Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

I have the ID mate Galaxy reader. I love that thing!

I’m not sure about everyone else, but every time I try to use any bar code
reader on my i phone, I can never find the bar code. the ID mate makes it easy
because it’s multidirectional when it scans for a bar code, so you don’t have
to be that precise when looking for the bar code. for me, the database is
always current because I update when the updates come out twice a year. It’s
also easy to record your own codes and then up load them to the universal
database so they are included the next time an update comes out. I know the ID
mates are expensive compared to bar code reading apps on the i phone, but for
me, it was worth it.

JMO, of course

2018-05-14 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Richard,

I just sent in, don't know if it arrived, of a successful scan of a ottle
of wine. I, like you, find the Seeing Ai product channel very useful and it is
free!! The only things I have difficulty with are smallish tubes of cosmetic
creams. It finds the barcode easily, but can't seem to get a good enough
purchase, so, I get the fast beeps, but no result. I didn't know that if you
get the "not identified" message, it was worth trying again.

Something I noticed, when doing the wine, was that it works best with the
bottle upright and just rotate until you hear the beep. Most round containers
seem to need to be on their sides. I suppose it comes from wine had a life of
its own, and was not to be put on its side or shaken. Most modern wines
wouldn't notice if you put them in the spin-dryer!

I went over to my larder, intending to try the product reader on some jars,
as soon as I got near enough, phone in hand, not having decided which to try,
the app started beeping and reading whatever it saw, barcode-wise! I find it
excellent at spotting the smallest indication of a barcode. I do notice,
sometimes, once you get the fast beeps, but no "processing" message, it is
worth gently changing the angle of the phone, in a sort of circular movement,
it sometimes does the trick!

Sandy, waiting for happy hour!

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi, adding my 2 cents, I have the Galaxy device and it works great once you get
past the boot time which is my one biggest complaint. Even though they have
shortened the boot time considerably with its last firmware by 13 seconds, I
find it is still too long which causes me to use one of the IOS solutions like
seeing AI or KNFB reader. Having said that however, the Galaxy is more
accurate. It’s what I use if I have several items to scan.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-14 Thread Richard Turner
OK, to help those who have struggled with the Seeing AI app's Product
identification, I tested it on a can of LeCroix sparking water. There is no
label, so you cannot use the seam as a location hint for the bar code, but have
to just turn the can until the beeps begin.
I started with the iPhone about 18 inches from the can, and when the beeps
started, I slowly moved the can closer to the iPhone. When it got between 4 and
6 inches away, the product was identified. That took no more than 10 seconds
and I think less.
I then tried it on a carton of heavy cream.
The first try, came back with product not identified. So I tried again and made
sure the side of the carton where the beeps had happened was straight on and it
worked. Again, I started about 18 inches away until the beeps started.
After the identification was made, I flicked right to the more info button and
double tapped, and got this result:
Darigold Whipping Cream Classic 36%, Heavy

Keep product refrigerated. For best quality, use within fifteen days after
opening. Especially for sauces and whipping. Farmer owned. Your local dairy.
Since 1918. This milk comes from cows not treated with the growth hormone-rBST
(According to the FDA, no significant difference has been shown between milk
derived from rbST treated and non-rbST treated cows) . Ultra-pasteurized. Thank
you for choosing Darigold. What is ultra-pasteurization. Ultra-pasteurization
is a process similar to regular pasteurization that simply uses pressure,
higher heat, and a shorter period of time. The product is then packaged on
special very clean filling machines. The high heat process and clean packaging
environment significantly extend the freshness period for milk and other
products like heavy whipping cream. No chemicals or preservatives are added to
the product as part of the ultra-pasteurization process. This advanced
technology extends the shelf life to 60+ days (the shelf life for regular
pasteurization is 21 days). Once the carton is opened, it is best used within
fifteen days. Grade A. A gluten free product.

On frozen dinners, the more info button usually gets all the nutrition info
plus cooking instructions for both regular ovens and microwaves.
So, for me, the slightly slower time compared to an ID Mate is well worth it so
I can save my money for more important purchases.
Just my two cents worth,
Richard

I have an ID Mate Summit and upgraded to the ID Mate Galaxy. The Galaxy is
great and easy to use. I like the fact that the Galaxy can be updated by
Wi-Fi. My Galaxy scans quickly, even if I’m upside down. I think a stand

new, hardly used Summit on CraigsList.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Marie
I have used an ID Mate bar code scanner for almost ten years and while the
Seeing AI app is nice, it can not compare with the ID Mate. There is more info
available and the ability to record your own labels is fantastic.

