Re: The weather channel app
Hello, everybody just wanted to tell you that I have been playing around with the weather channel app and it is a challenge as far as Accessibility is concerned, but, if you turn on screen recognition while you’re in the weather channel app, it will read more things to you And if you tap on play video, it will play the videos to you and the ones that actually have somebody talking will be somewhat accessible to you the ones where they play music what we will not get anything out of. But, for those people they can see the screen time and can read some of it. Some of the videos could mean something to you. There is also an option for making the video film more of the screen. That could help somebody who has some vision. The weather channel app may be hard to work with, but I would say don’t give up on it completely. All the alerts that it puts out or accessible. If you have worked with it, you know, a little bit about navigating it. Weather Ology is definitely a lot easier to work with in years. It is. Weather Ology is definitely a lot easier to work with and use. It is totally accessible and would probably work out better for most of us. I got the free Weather Channel app over the weekend and already gave permission to track my location and send me alerts. This morning I went into it and attempted to set up the alerts and found the area to do it. That’s when II ran into problems and confusion. I toggled on the alerts I need, at least I though I did, anyway, but each time I got this sign-up thing popping up. I tried to go back to set up the next one and It reported what I thought I had turned on was still off, as I thought I could turn on several and than go do the sign-up. The sign-up process itself was a bit confusing, and I’m not totally sure if I’v actually done it or under what password. The first time it said there was an error and to try later. So I did a moment later and tried with same password but somehow it reported I had put in something different. I accepted but now don’t know if I have something to log in with or if I am correctly logged in. So now I totally don’t know where I stand with the account or my alerts. I really wanted to get these done quickly as we have a tropical storm moving across Florida imminently. I know there was a Facebook sign-up option as well which I tried and wasn’t sure I did correctly either, as I have an accountthere. I did get a gone button on that but didn’t hit it immediately and think I should have. I need all this confusion cleared up. Hi, I have the twc max which I think is the paid version of this app. It isn’t the best out there but it is definitely useable much more so in my opinion than that offered up by Accu Weather which I’ve never found easy with which t work. Robin From: Cristóbal Sent: Monday, March 23, 2015 1:33 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: The Weather Channel app Hello list, It’s been a long time since I’ve used this app since Voiceover accessibility became less and less. I was curious to know if it’s gotten at all better. Also, earlier this morning, I received an email from TWC requesting testers for their new iOS ap design. I replied yes. Perhaps others who are contacted by TWC will also agree to provide feedback to hopefully get the app once again VO friendly. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All: This disappoints me a little. Under ADA regulations, companies are legally required to make their products, including apps ACCESSIBLE, not only for hearing-blind, but also for DEAFBLIND! No, companies are not required to make all apps and / or products blind, or deaf blind accessible. Some companies are required to make certain apps or products accessible. Don't believe me? Go purchase any new Nokia Phone running Windows Phone Seven or Eight and try to use it. Microsoft's most up-to-date phone software is not accessible. Purchase any Sony, Panasonic, or any other smart phone that is not Android and try using it. Absolutely zero of these phones are blind accessible. Unless the Allergy app is being marketed to the federal government, it does not need to be blind or deaf blind accessible. Re: Weather Channel App
Speaking of allergy alert, I could not find an app with that name. It was something else and the app said allergy alert .com was the web site. When I tried to use it, no matter what I did it kept telling me it could not find me by location. I went into settings and turned off location services and put my zip code in the app. Still no luck. Do I have the wrong app. If I don't, how do I get it to see me? Could I not be in coverage area? Re: Weather Channel App
Multiple US laws related to accessibility are being discussed here. The American's with Disability Act is meant to prevent discrimination against the disabled with respect to employment. Employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations for their employees. Unless your company requires you to use this allergy app, it would not be covered under the ADA. If your company did require you to use an allergy app, the pressure would be more on the company to find an accessible alternative rather than force the developer of this particular app to make it accessible. The Telecommunications Act says that telecommunications devices need to be accessible. Note that just because a device isn't accessible doesn't mean there isn't a law that's being violated. It may take someone taking Microsoft to court over their inaccessible cell phones before the law is enforced and Microsoft is forced to make their product accessible. The Rehabilitation Act requires that any products purchased by the federal government or with federal dollars need to be accessible. Note that there's a lot of overlap here. For example, if your company requires you to carry a cell phone than it needs to be accessible. If you work for a company or an agency that gets federal dollars than anything it purchases, such as a cell phone, needs to be accessible. It isn't the case that only apps and devices being marketed to the federal government need to be accessible. Reasonable accommodations in the ADA, the Telecommunications Act and even the Rehabilitation Act extend beyond federal government agencies. I'm not sure how many smart phones there are now running something other than Android or IOS or Windows Phone, but there have been and may still be some feature phones from LG, Samsung and Motorola which are accessible. Re: Weather Channel App
Actually, the telecommunications act states one model in a company's phone line needs to be accessible, when it is not an undo burden on the company to do so. As for Microsoft, Code Factory has developed an app for Windows Phone which performs all the basic functions within the phone. It cannot access any other app, but Microsoft is now within legal bounds. Re: Weather Channel App
