Re: NLS App
Remember that it has been coming out, in just a little while, for more than a year now. That demonstration version, in the podcast from CSUN, seemed to work pretty well. I can't imagine what the problem is. Learning Ally has had an app to play their books for months. Being that I can get a key to play Learning Ally books on my NLS player, I wonder why NLS couldn't have leased the right to play their books with the Learning Ally app until they could develop their own. We couldn't have done anything with NLS Braille books, but to be sure the NLS audio books aren't that much different from those from Learning Ally, it would been a great fund raiser for Learning Ally, and we would at least had something. They could have worked out some kind of way for NLS patrons to authorize it. But then, what do I know? Re: NLS App
I've been following this for a while, certainly more than a year, and the first I heard this app was being actively worked on and the first time I heard about a potential release date was at the beginning of this year when NLS said they were hoping/targeting to have something this summer. I definitely haven't been hearing that something was going to be coming out in a little while for over a year. Even though I've been paying attention to this, it's likely that I don't have the same sources others do. I'm not surprised the NLS may not reach their target of having something ready by the beginning of July. Both as a programmer and as a consumer, I know the pitfalls that can hit a development team, and I've seen applications be postponed. With the additional challenges the NLS has with legal issues and funding, I can imagine they have even more potentials for delays than other products. I'm looking forward for this NLS iPhone/Android app, but since my NLS reading needs are being met with other devices, and I don't expect I'll have to pay for this app, I'm willing to wait a bit longer and let the development team get it right the first time. It'll be out when it's out. It's like when will the 5-S be out. My wife and I gave each other 5-S's for Christmas last year or at least the money to pay for them. Needless to say, we still have our phone money but last Christmas it was pretty empty under the tree. Oh well. Re: NLS App
Maybe it just seems that it has been longer than since the beginning of the year that they have been talking about it. I wouldn't want them to release it if it has problems, but the one demonstrated in the CSUN podcast seemed to work quite well, perhaps she just didn't demonstrate the parts that didn't. I'll be glad to have it, whenever it comes out. Re: NLS App
I don't know when it is going to be released, but I do know that they said they *hoped* it would be ready for release around convention time. They didn't say it was a sure thing, not a should be, but just they hoped it would be ready. Anyhow, there were some bugs that I imagine they want to get out of the app first. They are damned either way. If they release it and there's a bug, tney'll get slammed. If they don't release it around convention time, tey'll get equally slammed. I almost wish they had not given a release date. Re: NLS app Podcast?
Guys, I just heard the blind access journal podcast on the new NLS app. I think it's fascinating. I did find it interesting to hear about reading braille on iOS devices. I assume this involves using a Bluetooth connected braille display? Also, I don't really understand the reference to 8 DOT space braille. I gather you have to have number eight DOT braille enabled but you still end up reading in six dots. Re: OT? Seniors, Smart Phones, and the NLS App
What I find interesting is how this thread has run off the rails. I do not recall anyone saying the NLS players should be replaced entirely by an app. I think the players serve a certain group of people just as the app would another. NLS would benefit in providing both if they could reclaim a number of the players in the field that could be replaced with an app. NLS could develop the app and backend processes for a reasonable cost and budgets are only going to get tighter for agencies. Re: OT? Seniors, Smart Phones, and the NLS App
I agree with what you're saying. BTW, it's hard to tell, since this thread was terminated in the attached message, but the following was said in this thread: I am not doubting it will happen at some point in the future. Really and truly if the feds were smart they would get an iOS and Android application soon and stop producing those expensive stand alone players. I am sure this would result in a cost savings for them. Wait nevermind cost savings and feds. So I'm not sure if this thread went off the rails or not, and someone did certainly propose stopping the production of the NLS book players and replacing them with an IOS/Android app. That being said, I think this point has been sufficiently addressed by this point. BTW, I wouldn't question the intelligence of the people working for NLS and in particular in the digital Talking Book program. They have a varied demographic they have to address, a small and shrinking budget to work with and a publishing industry they need to stay on good terms with. I think this is a more challenging and more complicated program than some realize. On 27/08/12 04:30, Scott Howell wrote: What I find interesting is how this thread has run off the rails. RE: OT? Seniors, Smart Phones, and the NLS App
I was going to stay out of this thread, but as someone who works in the rehabilitation field I think too many people are making rather sweeping generalizations. I have clients in their 80's happily using iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. I have clients in their 40's who cannot grasp the concept of a touch screen and stick with designated blindness related devices. There are always going to be a segment of the population who can't use smart phones, and there are going to be people who simply prefer not to, but that has nothing to do with age. If anyone has something to say about my comments, please write me directly so we can take this thread off list. richard.turne...@gmail.com Richard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Hi I to agree with what you are saying as well. Hear in Canada the cnib is experimenting with a pilot project where in stead of sending out there books on cd and then destroying the cd's once you send them back to them and making them in to filler for seats in cars and dash boards they will in stead make downloading books available. I my self am participating in a study for this. they sent me a plextalk player and it has a usb slot a cd slot and a sd card slot. the only thing it doesn't have is the ability to transfer the books that are stored on to it to any of these other platforms like sd cards and memory sticks. I have brought this point up in my questionnaire at the end of the study since I feel that this would be a good feature to have on the players. from Mich. - Original Message - From: Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, August 27, 2012 5:45 AM Subject: Re: OT? Re: OT? Seniors, Smart Phones, and the NLS App
I may be missing your point, but in the US we already have the ability to download digital talking books from the BARD site. We can then copy these books onto a blank cartridge that goes into the player or a USB stick, which you can also use in the player. This is also how you get the books onto another device, like the booksense, and presumably the iPhone, once we have an iPhone app for talking books. Re: OT? Seniors, Smart Phones, and the NLS App
The simple truth in the field of rehabilitation and OT is that no one solution will fit any one set of consumers, especially not when you divide them into age brackets. It is certainly true that fewer older adults prefer iDevices, but there are quite a number of them who really enjoy using them. particularly the iPad for those with low vision. No 2 consumers are exactly alike, and treating them as such will only lead to the possibility of improper service delivery and perhaps someone missing out on something they could have benifited from. To bring this back on topic, as we're about as far off topic as you can get, there are external devices which also assist in the use of iPhones and such. Both bluetooth keyboards, and in some cases, braille displays, can enhance a user's interactivity and productivity with these devices. So even saying that someone who has spacial issues cannot learn to use an iPhone is not necissarily true. Certainly, cognative issues can play into things, and that's where we would again stray off topic if I expanded on this point. RE: Update on NLS App
Maybe it's just me, but I don't know how comfortable it'll be to listen to NLS books on an iDevice. There's something about hardware, the ability to physically press buttons to navigate that just seems more convenient than swiping around a touch screen to pause, jump segments, etc. Yes, I know there are headphones, but it'd be nice not to have to rely on those to quickly move about without them. RE: Update on NLS App
For some reason, my victor stream quit working recently. Rather than pay to get it fixed, I have decided to see what the status of the IOS app is around convention time. If something is coming out that is free or low cost, I'd rather by that than spend the outrageous fees human ware charges to look at Victor Streams simply to determine how much the repair will cost. The stream has better battery life, but I'm thinking that given the versatility of the IPHONE, it might not be worth getting the stream fixed. Re: Update on NLS App
I enjoy Read to Go and Blio and would deffinitely read nls books on the I Phone. Even though battery life is shorter, I bought a Phonesuit Elite case that gives at least another full charge to the I Phone battery, and that's good enough for me! Just my own speculation here, but I would think that they would have something to show at the summer conventions, even if it wasn't out by that point. Time will tell though.
