It clearly says "in iOS 14", it's not specific to a particular phone, it's a
new feature of iOS 14.

What phone does that begin working with? I have the original SE and don't have
that option unless it's hiding somewhere.

2020-09-20 Thread chaltain
This was mentioned in the article that was posted here a few days ago on the 9
tips you should know about IOS 14. In that article, it also said that Apple was
aware of this issue and it would be addressed in an update to IOS 14.

hi! all,
in IOS 14
we can set the E-mail client to your favourite one !
but, after restarting the IPhone
it will back to the default one.
for example:
I set my default browser from Safari to Google Chrome.

after restarting the IPhone.

it will back to safari...

Well, I've tried lots of times to work with them but really don't like
threads at all, so I'm going to have to find a way through that keeps it
simple for me. (I don't mind reading messages related to a subject as
they come in a timeline.) I just find threads a bit of a maize really.

When you are in the Inbox and come to a thread/conversation with several
messages, don’t double tap on it. Instead with your rotor on “Actions” which
should be the default, flick down until you get to an item called “Expand
Thread”.
Double tap on that and now the thread will expand and all the messages are now
actually just showing up in whichever mailbox you are in as individual
messages. They continue to do so until you go back to the first message, flick
down to “Collapse Thread” and double tap.
Now you can swipe to any message in the thread, flick up or down to “Delete” in
the actions rotor and double tap to delete the message you are on.

if you double tap on any of the messages in the thread to open/read it you now
are back in the conversation and the messages option is there on the rotor and
you can flick up and down to move through your messages.
The delete button at the bottom of a message once again prompts you to “Trash
Messages” which means if you do so all messages/the entire thread will be
deleted.

I just realized as I am writing this that my phone locked on me and after I
unlock it it lost focus on where I was in the list and when I scrolled down
again to the message I tested this on it was still expanded. Also, leaving the
Mail app and going back to the home screen and then opening mail again left it
expanded.
Only when I closed the mail app in the app switcher and then reopened it was
the thread collapsed again.
Of course you can always go to the first message of the thread and flick down
to “Collapse” and double tap to manually collapse the messages back to a single
entry which contains all the messages of that thread.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but I quite like how Apple has done this
with the exception of the delete button in an open message, I think that should
let you delete the individual message you are in as well.

Hi Richard,

You can delete individual messages although I think when you double tap on a
thread and the rotor is turned to messages that once you flick to a particular
message the delete button at the bottom in the middle should just delete this
message and not prompt you to delete the entire thread. Anyhow, here is how you
can delete individual messages:

Re: E-Mail Client

2016-08-28 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This does sound a bit like Gmail. I've heard people rave about the Gmail
app, but I like to work with both threads and individual messages at the
same time. For example, I may want to file one message in a thread to a
folder and delete the rest. I've never gotten the hang of doing this
with the Gmail app on either IOS or Android or even the web interface
for that matter. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I just haven't
figured out how to do it quickly, easily and with confidence.

I like the Mail app as it is now on IOS 9 because it's obvious when I'm
taking an action on an individual message or an entire thread. For me
personally, I do find it a bit tedious though that I have to go into a
new page to look at the messages in that particular thread and then back
out of that page when I want to get back to my folder list. The focus
always hasn't been good about taking me back to the place I was at
before either.

I do like how Thunderbird handles threads on my Linux box and Aquamail
does on my Android device. I double tap the message and the thread gets
expanded or collapsed. It's easy to tell when I'm working on the thread
or looking at or taking an action on just one particular message.

It sounds like this new mail client in IOS 10 will give me what I'm
looking for. I'm not sure if or when I'll have an iPhone that'll be able
to run IOS 10 though. It's too bad you can't upgrade just the Mail app
so that those of us on IOS 9 could still take advantage of some of these
enhancements.

That doesn't sound very good, unless I'm misunderstanding it. It sounds
kind of like what happens when you get a digest. You know, somebody
replies to a message that they got as part of a digest and doesn't
delete everything. So you get this great long mass. I can't believe
that's what they're doing. Sighted people would hate that. I guess we'll

Here's the quotation on it:

Message. When it is selected, swiping down with VoiceOver will move
you to the next message in the mail document. You can turn off
threading, but not the behavior, or having them be organized in one
giant e-mail message rather than individual ones in a conversation
list within the subject. This might change, as sometimes in-line
message replies are not detected by the app — so you have to scroll
through older messages with greater than signs. In other cases, a
button allows you to expand the older messages. In my experience,
this is hit or miss, though with Gmail it recognized that the quoted
thread messages should be hidden most of the time

The only thing I do not like about the new threading method with the message
item in the rotor, is that if you chose to use threading, and you want to
delete just 1 message, it deletes the entire thread. At least, when
experimenting with that feature, I have not found a way to just delete one
message in a thread, or to delete all but one, however you want to look at it.

whatever is it called in English than Siri Dictation, atleast for my native

I can manage multiple messages on both apps in pretty similar way so I don't
know did you played with Aquamail settins?

Hey, didn’t know you can do a two finger flick up to read message content. Been
using iOS since iOS 4, and this is news to me.

That doesn't sound very good, unless I'm misunderstanding it. It sounds kind of
like what happens when you get a digest. You know, somebody replies to a
message that they got as part of a digest and doesn't delete everything. So you
get this great long mass. I can't believe that's what they're doing. Sighted
people would hate that. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see what the
final thing looks like.

