Re: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?
Hello All, I have used both the Dexcom G5/G6 and the Libre Link sensors. I liked certain features of both devices. First the Dexcom system: The Dexcom system is the best sensor or CGM on the market here in the US. That is a plus and a minus as it works the best and has the best application on iOS and Android, the down fall is it’s a very expensive system and some insurance companies will not cover it. I at times with the Dexcom get a overloaded with the notifications it spits at you all day long. I know they are there to help but sometimes the notifications are a bit much. This is where the Libre system is a little nicer. The Dexcom application is fully accessible and easy to navigate and use. The only down fall is that the blood sugar graph is not accessible to Voiceover users. You can however download the Dexcom Clarity application to accessibly view your blood sugar trends and also see your insulin intake averages assuming you enter them using either the InPen insulin system or use the events section of the Dexcom application. You can even set your DR up with a option to view all of your data from your records. Libre system: This system is great because of the affordability. It’s much cheaper then the Dexcom with a few trade offs. It will not send you notifications to alert you of high or low blood sugars, rapidly raising or dropping blood sugars, etc. You will have to scan the sensor with an iPhone that is at least an iPhone 7 or newer. The application is usable with VoiceOver but there are a lot of unlabeled buttons and mislabeled buttons. To get VoiceOver to announce the trend arrow (direction blood sugar is going, slowly falling, slowly raising, falling quickly, raising quickly, etc you will have to turn on the TTS function in settings of the app).As stated in a previous email in the thread you can get a transmitter that will allow you to utilize a 3rd party application that will scan the sensor every 5 minutes and send it to your phone. There are 2 different options and they are both limited in accuracy and you will have to calibrate the system multiple times through out the day. Ultimately the choice is up to you and what your comfort level is with pricing and what your Dr recommends. They both can be used by visually impaired diabetics and will work in the long run. Are use the Librelink and I have no problems with it at all. Dicks come does have an extra transmitter, but everything is built in to the sensor on the other. I do miss the ability to sync the numbers, as sometimes it can be many points off. I tested, when I first put it in. After the hour layover. RE: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?
Sorry Richard, The libre has the need for the nfc chip which the Dexcom doesn’t Dexcom I believe uses Bluetooth. However the libre has the ability now to utilise a third party product called the miao miao which is a Bluetooth dongle that sits on top of the libre freestyle sensor. This then links to the phone an reads every 5 seconds passing that on to the phone and the libre software. When I looked at the miao miao third quarter of 2019 you needed to have a developers account for itunes to be able to get the software the miao miao uses to stay active longer than 7 days. Or jail break the phone for the app to work longer than the 7 days, Note this was approx. 5 months ago, so may well now have been changed so it continues to work on. I ope that makes better sense. I think people are making this topic more confusing than it needs to be by not being clear. The Dexcom 6 works all the way down to the 5s. I am pretty sure the comments about not working without some jail breaking was concerning the Bluetooth dongle for the Freestyle system if someone wanted to use it with an older iPhone. But, they were not clear since the subject line has both names. Everything I've read about the Dexcom and heard from a couple people I know, is that it is more accessible. Sensor (all of the current systems use a small wire that is embedded into your skin, reading the interstitial fluid). 1. These are disposable. 2. These have some local memory. 3. These have some sort of power source (but since disposable, not user interesting) 4. These cannot be reinserted 2. Reader : get information from the sensor 1. For FDA certification purposes, these were developed first; may be "mandatory" to write an RX for 2. These may communicate directly with the sensor, or via an intermediary. 1. Dexcom chose to make the communication to the sensor via Bluetooth. This is well integrated with the sensor, so it's not so obvious that you've got some other channel to the sensor. By using bluetooth, phones and other medical devices can communicate directly and across a fair distance. It also provides for true continuous monitoring (although what's implemented is discrete ... 1 measurement every few minutes ... which is more than adequate for treatment purposes, even automated insulin delivery systems) 2. Freestyle uses NFC, which means data is only transferred in batches, at user initiated intervals 1. The "pro" version only stores 1 reading for every 15m or so; but stores a full 2 weeks of data. These aren't supposed to be sold to individuals, but to clinics and require a special reader (the iphone app refuses to talk to the pro version of the sensors) Where it gets a bit messy is in the 2.1 vs 2.2 area. There are a couple of vendors of "dongles" which speak NFC on one side (to the sensor) and bluetooth to your phone (or whatever). The dexcom system *includes such a device* but it's not so obvious that's what is does (and it may not use NFC, whatever the communication between sensor and transmitter is proprietary to dexcom). As to why they made it disposable ... other than profit, I have no doubt it made the FDA certification easier. Nothing exposed, nothing the user can screw up. Nothing that degrades over the expected lifetime of the device. On the plus