RE: authenticator explanation
Excellent explanation thanks. Regards Anthony From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: 26 May 2021 18:52 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: authenticator explanation Authenticator apps are for accounts where you use 2-factor authentication. Typically after you put in your user name and password a code will be emailed or texted to you and you have to then enter this code. If you use an authenticator code, then the app will generate the code you use, of course you have to specify on whichever website, let's say on Dropbox, that you are using an authenticator app and you then have to set up the app for Dropbox which generally involves scanning a QR code on the computer screen. With Microsoft, Google and some others this approach goes a step further in that your iPhone itself along with the Microsoft Authenticator app (in the case of Microsoft) is used for authentication. If I log into my Outlook.com account from a computer which is not on the trusted computer list, a notification is sent to the authenticator app on my iPhone. It pops up just like any notification on my phone and when I tap on it the authenticator app opens, I am asked if I want to allow or reject the login attempt and if I tap allow it uses my Face Id for verification and, in some cases, it even asks you to confirm one of three numbers which would be displayed on your computer's screen. So, for example, it may say "Tap the number displayed" and then on the computer screen let's say it shows the number 48, on my iPhone screen I see 17, 48 and 63 so then I tap on 48 and at this point the app communicates to my login attempt that everything was authenticated and I get logged in. If you use 2-factor authentication for Google you can set it up to use the Google app on your iPhone for verification. It's currently probably one of the most secure methods because even if somebody had your phone they would not be able to authenticate the login because your Face Id or Touch Id would be needed. If you get the code sent to your iPhone via text message and as many do have it set up to show text messages on the lock screen, then as long as somebody had access to your phone they could log in and simply read the code which was sent on your lock screen. It's actually somewhat ironic that you can set up 2-factor verification for many accounts such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Dropbox etc. but most banks and credit card companies do not support or offer this. Explanation of the structure and architecture with in Apple iOS software and with in apps, Rita’s iDevice Advice
Hi All, I thought some of you might be interested in this article. From: Rita Howells Explanation of the structure and architecture with in Apple iOS software and with in apps: Rita’s iDevice Advice for March 8, 2021 The below information comes from the San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind. Contact information is at the bottom. Further down, is some visual description of the icons on an Apple iOS Device. Explanation of the structure and architecture in Apple iOS software and with in apps: App architecture: The top of the screen •Back button. The back button typically lives at or near the top-left corner of your screen. When pressed, it will take you back to the previous screen, category or menu. Visually, it is represented by a left-arrow. With Voiceover, you may hear something like, “Settings, back button.” Voiceover is reporting the back button as well as the previous category you will return to if this button is pressed. •Edit button. Edit buttons also live near the top-left corner of your screen in native iOS apps. The edit button lets you make changes to the information on the current screen. For example, finding your contact card, and then finding the Edit button will let you edit your own contact information. •Done button. When you are finished making changes to information, you can find the Done button near the top-left corner of your screen. This acts as a confirmation button to save the changes you’ve made. This may also appear as a Save button. •Cancel button. This button occurs at the top-left corner in many native iOS apps. It will cancel any changes you’ve made and close out the screen. The bottom of the screen Tab bars A tab bar is a set of two to five tabs that let you move to different sections of an app. It lies along the bottom of your screen from left to right. Visually, tabs are often translucent, and may or may not have a background tint to them. Let’s use the