RE: Square card reader
Hello Fellow square users or attempted users. At the NFB convention I spoke with someone who is using Square with a splitter. It appears that what you need is a 4 pin splitter which in effect separates’ the microphone and headphone circuits in the iPhone headphone jack such that you can use a headphone and a separate microphone rather than one with the single jack. Well, I got one of these from Radio Shack for about $5.00 and it appears to get me a bit further down the road to working. I get audio through the headset jack and plug my card reader into the other jack. The software gets to the enter credit card number or swipe screen but no matter what I do the card won’t register when I swipe it. I do occasionally get a card not charged message and if I unplug the reader the message reader disconnected comes up indicating that it knew the reader was there. Can anyone tell me what the secret is to swiping a card? Is there something I’m not getting? I should also say that I tried swiping the card with just the reader plugged directly into the iPhone and then removing it to get audio back to see if maybe the reader really isn’t connected correctly through the splitter but it still doesn’t work. I should also say that I know this reader can work as the guy that cuts my lawn has borrowed it on occasion to use on his own iPhone. Any suggestions? RE: Square card reader
While I've been able to use the reader withbluetooth headphones once or twice in the past, I haven't been successful for some time now. I do the same thing as suggested below. I plug the unit in, swipe, and then unplug the unit to check the results. This works fine for me at this time allthough I really hope that Square finds a way to make it work with bluetooth at least. I found that the easiest way to handle it was to plug it in to swipe, then unplug it to get speech back. I'd love to know if anyone has been successful with a splitter or with Bluetooth. I found that they did not work for me. On Friday, April 18, 2014 6:31:48 AM UTC-4, Lois B wrote: I did some expensive experimenting yesterday to see how the square reader worked with blue tooth, etc. Bluetooth headphones do not work with the card reader plugged in, even if you turn it off and back on after plugging in the reader. The splitter also did not work with regular headphones even though the splitter would work if only the reader was plugged in. Maybe, it is some sort of security feature that is built in. The only way to use the reader is to plug it in to swipe the card, then take it out again to sign and finish the transaction. The Bluetooth comes back when you take the reader out, likewise the wired headphones. If you have silence when you unplug the reader, you will know that the swipe was successful and you are at the signature screen. After signing, you wait until you hear it was successful. Before that, there is no speech. I will get used to it eventually. So, it does work, just has a few quirks. RE: Square Card Reader
If you plug in the Square Card Reader and then turn on your Bluetooth headset sound should come through the headset. This works with any wired headset so it should also work with anything else you plug into the headset. For example, if you listen with a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker and plug in a wired headset, then the sound switches to the wired headset. However, if you turn off your Bluetooth headset or speaker while the wired headset is plugged in and then turn it on again, sound switches back to the Bluetooth device. RE: Square Card Reader, Does it work with VoiceOver?
Penny, When I use the reader, I manually enter the amount of the transaction before plugging the reader into the headphone jack. After plugging the reader in, I swipe the card, sometimes 2 or 3 times to be sure I get a successful read. I then unplug the reader. If the card was read, I will find myself in the screen where the person paying is supposed to sign. If I am still in the amount screen I Plug the reader in and try another swipe. The only time the reader has to be connected to the device is when you are actually ready to swipe the card. Also, you may want to wait about 5 seconds or so after swiping the card before disconnecting the reader just in case it takes a few seconds to complete all transfer of information between the reader and the device. I hope I explained this clearly enough. Re: Square Card reader
It's true the square reader plugs into the headphone jack. i'd think for fast connectivity hardline would be easiest, because he or she could leave the splitter attached to square, and then just plug in really quickly if they wanted. Bluetooth works just as well from what I've read. Any decent headphone splitter would work, Dynex, monster, that kind of thing. Re: Square Card Reader
Hi Jenine, Unfortunately you will most likely discover that your bluetooth headset will not work if you plug something into the headphone jack. I didn't want to give you wrong information, so I just turned on Bluetooth and then I turned on my Bluetooth headset. It took over as usual and both VoiceOver and anything else (music, audio books etc.) played on my bluetooth headset. I then plugged in my Apple wired headset and any audio was immediately routed to it, it said in the Bluetooth settings that my bluetooth headset was connected, but there was no output. As soon as I unplugged the wired headset audio was back on Bluetooth. Unless that card reader has some sort of headphone jack on it so that you connect it to the headphone jack and then a headset to it I think you will be out of luck. I tried out one of those IR dongles last year which in connection with an app turn your IOS device into a universal remote and here I found a company which made a dongle that plugs into the 30-Pin connector, others exist which also use the headphone jack. I am surprised there are no credit card readers which use the 30-Pin connector. Good luck, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Square Card Reader
Hi, ah yes the signature. If the transaction is 25.00 or less, no signature is required. If it's more, then it is. However if you are taking a payment over the phone or making a manual transaction where the person isn't there for whatever reason, then you have to write down phone order or phone auth. You have to turn off voice over in order to do this and it works fine. My wife and I play with this a little where she paid me for some fake services just to see how well the manual option would work out. The minimum payment you can take is $1. Thanks. -- Raul A. Re: Square Card Reader
The problem I gather is that when you plug the device in you loose speech because it connects to the earphone port. Using Braille however would probably not pose a problem. I do not have one so cannot test it out. On Apr 27, 2012, at 7:01 PM, Jenine Stanley wrote: Anyone out there using the Square Card Reader app and device to take credit card payments? RE: Square Card Reader
I'm assuming if you use a Bluetooth headset then you don't lose speech but will have to test that one with my crappy Bluetooth headsets. grin -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: Friday, April 27, 2012 7:04 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Square Card Reader The problem I gather is that when you plug the device in you loose speech because it connects to the earphone port.
