Re: Just Used Be My Eyes for The First Time

2015-02-04 Thread Wayne Merritt
I saw a post on Twitter from be My Eyes where they say that if you
wait on hold for 15 or 20 minutes, or more, then disconnect and
reconnect. They say it is not a problem of not enough volunteers, but
rather of their server matching everyone appropriately. They recommend
waiting no more than 5 minutes for a volunteer.

I too had my first experience with Be My eyes about 10 days ago when i
needed to identify some medicines. It was 8pm Saturday night my time
and I spoke with a woman from Australia. It was cool.

Re: Just Used Be My Eyes for The First Time

2015-02-03 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
I too have used Be my eyes for the first time and gotten a good response,
however some thoughts keep nagging me and i probably should write the
developers rather than ranting about it here. The question that nags me now is
the following: The app is very good for things like looking at a microwave oven
to see if it’s correctly set and other such tasks, but what happens when i
encounter language specific things? As i live in Sweden all the text on food
and such of course is in Swedish. Now yesterday i got a helper who by the
accent or what you might call it lives in the United States. This isn’t a
problem as long as you have things like Microwaves, Electronic stuff and so on
where text is in english but what if i was about to identify food?
This is of course a rettorical question but it looks like even if i mention the
languages i understand i get helpers from other parts of the world.

Finally had a reason to use Be My Eyes. I wasn’t sure what temperature the

Seems to be getting more popular, because there are now 112,000 sighted

Did you try marking down just Swedish in the language settings before making
your help request? I have marked multiple languages in so have gotten an
English speeker from Shanghai but would be interested to see if one could
narrow down the language options.
Love the app so far. Have some friends that have already signed up as

is the following: The app is very good for things like looking at a microwave
oven to see if it’s correctly set and other such tasks, but what happens when
i encounter language specific things? As i live in Sweden all the text on
food and such of course is in Swedish. Now yesterday i got a helper who by
the accent or what you might call it lives in the United States. This isn’t a
problem as long as you have things like Microwaves, Electronic stuff and so
on where text is in english but what if i was about to identify food?
This is of course a rettorical question but it looks like even if i mention
the languages i understand i get helpers from other parts of the world.

I figure that, as they are volunteers, they are not paid, and that is OK
with them, otherwise, they would not have volunteered.

As for where they are gotten from, when you first install and open the app,
you choose whether you are a blind person or a volunteer.

The funding stream covers the infrastructural requirements like the server,

I am a huge fan of this app and this concept, it's a very practical use of
technology. The guy who had this idea actually popped up on this list not
long after coming up with it. Perhaps others who have been on the list for a