phone app as an example of what Voiceover may report when encountering a tab bar. •Tab bar announcement. As of iOS 14, Voiceover will announce that you have encountered a tab bar when focus moves to the bottom of the screen. •Tab name. Voiceover will announce the name of the tab you’ve encountered. For example, “Keypad, tab.” •Tab position. Voiceover will announce the position of the focused tab in relation to how many tabs there are. For example, “Keypad, tab, 4 of 5.” •Selection. When you double-tap a tab, its content will appear on the screen. Along with this, you will hear that your chosen tab is selected. For example, “Selected, keypad tab, 4 of 5.” Tool bars Just like a tab bar, a tool bar is a set of buttons that lies along the bottom of your screen from left to right. Tab bars let you move between sections of an app, whereas tool bars give you a list of actions to perform. An easy tool bar to explore appears in your Safari app, which serves as your internet browser. Let’s talk about what you will hear. •Tool bar announcement. As of iOS 14, Voiceover will announce that you have encountered a tool bar when focus moves to the bottom of the screen. •Button name. Tool bars contain buttons that can be pressed to perform actions. In Safari’s tool bar, you may hear, “Share, button.” Double-tapping this will bring up an iOS share sheet. The middle of the screen This is where the main content of your app will appear. Let’s talk about what you’ll find. •Items. The items in your app will be different depending on which app you’re working in. In the Voicemail tab of your Phone app, your items are voicemails. In your inbox of your Mail app, your items are emails. •Categories. These are sets of items or selectable options. Your Settings app contains a wealth of categories represented by buttons. •Actions. These are actions related to working with the individual item you’ve found. These actions can vary depending on which app you’re in. Voiceover will report to you that actions are available. This means you can swipe up or down to move through your list of actions, and double-tap to perform an action. Visually, lists of actions may appear after you perform a long-press on an item, or they may appear as a button with three dots that needs to be pressed. Scrolling through content There are a few ways to scroll through pages of content in an app. •Headings. Headings separate your app into sections for easier navigation. You can use the headings item in your rotor to move through these. Use your rotate gesture until you hear, “Headings.” Swipe up to move to the previous heading, and swipe down to move to the next heading. •Scroll gestures. Voiceover lets you scroll with three-finger swipe gestures. Swipe up with three fingers to scroll down, and swipe down with three fingers to scroll up. While scrolling, Voiceover will report your position and progress. You will hear things like, “Rows 1 through 10 of 50. Rows 10 through 20 of 50,” etc. •Indexes. An index is

In voice dream reader, double tap on Document at top left of screen. You can then select Export original document and then selectMail or select Export all text and then select Mail. From Voice Dream Scanner, you have to highlight the scan and then double tap on Save to save it first to voice dream reader before exporting it as above. I have also seen charging only USB cables (not lightning though); these came as a an included cable about 6 inches long for some device which required a USB charger, and I think the manufacturer saved a few pennies by creating this charging only cable, which I’m guessing did not include lines for data transmission. They frustrate me because I sometimes grab them by mistake, and then find my device won’t transfer data properly, until I recall that I owned a few of these charging only cables. Hello Everyone, Some of you may have been notified that your unposted messages to the list were recently deleted or rejected. RE: word only, subscription, and just explanation, thanks!
Oh, well since May I have been alone, even before that I was alone a lot but my former husband passed on in May so there is no one here to help except relatives that have absolutely no computer savvy, people who want to know 50 questions before they will help ad generally screw it up! I need a solution some time. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Friday, November 21, 2014 12:40 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: word only, subscription, and just explanation, thanks! Re: word only, subscription, and just explanation, thanks!
