word to a couple of words. Is this involving a setting to fix it so the earphones do not drop out so quickly or is it an issue where we need to get some different earphones? If different earphones what would you suggest, she likes the earphones that have the part that goes into the ear canal and not just ear buds. She does our mowing and other things where the ear buds drop out of her ear so she prefers the in the ear canal type. another request for suggested weather apps
Hi all, I have seen some discussion about this so I hope this doesn't become offensive. I have seen talk about Carrot Weather and some others. I tried Carrot Weather and I find it absolutely annoying. It has far too much extraneous junk that I do not want. It also doesn't give me any more useful info than the default Iphone weather app does. I am looking for an app that is accessible of course but also gives hourly temp, hourly wind, current conditions, current humidity and sunrise/sunset times. trouble using taptic time if watch is covered by a shirt sleeve
Has anyone else noticed that since updating to watch OS 9 taptic time is harder to activate if the watch is covered by anything. I have used it since figuring out how to use it. It has worked well for me even if it is covered up by my shirt sleeve. However, since updating it is now much harder to activate if covered. a heading issue with IOS 16.0.2 in the VoiceDreamReader app
I just found that if I am looking at book/documents from BookShare in VDR there is a problem. I started to look at periodicals. I then changed the rotor to headings. I then started doing a single finger swipe down to move header to header. I found that VO doesn't announce the new header as it changes. Regarding Siri limitation allegation
OK, I have humiliated myself by failing to observe the golden rule of iPhone investigations, that is shut down your phone and reboot before you begin to think you have a problem. my phone is working fine now with Siri pulling up any musical artist I asked for because I shut the phone down and then tried again. Another new Siri limitation
Since updating to 16, I’m noticing that Siri will not pull up an artist from Apple Music. I am subscribed to this service, and Siri will only check my library, rather than the entire Apple Music catalog. Prior to this, I could say, Siri, play, The Beatles “and this “occurred with no problem, whether it was in my library or not. Joe, thanks for bringing this issue up. I have an iPhone 12 mini and I have updated to 16, now experiencing the same thing myself. echo and echo dot
Hi all, I recall seeing a fairly extensive discussion about these and other devices but didn't pay much attention then because I didn't need one for myself. I still do not need one for myself but my Mom who is 89 this year and is not very tech savvied has lost almost all of her sight and doesn't want to use VO or talkback on her phone. I am thinking of getting one of these because after demoing giving voice commands to my Iphone she is now interested in doing something similar but not to her phone. Her occupational therapist has convinced her that devices like echos and echo dots are more accurate and would work better for her. She says this is based on her experience as an OT. My question is this, which devices seem the most forgiving for less than perfect speech when giving voice commands? We also do not want to spend a ton of money in case this doesn't work out well for her. entering text on watch via iphone keybord
I am trying to connect my watch to my wifi network. When I tap on the network ssid it takes me to a screen where you can apparently scribble with your finger to enter the password and it has a supposed text field. I can't get it to bring up a keyboard and my phone says something about entering text on the watch via the iphone but I can't find anything on the phone screen to activate the keyboard either. How in the world do I do this? Thanks. -- Dan Beaver (KA4DAN) -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. best way to find apps for an apple watch
Hi all, I have my new Apple Watch SE GPS 44mm. I have been learning it and am now ready to remove apps I do not want and add new ones. I already know how to remove apps but I am uncertain about the best way to find apps specifically for the watch. I have tried doing a search in the app store for apple watch and find tons but some seem to be more for i phones and tablet interfacing with the watch or apps that monitor for specific conditions in other ways. Is there a best way to find apps specifically for the apple watch? Thanks. -- Dan Beaver (KA4DAN) -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. how to mute and check the time on an apple watch
Ok, I purchased an apple watch SE GPS 44mm. I love it already. I am trying to figure out though how to mute all the audio sounds and to do the gesture that vibrates the time. I know how to turn speech off but I can't figure out how to mute all the audio sounds so it isn't intrusive. I also can't seem to find any description of how to do the time vibration gesture. which apple watch to choose?
I am considering purchasing an apple watch. I am very unfamiliar with them though as far as which watch has which features. I looked at some of them on a google search but really can't tell which might fit my needs. If anyone could help me understand the features I'd sure appreciate it. My needs are below: I want to be able to tell the time with out the watch speaking it in some situations. I do not really think i need it to communicate via cell signals since I won't be using it for calls when I do not have my phone with me. The times when I don't have my phone with me will be times when I do not want phone calls to come through. I definitely want it to work with VoiceOver. I want to be able to handle texts, emails, phone calls etc when I am also carrying my phone with me. I hope this is sufficient details. Thanks for any thoughts. -- Dan Beaver (KA4DAN) -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: Bose frames
Hey everyone, I have just gotten my Bose frame tenors and can’t say enough about how pleased I have been with this purchase. They are just what I wanted. I am able to go out in public whether in a restaurant or on walks and play soft music, make phone calls, etc. while moving about without having my ears completely closed up with earbuds or some type of covering. The sound is great and they paired very easily with my iPhone. I have not downloaded the app, not sure that I really need to. A great investment though and highly recommend them! Well, I’ll just say that Siri seems to have good days and bad days.
