RE: Continous Reading in Voice Dream

2018-03-21 Thread denise Avant
I have just reported it myself.
I doubt that this is a feature, because it wasn't there in earlier versions,
which gave those of us an option the freedom to read how we wanted, whether its
swiping down or pushing the play button.
So, we will see what happens.

Continous Reading in Voice Dream

2018-03-20 Thread denise Avant
Hello all,

I noticed that when doing continuous reading in Voice Dream, using the
voiceover voices, the last few words at the end of a page repeats again when
switching to the next page. Has anyone had this problem? I am using the
latest versions of Voice Dream, and IOS on my devices.

Thanks.

Air Pods with Victor Reader Trek

Hello all,

I had planned to pair my air pods with my Victor Reader Trek. However,
someone on the list said the volume was barely audible. I wanted to see if
anyone else has experienced this. I also have noticed the volume is rather
low when using the air pods with the Apple watch Series 3.

RE: Bluetooth Speaker question

Thanks. I understand. I was wondering if it was one of those speakers where you
pushed one of the buttons and it would switch between devices.

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, you can connect up to three devices. When you have VoiceOver on all three
devices, it can get a little bit confusing. Whatever device is outputting sound
will take control of the speaker.
The steps I gave above were to enable what’s called party mode. This means you
can have more than one speaker connected via a chain of sorts. The speaker that
is hooked up to the phone is the master speaker, and the other is the sleeve.
So, you could put the other speaker in another room.

My wife, Denise, and I have a speaker. When I cook out, she likes to connect
her speaker to mine and we have full coverage. I am outside, and she is inside.
It is pretty neat!

Hi Denise,

First, you will need the JBL Connect app to rename your speakers and to update
the firmware.

Next, here are the buttons from left to right:

Bluetooth

Volume down

Volume up

Power

Shuffle

Play/pause

On the power button, there is a small button on the right side of the power
button. Press that button on each speaker to have the audio simultaneously
play all three speakers.

As for your question about using the speaker to answer calls, you press the
play/pause button to answer.

I hope this helps.

Subject: Backbeat Sense by Plantronics, was FW: Bluetooth headphones

Greetings,

As promised, I am writing about the Backbeat Sense Bluetooth headphones from
Plantronics that I received yesterday.
These are over the ear headphones that claim 18 hours of talk time, have a
microphone and Plantronics usual attention to detail with the spoken prompts
about battery, pairing, etc.
I had a pair of Bose Mobile over the ear headphones that I really loved, but
they were only wired. They died recently after 7 years of daily use.

I was looking for a stereo headphone that had Bluetooth when I came across
these.
Regular Price, $179. (That is what I paid for the Bose 7 years ago.
B Video/Audio in New York has some for $116.
They come with the micro USB cable for charging, but no wall charger. They
offer one, which we bought, for $6.00.

They come in a very nice box, with also a very nice carrying case.
The selling point for me was that they can connect with two different Bluetooth
devices.
The delightful surprise that I discovered when I opened the box is that they
also have a 3.5 to 3.5 MM cable so you can use them as wired headphones. What
they say about that in the documentation is that you can use them when the
battery dies. So, in actuality, you can use them with three devices.

I would say the sound quality for listening is almost, if not as good as, the
Bose were.

They are very comfortable, and the over the head band is adjustable.
They feel like they are made from very high quality material.
The 3.5 MM cable plugs into the bottom of the right ear cup. The cable has the
microphone and buttons on it that work much the same as the iPhone Airpods.
They take about 3 hours to fully charge.
I have not run them down on the battery yet.
The microphone sounds fine. I did a couple test calls with my wife on
Bluetooth and she had no trouble hearing me.

They do block out most of the surrounding sounds, so I won't be using them
while walking down the street.

I am quite impressed in my first day of having them.

HTH,
Richard

I'll let you know next week.
My wife is getting me the new Plantronics Backbeat Sense stereo Bluetooth
headset. It is over the ear, it claims 18 hours of talk, and lists for $179.
It was on sale briefly for $79 with a code, but I missed it.
She found them through a store called B from new York for $116 with free
shipping. It doesn't come with an AC charger, so she added their charger for
$6.
It does, of course, come with the micro USB charging cable, just not the wall
plug.

