Re: Gmail on the iPhone and ipad

2019-09-11 Thread Øyvind Lode
Yes.
However, filters should be done serverside and not on the client.
I use Gmail on my phone and on multiple devices like Windows 10
laptops and Linux.
I always configure filters and labels serverside which means I always
have the same content in my Inbox and other folders/labels regardless
of which device I use to access my gmail.

On my iPhone I use the Gmail app and on PC I use the gmail web interface.
This email is composed using the web interface which works smoothly
with both Chrome and Firefox.

Gmail on the iPhone and ipad

2019-09-11 Thread Larry Smith
Hi list. I use gmail on my Mac air and iMac. I would like to start using it on
my iPhone and iPad. However, I don’t want all gmail going into the general
inbox. On the Mac, I have folders created where once mail comes in, it then get
move to their designated folders. I have a folder created for this list and
several other lists that I’m subscribed. My question is can I create folders on
the iPhone and iPad and have the designated list groups be automatically moved
to the designated folder? Thanks.

RE: synching gmail account with Iphone app

2017-09-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Susan,

I will keep my answers to your questions as brief as possible but please note
that they are, in no way, comprehensive or definitive.

First, generally speaking, mail clients download only the header information,
for each message, directly onto the device. This is assuming that you are
using the iMap protocol. More importantly, a web browser, such as Safari, is
not involved. Please remember that I said that this is generally, not always,
how it's done.

As to your second question, I suggest that you login to your Google account,
via a web browser, and cleanup any unwanted messages, folders/labels, from
there.

You can find the information on how best to clean up old messages from the web
but the broad strokes are as follows:

1.
Login to your gMail account.

2.
Open the archive folder/label.

3.
Move all of these messages into the Trash folder.

4.
Delete all of the messages in the trash folder.

Now, when next you open a mail client, such as iOS Mail, Outlook etc, you will
no longer have such a staggering amount of messages being downloaded.

Susan, I suggest that you begin your endeavor by thoroughly exploring the
settings area of your gMail account paying particular attention to the Trash
and Archive folder settings. For example, you can configure gMail to delete
trashed messages, automatically, after 30 days. You can also set the default
action, when a message is removed, to be trashed instead of being archive.

Take your time in exploring the gMail settings for there are a lot of
customization options available.

Good Luck,

Mark

Hi everyone,
I've been using the IPhone for nearly 3 years but only recently
decided to use the email app on my phone and have a few questions
regarding configuration. Firstly, are messages actually downloaded
when the email app opens or are they being retrieved from the cloud by
Safari or whatever? Secondly--and this is the main question--how can I
deal with the way gmail archives or stores its messages with regard to
my phone? As soon as I set up the account all the messages predictably
showed up from the gmail serverand started to multiply as they always
seem to do when I set up a new account ... the inbox on my PC now has
1036 messages in my inbox and my phone shows about 3000, same for my
Thunderbird client which I downloaded last night. Can someone tell me
the best way to clean up these old messages from my phone and/or my PC
so they don't download or duplicate from the gmail archives or
whatever they are. I can't figure out where to go in the gmail
settings to do this and it is both embarrassing and frustrating to
admit to this problem. Can I sanely accomplish this just from my phone
or must I resort to trying to find my seldom used BT keyboard, and
would it be worthwhile for me to try to use the gmail app for this or
other related email tasks? I'm lost, can you tell? Any help much
appreciated.

Subject: Gmail on my iPhone

I need to set up my e-mail on my iPhone and I have a question. The last time I
tried this on my older phone the signup process was easy but after I got it
going Gmail dumped down over 20 thousand messages from years past. On my PC I
use outlook for my Gmail and had it set not to save a copy of the message on
the server. I guess this didn’t work which resulted in the huge pile of
messages. Unless I’m mistaken there is no good way to delete large groups of
messages from the phone easily.

My question is, if I set up my Gmail again on this phone how can I prevent the
dumping of thousands of old messages onto it? Thanks.

RE: Gmail on my iPhone

2017-05-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Are you using gmail with POP or IMAP on your PC? If you are using POP you
really need to switch to IMAP and clean up your gmail folder so that going
forward your mail syncs properly. POP is fine with a single device, but if you
are using two or more devices it just does not work well. I know some people
say it is fine and you can set it up so one device, say your secondary device,
leaves messages on the server so that only your primary device downloads the
messages, but that still does not address the problem of truely syncing your
mail. If you use POP and you send a message on yoru phone or reply to one then
that message is on your iPhone in the sent items folder, but it will not sync
back to the server and to your PC as well, ultimately the message you replied
to will download to yoru PC, but it will not show that is was replied to.
I don't use gmail, but I believe you have to log into your gmail account online
and change it to IMAP there first, then set it up this way in Outlook and on
your iPhone.

Regards,
Sieghard

Changing e-mail from all messages to most recent 150 in Pop3 Gmail account on iPhone 6

2016-03-22 Thread Kevin Gibbs
guys,

I’m sorry if the subject line isn’t clear. It used to be that my Gmail
account, which is a Pop3 on my iPhone, used to only download the most recent
150 messages, or so. When I upgraded from my iPhone 4, running iOS 6.x, to my
iPhone 6, running iOS 8 and then 9, my Pop3 account changed so that tens of
thousands of e-mails were downloaded to my phone. Space is not an issue. but
I really wish I could change this so that it works the way my iPhone 4 used to.
that is, I only want 150 messages, or less, on my phone unless I choose to
“see more.” Can this be changed?

thanks,
Kevin

It then said varifying. I now have no contacts on my phone. What the hell

I see notes and calendars, but no contacts. Any ideas guys?
I have to get these contacts back on the phone.

Hey Jed,

I think what you need to do is try adding your gmail account again. This time
after it says verifying, you need to flick right and turn contacts on.

Hope this helps,

Re: Trouble setting up gmail on my iphone

2013-03-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
I actually take it one step further. I set up a normal Gmail account and only
enable mail and notes. Then I set up a second account as an exchange account
and give it the same Gmail username and password. In that second one I only
enable contacts and calendars. This contacts from the exchange set up is what I
use as my main contacts for my phone. The calendar is also my main calendar.
Doing it this way allows me to manage Google calendars and add other things
like US holidays and star dates and other interesting types of calendars.

I too use Exchange to manage my contacts, but I still enable my Google
Calendar through my Gmail account. I still seem to be able to manage my
Google Calendar this way and subscribe to other interesting calendars.
Your post makes me think I'm missing something though.

Hi there. I can't remember why it was that I fo8und that using calendars
from the exchange setup was better than from the normal gmail setup. It
might have been the ability to use shared calendars. I knew I should
have taken notes, smile.

RE: Gmail on the iPhone

2013-01-20 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi,

If you go to mail/contacts/calendars you can set up your Gmail account
there. Just add an account, then double tap on Gmail, then enter your
username and password.

I have the gmail app. Do I need to take that off in order to use the phones
