Re: Using Scanjig with KNFB Reader

There are pictures of the pieces, so a sighted person could probably do it in 2. The ScanJig costs $30.00. It is made from hard plastic. It is a bit thicker than the other stands but it looks way more durable. It folds up into a box 13 by 9 and 1.5 inches thick. The beauty of the ScanJig is that it can hold anything from a smart phone to a tablet. It holds both the document and the device at an angle so there is less likelihood of casting a shadow over the document and it can capture the maximum of the room light or use the flash. There are no lights needed on the device itself. There is a movable Device Holder that snaps into one of four slots at various distances from the Document Shelf. On the Device Holder, is a little shelf that snaps in to hold the phone or tablet. There are 10 adjustment holes so you can get the optimum height of the device pointing at the document. I found with both the iPhone 5s and the 6, that the first slot, which is 11.5 inches from the document was the best position. I also found that if I put the shelf on the device holder in the second hole from the top, I can get the entire document even if it has narrow margins. There are some stick on pieces to help hold your device in place once you get the position where you want it. There are also two clips that can hold a document on the document shelf, for example, a tri-fold letter that wants to curl, you can clip it in place so it holds it steady. It is definitely more bulky when folded up than either the Giraffe Reader or the StandScan, but the fact that it will also hold a tablet from a full iPad to an iPad Mini or any smart phone I think gives it a big edge. Both the device holder and the document shelf should be at an angle. When you open the ScanJig, that lid, which is also the document holder, should open so that it is leaning back at an angle. Then, when you put the device holder in one of the four slots, it should be at a similar angle. If you examine the four slots very carefully, you will notice that there is a sloped slot that will have the device holder leaning toward the document holder and the metal stand will be slightly angled away from the device holder, much like some picture frames that are designed to sit on a desk. If you have either holder standing verticle, it isn't setup correctly. I'd suggest calling them if my attempt at describing this isn't making sense. I'm on vacation the ScanJig is in my office. Although I was able to finally move forward through the site after several attempts, I had one unexpected occurrence of which others might be mindful. Apparently the producer is offshore and the shipping charge is a full $10, even for this lightweight device. I made my purchase through PayPal and, as far as I could tell, this shipping charge is not identified prior to purchase. I certainly could have missed it, but thought I was reviewing the pages carefully. In the purchase process, there is an unidentified 10 Percent charge, which is $3.00, which is added to the purchase price. It shows up as X3% on the order page. RE: The ScanJig
An update. I received the following message from the ScanJig people: “Richard Turner forwarded a question that you had posted about the calculation of shipping costs for the ScanJig. I looked at the order you entered. The shipping cost should be $6.00 to your location in Texas. It appears that you may have selected another country during the checkout process. This resulted in a $10.00 charge instead. We will refund the difference ($4.00) via PayPal.” I appreciate the refund from the seler and thanks to Richard for forwarding my list note. I had not received a response to a message I wrote the producer immediately after the order, so this is a good indication that a forward from a list can sometimes help move things along. Re: The ScanJig
Once you find the correct country you must tab to leave the combo box. Otherwise, you’ll select another country as you’ve pointed out. That was the ultimate way after probably thirty attempts. This is also available on Amazon but without the holiday discount so it will be about $5 more. The secret though for both windows and mac is to tab out of that combo box. And, you must select a country as someone else pointed out. Also in the checkout you must select a state but that combo box works much better. Re: The ScanJig
What was a little disconcerting about this one though was that if you did make a mistake and select the wrong country, the combo box would disappear and you couldn’t correct it. the only saving grace is that the browser cleared the chat if i closed it so I could start over, but I think the disappearance was the only thing that really phased me for a while. I haven’t seen this one but agreed with your assessment of the others, so I’m sure i’ll be more pleased with this. Hi Richard, Since the Scan Jig uses the light source from the iPhone or iPad, do you still get accurate scans when using the Scan Jig? That's one of the advantage of the StandScan Pro with the built-in LED lights. I am intrigued with the construction of the Scan Jig and the ability to change the height on the position of the iPhone. I would appreciate some feedback on the scan accuracy before considering purchasing the product. Thanks in advance. It uses the room light first, but if the light is too dim, if you have the flash set to automatic, it will work just fine. I got 100 percent accuracy on what I had time to test. I’m on vacation now until January 5. I’ve thought about going into the office and bringing it home to test in different environments, but I’ve not taken that step as yet. If I do, I will certainly let folks know. It is more likely that I won’t do any further testing until January. Re: The ScanJig