Richard and all, I did not go through the sign-up process for the Microsoft account since I was short on time. I am thinking of doing so though since it is free to edit and create basic Word documents with the Word app. When I looked over the sign-up screen, the directions for the audio CAPTCHA said to enter the words in any order. I've certainly dealt with CAPTCHA's that were very difficult to hear under the best of circumstances, but this one seemed to be fairly easy for me to hear and distinguish the words I needed to enter. Too many sites say, "If you're blind, call our customer service number during business hours," so it was good to see the account creation process in the Word app take a more proactive approach. If you have a hearing loss and/or have trouble distinguishing between syntheic speech voices, then you may have trouble. Hi Richard, Keep in mind that audio catpchas are usually totally different from visual captchas. The visual captcha may be 6 or 7 letters or letters and numbers whereas an audio captcha might ask you to enter a number of words or letters or numbers. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Friday, November 21, 2014 10:19 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: word only, subscription, and just explanation, thanks! It should be downloaded automatically. If not, you can go into Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver On -> Languages and Dialects and make sure enhanced is enabled and the voice will start downloading if it hasn't already been downloaded. So, let's start from sirie: The new and better Sirie voices are not Vocalizer Expressive voices. These are custom voices that Nuance or some other company makes a specially for Apple, I think it's Nuance because Apple always works with them on TTS related stuff. Now, let's move on to VoiceOver: In iOS 6, Apple used the Nuance Vocalizer for automotive version 5.5 platform for it's screen reader and Sirie. Since Nuance stopped supporting and developing Vocalizer for Automotive, and released Vocalizer Expressive, in iOS 7, Apple has swiched to using these voices for VoiceOver. Most of them sound the same as the previous generation of Vocalizer, such as Samantha Premium for example, they just read longer texts better. The Vocalizer Expressive platform contains some new and very expressive voices, but Apple decided to use the ones that wer already available, because they are still offerd with Vocalizer Expressive, or VE for short. Some other facts that thanks to them you can know it's the new Expressive version, are the bad compact voices, a specially Daniel, and the new voices for some languages such as Arabic, they have replaced Maged with Tarik for this language because Nuance doesn't offer Maged any more. Vocalizer Expressive has a Hebrew voice as well, so I hope Apple will add it soon too:) (Smile). Hope now you understand it better.. Yes guies, The commpact voices of Vocalizer Expressive are very bad. I recommend you to download the HQ voices. Re: Explanation to all of you who are confused about the iOS 7 TTS voices
Hi Adi: The new Arabic voice Tarik which replaced Majed is terrible, :-) Also, I tested the enhanced Australian voice but quickly went back to the compact voice as the enhanced did not sound as good. to me. Cheers, On 20/09/2013 00:22, Adi Kushnir wrote: Hi all, As one who uses the new Nuance Vocalizer Expressive voices to develop with them for other platforms, I wanna to explain to you all, what are the iOS 7 voices and which of them are being used when. Some other facts that thanks to them you can know it's the new Expressive version, are the bad compact voices, a specially Daniel, and the new voices for some languages such as Arabic, they have replaced Maged with Tarik for this language because Nuance doesn't offer Maged any more. Hi Chris, I agree about Compact Daniel; he sounds rather like the high-quality Nokia voice I had on the E7. The Australian and US voices aren't too bad, and I'm sure their HQ voices would sound fine. Re: Explanation to all of you who are confused about the iOS 7 TTS voices
Thank you for sharing. I absolutely cannot stand the compact British English voice. Sounds like Daniel with well I don't know, cinucitis maybe! Lol! But the one compact voice I do like is Irish English. Not really tried the Australian and U.S. English voices yet in compact mode. Re: Explanation Of Camera Dark In,Text Grabber
I stand corrected. Originally, the camera dock for the iPad was going to become a bridge device that would allow a digital camera attachment. I did not track such developments, and later iPads received a built-in camera. I also have Text Grabber, and assumed the camera dock portion of the button was for taking an image with the older iPad camera dock bridge that I understood was originally going to be developed. Re: Explanation Of Camera Dark In,Text Grabber
