RE: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Wow, what a thread filled with speculation, cries of outrage and "Good
riddance" messages.

I am surprised by how many people are dismayed that eventually iTunes will go
away and you may note that I said "will go away" not "might go away". For now
Apple said iTunes for Windows stays around while on the Mac it is replaced with
these 3 apps for music, podcasts and TV. My surprise is based on the fact that
I rarely ever read anybody posting anything good or positive about iTunes,
people would go through great length to try and avoid using it because many
considered it to be inaccessible or very poorly accessible with a screenreader.
At times that was in fact true, but for the most part Apple, Microsoft or Jaws
has always fixed whatever could be fixed to make it work better again. But as I
said, to me the writing is clearly on the wall and I doubt that in 2 years or
maybe less iTunes for Windows will still be around. I am equally sure that
there will be apps for Windows similar to those for the Mac to replace it, but
I won't even try and speculate, if they are true UWP apps I could definitely
see accessibility challenges ahead given the somewhat poor track record of UWP
apps regarding accessibility. For those who don't know what UWP apps are, UWP
stands for Universal Windows Platform and these are apps you get from the
Microsoft Store and nowhere else and they are different from traditional
desktop programs. There is, for example, an Audible app from the Microsoft
Store which allows you to play your audible books on a PC, you can choose to
stream the books or download them (no Audible Download Manager is required) and
all in all it's very much like using the Audible app on the iPhone except that
the Audible app for iOS is super accessible and the Windows app is not. There
are scripts from Doug Lee which help, but even using the touch cursor in Jaws
there are things like for example accessing the Settings which I have yet to
figure out how to do. I can get into Settings and read the different tabs or
categories, but activating them is a different story. When my wife clicked on
any of these categories or tabs I could then again navigate them, but it's
definitely far from being accessible.
As for iOS 13 and the fate of iTunes I think there is no point to speculate,
whenever WWDC happens they always announce stuff where they don't necessarily
give all the answers this early on, let's wait and see although by now it is
clear iTunes for Windows will stay around for now. As for Christopher's
reference to our disagreement, I still maintain my position that Apple will not
entirely want to alienate their Windows customers by completely dropping
support for the platform. I didn't listen to the keynote yet, but there was
talk that for the iPad Apple may make it much easier to connect external USB
devices such as thumb drives or external hard drives and to access their
content and speculation was whether such a feature will come to the iPhone. I
don't know if the new iPad OS offers easy and native access to content on
external devices, but if it does I think it again is just a matter of another
year or two before iOS will follow. Given dwindling sales numbers for the
iPhone Apple will be actually more concerned to be compatible with other
platforms including Windows and Android.

Best regards,
Sieghard

The big news: iTunes is no more. Instead, Apple is splitting iTunes into three
separate apps: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV. Users no longer need
iTunes to sync their phones to a computer.

I also wonder if you will only be able to back up your device to icloud

being only able to update your device over wi-fi.
My only thought is that they might incorporate the backup option into the

Not only will I miss the backup feature, but I will also miss the ability to
create and sync your own ring tones.

Maybe they will make a way to do this through windows.

Chris.

Hi,

Here is some information that might be helpful. I either heard about Apple
whiping out iTunes on the radio, or maybe I got it in an Apple news letter, so
I Googled this.

Janet

Apple is killing off iTunes, reports say

By

Chris Ciaccia

| Fox News

Fox News Flash top headlines for June 3

Just a few months after it became an adult,

Apple

is killing off one of its most controversial creations.

Launched January 9, 2001, the tech giant is set to end its music and movie
media player, iTunes, according to

Bloomberg.

The move, which will be announced at Apple's developer conference, had been
widely expected, given the rise of streaming services, including Apple Music

and its soon-to-be-launched Apple TV+.

The brainchild of Steve Jobs, iTunes ushered in an era where it made it easy to
access music legally. Users could pay as little as 99 cents for a song

or a similar amount for an episode of a TV show or movie, but it had outlived
its usefulness. Over the past several years, there were a seemingly endless

string of complaints from users about its cluttered nature, the amount of
computing power it took to run the program and other concerns.