Later,
Richard

can someone suggest a good bluetooth headphone that is over the ear, not in the
ear, has a extended battery life, and works well with voiceover?

split screen mode on iipad

2017-06-26 Thread denise Avant
Hello all,

Can someone tell me how to enter the split screen mode on the iPad pro. I
would like to change the size as well. So, perhaps 60 percent on the right
and 40 percent on the left. Also, I am wondering if you can only use split
screen with Apple apps or is it available for other apps. So for example,
would I be able to do a split screen with notes and voice dream? Thanks.

Hello Denise,

Your previous message on this topic was successfully posted to the list.

For the most comprehensive list of steps in order to complete your desired
configuration, you should perform a Google search.

However, given that you already have iTunes on your PC, the broad steps, in
order to see your iCloud items in Outlook in Windows 10 are as follows:

1.
>From the Windows Start/search menu, type in the search string that begins with
>the word Apple. In the results list, you should see an item listed as Apple
>Software Update.

2.
Run the Apple software updater and select to install the Windows iCloud Control
Panel.

3.
Follow the prompts to install the control panel and then restart your computer.

4.
Upon restart, you will be given options in the iCloud control panel that will
allow you to configure iCloud with Microsoft Outlook.

Again, I strongly suggest that you search for how to configure the iCloud
control panel in Windows in order to get a very detailed list of step-by-step
instructions.

Good Luck,

Mark

Also, I maintained my contacts on my new phone. They are in I-cloud. But I

Itunes for windows - need assistance

2017-06-11 Thread denise avant
Hello all,

I have a windows 10 machine. I successfully signed into my account. However,
I'm having several problems.

First, under the accounts menu, it continues to show my name and account as
being dimmed.

Second, I just got the iPhone 7, and while all of my iCloud contacts are on
my phone, it seems I cannot get them to sync with my Windows 10 machine. I
was able to get them to sync before when I had the 6s_+. I was able to get
them in outlook, and now I cannot.

Can anyone make suggestions on any of these problems? Thanks.

Oh by the way, I am using JAWS 18 for a screen reader, and have the latest
version of windows.

Buying an unlocked phone

I am planning to buy a new iPhone. Actually I am just moving down to the

need to purchase the phone locked to that carrier, and just change the sym

Thanks.

Braillant Braille Display with Bible App.

2017-05-07 Thread denise avant
Hello all,

I was wondering if someone is using the Braillant Braille Display with the
Bible App by youversion. If you highlight the read tab at the bottom, it
will take you to some items, including a search box with an edit field. If
I get into the edit field, and type in let's say Hebrews 2-1, it will not
bring up the scripture. In fact, nothing appears on the screen except clear,
cancel and option. I am just trying out the Braillant with this app. Now if
I use the keyboard on the screen, the scripture comes up just fine. Is there
something else I should be doing? Thanks.

Dear Mark,
I have downloaded and installed the i-cloud controller. I am not sure that
icloud.com website works very well with speech as I am having a little
difficulty entering the required code with JAWS. In any case, can you give me
some idea how the controller is suppose to work? I'm just trying to retrieve my
contacts, and that does not appear to be happening right now. Thanks.
BY the way, I am using speech only.

Hello Denise,

You ask an excellent question and you have received some very good advice.

I would like to offer another suggestion that you may find useful.

If you use Microsoft Outlook on your new computer, you may wish to install the
iCloud Control Panel. This simple tool is completely accessible with screen
readers and will allow you to sync/access your iCloud data such as Contacts,
Appointments, Notes, etc via Outlook.

This is the primary way I keep all of my iCloud data in sync across all of my
Windows, Macs, and iOS/Android devices.

Installing the iCloud control panel is easy and Apple keeps it up-to-date for
all necessary versions of Windows including Windows 7.x and 8.x..

Another quick and easy way to access your iCloud data on your PC is to use
iCloud.com. Depending upon your screen/reader of choice, your mileage may vary
but I think it definitely worth a try to access iCloud via your web browser and
see what happens.

Explore all the options and discover what is right for you.

As a Windows user, I value the fact that Apple continues to maintain a definite
bridge between iCloud on both Windows and Mac.