Subject: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone has an I.D. Mate bar code reader and what their
thoughts are as far as having a standalone device as opposed to using an app on
their iPhone or some other bar code scanning app like SeeingAI?

Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I belong
to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately, the app more
or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does? That or is the
singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed for is that much
more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar code scanning
device may be worth having? Also, for the record, I am completely blind so any
features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may have to assist folks with low
vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some sort of plus for having the
device.

Would appreciate any input or observations.

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Penny Reeder
I have an ID Mate, and I have used the Seeing AI app for bar code
identification. While the Seeing AI app works quite well, I do love my
ID Mate and use it more often than the app. For one thing, one can
record extra information, including instructions which might not be
available from the app's web-based database, and I do use the
recording feature of the ID Mate whenever I have a product that is not
available from the commercial datrabase.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Cristobal, We have had an I D mate Omni for more than six years and really
enjoy using it. The database is updated twice per year and is quite
comprehensive.

Admittedly, we haven’t played that much with Seeing A I, however, it has been
our experience that it is far easier to locate the bar code with the Omni than
with the Seeing A I barcode channel.  The issue for us is not recognition;
rather, it is locating the barcode.

I do not have the ID Mate, but it stands to reason that a device with a
deducated function will work better than an add on to a device with many
functions, and, of course, you get what you pay for. The question you need to
ask yourself is would it be worth $1000 to you to be able to perform this
function.

I do not have the ID Mate, but it stands to reason that a device with a
deducated function will work better than an add on to a device with many
functions, and, of course, you get what you pay for. The question you need to
ask yourself is would it be worth $1000 to you to be able to perform this
function.

Seeing AI is better because it beeps when you're in the proximity of the
barcode. The ID Mate, at least the one I had, gave no such indication, so it
took a lot longer to find the barcode.

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Cristóbal
He’s selling “new to excellent condition” the I.D. Mate Summit with 16gb
upgraded memory card Latest data base of products dated October 2017 Padded
carry case Genuine power adapter Sample bar codes for use on products that
don't currently have a bar code label. $140.

I asked him this same question and this is what I got back.

“The I.D. Mate bar code reader has a much larger scanning device and is a lot
more sensative to reading bar codes than a smart phone Ap.It also projects
out a blue target for those who have limited vision to assist in getting a bar
code scanned. From what I have heard from those who have both the I.D. mate
and the ap; they tell me the I.D. mate works much better and is far more
accurate.

But then it is also a matter of choice for what works best for each individual.”

This is why I mentioned that I’m completely blind as one of the features he
pointed out has to do with folks who have lo vision which would be irrelevant
to me.

He’s legitimate as far as what he’s selling since he’s always posting
accessibility stuff and computers without complaints from people. For less than
$150 I’m mildly interested, but again, if something like SeeingAI more or less
already does what the I.D. Mate does, then I’m probably going to pass. If it on
the other hand is faster than an app or is more forgiving as far as trying to
scan stuff without hassling with a package or can or whatever then maybe we’re
talking.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Mary Otten
Hi richard,
I have mostly found the barcode scanning feature of seeing AI frustrating. I
have occasionally had luck, especially in the beginning. But now it seems,
admittedly I am often trying it on cans or bottles, that I can get that really
fast beeping which indicates I’m on the barcode. And then it just keeps doing
that. If I move the phone closer or maybe even further away, eventually the
beating goes away, indicating I’ve lost it. But I don’t get that sweet spot
where it actually sees the thing and identifies it. Are used to have a scanner
that AT. guys sold. That connected to a PC and had that multi directional or
whatever they call it scanning like the idea makes do. I would love to have an
ID mate, but the price tag is absurd. Cannot justify it. I sure would like to
know what that last little step is to get from the fast beeps to actual paydirt.

RE: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi,

We have an I.D. Mate Quest, and I love it. I find it quicker and more reliable
at finding the barcode than most apps. I use it almost daily to identify
packages and hear the directions for cooking. Maybe I am just not as
proficient as some others at finding barcodes with the phone apps, including
Seeing AI, but I find that the I.D. Mate is a lot more forgiving as to how it
is positioned to find the barcode.

We also use the recording feature to label some things that it can't identify
by the barcode, such as meats we bring home from the meat store.

I hated mine. I think Seeing AI is a lot better at it.

Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I belong
to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately, the app more
or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does? That or is the
singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed for is that much
more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar code scanning
device may be worth h having? Also, for the record, I am completely blind so
any features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may have to assist folks with
low vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some sort of plus for having the
device.
Would appreciate any input or observations.
Thanks,
Cristóbal

Ok… May I ask what you hated about it? How is SeeingAI better for example?