Dan, Here is an updated version of my original message that started this thread in answer to your question. OK, I now have seen what I consider the Cadillac of stands. I got the ScanJig at work Monday. I used KNFB Reader to scan the setup instructions, free-hand, and was able to figure out the pieces and put it together. I enjoy puzzles, so it was fun putting it together. It didn't take more than about 5 or 10 minutes to figure it out without sighted help. There are pictures of the pieces, so a sighted person could probably do it in 2. The ScanJig costs $39.95 plus $6.00 shipping in the US. I think it is well worth it. Not to mention it is made out of much stronger material. Thatheir web site :!: www.scanjig.com Reality is the leading cause of stress for those who are in touch with it. I'm going to paste the setup instructions below and also the link to their web site. www.scanjig.com Note: I added the focal distances to the setup instructions below. ScanJig Set-up Instructions Product Description: The ScanJig is designed for easy tactile positioning of both a smart device and documents for correct focus, alignment and field of view. Once set up - the stand holds smart phones or tablets in a vertical portrait orientation and at an angle where the device's touch screen interface is facing the user. The stand can also hold a document, in the same vertical portrait orientation, and angle, directly behind the smart phone or tablet. The device holder can be adjusted to position your device's rear lens to point directly at the center of the document. Once the device is positioned in the optimum location, stops can be applied to lock in this position. Then your phone or tablet can easily be placed in the same spot for each use. The product's open design takes advantage of ambient light and helps avoid shadows. Further the device flash is completely unobstructed if this feature is needed. What is stored inside the ScanJig * 1 - Smart Device Holder and Device Shelf - the device will sit on the shelf. * 2 - Document Clips - to better hold creased documents or small items. * 4 - Peal and Stick Device Stops - after your mobile device is positioned the stops help hold it in place and provide an easy way to quickly use the same position again. * 2 - Thin peal and stick spacers - if needed, these can be placed under your device for fine adjustment. Initial Set-Up 1 Lift up on the latch at the front end of the ScanJig and open the cover all the way until it stops. The inside of the cover is the Document Bed with a shelf on the bottom and a fence on the right. Re: The ScanJig
I'm waiting for confirmation from ScanJig, but I believe I gave the wrong price. I went by memory from reading the review in AccessWorld from last year; that was a mistake. Also, this model is a newer model than the one they reviewed. I think the correct price is $39.95. The price I remembered was a sale price referenced in the AccessWorld article. I should have double checked the price with ScanJig before sending out my review. However, even if it is indeed $39.95, and it probably is, it is still well worth it. I am also sure there is a refund policy, which I will also check out and post corrected information as soon as I have it. If you are wondering how I could possibly have not known the price, it is because they sent me one to evaluate because I am the Training Center Director at a Commission for the Blind. The guy from StandScan also sent our agency a a couple free StandScans. The original model, and then the one out of the more improved material. Also, the Giraffe Reader was sold to me at half price. So, now that I have evaluated all three stands, if one can deal with the larger size of the ScanJig when transporting it, I still say it is hands-down the best stand and the most versatile. Sorry for the confusion, but once I hear from the ScanJig folks, I will post corrected information. But, it does look like the regular price will be $39.95. Not to mention it is made out of much stronger material and at a great price. I'm going to paste the setup instructions below and also the link to their web site. www.scanjig.com

I'm trying to order this. When I come to the shipping combo box I pressed U for US which took me to US Virgin Islands but then I couldn't arrow down and the combo box disappeared. Anyone figured out how to select the right location or how to get the combo box to appear if you do make an error as I apparently did? This is also available at Amazon but without the holiday discount. Place a document on the shelf and against the fence. 2 Positioning your device camera for a full screen view of the document. This initial set-up is done once, the optimum device position is then preserved by applying the peal and stick stops for subsequent uses. Reach inside the ScanJig tray and lift the Device Holder up and out of the storage clips. Slide the Device Holder into one of the four slots near the front of the ScanJig tray. The bottom of the Device Holder snaps into the two anchor clips located at the bottom of each set of slots in the tray.
