Re: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
About 6 months ago my Apple earpods just stopped working completely on my iPhone 5. They work just fine on any other gadget. I tried three different sets to be sure. I bought some Samsung earphones for about $4.95 from Amazon and they work to start and stop the music or books as well as to control Siri. Only the one button works on the Samsung earphones but it is the one I need. I am hoping that perhaps the IOS 7 will restore the capacity to use the Apple earpods. Eventually I may have to replace the phone because of the earphone problem and the fact that the home button will no longer close a folder. And the power button will not work at all. The iPhone goes to sleep only after the allotted amount of time has passed. When I first started having the earpod problems I did several hard resets and even restored the whole iPhone from a backup. No luck. If it didn’t cost $200 to replace it through the insurance I would do so ASAP. RE: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
Hi Sherry, If you have an iPhone 5 it must be just under 1 year old even now since it was only released on September 19 or 20 last year so if you had this problem 6 months ago, why are you not simply asking Apple to replace the phone, it should not cost you a Cent since it has a one-year warranty. What you describe sounds definitely like warranty to me, I have gotten my phones replaced for less over the years. RE: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
Thanks for everyone's comments on this thread. After playing around some more with my earpods and iPhone 5, fiddling around with the earpods plug in the jack either through rotation or re-seating will eventually cause the volume icon to flash on the screen after which I get a slight volume boost and the control buttons on the earpods then work. This has to be a hardware problem so after the iPhone 5S/FC new release storm passes, I'll get my phone replaced since it's still under warranty. If other similar type headsets have the same issue, I would say your only real choices are to try a complete phone reset after having performed a backup of course, or taking it into an Apple Store as it's possible that the headphone jack could be defective. Thanks for listening! - Original Message - From: Alan Lemly To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, September 14, 2013 12:29 PM Subject: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results I'm looking for some suggestions for correcting a problem I'm having with my Apple Earpods that came with my iPhone 5 and use of its remote and volume buttons. Often, when using the earpods, neither its volume or remote buttons do anything. However, if I power off my phone, when I power it back on, I note that the volume on reboot seems a bit louder which always foretells that the earpod buttons will then work. This rebooting doesn't always work the first time but eventually the earpod button functions return but alas the cycle always repeats. I've tried other earpods with buttons and they seem to work even less frequently including a replacement earpod set I got from Apple under warranty. I'm not a big fan of resetting my phone and am even less inclined to consider a phone replacement since I'm not convinced this isn't purely a headset issue. I am running iOS 6.1.4 and thought I'd throw this out there since there are many smart folks on this list and I'm seeking ideas. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. RE: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
Thanks, Arnold. I was aware of that potential with a reset and I will definitely do a complete backup to my computer and have it and iTunes handy before I attempt one. It has turned it off every time for me, others on this list say it has never turned it off. So, I would be near a computer with iTunes, or sighted help before trying it, just in case it turns it off for you. Re: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
If the system is still responding, couldn't you just power it off and power it back on instead of doing a reset? Hold the lock button down for a few seconds until you hear slide to power down and then double tap the screen. After 20 seconds or so, press the lock button for 5 seconds or so and wait for the phone to come back on. Re: iPhone 5 and Inconsistent Headset Remote Results
Backing up your device always is a good idea. But the home and power button reset shouldn't erase anything, VoiceOver probably is the only thing that potentially gets turned off. And some on the list say it doesn't get turned off on their devices. Those who can read the screen can do this reset with no problem.