APPLE WWDC PREVIEW: HERE'S THE NEW STUFF THAT'S COMING

To replace iTunes, Apple will launch three new apps for the Mac, Music, TV and
Podcasts, bringing it in line with Apple's strategy for iOS devices, which

already have dedicated Music, TV and Podcast apps.

Apple has already wiped the iTunes' social networking accounts clean. Both the

Instagram

and the

Facebook

page still exist, but all the posts have been deleted.

As Apple looks to smooth out its revenue and focus more on services, it has
turned the focus towards initiatives such as Apple Music, which has more than

50 million paying subscribers and lets users access more than 45 million songs
for $9.99 a month.

In addition to getting rid of iTunes, Apple will announce several new updates
to its operating systems, including iOS, macOS and watchOS. New health features

are expected to be incorporated into iOS and watchOS, including a revamped
Health app that will let users know how loud they are listening to music or

movies on their device or headphones.

Apple’s mobile operating system is tipped to add dark mode, easing the strain
on users' eyes and increasing battery life.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple will make these announcements and more when its
keynote address starts at 1 p.m. EST.

Fox News' Brooke Crothers contributed to this report. t

I agree. Let's not predict doom and gloom for Windows users. The truth
is that Apple hasn't said yet, and that will be the end of story for
now, accept it or not.

If iTunes will be in self destruct mode for Windows users, we'll have
plenty of time to come to terms with that, probably months.

If it happens, there will probably be multiple programs and apps to take
its place. Apple will let us know if/when, and not before then.

have used it for was to make backups of my phone, and I will miss having
that ability, even though I guess you can use iCloud for that purpose.

My wife saw/heard a news item this morning saying that apple planned to
kill off itunes. She didn’t know whether it was the phone app or windows
program. Anyone heard anything?

All,
This article proves it’s useless to speculate and much more helpful to wait on
answers. It appears that iTunes for Windows will be staying around. It baffles
me how much the blind community as a whole panics when any kind of change is
proposed. Anyway, here’s the article.

Somebody on another list claims that nothing is going to change on the window
side. But I don’t necessarily know where they got that. As for the encrypted
backup, I quit using it when they added all the stuff to iCloud that used to be
only in the encrypted backup. That plus the fact that you couldn’t back up all
apps anymore was enough to make iTunes more less useless for any sort of phone
back up for me. What I want to know is what happens with iTunes match? I have a
lot of music in the cloud that I ripped for my own CDs and was matched in
iTunes match. Some of that music is not on the Apple Music store or music
service I should say. And they’re telling me my match subscription is up for
renewal this month. Are they going to take my 25 bucks and then kill it? I
wonder how I find that out, and what happens to all that music that I owned and
ripped and now lives on an old Mac and in my music library in the cloud through
match.

My only thought is that they might incorporate the backup option into the

I don't know, but unfortunately you were relying on icloud and apple to take
care of all of that. As a professional and owner of alldigital audio
www.alldigitalaudio.com
we'd never would relie on out of house solutions because any of them could
change at any time. The recomendation is to keep your own backups in a safe
place, at least 2 copies of everything, besides having your collection stored
on something like icloud.

I think it’s ridiculous to speculate when we don’t know what they’re doing.
They’re supposedly is an update for iTunes for windows, although I haven’t got
it yet. Anyway, I’m sure Apple does not want to kiss off a bunch of customers.
That wouldn’t seem to make much sense.

Re: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-03 Thread Aleeha Dudley
Folks,
Apple is not going to kill of a program without providing an equal replacement.
Here is what we know has been done: Apple has split what was iTunes for Mac,
and only Mac right now, into Music, Podcasts, and TV. From what I understand,
iTunes for Windows received an update today for its users to support the new
betas, and it can still be downloaded from
https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes
<https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes>
Even on the Mac, radio is not at all gone. It is still in the music app.