Well, as a federal employee I can tell you that the government has purchased Blackberry phones for years, and except for actually placing calls, they are not accessible to the visually impaired. Sighted workers can do Email, text messaging, and can even produce documents that they can sync with MS Word documents on their office PCs, but not blind workers. Everybody who knows anything about Section 508 of the Rehab act, knows that it has always been dead on arrival. The Telecommunications Act does only apply to the telecommunications portion of a device, so Code Factory's product may satisfy the Telecommunications Act, but 3rd party add-ons are allowable if making the device itself accessible is not readily achievable. Since Microsoft's other products are accessible, and both Google and Apple produce accessible cell phones, I doubt Microsoft could claim that making their Windows Phones accessible is not readily achievable. Of course, if companies provide cell phones to their employees and expect them to use any features outside of the features provided by Code Factory's product then this would be in violation of the ADA. Also, if any US federal dollars are used to purchase a Windows Phone, I think the Rehabilitation Act is being violated, since there are options, such as the iPhone and Android phones, which are much more accessible and don't require a 3rd party application. It isn't clear to me at all that Microsoft or Nokia are following the law, even if you just look at the Telecommunications Act. I'm not a federal judge though, so I think this still needs to be settled in the US courts before we'll know for sure. On 5/26/2014 5:30 PM, David Chittenden wrote: Actually, the telecommunications act states one model in a company's phone line needs to be accessible, when it is not an undo burden on the company to do so. As for Microsoft, Code Factory has developed an app for Windows Phone which performs all the basic functions within the phone. It cannot access any other app, but Microsoft is now within legal bounds. Thank you Joseph! On Thursday, May 15, 2014 1:57:42 PM UTC-4, Joseph FreeTech wrote: Hi all, some time ago I found a very accessible and very informative weather app called Fahrenheit. It shows the current temperature on the home screen, so if you swipe to this app or place it somewhere on your home screen where you can quickly tap on it, the current temperature will show. For example: Fahrenheit 70, or Fahrenheit 86, etc. Since this app is incredibly accessible, you can add as many cities as you want and use a 3 finger swipe from left to right and vice versa in order to access the current weather and forecast for any city you have configured such as temperature in your city, or temp in New York, or temp in whatever city you'd like. On the main screen associate with your city, the current temperature is shown at the very top of the screen so it is easy to acquire the desired information, but below is also the forecast for what I believe is the next 2 weeks. Amazingly, this app is only $1. I will sate up front there's a little quirk in that on your Home screen you will not hear Fahrenheit 99 degrees, you will hear Fahrenheit 99 new items. I don't know why it is saying new items but since all I care is about the temperature, this quirk doesn't bug me in the least. Smile. Here is more iTunes store info: Description Fahrenheit displays the temperature on your Home Screen icon, Notification Center and Lock Screen. Fahrenheit is a stunning weather application that uses latest technology to show you the current temperature of any location right on your iPhone/iPad Home Screen! Beyond the real-time temperature on the Home Screen Fahrenheit also is the number one weather application giving you very detailed weather information of unlimited cities world wide, packed in a gorgeous design and easy-to-use user interface! LOCKSCREEN NOTIFICATION CENTER Now, in addition to the temperature badge, you can set up the app to notify you of any changes in the weather as they happen, right in the Lockscreen and Notification Center. It works really easy. We have Notification Setting that allows you to receive a Popup/Banner alert from our Push Server. This alert will also appear in the Notification Center and Lockscreen to show the temperature of the last update. You can set the number of notifications as you prefer (max 1, max 5 etc) in the iPad/iPhone general settings. TEMPERATURE IN THE ICON BADGE Fahrenheit is backed by an online web server that uses Push Technology to push the current temperature of any location to your iDevice. This makes it possible to always automatically have the up-to-date temperature displayed in the red badge at the top-right of the Fahrenheit icon on your Home Screen. Fahrenheit supports all iOS Devices: iPhone 4s/4, iPhone 3Gs/3G, iPad 2, iPad and all iPod Touch devices! It is not possible to display the temperature in Celsius. You have to download the Celsius application instead. FULL FEATURED WEATHER APPLICATION Fahrenheit brings you all weather information available for every location in the world and a 10-day forecast. In addition to these powerful forecasting features, Fahrenheit provides more comprehensive weather information. This includes detailed information regarding cloud cover and rainfall totals. Fahrenheit also gives users information about sunrise and sunset times. Many users also enjoy the real time wind direction feature, which utilizes a display arrow on screen to indicate the wind direction at any time thanks to the built in magnetometer. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fahrenheit-weather-temperature/id426939660?mt=8ign-mpt=uo%3D8 Plese let me know if you have any questions. RE: Weather Channel App
No, they broke it. I contacted them via their website requesting accessibility improvements in the future and expressing my disappointment with how their reasonably Voiceover accessible app is no longer so. Who knows if it'll matter, but it can only help if others let The Weather Channel know as well. You could also leave a review regarding the same in the app store. Probably one of those things that they didn't mean to do, but did nevertheless. Hi JoJo. I've started a new thread so that others can see it and perhaps be able to answer your question better. Your message got lost within the Sendero thread because it wasn't a new message. Now onto your question. I've not tried this app, but if you are looking for an accessible weather one, you can try Weather Bug, Fahrenheit, or just save a shortcut from your personalized wunderground page from Safari. I'm sure others will have other suggestions as well. Thanks. -- Raul A. Gallegos Finally heading to the comic book store. Re: the weather channel app
I have had great success on the IPhone saving a shortcut from www.weather.com. After you access the site it can use location services to get your location or you can enter it. After this is done, it lands on a page that works very well to save a shortcut from on your home screen. This page is about 95% accessible. Getting the current conditions, the weather for the next 48 hours and the next 10 days works perfectly. Accessing the weather alerts when it puts them up on the page is tricky but can be done. There is a heading and a link after it. Swiping to it and double tapping does not activate the link for some reason still unknown to me. Finding that link with your finger and double tapping it does work however. Swiping to it will tell you about it and be just like you have it focused, but it will not activate that way.
