Re: upgrading from 4s

2015-12-02 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Chris,

I apologize for my lack of clarity. Perhaps I should have said mobile
computing becomes obsolete in six months of it's release?

I agree that desktop computers are virtually at a stand still, as well as
pushing processors to their limits with over-clocking and the like, but
having said that, I don't think that the mobile technology market has
changed in the last 15 to 20 years in terms of it's advancement, or should I
say, the speed in which the technology changes has remained at the same pace
for a while now, and the same goes with Laptops and touch screen devices
being moved into the mainstream.

In any case, I can't explain why, then, that my 4S is so slow to do
anything.

When I compare it to my 6S, it's practically a dog's age before I can get
anything to happen on it.

I think it started with iOS 8.0, but don't quote me on that.

I've checked the background apps that are running, minimized any extraneous
processes, and the difference is negligible. I do have to say that the
battery life has greatly improved with iOS 9 since it introduced "Low Power
Mode", but again, that doesn't help me in my quest to accomplish tasks
faster. Smiles.

The pace of advancement in computers has slowed down. It isn't true that
a computer is obsolete in six months any more. That being said, the
reason advancements in computers has slowed down is because the effort
has moved to mobile devices. So what you say is still true for mobile
devices.

It's also a fallacy that newer operating systems mean older devices will
run slower. This is true when new features are added and enough
attention isn't paid to performance, but IOS 9 is a good example where
this doesn't need to be the case. IOS 9 has breathed life into older
devices such as the iPhone 4S. I've been using an iPhone 4S since it
came out, and I never found that things took forever, but it did get a
boost in performance when IOS 9 was released. That doesn't mean it isn't
going to suffer when compared to a newer phone.

one year-old.

The younger computer has newer technology, and can therefore handle the
demands of the computer more easily than the older two year-old system.

You might also have to think that the more advanced operating system
will have greater demands put on the device.

So, when I first got my iPhone 4S, it was running iOS 6.0, and was
running much better than my older iPhone 3GS, but as more and more iOS
updates came along, the slower and more lagging my devices became to the
point that doing anything on my iPhone 4S takes forever.

When I use my new iPhone 6S, the speed can't even compare to the older

I wouldn't say significantly better, but that depends on how you define
significantly. It will be supported longer, it does have better specs so
it will perform a bit better, it has a larger screen and a longer
battery life. I'd suggest checking out the specs and reviews on line.
From an accessibility stand point, it's a wash, so you're making the

Don't get me wrong, an iPhone 4S is going to be pretty frustratingly
slow when compared to an iPhone 6. A newer phone with a faster processor
is going to out perform a 4S. I've used an iPhone 4S from IOS 5 up
through IOS 9 though, and except for those first releases of IOS 8, it
didn't get appreciably slower with each release of IOS, and in fact,
performance did improve with IOS 9. My employer got me an iPhone 5, and
it's noticeably faster than my iPhone 4S, but not so much that it makes
the 4S unusable for me.

If you're talking about my iPhone 4S, I wouldn't say it was very

running much better than my older iPhone 3GS, but as more and more iOS
updates came along, the slower and more lagging my devices became to
the point that doing anything on my iPhone 4S takes forever.

When I use my new iPhone 6S, the speed can't even compare to the older
3GS, or the 4S.

Good luck in what ever you choose to do.

I wouldn't say significantly better, but that depends on how you
define significantly. It will be supported longer, it does have better
specs so it will perform a bit better, it has a larger screen and a
longer battery life. I'd suggest checking out the specs and reviews on line.
From an accessibility stand point, it's a wash, so you're making the
same decision any iPhone user would, blind or sighted.

Let's hope this second-hand 4s can get maybe at least minimum a year and a half
use! I want to get the most out of it! Here in Mexico going for the most recent
IPhone model is expensive! And if I can, I wouldn't wamt to have to go back to
ny Motoroloa G 2nd! But that's for another forum! Anyway, I'm hoping to get the
most out of this 4s as possible!

I suspect it won't be supported after IOS 9, but only time and announcements

Didn't Apple Retire its Apple iPhone4S LastYear (September2014? But

Personally, I think Apple allowed the iPhone4S to Receive iOS9
PrimarilyBecause it wasn't SlatedTo Contain many Bells, it
was regarded as a SecurityUpDate to SmoothOut the Bugs that
were AssociatedWith its previous iOSUpDate (Referrin'To iOS8)

Did Apple announce the Retirement of its Apple iPhone5 either IN
June2015 OR September2015?If not, it will probably Receive iOS10

The pace of advancement in computers has slowed down. It isn't true
that a computer is obsolete in six months any more. That being
said, the reason advancements in computers has slowed down is
because the effort has moved to mobile devices. So what you say is
still true for mobile devices.

