What is the mobile version? I'm guessing m.audible.com? Vicky, You cannot buy books in the app. Apple has put a stop to that about a year or so ago, all you can do with the app is download and listen to the books you purchased either on the website with your computer or by going to the mobile version of the website with Safari. Kawal, this is not going to be much help, but I've been using Audible for years, and I've never felt the need to bother with the samples. Re: Buying books from Audible.
Surely, a reader makes you want to listen to a book. I don't know about any one on this list, but if a person can't read the book well, what I mean, if an actor can't describe what is going on well, then I for one would not buy it. For me, a person has to bring a book to life if it's being read other than you. Kawal. Hi Kawal, Just to clarify, you are going to Audible.com in Safari, right? For me each book has a Listen Excerpt Image or I think that is how Voiceover reads it. RE: Buying books from Audible.
Hi, Double tap where it says listen to an excerpt image and the sample will start playing. That is actually a button, even though VoiceOver doesn't acknowledge it. You probably already know this, but once you get the book purchased and in your library, you can then down load it directly into the app. If you can afford it and plan to read at least 12 books in the next year, I highly recommend the Gold membership for $150 (roughly.) You get 12 credits that you can use all at once or however you like and since most books are 1 credit that comes out to about $12.50 per book. Obviously, that is in U.S. dollars ... To be even more fair, whether a book is badly read is very subjective. I have come across one book that I would really like to read, but I don't like the reader. The book is Folly by Laurie R. King. The reader is probably fine, I just don't like the way he reads so I am not going to buy that book. I agree with this. In fact there have been times when I've purchased an Audible book over the free one available from NLS BARD simply because I liked the narrator better. RE: Buying books from Audible.
Hi Kawal, Are you subscribed with a monthly membership? I have never seen an option to purchase 12 or 24 credits when I log in to Audible.com with my user name and password. I have the Platinum Membership which is $22.95 US a months and for that I get 2 credits which means just under $11.50 per credit and since just about all books are 1 credit it's basically $11.50 a book. The prices you mentioned for 12 or 24 credits are quite a bit lower even if I convert them to US Dollars. As a member I often get promotions where I can buy 3 extra credits for $34, so basically about the same, about 11.35 a credit and of course the best offers are those occasional sales when they have a list of 100 or 200 books for $4.95 a book or the Buy 3 books for 2 credits promo which sometimes happens. I guess maybe they have different offers in the UK as they have here in the US/Canada. Hi Guys, Also don't forget that you do have a return guaranty, if you buy a book and don't like it just call their customer service and you get your credit back or a refund back to your credit card if you paid for the book. I assume they may draw the line if you do that with every second or third book you buy especially because even though they remove the book from your library you can still listen to the entire book if you already downloaded it. RE: Buying books from Audible.
Hi Kawal and Richard, If Kawal can buy 24 credits for 109 Pounds that currently is only about $175 or $176 US so if you can buy the same for $225 it's cheaper in the UK. I just never have seen an option for a bulk purchase, I have to check this out because I always need more credits than the 2 I get every months and even at $225 for 24 credits this works out to $9.38 per credit which is less than the $11.48 I pay per credit with my Platinum Membership. If I can buy these credits at that price I could downgrade to a Gold Membership for $14.95 and just buy extra credits for that lower price. RE: Buying books from Audible.
