Re: Google Maps Tutorial
Hi, have you looked at the app description? It is an app which gives you turn by turn directions for walking and/or driving. It also can give you directions from point a to point b using the local bus or transit system. Here in Houston it's come in very handy in letting me know how to get to where I need to using the public busses because it gives me the bus numbers I need to take, how many stops are on the way, and of course the times for the busses. It even calculates when I should leave my starting location and how far I will need to talk to the bus stop. I hope this helps. -- Raul A. Re: Google Maps Tutorial
I can't say which is better. Google Maps is free, where as Navigon costs. Navigon stores maps locally so you aren't using data while you're out and about, whereas with Google Maps you're using data to get to the servers and you won't be able to use Google Maps if you don't have any service at all. Re: Google Maps Tutorial
Hi, I think that depends on where you live and the quality of the map data. In terms of features, Navigon is more speech friendly with Voice Over I think. Plus, Navigon also will give you audible turn by turn directions for both vehicle and walking modes where as Google Maps only speaks driving directions. However the flipside is that you can find addresses much easier in Google Maps, and it has the added bonus of bus transit information, which Navigon doesn't have. Google Maps is free while Navigon is not. Google Maps uses more data, but Navigon has the maps installed on your device. Which is better? Only you can decide that for yourself. -- Raul A. RE: Google Maps Tutorial
Hello Craig, I assume that if you use iOS 5 that you are using the native Google Maps app which used to be one of Apple's stock apps in iOS. In iOS 6 Apple ditched Google Maps in favour of their own Maps app since Google did not permit Apple to use turn-by-turn voice navigation and maybe there were other reasons as well. The upside is that if you do get a new iPhone with the Apple Maps app you will find it rather accessible, the downside is that Apple is getting a lot of negative press since their maps app does not quite meet the high standard that people expect from Apple. Google has recently released the Google Maps app which is free in the app store. I haven't used the old Maps app in iOS 5 nor have I used the new Google Maps app, but I assume they would be quite different from one another. Apparently the new Google Maps app is accessible to a degree; I personally found that Navigon has always done a good job for me so I don't feel the need to fiddle around with google Maps. I am having great difficulty understanding how Google Maps works. Might this be because I am using an iPhone 3GS with iOS 5? The Google Maps page on the App Store says my phone and OS meet the system requirements, but it may well be that VoiceOver does better with button labeling if a user has iOS6. All comments welcome. Re: Google Maps Tutorial
My experience with Google Maps is that it's more than just accessible to some degree. I find it quite accessible and intuitive. More so than Apple Maps or MapQuest. I haven't used Navigon or a paid navigation app yet. Re: Google Maps Tutorial
Hello, Sieghard. I'm sorry for not making it clear that I'm referring to the Google Maps app, V. 1.0, that I downloaded from the App Store, not to the native maps that shipped with iOS5. For instance, when I press the button to show current location, no matter how carefully I swipe or touch spots on the screen, I can hear no information about where I am. I have read on this list references to a result actions button, but I cannot find this button on any screen of the Google Maps I have checked. Most of the screens only have a few buttons. One of them, for instance, is labeled simply query. Is this function looking for a destination address? Dear Friends, I am curious to know as to how to use it. Is there any way that will teach us how to use it well? Please? Thank you. Re: Google Maps Tutorial
When you say Voice guided navigation and flyover do *not* work on iPhone 4. aren't you referring to Apple Maps, the built in Maps app on IOS 6? I don't think this statement applies to Google Maps, which is what was being asked about. On 10/01/13 11:39, Pete Nalda wrote: Voice guided navigation and flyover do *not* work on iPhone 4.
