subject:"braille display"

Hi Richard,
I turned off Bluetooth hit the volume up volume down and held in the power 
button and it did not take the name of the braille display out of settings when 
you get to Braille under accessibility.
If you come up with any other ideas I would appreciate it thank you so much.

It is the three step process. 1. up volume, 2, down volume, and you want to do 
those two fairly quickly; then 3, hold the power button without also holding 
either volume button.
It will take at least 6 to 10 seconds before the power off message goes away 
and it starts the reboot process.

year. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to get rid of this title. It is no

If anyone has any suggestions other than resetting all my settings I would 
really appreciate it. Also just so you know, I am using an iPhone 2020, and 
there is there is no setting for more information when you go to braille in 
settings.

braille either if Bluetooth is off.  So I'm hoping that will clear out the 
memory of that device.

Try turning off Bluetooth.
Rebooting the phone with the pressing up volume, then down volume, then holding 
the power button until it restarts.

Then, check the braille settings which when you do you will have to turn on 
Bluetooth but see if it goes away.

Next is to call Apple accessibility.

Braille display

Hi,

I don’t use a braille display, so my suggestion is based on my experience using 
my device without any other technology. Have you tried turning on screen 
recognition or turning off screen recognition if it is on?? I have noticed, 
when using my iPhones on screen keyboard, if the cursor jumps around, turning 
on screen recognition if it is off or turning off screen recognition if it is 
on, seems to stop the cursor from jumping around in the app that I may be 
using. If it works it is a solution until Apple fixes the problem.

This skipping behavior is not unique to Kindle or Voice Dream Reader. I use NFB 
Newsline to read my local newspaper and some magazines. With Nfb Newsline, the 
VO cursor skips backwards. It happens in the Kindle app, too. Drives me nuts.

Good morning all.  I wanted to mention an odd behavior that is going on in
both Voice Dream Reader and the Kindle app and am wondering if any of you
who read with your braille display have noticed this lately.  I could be
reading to the end of a page especially in the Kindle app it jumps from the
end of the current page to somewhere on the next page.  If I'm listening to
the Kindle book, it reads perfectly with voiceOver.  If I'm using voiceDream
reader, the displays skip a line or two and you have to pan back to catch
the skipped line.  Needless to say, I'm happy for the book reader and the
Scratch Pad on the Orbit and Focus.

The AT Center would like to share with you this update from APH regarding 
the Mantis Q40 and Chameleon 20...

"We have identified connection issues for the Mantis Q40 and Chameleon 20 after 
upgrading to iOS 14.4. We recommend that you turn off automatic updates, and do 
not upgrade to 14.4. This is a regression introduced by Apple in this release. 
We alerted them to this issue during 14.4 beta testing, and we hope they will 
correct it in a possible 14.4.1 release. Stay tuned to your inbox for further 
updates.

Once upgraded to iOS 14.4, and as soon as users lock their iPad or iPhone with 
the Mantis or Chameleon connected, the braille display will not automatically 
reconnect once the device wakes back up. You can force it to reconnect by 
leaving the terminal and reconnecting from there, but then you won’t get 
braille. The only way to get braille back is to toggle Bluetooth on the iOS 
device, but the issue will happen again as soon as you lock your device or it 
goes to sleep.

To stop an iOS device from auto updating, do the following:

* Open the Settings app

* Activate the General option

* Activate the Software Update option

* Activate the Automatic Updates option

* Turn off both, “download iOS updates,” and “Install iOS updates.”

I can confirm that it is true for the APH products and that for several others

Here is some extremely important information for anyone who uses any Braille
display with their iDevice running IOS 14.4. I know this only talks about
the APH products but it is true for all Braille displays.

Dear Requestors,

 

The AT Center would like to share with you this update from APH
regarding the Mantis Q40 and Chameleon 20...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

"We have identified connection issues for the Mantis Q40 and Chameleon 20
after upgrading to iOS 14.4. We recommend that you turn off automatic
updates, and do not upgrade to 14.4. This is a regression introduced by
Apple in this release. We alerted them to this issue during 14.4 beta
testing, and we hope they will correct it in a possible 14.4.1 release. Stay
tuned to your inbox for further updates.

Once upgraded to iOS 14.4, and as soon as users lock their iPad or iPhone
with the Mantis or Chameleon connected, the braille display will not
automatically reconnect once the device wakes back up. You can force it to
reconnect by leaving the terminal and reconnecting from there, but then you
won't get braille. The only way to get braille back is to toggle Bluetooth
on the iOS device, but the issue will happen again as soon as you lock your
device or it goes to sleep.

To stop an iOS device from auto updating, do the following:

 

* Open the Settings app

* Activate the General option

* Activate the Software Update option

* Activate the Automatic Updates option

* Turn off both, "download iOS updates," and "Install iOS
updates."