Hi Keith, Yes, I actually just called them and was told about buying upfront. I wasn't aware of that just as I only learned last week about their return policy. I just did the math and the 24-credit Platinum Membership paid for the year is $229.50 whereas it is $22.95 a months which works out to $275.40 a year. By paying upfront you save $45.90. The good thing is that by paying upfront I can also buy another 24 credits anytime, so if I used up my 24 credits after 4 months and am willing to pay another $229.50 I can immediately get another 24 credits where with the monthly plan you just have to wait for your next 1 or 2 credits to arrive depending on whether you have Gold or Platinum. Buying annually works out to $9.56 per credit which is not bad for a full-length audio book and I only buy unabridged novels and rarely do I buy a book that is less than 9 or 10 hours in length. Of course you still get the $4.95 promotions or by 3 books for 2 credits etc. It's actually scary how much I spend on books, I signed up for my Audible membership in March of 2010 so I have now been a member for 2 years and 7 months and when I just checked my Listener Page I realized I bought 513 books in that time with 82 this year. Only approx. 62 or 63 were from the credits I normally get which leaves approx. . 450 books I purchased either by buying the 3 credits for $34 promo or a $4.95 promo etc. Of course in the old days when we didn't have a super portable player like an iPhone or even the Stream or Booksense it was harder to listen everywhere you go. The good thing is that I don't mind listening to good books repeatedly and along with a few hundred titles I have on my computer from before I have plenty I haven't listened to in years. Of course I wish Audible offered an even better membership option to people like me who spend so much so that the price per credit/book dropped down to maybe around $6 or $7. I calculated at one point that given I spend about $11 for the credits I buy and I buy a lot on their $4.95 sales that my average price per book is about $8, so not so bad after all. Actually, the return option, or at least the info (I haven't tried returning anything) is now right on the website and the annual payment has been there for years. You see it if you go to change my membership. there is a gold monthly and gold annual and there is a platinum monthly and a platinum annual. Also, if you are on a monthly plan or don't want to renew yet, I notice there have been offers lately to buy some extra credits. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Yes, 12 credits and 24 credits are part of the membership plan. If you log into Audible, go to join a membership plan, the choices are listed there. Kawal. Re: Buying books from Audible.
Another trick you can do as I've done this often in the past as I've been a member since 2010, is buy some credits, cancel your membership immediately. Then two minutes, rejoin and you get another load of credits. You can do this as often as you like as it's not against their policy. My X husband found this out by accident so I tried it and it's worked ever since. Kawal. On Oct 25, 2012, at 5:41 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Keith, Yes, I actually just called them and was told about buying upfront. Hi Kawal, You used to buy books directly from the app, but Apple has made that impossible. I guess it could still be possible if Audible which of course means Amazon were to agree to pay Apple their percentage whatever that is for every book purchased through the app. By the way, what do you mean it's in stereo now? You still have to set your audio book quality in your preference, 1 through 4 and Enhanced. I personally prefer 4 as it is vey good yet the files are much smaller than with enhanced. I know you can cancel your membership and sign up again and you can also sign up with multiple emails so you get your first free book, but I personally don't want to have to manage multiple Audible accounts and I use it constantly so this is not for me. I haven't looked at the membership options so until now I wasn't aware that you could prepay the Gold or Platinum membership for the year and save a bit of money. When you mentioned you bought 12 credits I thought it was some other promotion or deal and not just the prepaid Gold membership. I will definitely switch to a prepaid annual membership as well, but right now I have 12 books in my library I haven't read yet from their last big $4.95 sale, so once I need more books I'll go ahead and buy the 24 credits. Re: Buying books from Audible.
I really like the Audible memberships too. I am on the platnum monthly, which is enough for me. Paying $22.95 monthly is more economical than paying $200+ annually. Besides, if I got 12 or 24 credits all at once, then I would likely burn through them quickly and then be forced to pay another $200 or wait 6 or 12 months for the next batch of credits. I can't afford to pay $200 each time I want 12 credits, even if it is a good deal. Guess that's why they have different options for different folks. The other part of this is I have many books on my phone that I bought from Audible, started or haven't started, and are just sitting there now. Audible is great about offering frequent sales, buy 3 credits for $34, or other promotions. I saw one several months ago where you could get 2 books for the price of 1, which was a great deal. The books came from a selection of about 100 books, but still. Hello Sieghard Before, when I first bought the Audible App, it didn't matter what quality the files were be it enhanced or standard, the books were played in mono. This was very noticable when you downloaded a drama and all you got mono recordings. I don't know if you like the Trials ofDoctor Crippin or any other trial in that series, but I called customer care and asked them to get the files in stereo. So now we have everything in stereo. As for signing up again and again, you use the same e-mail address as many times as you like a long with the same password. Kawal. Not sure what you mean. You can use all of your credits at once if you wish. It's a very flexible plan. Credits are applied each time you purchase a book. Starting to stray from iOS - Was Re: Buying books from Audible.
Just a friendly reminder that the Audible topic, while interesting, is straying from iOS discussions. It's ok to talk about the Audible app and how to transfer audible content to and from your iOS device, but it's off topic to keep going on about their pricing plans, what's good and not good, what's better and what's not. Many thanks. -- Raul A. Re: Buying books from Audible.
Yes, Hank, you can get all the 24 credits at once, and you can renew prior to the end of your year if you run out. And of course, you can add to your credits via the periodic special sales on 3 credits, like they just had.
