Thanks for that one. I knew about older devices such as Braille Sense,
but I hadn't realised this was the case with Thunderbird (which I've
just started to use) and Outlook. That's probably why I've had to sign
in a time or two, but now everything seems stable enough!

Well, I have two phones, having just upgraded from a 4S to a 6S,
and still use the 4S on occasions. I have the account on both phones. I
did restore from that previous backup, by the way, am using IMAP and
have had some of the problems with GMAIL that others have recently
experienced, which I don't put down to having the account on two phones.
I also have the account on my computer and Braille Sense.

I do get quite a lot of repeats though and am working on trying to
eliminate those, so any good ideas welcome.

I haven't noticed this problem with Gmail on any of my devices. Since
upgrading to IOS 9, if I have the Mail app running and I shutdown my
phone, when I bring it back up, I'll get an unable to connect message in
the Mail app. If I close the Mail app and reopen it, the message goes
away. This may not be what you're seeing, but to me, it seems like an
issue with the Mail app in IOS 9.

RE: problem with gmail

2015-10-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Gmail uses IMAP which means it simply syncs whichever devie you use it on to
your online account and you can do this with 100 devices if you like, phones,
computers, tablets etc.
My guess is that your friend is not entering something correctly, maybe he or
she is missing something with the password, all it takes is one mistake like a
lower case letter instead of an upper case letter or vice versa and it won't
work. Also, in case he or she has 2-step verification turned on this would
require additional verification before it works.

Re: problem with gmail

2015-10-20 Thread Shai
Hello Terrie,
Do you have more than one gmail account set up in the mail app on your
phone? If so, do you have them both set to fetch at a specific
interval? This was my set up since I have one gmail account for home
and another for school. I had these both fetching at 15 minute
intervals and I noticed that when entering the mail app I would
receive messages of cannot get mail which would happen after a couple
of weeks or so. Similar to you, I had to delete and recreate the
offending account to stop this message from appearing. Setting one of
these to manual fetch resulted in my not getting these messages any
longer.
I hope that this helps in your situation

RE: problem with gmail

2015-10-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Terrie,

I can tell you that Google has been experiencing problems with its servers for
the last couple of weeks or so, I have encountered the same error messages in
Outlook, on my Windows computers, on my Android devices, on my Macs, and on my
Windows phones. I have herd the same complaints from friends of mine all
across the United States.

It appears to be a kind of rolling outage. That is to say, it affects various
areas at different times.

For me, here in southern California, the problem seems to have gotten better
over the last week or so.

Re: problem with gmail

2015-10-20 Thread Shai
Hi Mark,
Thank you for pointing this out. I did not even realize that gmail was
having problems with its servers. I thought that this message had been
because I had two accounts that were fetching on my iPhone and that
the server was timing out.
Now that you mentioned this, I might try fetching both accounts again
and see if I experience this problem.

Re: problem with gmail

2015-10-20 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I haven't noticed this problem with Gmail on any of my devices. Since
upgrading to IOS 9, if I have the Mail app running and I shutdown my
phone, when I bring it back up, I'll get an unable to connect message in
the Mail app. If I close the Mail app and reopen it, the message goes
away. This may not be what you're seeing, but to me, it seems like an
issue with the Mail app in IOS 9.

You need to delete your Gmail account and then go back in and reset it up but
is there a glitch with the last update if it's on your iOS phone so I had to do
that with my Gmail account because it was just really messed up so hope this
helps because I messed with it for several weeks from the time the last iOS

Re: Having problem with Gmail

2015-05-01 Thread Tom Lange
Hi. I have a couple of suggestions. First, if you delete and recreate the
account on the Mac or phone, it should default to IMAP and you won't or
shouldn't have to worry about the IMAP and SMTP server names and port numbers:
those are set for you and it should just work. If not, the problem may be with
GMail's security settings. If that's the case, the evidence will be quite
clear when you log onto the account using the web page. You'll notice a
message or two talking about unauthorized access to the account and in the
message you'll find a link to a page where you can tweak the security settings.
It seems that some commonly-used mail clients use a lower security level and
GMail's security settings are too high to allow access to the account for
sending and receiving. The solution, or at least the gist of it: on the web,
open account settings, and allow access by less secure devices. Once you do
this, your mail clients should work just fine. I've had to do this for PC's
and laptops running Microsoft Outlook 2010 and/or 2013, and for students of
mine who were trying to use BrailleNote Apex note-takers to access their GMail
servers for sending and receiving. Oddly enough, although the web page talks
about less secure clients on mobile devices, including iPhones, I haven't had
this issue on any of my iPhones, including my 4, 5s and 6. Maybe I just got
lucky, but I doubt it since I've set up mail accounts on my girlfriend's phone
and several students' iPhones, too.