Hi David and Eileen, I'm puzzled by David's reply that the "Camera Dark" button in the TextGrabber app would support an external iPad camera for the original iPad. First of all, all the ways that I know of getting photos to the original iPad involve transferring images to the camera roll. If you use the Camera Connection kit that plugs in where the 30-pin charging or sync cable attaches, just below the Home button, you can either insert an SD card with camera images, if you are using the camera kit attachment that has a slotted opening to insert an SD card, or you can use the USB camera kit attachment that lets you plug in an unpowered USB device, like a card reader, into the USB plug at the other end. (At least, I used to be able to do this.) in either case, you can only transfer images, and only to the camera roll. You can't plug in an external camera device and control it through the camera kit plug. I've also read that are also apps that let you link to your iPhone through WiFi to display the camera contents on the screen of an iPad or iPod Touch, and then transfer the picture to the iPad or iPod Touch camera roll when the picture is taken. None of these apps are interactive, and you have to take the picture using the controls on the iPhone. You also only directly use the iPhone's camera app, and can't access any other apps that use the camera. In answer to Eileen's question about what the "camera dark" button option is on the TextGrabber screen, I think it is just the label for the image icon of a camera that sits in the middle of the "photo bttn" button on the main TextGrabber screen. If you slowly move your finger vertically up from the home button at the bottom of the iPhone screen, you'll hear both "camera dark" and "photo bttn" announced (but not at the same time). While touching the screen where VO says "camera dark", try moving your finger to the left or right, and then back in the opposite direction. You'll hear "photo bttn" announced when you are on either side of where "camera dark" is announced. You can double tap when focus is on either of these two button elements, and get th e same results with TextGrabber. Spatially, I thin that the "camera dark" is an icon that sits in the very center of the "photo bttn" button, but that tapping anywhere in the "photo bttn" region on the screen will take a picture. So if you flick to the button controls, you'll hear separate announcements for "photo bttn" and "camera dark"; and if you do a four-finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to move to the last element, you'll be focused on the "camera dark" button. But if you directly touch the bottom of the screen above the home button, you might hear VO announce either button, depending on whether you have touched near the center of the "photo bttn" button or closer to its edge. However, double tapping when focus is on either button gives the same results. The only confusing point is that if you flick through the controls, VO first announces the "photo bttn" button (in the bottom center of the screen), then "album" button (in the bottom right corner of the screen), then "camera dark" button (again in the bottom center of the screen, but occupying a more restricted region. Hope this explanation helps. just my thoughts on this, though. In my experience you can use either of the two button controls interchangeably, and you can also directly touch the bottom center of the screen to locate the button(s) for taking pictures with the camera, or you can directly touch the bottom right corner of the screen to locate the button for using the album to get pictures from the camera roll. RE: Looking for an explanation
Hi Donald, I think what your sister in law did is embed the picture into the email itself rather than sending it as an attachment. 47 K is actually not very big, if you were to attach a picture from even a 3 Megapixel camera without resizing it first it would be a couple of Megabites. I sometimes get these emails from sales reps who want to let us know about a product and they put the picture right into the email which means it's perfectly available to a sighted person, but you can't open or save it as you would if it were an attachment. Re: Looking for an explanation
Hi. It sounds like the picture was embedded in the message itself. If the message was sent as an html file, I think it can be done that way, which unfortunately makes the picture inaccessible to save or remove from the message itself for saving separately. -- Raul A. Re: Explanation on iPad please
Hi, Has anyone noticed that when writing an email, but sending it To multiple addresses, One gets stuck in the cc/B CC field? What has happened to me, is when I entered in three email addresses, and I go to find the subject field, I get stuck in this Cc/B cc field. The only way I can find the subject field, is to remove the third email address, then write my email, then before sending, I Anter the third email address, and all goes well. Is this a possible bug in iOS six? I have already tried closing the app switcher and removing apps from it and rebooting the phone. I'm running iOS six onan iPhone 4S. Thanks, Shane. Re: Explanation on iPad please
Hi Shane As far as I know, yes you do need to click on the tab to bring up the close tab button. There may be another way but I have not come across it. As for containers, these are major sections of the current UI. For example go to the Mail app and put the rotor option on containers. Now use the up and down flick to see how your focus is moved through the app. It is basically just another way of moving through an interface. Explanation on iPad please
Hi All, I've an iPad 3, and I need a little help on tabs. When Closing a tab, do you have to click on the tab before you can close it? And how can you see how many tabs are opened when in Safari? And when in the rotor what does containers mean? Also, does passbook come with the iPad when updating to iOS six? I can't seem to find It anywhere. Thanks, Shane.