Mark

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the input. I thought there might be some workarounds for some of
the problems. It appears that accessibility with iTunes in windows has gotten
worse over the years. I was just trying to see what was possible when using
iTunes with windows 10 after all there is the need to sync data from the iPhone
and iPad to one's computer from time to time I can remember when some of us
upgraded to iOS 10. A lot of us simply connected our cables to our computers to
download
I was just trying to find out whether I could sync my contacts and other
material such as photos and notes from my phone when using iTunes in windows. I
guess not. Thanks for all your help.

VO issue while using wired earphones

Hello all,
I have upgraded to IOS 10 on my 6 S plus phone. I noticed that when I plug in
my wired earphones, I only get sound from VO out of one ear. However, if I
listen to music or podcasts, I get volumes from both ears. I don’t recall
resetting any settings that might have caused the problem. If anyone has an
answer, it would be greatly appreciated. I did not have this problem before
upgrading.

Re: Jamb paring question

2016-08-16 Thread denise avant
Actually, I was wanting to use it with the Mac. I do use it with bluetooth when
using the phone. However, when I have used it with the Mac, I found that the
signal is not always consistent, and the speech goes back and forth between the
internal speaker of my Macbook air and the mini jambox. So, I thought I would
try to connect using the cable. And the last time I tried it, when I turned on
the speaker, it announced that it was in paring mode, and paired with the
phone. So, I thought perhaps I could do something to switch back and forth on
the speaker itself, so I would not have to tell the phone to forget the device.
I know the Bose speakers do have dedicated buttons to use as bluetooth or
traditional wired connection. So I was just checking to see if I could perform
a similar function with the Jambox.

Thank you.

I have Amazon prime, and wanted to play an old television show on my iPhone,

fact, I don’t even find it in the watch list when I go to it. does anyone have

Hello,
I purchased extra storage space. None of my files are MP3 files. I have less

followed by iCloud sync. I've tried tapping on the iCloud button below the item
not yet downloaded, but that doesn't do anything. Does anyone have the support

Volume of VO on Apple watch one paired with a bluetooth headset

Hello all,
I have one of the older plantronics bluetooth headsets. I notice that when I
pair it with the watch, the vo volume seems not to be as loud, even when turned
up to the maximum. this does not seem to be the case with the iphone, as the
volume of vo seems fine, and in fact, I do not even have to increase it to
100%. Is the problem of the volume caused by the older plantronics device or is
it just that the watch is just a smaller device, and not a great of volume can
be generated. thanks.

split view on iPad Air II

2015-11-19 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I have an iPad Air II, and am trying to invoke the split screen mode. As I
understand it, you have to tap the status bar, and swipe to the left while in
an app supporting the feature. I assume that notes would be one of the
supported apps. In any case, once you swipe left, you should see a list of
supported apps. However, I do not find any such list. Can anyone tell me what I
may have missed. I am of course running IOS 9. Thanks.

Amazon echo app

2015-11-07 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I just downloaded the echo app to my phone instead of my iPad air II. I am
wondering if the Amazon echo works on the Iphone or only on the Ipad. I am
asking because I have gone through the set up twice, told I was connected, but
Alexa does not respond to any of my questions. Also, when I go back to my
phone’s setting, i don’t see the echo connected anywhere.
If echo works on the iPhone, did I skip something during setup?
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Amazon echo app

2015-11-07 Thread denise avant
les,
I just got mine. I can see using it while in the kitchen, and to listen to
prime. I don’t have all of the home kit stuff to turn off lights and things
like that. I just told her to start reading an audible book. I would also use
it to to grocery lists and even to make a to do list. It’s too bad you can’t use
it to control other non-azon apps on your iPhone, like the bard app. I haven’t
tried playing podcasts or radio stations in tune in.
I finally got it to connect after reconnecting to wifi for the third time.
basically, I think it is good for times when you do not want to touch your
phone or iPad to do things - a hands free device. Sirri is good, but I still
find she misses a lot of things, and even though she knows my voice, she will
randomly respond to her name, and words like seriously or series.

iPad Air II - side by side

Hello all,
I want to take advantage of the new feature in IOS 9 using the side by side
view. I am wondering if anyone has used this yet, particularly with a bluetooth
keyboard. I’m wondering for example if it would be possible to do this with
Apple’s notes app, and Voice Dream Reader App. It could be a handy tool for
making notes about an article while reading it.