Yes, my wife heard the same thing I really hope that’s not the case because we
use it on the computer to back up or iPhone and especially voice dream reader.
We have a big library and that’s the best way to back it up. Not sure what we

Re: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-03 Thread Ryan Mann
If that’s true, that could backfire on Apple. Mac computers are expensive.
Why would people who use Windows switch to a Mac when they can switch to an
Android phone and use it with their Windows computer? Some Apple fanboys will,
but the average person just wants computers and phones to use for work and
entertainment at an affordable price.

RE: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-03 Thread janet gross
Hello All,
Personally I don't think Apple gives a fly about Windows, and let's face it, we
can't blame them for that. As far as losing sales from Apple music subscribers
or iPhones, I doubt that very much. I am an Apple music subscriber, as well as
a iPhone user. I won't give up the Apple music just because of Apple killing
iTunes. Although, I won't think of purchasing a Mac though. I've been
seriously considering purchasing a Mini iPad, but I figure I can use my iPhone
as long as I have a Bluetooth keyboard, so I really don't need an iPad, but
then again, I think it really all depends what one might be using the iPhone or
iPad for. I will more than likely stick with Windows, and purchase a Windows
laptop. I don't know what Sieghard said about this though, but I think time
will prove you wrong! Smile!

My wife saw/heard a news item this morning saying that apple planned to kill
off itunes. She didn’t know whether it was the phone app or windows program.
Anyone heard anything?

wonder how I find that out, and what happens to all that music that I owned and
ripped and now lives on an old Mac and in my music library in the cloud through
match.

RE: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-03 Thread David Moore
Hi!
I download podcasts that are on iTunes with a pod catcher.
Will I be able to still do that.
I do this on a Windows 10 computer, and also, my Android phone!
I was wondering if the pod catchers will be able to search on iTunes for those
pod casts like always!
I need to know for Windows and Android!

This sounds like a money-making measure to me. Will it now be
impossible to transfer songs from a windows computer to an iPhone?

Not at all.
Let’s be positive.
The new program may give us better excess ability and more features.

Not only will I miss the backup feature, but I will also miss the ability to
create and sync your own ring tones.
Maybe they will make a way to do this through windows.

Since they were specific about the Mac, and stated that this had
already pretty much been done in iOS, I'm sure the change will also
occur in windows. You'll probably buy ring tons through the App Store
or through the Music app, but probably the app store. What will
probably be gone is the ability to rip CD's which Itunes does now but
it makes no monehy for Apple.

Re: apple killing ITunes?

2019-06-03 Thread Keith Bierman
>From apple.com <https://www.apple.com/macos/catalina-preview/>
iTunes forever changed the way people experienced music, movies, TV shows,
and podcasts. It all changes again with three all-new, dedicated apps —
Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts — each designed from the ground up to
be the best way to enjoy entertainment on your Mac. And rest assured;
everything you had in your iTunes library is still accessible in each app.
iCloud seamlessly syncs everything across your devices — or you can back
up, restore, and sync by connecting the device directly to your Mac.

Admittedly this is silent on Windows, but it seems most likely that the one
itunes app will be replaced with 3 separate ones ... perhaps a 4th for
backup. Time will tell, but I'd certainly not panic ;>

I also listened to the keynote and did not hear how iTunes task would be
handled outside of using it on the Mac.
I now wonder how you will be able to add music, ring tones, and other items if
doing it from windows.

I also wonder if you will only be able to back up your device to icloud now,
taking away the encrypted backup option to your computer. As well as being
only able to update your device over wi-fi.
My only thought is that they might incorporate the backup option into the
icloud program that you can install on a windows computer. Now this is just a
thought, I have not heard anything confirming this. One thing is for sure,
there is a lot of unanswered questions.

Apple is killing off iTunes, reports say
By

EST.

At this morning’s keynote, they said they were splitting it into three apps,
music, Podcasts, and the TV app. This was in the context of iTunes for Mac. If
they said something about windows, I didn’t see it or hear it. Also not sure
what happens to iTunes match, for people like me who have music up in the cloud
that is not part of Apple Music, but was written into iTunes along time ago.