Hi,

 

As you can see you have a number of choices. It really does depend on how much 
you want the device to do and what you can afford. Right now my favorite is a 
mantis Q40 from the American Printing House, APH. It has a qwerty keyboard and 
a 40 cell braille display. It also has some note taking capabilities, and you 
can read materials from Bookshare and NFB Newsline. The price if $2,495.

 

APH also has the Chameleon 20. It has a braille keyboard and a 20 cell display. 
I have not seen one, so I can’t provide any more information.

I use the BrailleSense Polaris and varry love it. I use the Smart Beetle also

has the best braille. what is the difference between the orbit reader

Hi, Dana,
I use my focus 14 braille display, and I love it, even though it doesn’t 
display much text. Another braille display I would like to recommend is the 
Brailliant 14. I have seen a Brailliant  braille display before, and it looked 
pretty good. I like the 14 sell braille displays because they are so small and 
compact. They don’t take up too much space, and I can fit my braille display 
into a pretty small bag.

I use the BrailleSense Polaris and varry love it. I use the Smart Beetle also 
for texting and send Whatsappmessages and happy with that. That's those my

Well, if just got a blunt reply from Orbit Research:

As of now Orbit reader, 20 Braille display will not be automatically connected 
with Mac Book on the log-on screen when we turn on the Mac Computers.”
So, I will carry on logging in with my Apple magic keyboard and then transfer

Space with low h, dots 2,3,6 toggles the input mode. Just keep pressing it to 
go through the modesIt has to be on, and connected. Did you say if you are 
connecting via USB or bluetooth?

VoiceOver comes on immediately my Mac starts up so my orbit reader should 
connect. The display is set to 6 dot UEB BY DEFAULT. Is there a Braille command 
to change to 8 dot and tgen back to 6 dot? And is such a command executed while 
the orbit reader 20 is turned on? Off? Or when I’ve opened the Menu?

VoiceOver has to be running before the braille display can do anything.On an 
iPhone, I can enter my passcode by switching to 8 dot brl.When does VO load on 
your Mac?If it is on before the password, I would think it would work. Perhaps 
time to call Apple?

Under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Typing, Typing feedback, set it to 
either characters, or characters and words and you should hear what you delete. 
 If you have it on nonthing or words, you will not hear each character deleted.

Yes, this also means you hear the character as you write, and sometimes that is 
misleading because if you use contracted braille, the immediate feedback may be 
the single character and not the contracted meaning, but it is easy to get used 
to it.

Using a braille display, if you attempt to erase characters, they aren’t read 
out as you do so. When using a braille display, this isn’t a big problem 
because you can physically see what you’re erasing. If using an Orbit Writer, 
this presents a huge annoyance because you don’t know what’s been erased. I’ve 
reported this to apple since august. 

Anyone have a work around for this? If not, I encourage you all to report this 
so it gets fixed. It makes using the Orbit Writer almost impossible.

The cored+4,5,6 only works if you have not edited/changed the order of the apps.
After a reboot, it works fine.
But Harry, you first said dots 4,5,6,7 I think you meant, space+4,5,6, right?
Anyway, it works for me in 14.2 until I have moved an app, then I have to 
reboot to get it to work as expected again.
This has been reported to Apple multiple times.

Under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Typing, Typing feedback, set it to 
either characters, or characters and words and you should hear what you delete. 
 If you have it on nonthing or words, you will not hear each character deleted.
Yes, this also means you hear the character as you write, and sometimes that is 
misleading because if you use contracted braille, the immediate feedback may be 
the single character and not the contracted meaning, but it is easy to get used 
to it.

Using a braille display, if you attempt to erase characters, they aren’t read 
out as you do so. When using a braille display, this isn’t a big problem 
because you can physically see what you’re erasing. If using an Orbit Writer, 
this presents a huge annoyance because you don’t know what’s been erased. I’ve 
reported this to apple since august.

Anyone have a work around for this? If not, I encourage you all to report this 
so it gets fixed. It makes using the Orbit Writer almost impossible.

Using a braille display, if you attempt to erase characters, they aren't
read out as you do so. When using a braille display, this isn't a big
problem because you can physically see what you're erasing. If using an

The Orbit Reader 40 will be out hopefully this year if the shipment issues 
caused partly by Covid get resolved.

No, as I said, hopefully it will be available before the end of the year, but 
time will tell.
The 20 plus costs $699.
The 40 will cost about $1399.

Pretty much all Bluetooth enabled braille displays will connect to all of those 
devices.

However, I find Bluetooth not very reliable on Windows.

Ubt, the braille displays will also be able to use a USB cable to connect.

I personally really like the Orbit Reader 20 Plus.

The Orbit Reader 40 will be out hopefully this year if the shipment issues 
caused partly by Covid get resolved.

Are there particular features you want, number of cells, etc.?

than in note-taking capability, 20 cell-display is just fine.
