Make sure that you have blue tooth turned on when using these GPS apps. You will not get good results with blue tooth off. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Hello, I'm not Siegherd, but I do use My Way Lite. From what I can recall, My Way Classic one is able to share information to others. Otherwise, there's really no difference. Hence, I decided that I didn't need that feature. My Way Classic at the time was $14.99 to purchase. The ability to set bread crumbs and create a route has been extremely beneficial for me, especially in situations that the qraditional GPS apps will not give me the independence necessary. HTH. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Do you mean wifi? I know GPS accuracy is improved when wifi is enabled and your phone can look for near by hot spots. I've never heard this about bluetooth though, and I'd be surprised if it were the case given how bluetooth works. BTW, I agree you'll get better results with wifi enabled, but you should still get good results without it. I love Ariadne GPS for this task. You can add any place as a point of interest and then Ariadne will tell you the distance and direction to that point of interest. If your route is complex, you can always add additional POIs along your route to remind you where to turn. You can also add POIs to Blind Square but it’s a bit more complicated. Also, since Ariadne does not use any maps, it doesn’t matter if you have a data or network connection. It does sometimes happen that where you live is not very good for GPS but hopefully, if you've added points to find, you'll do better. I struggle too, so you're not alone, but keep trying! Yes, I keep trying it, 200yards and past two other junctions and it still thought I was at the previous one. It mentioned relative house numbers a few times, and still missed I'd taken a turn, good job I was on familiar territory! This wasn't even that built up an area. It missed announcing another junction, which I took anyway; then declaired a house number that doesn't exist as a close tends to be too short for 3 digit numbers. I never fail to be amazed at the difference between those that rate it and rave about it, and my direct experience which usually leads me to abandon it again as next to useless. It's your choice, there's still no real substitute for a real sense of direction and awareness. In my experience, regardless of the app, GPS indoors simply isn't worth bothering with unless you're in a very large area like a shopping centre or an airport. I suggest that instead of trying (and most likely failing) to find an app, you spend time getting to grips with your new complex instead. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
I love Ariadne GPS for this task. You can add any place as a point of interest and then Ariadne will tell you the distance and direction to that point of interest. If your route is complex, you can always add additional POIs along your route to remind you where to turn. You can also add POIs to Blind Square but it’s a bit more complicated. Also, since Ariadne does not use any maps, it doesn’t matter if you have a data or network connection. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Hi, To confirm, I did assume that the OP was talking about an indoor type complex not a larger, outdoor one. The indoor type is much more common in the UK hence my assumption although AFAIK the OP is abroad. Baring this in mind: if you live in a large outdoor complex then yes, you will have some options as per the other messages in this topic. However, if it's all indoors I still maintain that GPS will be next to useless. Cheers, Ben. On BlindSquare, you can add a place (landmark) by going to the location and going in the places category. There you will find a add button. You can then name it. I am, yes it does; though it ate battery like it was going out of fashion this afternoon, 20 minutes is not really any good for getting about with, but liked it when it worked before that. - Original Message - From: Andrew Lamanche ioani...@me.com To: VIPhone viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, November 16, 2014 6:48 PM Subject: Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex? Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Ok, should try that again sometime if not too dear. But Ariadne, battery useage aside, did know I was walking along the canal and named it, the first to do that. It was telling me streets and house numbers that were close to the water, too. I keep trying to find one of these apps best for me and how to carry the phone to make best use of it. I need it close as hearing is poor, not very good with any kind of earphone. Just had a leathery pouch on a cord; so put phone in head first so speaker end just stuck out the top; but I think the upside down confused it. I wanted something like a shoulder holster to put phone in instead of pockets. Ariadne can still point you at your destination giving clockface direction, or compass if you like, and distence. I reckon given a lake and a few reference points around it, one could probably sail quite freely and find the peir again afterwards. - Original Message - From: Andy Baracco w...@socal.rr.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, November 16, 2014 7:01 PM Subject: Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex? Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Hi, Could you give an example of when GPS has been able to provide any meaningful feedback for navigating around a building and roughly how big it is? Cheers, Ben. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
With respect, no one said, he didn't say it was an enclosed building flat or appt complex. I know somebody over there in one of these open complexes spread over acres of former agricultural land; so GPS could work in those. She has to take a hike to the managers office, mailboxes, laundry facility and so on. she's at ground level with real grass outside her door. The nearest store is in the nearest town which is a few miles, no bus, no sidewalk, and ratrun of a road with only ditches along the side. Very different to highrise cityscape. Good as it might sound, it's like one step short of house arrest; unless you have friends with cars, or can afford cabs. That is mostly an aside, but open plan can take gps, though still a moot point how much use it would ultimately be. Like you say, learn it the conventional way, pays divvi's in the end. - Original Message - From: Ben Mustill-Rose b...@benmr.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2014 2:40 PM Subject: Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex? Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Sure. As blindsquare is a look around application, if you are able to walk down a path, the application will give you clock direction. You will then use that to find the place that you have marked. For example, one of my clients was looking for a landmark. She went ahead and added a place. She was able to walk down the sidewalk through buildings and find that landmark. Some bill were two and three stories which was no problem. The application also has a accuracy meter, you will see that it can vary slightly , But it can sure get you to your landmark. Just don't forget that the application is a tool you must know mobility in order to have success. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Some apartment complexes are the size of a small city. I do know blind persons who have problems navigating in their apartment complex, and perhaps having the ability to mark certain locations with a GPS system could be helpful, but keep in mind that accuracy is not pinpoint, and can be as much as 40 feet off. Hi! And of course when marking something like a Mailbox or even your front door you can set how far away BlindSquare lets you know [this is independent of your main setting!] So you can have your main setting quite high to hear shops or Pubs and when you get really close to your Mailbox then it will let you know!
Yes, It was created for the blind in Switzerland I believe but the app is in English. I also have BlindSquare and like both of them. MyWay you can use on trails, shortcuts around your apartment complex. When I got home with my guide dog it made it easier to train her around here.
Hello, I was going to suggest My Way Lite, but someone beat me to the punch. The other app that is quite accessible is seeing Assistant Move. I haven't use it much, but I know that you can set bread crumbs and record markers with GPS coordinates. You can use voice commands to access the app itself. Once I have more time to look at the recording of a route, I'll be able to comment on it. This is one feature that the Seeing Eye Sendero app didn't migrate over from the note taker (to create a manual route). No matter how good one is as a blind traveller, until one can make a visual memory of all the important landmarks, these type of apps will be invaluable. JMO. Re: gps app to help find stuff around a apartment complex?
Remember, it only works well outdoors and it can still be ten yards off even on a good day. Otherwise, use all those apps mentioned so far. In fact, I reckon Ariadne would be good for this, as you mark a place when you find it once, add it as a favourite, then set your device to point you at it when you need to find it again. It gives distence and direction on a clock face principle. Make sure your front door at home is the first favourite.