It's also a fallacy that newer operating systems mean older devices
will run slower. This is true when new features are added and
enough attention isn't paid to performance, but IOS 9 is a good
example where this doesn't need to be the case. IOS 9 has breathed
life into older devices such as the iPhone 4S. I've been using an
iPhone 4S since it came out, and I never found that things took
forever, but it did get a boost in performance when IOS 9 was
released. That doesn't mean it isn't going to suffer when compared
to a newer phone.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, especially given the phenomenon of apps
getting bigger lately. I have a 16 gig 4S right now, and I'm constantly
deleting and re-downloading things to make room for Audible or BARD books. I
can't wait to get either the 64 gig or 128 gig 6S.

Re: upgrading from 4s

2015-11-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain

It's the same as buying a computer.

Remember that technology becomes obsolete within six months of it's
release, so, if you think of it in terms of a computer, it would be the
same as buying a two year-old computer, versus a computer that's only
one year-old.

3GS, or the 4S.

Good luck in what ever you choose to do.

I wouldn't say significantly better, but that depends on how you define
significantly. It will be supported longer, it does have better specs so
it will perform a bit better, it has a larger screen and a longer
battery life. I'd suggest checking out the specs and reviews on line.
From an accessibility stand point, it's a wash, so you're making the
same decision any iPhone user would, blind or sighted.

I don't know, but think that by the end of this year people are going to have
to think seriously about upgrading. For me, I am glad I have made the move,
because my for S was getting a little slow and sluggish with speech. I don't
think it would be quite so bad for those who do not need voice-over. Anyway,
that's just a guess!

Re: upgrading from 4s

2015-11-29 Thread Alex Stone
Yes it is, if you want more information I'm more than happy to discuss
with you off list. My first iPhone was a four and my second a 5s, which
to be honest was ten times better, I also moved from an 8gb 4 to a 16gb
5s which helped a lot. For the past year I've had a 128 gb 6s which is
even better.

RE: upgrading from 4s

2015-11-29 Thread Cristóbal
Financial situation aside, avoid the 16 GB model like you would avoid spoiled
fish at this point. I wouldn’t suggest you overextending yourself soly to get a
higher capacity device, but if it’s possible for you or for whoever is getting
you the phone, go for at least 32 GB if you can.

Re: Upgrading from 4s to 5s

Hi Debbie,

Connectg your phone to your computer and find it in iTunes. Be sure the Summary
radio button is checked. As you move through the summary information, you'll
come to backup options. One is a check box for encrypted backups. Check the box
and enter a password when prompted. You'll need this password to restore from
the backup. Now whenever you do a backup on your computer, it will be an
encrypted backup.

Best,
Anna

Hi, the capacity makes no difference and the model makes no difference. So,
feel free to restore away. One thing which helped me is encryping my backup
in iTunes. If your backup is encrypted, your email passwords, and I think
wi-fi passwords are also restored when you get your new iPhone restored from
 the 4s image.

 Hope this helps.

RE: Upgrading from 4s to 5s

HI Anna,

Thank you for this information; just one more question; the password that I
enter, should that be the same password that is associated with my Apple ID?

Hi Debbie,

Connectg your phone to your computer and find it in iTunes. Be sure the
Summary radio button is checked. As you move through the summary
information, you'll come to backup options. One is a check box for encrypted
backups. Check the box and enter a password when prompted. You'll need this
password to restore from the backup. Now whenever you do a backup on your
computer, it will be an encrypted backup.

Best,
Anna

Re: Upgrading from 4s to 5s

2014-03-12 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, this is done from iTunes. Connect your device and then tab to the
source list. In case you have no source list, press control-s to toggle
it on. Note that if it's on already, this hot key will toggle it off. In
any case, once at the source list, press D for device and then down
arrow once. Now you will be at your device. Press tab many times past
the summary information and you swill reach the back up settings area
eventually. Press space on back up to my computer and then space on the
check box to encrypt the backup. Once you do, you will be prompted for a
password. Type it in and then press tab and type it in again to confirm.
Press ok or encrypt, can't remember the button title. Your device will
do a back up and it will be encrypted from this point on.\

Hope this helps.