side, it makes the dexcom easier to interface with and use (since it's well integrated it mechanically stays in place well, etc.). The Libre, lacking that extra bit ... is less expensive to operate, but it's not suitable for folks who need: 1. real time alarms 2. integration with insulin pumps or other delivery systems However, third parties stepped up, reverse engineered the NFC interface and provide a *reusable* transmitter that closes the gap between the dexcom and Libre systems. However, since it's not provided by Abbot, the quality of the integration is mixed (better if you want to hack on the code and customize, less good if you want an out of the box solution). I'm surprised that Abbot didn't step up and provide a certified factory solution (but the FDA approval process is slow, painful and expensive. So perhaps they are still in process; perhaps it's a next generation thing. I have no inside information). Since the dexcom solution is all provided by the factory (and they do quality work) I believe it is both more accessible, and easier to use. Since the Libre+third party solution has at least one extra party, there's both ease of use and accessibility challenges. The cost savings may make it worthwhile. Or, if you really only need the in-depth, detailed *retrospective* statistics, the Libre solution (minus the extra transmitter) may suit your needs well (e.g. a non-insulin dependent individual who "just" needs to continue tweaking their diet ... or medication regimen and not make minute by minute treatment adjustments). Indeed, the "pro" version which your clinic reads the results after 2 weeks may be ideal (I used it for my diabetic cat for a few weeks). Personally, I fall in the middle. I don't need alerts; but I do need enough feedback to make optimal food choices. The bluetooth transmitter isn't vital, but it does provide better data resolution ... but it is a bit of a PITA (perhaps after a few months I'll have worked out the kinks for my personal use cases). I'd have rather stayed with Dexcom, but the cost savings was substantial ... because my insurance won't cover a CGM (I'm not sick enough) ... which is kinda backwards, in that it will help delay getting that sick. Oh well, re-engineering our healthcare system is something we've outsourced to lawyer/politicians. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.

I understand the disposable sensors, but what is the disposable transmitter for? Sounds like one more piece of equipment that you have to keep track of that the Libre doesn't have. If you could explain what this transmitter does, it would sure help. Thanks for your in-depth answer and explanation. It cleared a lot of things up for me. Re: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?
I think people are making this topic more confusing than it needs to be by not being clear. The Dexcom 6 works all the way down to the 5s. I am pretty sure the comments about not working without some jail breaking was concerning the Bluetooth dongle for the Freestyle system if someone wanted to use it with an older iPhone. But, they were not clear since the subject line has both names. Everything I've read about the Dexcom and heard from a couple people I know, is that it is more accessible. RE: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?
Hi Greg, That's interesting The documentation I read said the USA only had 10 days, I wondered why that would be when everyone else is 14. But thanks for that correction. And yes the app could be somewhat better, I've tried sharing through another system but that didn't work for some reason either. I wish they'd release the Libre 2 in to NZ, It's got a Bluetooth adapter built in so it talkl to the phone from a distance. I think it's out in the UK already. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Greg Wocher Sent: Monday, 3 February 2020 12:47 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom? Yes the NFC chip is what the sensors and the phone use to communicate however there is a device available for each of the products that allows them to talk using blutetooth to your phone. The Dexcom is I believe their own product The freestyle uses a third party product called the miaomiao I believe this is Chinese but that?s only a guess. With this product currently or still I believe you have to either jailbreak your phone or set the software up as an apple ddeveloper. this may have changed in the passed couple of months but it was like this when I started using the freestyle 6 months ago. Yeah kay, The phone needs to have the NFC chip which I think Richard said came out in the 7. I have an 11 so don’t need to worry but have used the freestyle for six plus months now and I love it I know someone that uses the Dexcom and they do say it has better features re useability From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Kay Malmquist Sent: Sunday, 2 February 2020 6:39 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom? Hi all, Yes, this is very much iPhone related. I have a question about two glucose readers. One is the Freestyle Libre and the other is the Dexcom. I know that the Libre app is accessible but I don't know anything about the Dexcom. My doctor wants me to get the Dexcom because it has alarms and the Libre does not. The downside of it is that you have to enter in codes every so often. To me, if it is accessible that doesn't really matter because there is always Aira or some way to work that out. I also noticed that the Libre link app does not work on the 6 S. Anyone know why? Or do you have a customer service number? Does anyone have any answers or where I can go to find out more? RE: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?
The libre doesn’t by default sync with the phone, You need to wave the phone near it. Dexcom does sync auto with the phone from a somewhat distance There is an adapter you can get called a miaomiao that you can stick on to the libre which uses Bluetooth to sync with the phone.
