Re: Status Of Automatically Use Cellular Data When Wi-fi-Connectivity is Poor?

2016-05-30 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Yes. You won't be using cellular data or mobile data as you call it if you're
connected to Wifi. How far were you away from your house when your credit
disappeared? Wifi assist is activated when you're in range of wifi with a weak
signal. Turning this feature off should fix that problem.

2016-05-29 Thread Jewel

Just clarifying, mobile data is marked as being OFF, so if I turn it ON, it
will just sit there doing nothing as long as it has a wi-fi connection, and
will only go to work when it does not, which would be when, for instance, I go
into Gore or points further afield.
I recall having turned on something when I went to Invercargill yonks ago and
did not remember to turn it: whatever *it was: off until I found my credit
disappearing at an alarming rate.
This would have been wi-fi assist, not mobile data: right?

Make sure cellular data is enabled in Settings > Cellular

Yes, the iPhone should automatically switch to cellular data if you leave your
WiFi.

The setting we talked about, WiFi Assist, is not related to what you are
describing. What it will do is to kick in with cellular data if, for example,
you have areas in your house where WiFi is poor like maybe in the basement but
if you say your cellular data doesn’t seem to work when you go away from home
then this won’t do anything and you have to figure out why your phone is not
switching over to cellular data when you leave your WiFi area. The only reasons
I can think of is that cellular data is turned off or that somehow your
provider is not giving it to you.

Are you on a prepaid plan? Maybe Jonathan Mosen can help more since he is also
in New Zealand and more familiar with carriers and plans there.

I have a 5S iPhone, IOS9.3.2

and have, I think, precisely, the opposite problem.

I use the iPhone very rarely for anything but playing a time-wasting/filling :
game take your pick: so I scarcely ever need mobile data, but there is the very
rare occasion when I do take the iPhone more than a hundred metres away from
home base.

On these rare occasions, I have only been in the car for a few moments, when I
am given the message that Siri/voice-over or whatever it is, cannot make a
connection.

Do I have to remember to switch on mobile data manually or is there a setting
whereby I can instruct the iPhone to turn on mobile data when its wifi
connection is getting a bit shaky and then, when it came back into range, it
should switch it off?

I do recall switching on M D yonks ago and then forgetting to switch it off,
which I did only when my credit started to evaporate at an alarming speed.

If it is something that I have to do manually, how much time/distance am I
given or can I switch it on at any time.

When the iPhone is in this configuration, does it connect with the nearest
cell tower like mobile phones do?

How can I keep it off permanently, please?

You don't have to switch cell data off when you return home. Your iPhone will
switch back to wifi automatically and not use cellular data. If you're that
worried about Wifi assist, you can switch it off at the bottom of the cellular
screen in settings.

The setting we talked about, WiFi Assist, is not related to what you are

Re: Status Of Automatically Use Cellular Data When Wi-fi-Connectivity is Poor?

2016-05-28 Thread Jewel
Will this setting perform the duties that I asked about in my letter? that is,
switch mobile data on when wifi connectivity is poor or non-existent, and then
off when connectivity is reestablished?

Go into settings, then cellular. WIFI assist is at the bottom of a very long
list. I use the three-finger swipe up to get to it,although, sometimes, a
four-finger touch about two-thirds of the way down the screen will get you
there more quickly.

  Hi, list.

  I have IPhone5S with IOS9.3.2.

I can not determine the status of Automatically Use Cellular Data When

VoiceOver doesn’t say whether it is on or off, I want to keep it on off
status. How can I keep it off permanently, please?

  Thanks!

Re: Status Of Automatically Use Cellular Data When Wi-fi-Connectivity is Poor?

2016-05-28 Thread Jewel

RE: Status Of Automatically Use Cellular Data When Wi-fi-Connectivity is Poor?

2016-05-28 Thread Fazil
Thanks much, Sieghard.

I was not looking at:

“WiFi Assist”.

Yes, “WiFi Assist” is, indeed, off and thanks much for drawing my attention
there.

Fazil.

Hi Fazil,

Are you saying you go to Settings > Cellular and all the way at the bottom
where it says “WiFi Assist” and that it doesn’t tell you if it’s on or off?
Make sure you are actually on where Voiceover says “WiFi Assist” and not on the
line below which says “Automatically use cellular data when WiFi connectivity
is poor” because that is just meant to be an explanation of the “WiFi Assist”
switch above it.

If you have more switches where On or Off is not announced just empty your app
switcher and reboot your phone. I think I had this once many years ago and
after I did a reboot everything was back to normal.

Sieghard

Thanks much, Arnold.

Actually, the question was that the status was not announced, each
one-finger-double-tap does not tell me whether the feature is on or off and I
want to hear the status because I want it off.

Thanks again.
