I'm not following. How does the privacy model of one company or the
other affect their virtual digital assistant and their voice
recognition, ability to launch apps and interact with your personal
information? I'm not saying there's no impact, and it's probably just my
lack of imagination, but I'm not seeing the relationship, so I'm
wondering what I'm missing. I'm interested and curious to learn more here.

wants to buy it from Google or Google using it for their own purposes,
which are all about advertising. We need a happy medium here we're

what all these new hires will do for Apple

My sighted wife wasn't much of a SIRI user, but she just got a new car

This is an actually the Google assistant. It is the Google app that comes
standard on most android devices that are not the latest and greatest. Although
Google assistant is rolling out to more devices now, I still don't have it, so
I'm still using regular Google. One other thing that Google does and also
Google assistant is put ads on the screen that comes up after you've asked for
something. That is also annoying. I hope Apple never does this and I doubt they
will.

people must do it.
I just think Apple is typical Apple here, they do things in their own way and
time and don’t really care what people say. Look how long it took them to
announce a speaker, now they have and they are not trying to make it sound like
it goes right up against the Echo or Google Home, but they position it as an
audio file speaker which is also smart and once they do in fact make SIRI a lot
smarter which they will in their own time it will become more popular.
Voice interface is definitely the up and coming thing and everybody does it and
in time even people who currently may not use it will do so in a few years.

Hi Sieghard,
I have been thinking about what you have been saying about Siri. I know I agree
with you that I wish Apple would make it do more. But I am wondering in the
scheme of things I wonder how many sighted people use Siri like the visually
impaired do. I know my wife does not use Siri and I cannot think of one sighted
person I know ever use it. So I am thinking Apple does not improve Siri just
for the blind and they don’t get much input from the sighted users, so that is
why I am thinking they don’t improve it. Just my thought on this.

You know, one of the very simplest things that Siri always gets right is
opening an app when I Hasket too. Google doesn't. More often than not on my
android device, when I ask Google to open an app I get a stupid screen I have
to then tap on the instructions it says open this app. Google is really smart
about a lot of things, so why can't it yet opening apps right?

I suspect that Apple's very private Siri will improve a lot when they manage to
put a lot of Siri's language recognition on a chip integrated into our iPhones.
I do hear that work is underway on this. But tediously underperforming

Re: New siri voices in IOS 11

2017-06-18 Thread Mary Otten
Some of the problems with Siri have to do with privacy, and apples insistence
on it, where as Google is quite the opposite. So there are some trade-offs
here. I do also wish that Siri would become better, but not at the expense of
my data going to any Tom Dick and Harry who wants to buy it from Google or
Google using it for their own purposes, which are all about advertising. We
need a happy medium here we're privacy is first, but robust AI is also
possible. I'm hoping that's what all these new hires will do for Apple

2017-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I know that they are reporting this just as they are reporting how Apple has
and is hiring experts in autonomous/self-driving car technology. As far as SIRI
goes, however, I want them to show that they are making some progress, it just
seem sso ignorant that they are just not really improving SIRI but they of
course know that is what everybody wants.

I’m surprised to see so much attention devoted towards the more expressive Siri
voices. I view it as a nice touch to the presnetaiton layer, but the structure
and interaction, specifically with understanding, context, and meaningful
intelligence has a lot to be desired. The only advantage Siri has is that it
was first, but all other voice-based assistants are smarter, helpful, and
useful. However, to be fair, even the best of the “Assistants” today would not
last as a human Assistant in a job. We’ve been promised a bright future with
the voice user interfaces, but a lot more resources and time needs to be

those can't be discussed.

RE: New siri voices in IOS 11

2017-06-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
They very publically said during the keynote that there is both a new american
male and female voice and they played them. Especially the new female voice
sounds very good and I would be very surprised if it would not be available for
Voiceover. SIRI voices have been available in iOS 9 and iOS 10 (maybe even iOS
8, can't remember if that is when it started) and I doubt they suddenly decide
to not make them available as Voiceover voices any more.

Sieghard

Re: New siri voices in IOS 11

2017-06-13 Thread Jenifer Barr
Hi Ming.
Even if this is true people beta testing IOS 11 cannot discuss. I am not one of
them that's why I'm replying.
Have a great day.
Jen
