It probably varies between models, but in general, how does one tell a router
to check for a firmware update? I would think it best if it did it automaticly.
Thanks for any information.

Security flaws in home routers are discovered all the time. These flaws can,

security fixes.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your home router about every 4 years (even
if working and even if you have been doing the firmware updates). And, there
have been advances in wi-fi capabilities in the last several years that you may
be able to take advantage of.

Re: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-21 Thread Arlene
Juan, if you could place your router in a central place in your house that
might help. If you have a combination of wireless and wired devices an idea
would be to place the router where it would be close to the wireless
devices. Some routers have more antenners than other routers do, but you
could experiment with working with the antenrs that might help the
situation. It could even make the difference in the speed. As far as the
accessibility of the routers some are more accessible than others.

Like I said earlier, I just put in an Eero mesh system .. it was totally
accessible and I had it up and running in less than 10 minutes ...

One of the systems with a beacon would most likely cover your size home without
any issues .. depending on where you place the main router and the beacon ...

Re: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-21 Thread Arlene
Cris, the tp-links we have is just a router. in knowing what you're looking
for, We use to have cox and they offered several options of routers and
modems. Due to having problems with their service and equipment we ended up
with the very latest aries cable modem and the tp-links router because the
separate conponents worked better than the combined modem with the router,
however there might be some good combined cable routers and modems out
there. At one time cox was a good internet provider but they got to where
they couldn't provide the service that they were selling, so we lucked out,
and made a few phone calls and found that we had fiber in this area. Now we
have unlimited one gig service up and down, you notice from this email
address we're on earthlink which is right, and the provider for earthlink is
at&t, so our router/modem is the most current one from at&t and it's a very
good one. I'm just letting you know about this, just in case you want to
check to see if you have fiber in your area. Earthlink calls their service
hyperlink. from at&t if one has their service it might be just called fiber.
We're so spoiled now that we'll probably never go back to cable. It's just
something to think about. If you stay with comcast, we have the latest aries
cable modem that we used with cox. If you need any other details or have any
questions, just let us know.

My Medialink router has served me well for 8.5 years, but it quit this
afternoon. What routers are recommended now? I will be using it with my
iphone and Victor Reader on wifi, and my computer via wired connection.
Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Updating Router Firmware, was Re: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-21 Thread chaltain
On my Netgear, I log into the router through a browser and it let's me know if
there's a firmware update and gives me the option to have it installed. After a
lightning strike, I wasn't able to log onto my router, and there was a way to
download firmware to my PC, connect my PC to the router with an ethernet cable
and upload the new firmware to the router. I don't recall seeing a setting to
have the firmware updated automatically.

Updating Router Firmware, was Re: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-21 Thread Arnold Schmidt
It probably varies between models, but in general, how does one tell a router
to check for a firmware update? I would think it best if it did it automaticly.
Thanks for any information.

Security flaws in home routers are discovered all the time. These flaws
can, for example, allow access into your home network from the Internet.
Even if you keep the firmware updated on the router (and most people do
not), eventually the router manufacturer no longer will support a router
4-5 years old with security fixes.

2020-06-21 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have ordered the TP AC1200, I think it is, from Amazon for $49. It only goes
up to 300 mbps, but that is okay, that is faster than what I have now, and I am
too cheap ever to pay for one of those megabyt connections in the future unless
they come way down. My router is supposed to come tomorrow.

RE: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-20 Thread Peter Logan
I just replaced an Airport Extreme with an Eero Pro ... in my case I also
added a second beacon, but depending on the size of your place and such that
may or may not be necessary. Eero has done a very good job with making the app
accessible .. and I had things all set up within about 10 minutes. If you have
an Apple TV or Home Pod, the Eero has Home Kit support, so you can integrate it
into your home. Like I said the app is very accessible and it will let you
control all the devices on your network .. If you use the same SSID and
password, all should just connect up without any fussing .. The router has 2
ports on it,, one to connect to your internet modem, and the other for whatever.

Hope this helps ..

My Medialink router has served me well for 8.5 years, but it quit this
afternoon. What routers are recommended now? I will be using it with my iphone
and Victor Reader on wifi, and my computer via wired connection. Thanks for any
suggestions.

RE: Time To Get A New Router

2020-06-20 Thread chaltain
I've had a Netgear router now for about eight years, and I have no complaints.
When I bought it, I was considering Netgear or Asus. I'm not sure what's
changed recently though.
