IN fact, if anyone really knew the history of Voice Dream they would know 
Winston wrote it originally for himself to learn iOS programming and to have 
something to read documents to him while he drove, ran, worked out, etc.

Then, he found out how useful it could be to people with Dyslexia and began 
focusing on that community and it became one of the most popular apps in the 
education field around the world.

Then came including VoiceOver users in the app.

 

And as I have said too many times, Winston was going to change to a 
subscription model anyway but wanted the app taken care of by a team rather 
than depending on just him, so he sold it to someone who could do just that.

What community are we talking about? OK, it's a rhetorical question because I 
know the blind/visually impaired community is being referred to. However, just 
because Voice Dream Reader is designed to work extremely well with Voiceover 
and has features for low vision users, it is not an app specifically made for 
blind/visually impaired users. In fact, going on the App Store and reading 
reviews, I didn't see a single review from a blind person. The app is also 
extremely useful to people with dyslexia and just anybody who wants an app 
which can read all sorts of files, books or articles to them as they are 
running, working out, driving or doing whatever. This discussion makes it sound 
like the new owners are traitors to the blind community or that they owe us 
something since they choose not  to be on the Viphone list or other Apple 
related lists. Just because Winston Chen decided to have a more hands-on 
approach, let's not demand every developer has to do this since in fact most of 
them don't. I don't think Amazon/Audible is subscribed to the Viphone list and 
neither is Microsoft or even Apple.

The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023.  Applause Group 
never said you would never have to pay.  They said you didn’t have to pay right 
away.

Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision.  

But, you are spreading false information.

Boycott it if you want and use something else, but do not give wrong 
information.

 

Could they have handled it differently, probably so.

 

And as I have said, more than once, Winston was going to have to do the exact 
same thing.

I just did a review of voice dream; gave it five stars. The title is: “voice 
dream – a dream come true”. 

I paid for the subscription, gladly. I understand that for some folks coming up 
with $60  all at once is a stretch; a monthly subscription would be good. A 
friend pointe out that it would have been better if they’d showed us one of 
their touted upgrades before asking us to pay. But I love the app; if they 
could get it integrated with Kindle that would be a game changer and I would 
love an AI voice.

Well, I know I did a review of five star one, quite some time ago. So maybe it 
got buried. I have an updated it. If these people are really starting to update 
with crap reviews, I suppose I’ll have to go do mine too. But I think it’s 
ridiculous this complaining and complaining. You were not promised a 
perpetually free app after you paid your 10 or whatever dollars it was. In 
fact, if anybody has a long enough memory, you might remember when Winston 
himself charged for a major upgrade. I don’t remember the circumstances, but I 
do definitely remember having to pay for a big upgrade. And I didn’t care. It 
was worth it. This might be worth it too. It certainly the best app out there 
if you’re a big book user.

Thanks Mary. In fact, when Winston started the app, I think the price was around $2.00. Then it went to $5, then 10, then 15, then 20, and the last price was $30 and. The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023.  Applause Group never said you would never have to pay.  They said you didn’t have to pay right away.
Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision. 

But, you are spreading false information.
Boycott it if you want and use something else, but do not give wrong information.
 
Could they have handled it differently, probably so.
 

And as I have said, more than once, Winston was going to have to do the exact same thing.

Well, I know I did a review of five star one, quite some time ago. So maybe it got buried. I have an updated it. If these people are really starting to update with crap reviews, I suppose I’ll have to go do mine too. But I think it’s ridiculous this complaining and complaining. You were not promised a perpetually free app after you paid your 10 or whatever dollars it was. In fact, if anybody has a long enough memory, you might remember when Winston himself charged for a major upgrade. I don’t remember the circumstances, but I do definitely remember having to pay for a big upgrade. And I didn’t care. It was worth it. This might be worth it too. IN fact, if anyone really knew the history of Voice Dream they would know 
Winston wrote it originally for himself to learn iOS programming and to have 
something to read documents to him while he drove, ran, worked out, etc.