Hi!
I believe we misunderstood somewhere along the way xD.
I know about threaded view, it is available since iOS 5 or
something but this is a threaded view for message list and it can
  be turned on or off.
iOS 10 is bringing several messages grouping in the single
conversation as seen in Gmail app which I really don't want and,
according to Tamas Geczy's article on CBT site it can't be turned
  off.
Here's the quotation on it:

A new threaded view for messages places all of the conversation
as though it were one long message. This adds a new rotor option:
Message. When it is selected, swiping down with VoiceOver will
move you to the next message in the mail document. You can turn
off threading, but not the behavior, or having them be organized
in one giant e-mail message rather than individual ones in a
conversation list within the subject. This might change, as
sometimes in-line message replies are not detected by the app — so
you have to scroll through older messages with greater than signs.
In other cases, a button allows you to expand the older messages.
In my experience, this is hit or miss, though with Gmail it
recognized that the quoted thread messages should be hidden most
  of the time

Holy cow! I just tried it, and you're right! Awesome! I hope I can still do
something like this in iOS 10 when the new interface comes out. Call me weird,
but I like having to go into the thread to read email, then back out of it to
go to the next thread. I'm the type of person (when I actually ever use the
computer for email these days) opens the message/thread in a new tab to read
it. That way I can keep my place in the inbox or folder that I'm in, then just
reply to the message in that new tab, then close the tab and go on my way with
the next, email.

Re: E-Mail Client

2016-08-27 Thread Christopher Chaltain
From my experience, you don't need to find anything when the new
message is pulled up on your screen, just do a two finger swipe up and
it'll start reading from the beginning of the message. Note this doesn't
work if the beginning of the message doesn't appear on the first screen,
such as when you have a very long list of recipients. This doesn't have
anything to do with containers. I think it's just a tweak built into
VoiceOver for the Mail app. I prefer this behavior, since I seldom want
to automatically read the headers.

2016-08-27 Thread englishrider91
This new mail interface sounds like it'll be confusing. Right now, I like being
able to find the person's name, then do a two-finger flick up to read the
message content. For some reason that I don't understand, this behaves
differently in the mail app than anywhere else in iOS. This gesture is supposed
to read the entire screen, but when done in the mail app once on the person's
name, it skips the header information and just reads the message. Not that I'm
complaining about that or anything; it's just odd. Maybe it has something to do
with these container things in iOS? I don't have that setting in my rotor, but
maybe it still counts as a container even if that option isn't on your rotor.
Anyway, I think I'm going to find this new mail interface rather annoying. I'm
going to read Jonathan Mosen's iOS 10 Without the Eye first before updating, as
well as listen to the podcasts released by AppleVis.

Ari

I installed Inbox few days ago to test it and, I can't say I like

  Hi Gordon,
I have heard there will be some changes in the upcoming version
of the stock mail app on iOS. It has been talked about in the
mainstream technical press. Hopefully, it isn't too awful. As
for aqua mail, yes, I have played with settings. I can certainly
delete all of the messages in my inbox quickly enough. But what
I haven't found a way to do which I can do on iOS, is to
actually go through my mail and interact with it efficiently,
Reading messages and replying as I wish, and or deleting
threads I don't want to read with just one flick of my finger as
I go. Google dictation does seem to be fairly accurate. Perhaps
it is a little bit more accurate for me than Apple. But because
I have such a hard time correcting mistakes, which it certainly
does make, I would rather have Apple, even if it's a little bit
less accurate, because I can fix it easier. I have heard that
Siri is going to get much better in the next version. Whether
that will carry over to dictation remains to be seen of course.
Have you tried the app that Kevin recommended on here a little
while back, inbox by Gmail I think was the name? It only works
for Google accounts. So if you have things other than Google,
then it's not good for you.

It just doesn't let me go through large volumes of mail as efficiently as the Apple client does. That's why am curious why you like it.

I don't get that extra text in my edit box when I'm looking for the
keyboard input button, so maybe that's a phone specific thing. I do
agree though that the double tap to end the dictation on the iPhone is
nice. I just find it a bit more inconvenient on Android but not a show
stopper.

I do use threads when reading my email, and in this way I do definitely
like Aquamail. If I double tab the message, the thread is expanded in
line without taking me into a new screen. Again I can just double tap
the sleet button and select the entire thread to be deleted all at once
or just select the messages in the thread I want deleted. I find this
more efficient than having to go into the screen with just the messages
from the thread in it, work with those messages, and then go back into
the parent folder. Now that I think about it, Aquamail handles threads a
bit more like Thunderibrd, which is how I prefer to deal with my
threaded email.

As I'm working through my messages in Aquamail, I will sometimes delete
the selected messages as I'm going or wait until I'm done and delete
them all at once. I agree, a lot of what you prefer is how you like
working with your email, and I might have tweaked how I do things now
that I spend more time in Aquamail then I do in Apple's Mail app.

I do it your way, but a lot of times in my inbox I hit the edit button, then
double tap on the message or thread that I want to delete; it says selected,
and then when I am at the end of my queue I hit trash selected messages at the
bottom. That's a lot easier for me then flicking up, double tapping to delete,
and then maybe losing my place in the queue and having to find it again
.

Hi!
@Sieghard; I was mentioning iOS meaning iPhone, iPod Touch or
iPad, it would probably work on all iOS devices.
@Mary; I like the stock app very much but there's gonna be a
large turnaround in iOS 10 with its interface so I'm looking for
alternatives. I used Aquamail on some Android devices and I like
its options, features and tones of settings for fine tuning its
  operativity.
I agree Android approach to navigating and editing is harder to
handle than iOS but as you correctly said, it doesn't have to do
anything with the app itself. Regarding dictation, I'm getting far
better results with Google Speech Input or whatever is it called
in English than Siri Dictation, atleast for my native language.
I can manage multiple messages on both apps in pretty similar way
so I don't know did you played with Aquamail settins?

@Carol; glad you understand my needs xD.
