Greg Watcher had said he uses it everyday and it is accessible.
I believe it requires at least an iPhone 7 because of the sensor requirements.

I checked on this for my wife and was told you can only get it covered if you
check 4 times a day and inject 3 times a day.

It may be that the provider knew my insurance and a different insurance company
might have different rules.

Two major CGM systems seem popular these days:

https://www.freestylelibre.us/cgm-difference/cgm-reinvented.html 14 day
lifespan

https://www.dexcom.com/g6-cgm-system 10 day lifespan

Some insurance plans cover one rather than the other. I have the dexcom,
overall it works well. However, I find it helpful to shave the insertion site,
add extra adhesive and apply a patch-like add-on at insertion time to get it to
stick well. I would think that difficult to do without some sighted assistance.
VoiceOver seems to work with the app in my limited testing.

Hello,
No you do not need the meter to read the freestyle libra sensors. All you need
is the freestyle libra link app on your iPhone. It will read the sensor just
fine. The app is very useable.

Re: Diabetic app question

2019-02-20 Thread Larry Smith
Hi. I have been using the 14 day free style libre system for about 3 months
now. I can tell you that the iPhone app is very accessible. You do not need the
reader at all.! I did not purchase the reader because it is not useful for
blind users. I am in the review stage for my insurance provider trying to get
them to pay for it. Right now, I pay $74.99 for 2 kits, 28 days. You do not
need sighted assistance to apply the sensor, activate it, or scan using your
iPhone, (check your glucose). If you turn on text-to-speech within the app, the
scanned results are automatically read aloud. You can also swipe to read the
scanned results.

No, the scanner is only necessary if you do not have an iPhone 7 or later. The
iPhone 7 and later have the NFC sensor built-in that can read the sensors in
the patches.

Re: Diabetic app question

2019-02-19 Thread Keith Bierman
Two major CGM systems seem popular these days:
https://www.freestylelibre.us/cgm-difference/cgm-reinvented.html 14 day
lifespan
https://www.dexcom.com/g6-cgm-system 10 day lifespan

Some insurance plans cover one rather than the other. I have the dexcom,
overall it works well. However, I find it helpful to shave the insertion
site, add extra adhesive and apply a patch-like add-on at insertion time to
get it to stick well. I would think that difficult to do without some
sighted assistance. VoiceOver seems to work with the app in my limited
testing.

I would like some clarification..It is my understanding that the Freestyle
Libre scanner/reader is needed. The scanner reads the blood glucose level from
the sensor & the result is transmitted to the iPhone app via bluetooth.
Hopefully, someone who uses the Freestyle Libre will chime in.

Re: Diabetic app question

2019-02-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Kathy,
This is referring I believe to the freestyle libre sensor. For Dora outlier did
a couple of podcasts. Generally, when your doctor prescribes it, they prescribe
the reader, which is useless to blind people, and the sensors. So what we need
is just the sensor, skip the reader. If insurance won’t pay for it, I
understand it’s about $75 a month and can be used very accurately with the
iPhone. Apparently you can also inject the sensor if that’s the right word,
every 14 days without sided assistance. I recently saw an article from the NFB
saying that thanks to their advocacy, Medicare will now cover this for the
blind. I do not know what is involved with making that happen. But if your
friend is blind, they might want to look into that.