Apple Watch - bluetooth earpiece and vo

2015-09-15 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I am wondering what bluetooth single earpiece works well with the Apple watch.
I noticed that vo was not very loud when I used the plantronics I have. I
increased the vo volume to 100 using the apple watch app on my phone, because I
don’t have the gesture on the watch itself down yet. In any case, I just
noticed the vo volume coming through the earpiece was not as loud on the
watch as when I use it with the phone.
thanks for any help.

However, the StandScan is the most flimsy of the bunch if you plan to take it
down and set it up very often.

The Fopydo will take any sized phone and even an iPad Mini and is pretty
sturdy being made out of corrugated plastic.

The ScanJig will take any sized phone and even an iPad and is made out of
hard plastic and is the most durable, but also the most bulky if you are
planning to move it from place to place.

The Giraffe Reader, which isn’t talked about much, only fits a very limited
number of phones and if you then get a different sized phone or case, you may
have to buy a new stand. It is also the most expensive so I no longer
 recommend it.

I have the first three, StandScan, ScanJig and Fopydo at my office. The only
one I would buy for myself is the Fopydo.

itunes?

2015-08-12 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I just launched Itunes on my Mac. All of a sudden I am presented with a screen
welcoming me to itunes. I have not seen anything like this since I started to
use the mac years ago. I used itunes over the weekend and it opened fine
without the welcome screen. I bought a book from te ibooks store on my phone a
few minutes ago, but I can’t imagine that has anything to do with what I am
seeing. How do I navigate this, and sign in with my id. I do not and have not
signed up for apple music.
thanks for any help.

Re: Replacing Braille Notetaker with iDevice

2015-06-20 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
Sometimes I wonder if just because we ask Apple to provide better Braille
display support, people think we are unnecessarily critical of Apple. I am
forever grateful to Apple for building in accessibility to all of its products.
What Apple has done over the last six years is positively wonderful. I never
thought I’d be able to do so many things with a visual device, and pay the same
price as everyone else. But that does not mean that blind people cannot and
should not point out a flaw and demand better in a product. I listen to other
podcasts having nothing to do with accessibility and Apple, and the sighted
community is not hesitant to say when something needs to work better.
If one of the screen reader companies fails to provide proper Braille display
support in Windows, those of us, who use Windows are all over the company.
Requesting good Braille input and output on an Apple device is not a ridiculous
one. apple is the only one who can make the braille display support better. I
don’t know if Apple cannot or will not make the Braille experience better. But
voiceover belongs to apple, and I applaude those who are willing to stand up
and ask for better.
Jonathan talks about the children all of the time. But blind adults need to be
literate as well.
Perhaps people have their own reasons for wanting to simply rely on speech
output. but I know there are times when people who cannot see well enough to
read the screen need to use Braille.
If someone has a hearing impairment in addition to blindness, then a Braille
display with an Apple device may be essential to using the device.
Also, there may be times when you need to read and write Braille without
disturbing others or having the constant feedback of the speech.

Yet, this is the majority opinion. Some people may be more worried about
braille which is a good thing to have as an option. and blind children must
have the option to learn braille. but somehow it's apple's responsibility to
keep the braille alive, is disingenuous in my opinion. your 6,500 device is
not fast or durable or efficient enough even for the blind as apple devices
have become. those who work in the field of assistive devices have their
vvested interest in bringing in the braille issue with some emotions about
 survival and identity.

 observations, for what they're worth.

I used a notetaker in school and college, but slowly used it less and less.
Today, I use a Macbook Air and iPhone for everything. Sure, sometimes it's
not quite as efficient at certain things, but it more than makes up for that
in the app selection and raw horsepower. Plus, the efficiency offered by
Dropbox, iCloud, Handoff, and other cloud services can't be forgotten; sure,
typing your notes into a notetaker might be a few seconds faster, but you'll
have to spend more time syncing up those notes to your computer later. With
my setup, I can type notes on either device and have them appear instantly
on the other, and with braille screen input or Mbraille on iOS, I can do it
 in braille.

A lot of it comes down to what you'll need and how you operate. As you said,
the central problem is that a display plus an iOS device is cheaper, more
modular, more powerful, and more versatile. However, a dedicated notetaker
is more efficient, for certain tasks, and can more easily be used on the go
or in noisy situations. Unfortunately, there's no perfect solution to the
 problem right now.

