Thanks to all who suggested clearing out the text field while in messages. Doing this then going out back in gave me a screen with only text messages, no keyboard. Thanks Christopher, this does work. But how can I get rid of the keyboard? I only want to see the keyboard if I choose to type a message. I do not want to see it all the time. If I start from a recent message displayed on the screen, I can swipe left and go back through the list of previous messages in reverse chronological order. Note that using the various page advancing gestures didn't have any effect and just exploring the screen or swiping right from the top only got me to a few messages that were actually displayed on the screen. Hi Sherry, If I open a conversation I am not usually in edit mode hence the text edit field is at the bottom of the screen with no virtual keyboard showing and I have to double tap on the text field to go into edit mode and bring up the keyboard. If your conversation opens in edit mode with the keyboard on the screen, just try to double tap on the edit field until you hear Insertion point at end, then double tap and hold the Delete button to make sure there is absolutely nothing in the text field including spaces. If it is empty the Send button should be dimmed if you touch it. Then double tap on the Back button at the top left or use the scrub gesture to back out of the conversation and go to the main Messages screen. Now if you open the message again you should not be in edit mode and the virtual keyboard should be hidden. Let me know if that works for you. Hi Sherry, That is normal behavior. You double tap on a person/conversation and a window opens with your message history and at the bottom is a text box. Double tap on the text box and it goes into edit mode and the keyboard comes up so you can send another message in that conversation. I don’t generally keep conversations which go back over weeks or months, but I believe old messages may be hidden after they reach a certain age. If you have upgraded to iOS 8, you might also want to go to Settings and Messages and check how long your text messages are kept before they are automatically deleted. This is a new feature and you can set this to 30 days, 1 year or Forever. I'm sure I got frustrated with this once, but having fiddled on 2 different 4S's running 7.1.2 and 8.1; and can't reproduce the problem. Whichever way I go back up to the thread or sender list, going back into any has closed the edit field until I double tap it again with a view to replying. I should try the iPad, I think that might have a different slant on things like this. Ok, this is precisely it. A safeguard in case you really need to write that person and got half a message you don't want to lose. So, I did as said before - Get VO on to the text field, crank rotor round to Edit, flick up/down to select all and double tap, flick up/down some more to cut and double tap; then back out of that sender's thread and the text field will close and stay closed until you double tap it to edit in it again. In addition to what was said below, even when the virtual keyboard is up, I can still go back and review my previous exchange of text messages. If I start from a recent message displayed on the screen, I can swipe left and go back through the list of previous messages in reverse chronological order. Note that using the various page advancing gestures didn't have any effect and just exploring the screen or swiping right from the top only got me to a few messages that were actually displayed on the screen. Speaking of reading previous sent, does anybody know where the button is that used to load more of your message history? It seems to be gone for me in iOS 8, and I was wondering if I am just not seeing it for some reason, or if it's gone for everyone. Stuck in an Edit Screen for Text Messages
Hello all, When I click on a person under messages, instead of getting all the messages, I get a screen to edit a message. The keyboard is at the bottom of the screen. I cannot find an exit or cancel. I see the send right above the keyboard tried just sending a message thinking this would get me off of this screen ..
