Re: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
What is the link to the ZEDGE website? This is really my first time ever using this for ringtones. Are used to use Audiko but I can't anymore because they have their own app and every time you try to go to the website it immediately pops up something about a new app but whenever you try to download it says that it can't be downloaded in the US App Store. Do you know if there's any other sites like this when you can get free ringtones? While zedge is a pretty popular One I've heard it doesn't have that many good ringtones that I like and I'm just trying to find other places to go get ringtones. Thanks again. RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Hi Jerry, The only way to get ringtones from the Zedge app to your phone is via iTunes. If you double tap on a ringtone there is a "Save" button on that screen. This will save the ringtone in the app, you then have to connect the iPhone to itunes, go to the File Sharing area, find the Zedge app which will be listed as an app for which file sharing is available and then save the shared files to a location on your computer. I guess if you do in fact get there it would be easiest to save them directly to the automatically Add to iTunes folder. If you successfully save a ringtones or multiple ringtones, they would then be moved to the Tones folder and automatically added to your tones library, then all you have to do is sync your phone. I have not tried this recently, but I understand from other posts I have read that in the current version of iTunes the file sharing area is rather inaccessible. I am not sure if it is completely inaccessible or simply not easy to use. As I said in my previous post, I find it much easier to download the ringtones from the Zedge website. I use Jaws 17 and don't know anything about NVDA, but I assume it has some of the same features as in quick navigation to headings, buttons and so on. A really useful feature to find the required buttons and links on the Zedge website is the virtual find feature in Jaws. If NVDA has something like that, you can just search for the word "View" once you have activated the link for a ringtone. Activating the "View|" link will play the tone, then there is a "get" button or link, but it is Get followed by a bunch of information. Once you activarte that there will be a Download link and once you activate it you just have to interact with the Internet Explorer information bar (if IE is what you use) and tell it to "Open" or "Save" the tone. I usually choose Save, this saves it in my Downloads folder and from there I copy it to my Automatically Add to ITunes folder. I was all happy when I saw the Share button in the Zedge app and thought I could now simply email the tone to myself or, even better, use the "Save to Dropbox" option. However, after I saved what I thought were a bunch of ringtones I went to my Dropbox only to discover that all the app saves is a small text file with a link to the ringtone on the Zedge app. The same goes for when you select to share via email or text message,, all you get is the link. But it may still be useful since this will go straight to the ringtone on the Zedge website and since at that point you most likely already listened to it on the iPhone, you can then just download it. Hi Ari, Correct, pressing enter on it will play it in iTunes and add it to your tones library. RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Hi Jed, When you say that you "download" the ringtone, do you mean you use a PC and the Zedge website? If so the ringtone will be saved in your downloads folder. Before it will be available on your iPhone as a ringtone under Sounds > Ringtones you have to first copy or move the file from the downloads folder to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder which is located in \music\iTunes\iTunes Media (in the case of a PC). After that go to iTunes, connect your phone, go to the device section, find Tones in the treeview which starts with Summary at the top and then sync the ringtone. Also, make sure what you are downloading is in M4R format. There is a way on the Zedge website to tell it that you are using an iPhone and then all the ringtones you download will be in the correct format with the correct file extension. You cannot use MP3 ringtones on your iTunes unless you first convert them to the AAC (Apple Audio Codec) format. RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Hi Ari, The Automatically Add to iTunes folder is simply an easy way to put files like music or ringtone files into the folder where they should be and at the same time to add them to the appropriate library. Keep in mind that just copying a rington into the ringtone folder or a song into the music folder does not mean these files are also added to the library which is to say if you just copy a song into the music folder and then open iTunes, that song is not yet in your list of music. You have to sync or update that list so to speak by going to File > Add file to library or File > add folder to library and select either a single file or an entire folder. If, however, you copy the song or ringtone to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, iTunes will do this automatically. It will know by the extension of the file where it should go. The only time where this would not be of use is if you completely maintain all your media on an external drive or if you have it on the hard drive, but for some reason choose not to use the subfolders in the iTunes Media folder. I can see where somebody who has maybe a not very large solid state drive in their laptop may want or need to use an external drive if they have a ton of music or even more so for movies, but I don't see why one would not put ringtones in the default folder since they don't take up much space. Hi Alan, You can save yourself the step of having to add the ringtones folder to your library to update any new ringtones you may have put in there. The reason I like emailing them to myself through the app rather than using the website is that I don't have to fiddle with searching or anything like that. Downloading attachments through Gmail is very, very easy, and everything is in one place, in my email inbox, so I don't have to try and figure out what search result is what. Sometimes there's things that are named very similarly in Zedge, and if I email them to myself, I know exactly what I'm downloading without having to listen to it from the website to double-check check that I am indeed getting the exact same tone that I liked previously. You need iTunes to get them onto your phone, no way around that and it really is not that difficult. I think so many people are somehow intimidated by iTunes because of past accessibility issues. Re: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Is there any way to get the ringtones from Zedge on iPhone without using iTunes? Android just downloads them from the site. Just curious as I just cannot stand iTunes. RE: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Sieghard and Ari, I agree that for transferring ringtones to one's computer, it is much easier to use your computer and web browser. I find that much easier and when I locate a ringtone I like, I go to the Zedge site on my computer, log in, find the ringtone, and save it to my iTunes Media\Ringtones subfolder. I then just add that folder to my iTunes library the next time I'm in iTunes and sync any new ringtones to my iPhone 6. I did save a ringtone to my phone using the Zedge app but by the time I hooked up the phone to my computer to transfer that ringtone to it using iTunes and File Sharing, it is much easier just to use the computer and my web browser to grab the ringtone initially. I do like using the Zedge app to sample the ringtones to see what's available. I haven't actually tried the Save Ringtone option because I saw the Share button and thought this should be easy. I selected Save to Dropbox from the share sheet, but when I went to my Dropbox folder on the PC I realized that all this does is to save a little text file with a link to the ringtone on the Zedge.com website. I still find it easier to just use the website, there I can type in a search word, then I use the Jaws Find command to search for that word and I can usually easily find the ringtones. If I then press enter on one it opens up, I use Jaws Key+F7 to bring up a list of links, find "View" and that plays the ringtone. Then I look for the "get" link and then use the Jaws cursor to find the download link which I find easier because after clicking on it I can use Alt+N for the notification bar and select save. If I then go back with control+left arrow, find another ringtone and repeat, the Jaws cursor usually is right there on the download link. Re: Zedge version 2.5 app accessible
Alan, I find it easier just to email myself the ringtones, rather than try and use their app to grab them from your phone and stick them in iTunes. They say that you need to use some sort of app produced by them for windows to get the ringtones into iTunes. I'm pretty sure you could just use iTunes file sharing to do it, but given how messy that's gotten in recent versions of iTunes, that might be easier said than done.
