Re: Kindell verses iBooks

2013-09-24 Thread Mary Otten
To the best of my knowledge, Kindle books are not available through 3rd-party
sellers, not legally, anyway. They are sold by Amazon at its Kindle store,
which you get to by using the web browser and platform of your choice, then
have the book sent to your i-device, which has the app registered on it. As for
the page numbers, you are right that Kindle doesn't announce them, but you can
see then in the application's menu when you're in a book. Also, I'm pretty sure
that the page numbers do not actually correspond to print pages, because, at
least for iBooks, and I assume for Kindle as well, the number of pages it
thinks are in the book depends on which device you're using and your font size.
That is, for example, a given book when displayed in iBooks on the iPhone has a
lot more pages than that same book on an iPad. So it is worthless for
purposes of footnoting, if that's what you're thinking about.

Re: Kindell verses iBooks

2013-09-24 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Brad,
I have not yet upgraded to iOS 7, so I am not experiencing any of the problems
you mentioned. However, I have been using the Kindle app and like it a lot,
except for one thing.
Recently, Kindle has implemented a system where you can separate books in to
categories like you can with iBooks. Unfortunately, moving the books into the
categories you have made does not take them out of the Central listing. Thus,
if you have a large library, and you go through and move say all of your
cookbooks into a new section. They still remain in the central library listing.
This means that when you go back to put more books into a different category
you are stuck flicking through all of the books you supposedly just moved into
the cookbooks category.
The other very bad thing about the Amazon Kindle app and it's new categories is
that when you're in the categories are collections section and you flick
through the titles of the collections they're not read by voiceover. This is a
glaring accessibility error, and if you have a lot of different collections,
the only solution is for you to have memorized in alphabetical order the names
of all your collections. I hope they fix that in a future upgrade.
On the other hand, Kindle books are generally either the same or often cheaper
than IBooks. And there are many many more books on Kindle then there are in
iBooks. All that having been said, I do still like the iBooks app because of
it's much more efficient categories. And if a book is similar or the same in
price I will get the iBook for that reason.

I enjoy both apps and use them both.
I mainly purchase kindle books but check ibooks and kindle and purchase based
on price and availability.

I use kindle to be able to also purchase audible books at a discount at times.

Both apps work and I enjoy having choices of books and being able to shop and
price compare.
I agree Kindle book selection is better than ibooks.

I would use both apps and get a free book through each and try it out on your

Both are good.

I recommend trying both to see what reading experience you prefer. As far as

table of contents in books since this is not always provided in Kindle books.
But, both apps are free, and both have free books you can download so you
can get a feel for which one you like best with Braille support.

Hi:
Audible is owned by Amazon. You need a separate app to listen to
Audible books. It is a nice app and very accessible.

I don't really use the whisper sink but my mom and I share the kindle

 Works for us.
I read in kindle, Ibooks, audible and enjoy all of them.

RE: Kindell verses iBooks

2013-09-23 Thread Shai
Hi Ricardo and others on this subject,
Thank you for your responses. In trying out both a Kindle book and an iBook,
I noticed that the kindle app does not announce page numbers as one moves
page by page neither in braille or with voiceover. Is there a setting that I
am missing? Or is this really the case with the app?
Also, if one were to get the kindle copy and it is available through a third
party seller, would one simply download the book and transfer it to the
Kindle app via iTunes?
Thanks in advance for any responses

Hi,

I recommend trying both to see what reading experience you prefer. As far
as Voiceover speech, there's really no difference in my opinion. They both
do continuous reading. In iBooks, you might find it easier to navigate via
table of contents in books since this is not always provided in Kindle
books. But, both apps are free, and both have free books you can download
so you can get a feel for which one you like best with Braille support.

Re: Kindell verses iBooks

2013-09-23 Thread Joanne Chua
Hi,
As far as i know, Kindel and iBooks both does not anounnce page turn when you
turn from page to page.
I also found that it is easier to navigate page turn on iBooks, if you wish to
do it manually compare to Kindel.
In order to navigate page turn, or to a specific page on Kindel, if you are a
voiceover user, you need to double tap to bring out the menu, and 'go to
button', which is where you have the choice of table of contents, begining
book, end of book, etc.
What i found anoying with Kindel is it gives you the percentage of the book by
default rather than the page by default. This means, is harder for One to go
back in the future for reference purposes or such.
As far as downloading other books are concern, you can simply download your
third party books thru your email. When you got a 'dot mobi' file on your
attachment, it will promp you as to which program you want to open with. choose
Kindel, and the book will transfer to your kindel, under device rather than
cloud library.

Hope this help

I think you are able to navigate kindle books in whichever way the author
chose to mark them up. Some have pages and some have chapters and some do