Then, he found out how useful it could be to people with Dyslexia and began 
focusing on that community and it became one of the most popular apps in the 
education field around the world.

You suggest none of us give them a dime, I suggest everybody does what they 
feel is best for them and let's stop bad mouthing them because you don't agree 
with their business decision which is entirely theirs to make. This is getting 
old and it's a repeat of the same issue when some app developer who started out 
with a free app realized they had to charge something since free wasn't paying 
their bills. It's one thing for a company like Microsoft to offer Seeing AI for 
free, it's another thing for an app developer or maybe a small group of 
developers who joined together and want to make a living from what they do to 
offer their work for free. I remember the outrage when years ago the Flexy 
keyboard became a paid app and there are other examples, there are also some 
examples where an app was a paid app at first and then it became a free app and 
of course people who initially paid a few bucks were then mad because they 
could now get it for free. The important lesson is that none of these apps are 
around any more and if people want quality apps which they use daily to 
continue and to not just get a few bug fixes but also new features, then they 
have to pay something for them. How often has this come over the years 
regarding Jaws and their SMA cost every two years or more recently the annual 
subscription model. Strangely nobody complains about the monthly or annual 
subscription costs of Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV, Apple Music, Spotify and 
on and on. From what I read the new owner of Voice Dream Reader has released 
updates with new features, voices are now included, OneDrive support was added 
and they say there are plans to add Kindle support which I think for many would 
be a very big deal and just because they maybe haven't joined every iPhone list 
where they engage directly with our community does not mean they are a " crappy 
corporation" who only cares about money. I own a retail store and it's an 
incorporated business and I definitely care about making money because that is 
my job, but that does not mean I don't care about my customers and providing 
them with good service and about my community where I donate thousands of 
Dollars each year to all sorts of organisations, events and fund raisers. The 
vague statement about the "crappy corporation and money is all they care 
about." Indicates that you probably don't know anything at all about the 
individuals behind the company and why they decided to buy Voice Dream Reader, 
yes, I say buy because while I also don't know for sure, I am pretty certain 
Winston Chen didn't just give it to them after years of work because he is such 
a nice guy. I also read another post where it was stated the developer doesn't 
care or engage with our community. Let's not forget that this is not strictly 
an app for the blind, but it's also for people with dyslexia and just regular 
sighted people who want an app which can read books, PDF's, web articles etc. 
It says in the app description that it is " Optimized for VoiceOver, Braille 
and switch control" and has " High contrast and large font size for low vision 
readers.", but that is only part of its many features.
Just move on, buy the subscription and enjoy the app if you want to don't and 
shut up if you don't; anything else people say about has been said already.

I agree with you completely Dennis. This is why I feel the way I do about the subscription. This company does not engage with us as a community at all and all they want is money. I doubt very much that the  creators of the app in question monitor this list 
so all we are doing is arguing amongst ourselves.

It is well worth noting that software is often licensed and not sold.  I have 
an Apple Music subscription and as long as that is active I can play any music 
in their catalogue.  They may increase the price of the subscription at any 
time.  If I choose to terminate my subscription I am no longer able to play 
their music even if it has been downloaded to my device.

Apps have changed to a subscription model before or added in app purchases so 
this is nothing new or unscrupulous.

Pay your money and make your choice.  No one is holding you to ransom.

So lets say they at least did a poor job of explaining what was to come.  My 
issue is should we trust them that we will pay the $60 a year?  Are we really 
locked into that price as their blog post states?  Or if it goes up to $150 
next year is it 25% off that $150?  This is what happens when you promise the 
community one thing and do another.  Had they said “we are not changing things 
for current users at this time but that may change down the road they would be 
protected and I would not have any leg to stand on.  It was how they did this.  
Not everyone got emails.  I know I didn’t.

The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023.  Applause Group 
never said you would never have to pay.  They said you didn’t have to pay right 
away.

Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision.  

But, you are spreading false information.
