I would say the speaker is certainly better than the 3rd generation touch. It has more treble in it than the iPhone 4S. The 4S has a fuller sound and will handle a bit more volume without starting to distort. I personally would have no trouble listening to books or even music over the speaker, though music will be far more enjoyable over headphones or external speakers. I too am surprised and disappointed that they did not include ear phones with the button on the cord. It seems incredibly cheap on Apple's part to not include that. They took the step of adding Siri, but you are not given the option out of the box to access Siri from the headset. And, as always with the touch, they don't include a wall charger. I will say, the earbuds do sound better than the old ones. I also have my Bose with the in-line mic and controls, but I don't always want to use them. The other thing that will take some getting used to is how much thinner and longer it is than the 3rd gen. It is a good half inch taller and since it has a thinner frame, it seems narrower, but the screen area is the same width. I did a restore from my backup and everything appeared pretty much the same as on my 3rd gen except for the extra new apps like FaceTime and Passbook and camera. RE: iPod Touch fifth generation problem
Rose, it isn't just the microphone, but also the button to control playback of audio. As others have already pointed out though, having the microphone on the cord makes it easier to access Siri and do some recording when perhaps you don't want to have the sound of your hand moving on the device when recording, not to mention all the other things already said. I was commenting on the quality of the voice more than I was the volume. I do not know if the volume is louder because I never had a problem hearing the fourth gen and I don't have a problem hearing the fifth-generation either. Until now, the consensus was that the pod5 did have a better louder sound output; but yes, I suddenly switched to drooling over or lusting after the iPad mini. Hummmnmnmnm,... Ok, slight exadgeration, but will be there Friday and have to make final decision by then. RE: iPod Touch fifth generation problem
Mary and all, My 5th gen touch came a day early, very nice surprise. The fact that we can now put 16 apps in each folder is very nice. Richard what does VoiceOver sound like on the new touch since you are hearing more treble? Does it sound tinny for example. Thanks! Tinny is is the ear of the beholder. It is more tinny than the 4s, but less tinny than the 3rd gen touch. But, I'm happy with the default U.S. voice where a lot of people I know can't stand it and use the Australian voice instead. So, it is hard to quantify such a subjective thing as how voices sound. So the 5th gen doesn't sound louder when using VoiceOver than on the 4th gen? I find that VoiceOver on the 4th gen is very low and definitly hard to hear. RE: iPod Touch fifth generation problem
This is only a guess, as my 5th generation touch won't be here until Tuesday, but did you try rebooting the computer while the touch is plugged in to see if it recognizes it when it comes back up? Then, when you open iTunes, are you planning to set it up as a new device, or restore it from a backup? I was planning on calling Apple when I get mine and having them talk me through the steps, if things don't work as I think they might. This will be the first time I have changed devices on this computer. Richard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Donald L. Re: iPod Touch fifth generation problem
Thanks, Richard, for your prompt response. What I had planned to do was to just put all the apps which I had purchased for my 3-GS on the new iPod. In answer to your question, rebooting the PC with the iPod plugged in yielded the same result. Sure hope that I do not have a defective iPod. Re: iPod Touch fifth generation problem
Richard, When you get that 5th gen Touch, please let us know what you think of the speaker as compared with the speaker on your present model. I think you and I may have the same, 3rd gen touch. I'm hoping that the speaker is a little improved on this new one but haven't made it to the Mac store to check that out. I'm kind of waiting on the iPad mini announcement to see what it offers versus the new Touch, and one of the things that would really make me look hard at the Touch would be if the speaker were more or less on par with the one in the 4S. I suppose that's a small thing, but for me, that 3rd gen Touch speaker got to be a real drag. Sure there is airplay and there are docks. But sometimes it is just nice to have the device by itself. No I agree. Please let us know on the speakers. I have heard it's going to sound like the iPhone, but only you or other users can really tell us. I am hearing impaired so it's either that or the iPad Mini, not both. Hi all, I'm waffling between an iPhone 5 and the new gen iPod. Can you chime in on the pros and cons of each, other than the obvious calling capability of the iPhone? I'm having to wait til February for my phone upgrade: can I get the iPod now and not have to worry about the upgrade issue? Simple qquestions, I know, but I've never had an iPhone and wonder if the iPod might give me the same capabilities. Thanks. Yes, I'm hoping the speaker will be better than the 3rd gen. I will certainly let you all know Tuesday evening assuming the shipment time is correct. I hope it is better than the 4th generation too. I was really disappointed when I received my iPod 4th gen as the sound without using headphones is horrible. -Original Message- From: Richard Turner Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2012 8:08 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: iPod Touch fifth generation problem Yes, I'm hoping the speaker will be better than the 3rd gen.
