Re: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-22 Thread Brian Fischler
Can someone who has gotten the new pods confirm that you can listen to audio
with only one air pod in? I read about an auto pause feature that would kick in
when you take one air pod out of your ear, so want to make sure you can listen
to audio with only one of the pods in your ear since I walk around most of the
time with only one bud in so I can hear what is going on around me. Thanks,

2016-12-21 Thread Penny Reeder
The possible lag is my biggest concern as well. A few years ago, I
received blue tooth headphones as a very nice gift, but the lag made
them impossible for me to use while typing using the on-screen key
board. I would be very interested in learning whether or not the lag
is there, or if it is small enough to be insignificant.

Has anyone tried these with an iPhone 6 / 6 Plus, and is there any lag?

I got my AirPods today and have been playing with them for a couple of
hours now. The first thing to say is that there is some delay or lag which
is borderline acceptable. It’s just a fraction of a second but you can
definitely notice it. I think I’ll get used to it but may have to stick to
wired earbuds for my Mac as that’s what I’m on for 90% of the day.

Also I was hoping that there would be some sort of magic whereby whichever
device was active (i.e. being used) the AirPods would automagically switch
to but this doesn’t seem to be the case unless I’m missing something. I’m
running iOS 10 and Sierra latest versions on both and the pairing with
both was magic – but no automatic swapping between both. For whichever
device I use I need to manually switch the source away from one and to the
 other.

Apart from that I’m loving them and feeling very futuristic.

 Thanks, Robin

AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-21 Thread Robin Christopherson
Keith

I don’t believe they have any active noise cancelling capability and I’d say
that they block out as much noise as the earPods (i.e. very little) so you are
always aware of what’s going on around you.

In my experience they also leak as much noise as the normal earPods (i.e. not
very much) but then I don’t listen to music - only talk-based content like
podcasts and books and also at a moderately low volume as I want to still be
able to hear when I’m 100.

Basically they are identical to earPods in every respect apart from the stems
are slightly thicker and now wound in cross-section (as opposed to oval like
the earPods) and, as I mentioned in my last msg, perhaps the side speaker is
ever so slightly less protuberant which makes them more comfortable for me.

Thanks, Robin

Re: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-20 Thread Kevin Chao
Apple W1 Bluetooth headsets (AirPods, PowerBeats3) do *NOT* have
multi-point.
Multi-point is the technology in LG Platinum, Jaybird's and others that
allows pairing and switching between multiple devices (Mac/iPhone). The
user scenario is having a multi-point Bluetooth LE headset paired to Mac
with VoiceOver, get a phone call, answer it via headset, continue working
on Mac after, or close Mac, resume with iPhone VoiceOver, and no need to
re-connect.
While the Beats3 (e.g. Solo and Power) do have the in-line mic/remote, I'd
not recommend them due to the huge discomfort and low audio quality. I
tried Beats several years ago, hoped they would have improved after being
acquired by Apple, but they're nothing more than for "looks".
I was not impressed that the W1 is only optimized for iOS 10, not Sierra,
or TV/WatchOS. e.g. the iOSiPhonerange, quality, and auto-connect works
only for 10 devices (e.g. /iPad/iPod Touch). However, if you're using a Mac
with AirPods or Beats with W1, it's required to manually connect them each
time. This is a regression compared to the Bluetooth headsets that support
multi-point, not to mention the multi-point ones have better comfort and
sound quality than the W1's.
I'm very much looking forward to whatever Bluetooth 5 has to offer.

Or were you able to get your air pods? I know somebody that's been dying for a
pair. From what I understand, you can't get any from most stores until 12
January. Thank you and advance for any help.

It’s fractional but I’d say that the main part of the AirPods that goes into
your ear were is everso slightly larger in circumference and very slightly
rounder so that the bit that has the main speaker that points out to the side
is less pronounced and the whole is more circular as a result. I always had
some discomfort with the sticky-out bit in my ears as it seemed to have
somewhat of a sharp edge to that speaker outlet and that seems to be less
pronounced here. So it may be that it fits into your ears more snugly. They
certainly fit well into mine and don’t feel like they’re going to fall out.

I’m glad Larry isn’t experiencing any delay – it’s so fractional that it only
really comes into it’s own when quickly arrowing through items on the Mac.

Thanks, Robin

button. Double tap and you are connected. It will show the battery level of
both the right AirPods, left AirPod, and the case when the case is open.

RE: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Anthony,

I guess it all depends on what you consider delay or what you expect. I have
the Voyager Edge as well and while they are not bad there still is a delay over
wired headsets. It is just the nature of bluetooth at this point, there simply
is no bluetooth headset or speaker which doesn't have at least a tiny bit of
lag. If you type something when using the Voyager Edge there is a small amount
of lag as you lift your finger and it writes the letter, for me it's enough to
be annoying. For just using the phone, swiping and tapping etc. it's not as
noticeable.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-19 Thread Richard Turner

I do not hardly notice any delay with my $35 single ear Plantronics M55.
I also have a pair of over the ear stereo bluetooth headphones that I think
cost me $25. There isn't any noticeable delay with them either. For the money,
I will stick with the cheap ones.
You'd think Apple could do something about the delay.

borderline acceptable. It's just a fraction of a second but you can definitely
notice it. I think I'll get used to it but may have to stick to wired earbuds
for my Mac as that's what I'm on for 90% of the day.

Also I was hoping that there would be some sort of magic whereby whichever
device was active (i.e. being used) the AirPods would automagically switch to
but this doesn't seem to be the case unless I'm missing something. I'm running
iOS 10 and Sierra latest versions on both and the pairing with both was magic -
but no automatic swapping between both. For whichever device I use I need to
manually switch the source away from one and to the other.

Apart from that I'm loving them and feeling very futuristic.

Thanks, Robin

Re: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-19 Thread Shaf Patel
It's bluetooth, they're not really all that special and there's bound to
be a delay.

Re: AirPods - first impressions

2016-12-19 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi Robin,

How do these fit? The EarPods didn’t stay in my ears. Are the AirPods shaped
at all differently? Are they hard or padded?

Thank you.

Lois

Subject: AirPods - first impressions

Dear listers

I got my AirPods today and have been playing with them for a couple of hours
now. The first thing to say is that there is some delay or lag which is
borderline acceptable. It’s just a fraction of a second but you can definitely
notice it. I think I’ll get used to it but may have to stick to wired earbuds
for my Mac as that’s what I’m on for 90% of the day.

Also I was hoping that there would be some sort of magic whereby whichever
device was active (i.e. being used) the AirPods would automagically switch to
but this doesn’t seem to be the case unless I’m missing something. I’m running
iOS 10 and Sierra latest versions on both and the pairing with both was magic –
but no automatic swapping between both. For whichever device I use I need to
manually switch the source away from one and to the other.

Apart from that I’m loving them and feeling very futuristic.

Thanks, Robin