Excellent blog post as always. Only, while I agree children are crucial,
adult professionals should receive equal consideration. I was beginning to

but your points give me pause. I need to be able to be as productive as I
can be using Braille on a dedicated notetaker. The apps on the more
sophisticated Braille Sense are great but still limited. That means I could
go for a compromise, purchasing one of the awkward hybrids like the Braille
Edge or VarioUltra, but it doesn’t seem as though I could fully harness the
horse power of the iDevice if the interaction between display and iOS is
efficient. Any further thoughts welcomed. My point here isn’t to stir up a
debate of notetakers versus displays. I need to be productive on the move.
A full notetaker can be cost-prohibitive. A display doesn’t seem to be the
most efficient option. LOL I thought we’d made a little more

Braille with vo in voice dream reader

2015-03-11 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I am using voiceover with the focus 40 Braille display in voicedream on my iPad
mini 2. While reading a document, I do not see any of the text from the
document on the screen in Braille. I do however see in Braille all of the
controls, home, action etc. Shouldn't I be able to see the text of the document
in Braille while using vo? Is there some feature I need to enable? thanks.

Hi,
I was using VO, and not the internal voices. I thought Braille was available
since VO supports Braille. Yet, as I stated, I see no text from my document
whatsoever while in VO.
I just wanted to be clear. Thanks.

Here's what I did to get it there:

 1. Went to the folder Documents\iTunes\iTunes Media\Books on my Windows XP
system and found the folder for Shelly Brisbin which was the next level
 down.
 2. I then copied the single epub file containing her book to my Dropbox
folder where I was able to open it in Voice Dream Reader by selecting the

 Hi,

From my understanding, ibooks format can't be play on voice dream
reader, or any of the Ebook reader, but ibooks itself. It is a special
format, just like with Kindel Books.

Hello all,
I am wondering how to copy songs to a playlist in itunes? I have not done this
for a bit. But I use to interact with the song, then do command shift-m which
brought up the menu. Now when I do that, I see some choices, but not moving or
copying songs to a playlist. any help would be appreciated.

Hello all,
I am wondering if anyone uses Omnifocus on the Iphone or the Ipad. It is a

Are there any particular pointers to using it? what does it have that other
apps of this kind might not?
I read you can have various task lists for work, home, extracurricular
activities. But in the little time I have played with the app I haven’t seen
where this is at? will it play a chime when something is due? thanks.

the document as a txt file. I have been trying to send the text file back to
dropbox. when I tap on open in dropbox, nothing seems to happen, except dropbox
briefly opens, and I am placed back in the list of saved options. the file is
not in dropbox. Did I miss something? thanks.

Ibooks and Focus 40

2014-11-05 Thread denise avant
Hello everyone,

I have a PDF adobe text file I imported into Ibooks. I paired the
focus 40 with my Ipad. While the various buttons show up in Braille,
none of the text shows up though voiceover reads it just fine. Is
there any setting I need to adjust.
By the way, I tried reading the exact same file on a Windows computer
with Jaws under adobe, and the text shows up on the focus 40 just
fine. Actually, the file is reading better under windows.

adobe on iPad and iphone

2014-10-30 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
Adobe now has the adobe reader on the Iphone and Ipad along with other adobe
products. I have played with the reader a little bit just to read some adobe
text files. It seems that the buttons are mostly labeled and I can actually
read the document. But what I have not been able to do is use the swipe gesture
to read the entire document. when I touch the screen, vo reads that the page,
and stops. I have to change the page manaully. Does anyone else have any
experience with Adobe. I realize there are other ways to read Adobe text files,
but since the app was free, I just wanted to give this a try.

read2go app and iOS 8.02

Hello all,
I was wondering if Read2go works with IOS 8. I recently downloaded a book to

listed. I did nothing to manually delete the book. And so I am wondering if vo
is just not announcing the title.
Thanks.

Re: ibooks across all devices

2014-10-07 Thread denise avant
ok, got it. I had downloaded a pdf document from dropbox on my Ipad into
itunes, and thought It would appear in Ibooks on both the phone and Ipad
because of Icloud.
Perhaps what I could do is to simply import the documents into itunes, and then
sync the phone and the ipad. But I wonder if all of the bookmarks and places
would be maintained.

I don't think you can unless you download the books from the iBooks Store.
You do this by turning on books in settings, iTunes and App Stores under the
automatic downloads heading. In iTunes on your mac or PC go to Preferences,
