Using a VPN with voiceover

2019-01-29 Thread rhs
Hi,

How does using VoiceOver affect choosing and using a VPN? Besides the
questions anyone must answer when choosing a VPN service, are there additional
considerations for voiceover users?

Thanks.

RE: Seeing AI alternative for iPad?

2019-01-29 Thread Brian K. Lingard
Dear Evan & List:

If Seeing AI is flagged as an IPhone-only App, it will not download on an IPad
or other Apple device. This flag may be new, would think it is set when App is
placed in the App Store.
Suppose IOS can goof at times and download an App onto a device it should not
be downloaded to.

I haven't been on it recently, but I've used the Seeing AI app on my iPad Mini
many times and it's worked great.
Unless they've changed something since the last time I've used it, I would
think it should work on your iPad.

Dear all
To my disappointment I found today that there is no iPad version for a Seeing
AI app. Has anyone tried any other app which works on iPad and does currency
recognition and if possible barcode?
I also want to use this opportunity to thank Richard for responding to my
previous question Best regards

RE: Using a VPN with voiceover

2019-01-29 Thread Alan Lemly
You should make sure that any companion app that works with the VPN service you
choose is accessible to Voiceover. I expect most services have their own apps.
I use the Tunnel Bear VPN service and found it competitive and accessible and
their support was responsive when I first contacted them months ago. You can
read about it here:

Braille: Orbit Reader 20 update

2019-01-29 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
This week I updated the firmware on my orbit Reader 20 to the latest version
01.01.57. And now there are bugs - are others using it finding this too?
When I want to create a capital letter, tapping dot 6 no longer is recognised
to initiate a capital letter. Nothing happens when dot 6 is pressed.
When I want to write a number, tapping dots 3 4 5 6 is not recognised and
nothing happens.
This means that i cannot use the orbit reader now to write capital letters or
numbers! Am I missing something or is there a workaround?
Thankd

I was actually glad to hear about the era update. Right now, I cannot afford to
use this service. If my situation should change, I would definitely consider
using this service. I am actually glad to hear about any apps that come out and
how accessible they might be.

Hello,

I’ve noticed, that when using the Facebook app on the iPhone, I tend to get a
lot of “stories”. It will have a friend’s name and will say something about
their unread or unseen story. What is that all about? I see their posts.
And, more and more, as I’m scrolling through, I just get these “unread story”
deals that I don’t understand.

I don’t see any of this when I’m on my computer and thought perhaps some of you
might know what’s going on.

That is not true. You simply have to change the filter in the app store search

Hi Marie,

I haven't decided yet, but I don't think maturity has anything to do with
it, it comes down to principle.
What really surprises me is that Mark posted what he did and never provided
any further explanation or responded to any of the dozens of posts. He also
didn't close the topic, but he posted two articles which would indicate that
it's not a matter of him not having caught up with the list. I for one would
appreciate a post from him regardless whether it's one where he maintains
his position or one where he clarifies whether he has changed his opinion
regarding this based on what was said. Just ignoring this doesn't help in
making it clear whether in future it is OK to post anything which has to do
with a service rather than directly with what button to tap in an app.

I agree that Aira while having come up at various times before is
certainly not in everybody's face all the time. If you, Andy, are
subscribe to so many lists and Podcasts where it is discussed you
obviously have a great deal of spare time for all this. I can hardly
keep up with the Viphone, Jaws and Windows 10 groups which I am
subscribed to and rarely do I hear about Aira. In fact, it's on my
list of things to do to find out more about what Aira is offering in
Canada.

I certainly did not consider Jonathan's post inappropriate in any way
and find it regrettable that Mark apparently judged it to be so. I
don't think in a case like Aira you can separate the app from the
service. There are many examples on this list where services are
discussed. People ask questions about Apple Music or Netflix and not
always is the question strictly about the Music app or the Netflix app
but about the service in

Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-29 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
I can no longer type capital letters nor numbers in the Mail app when composing
emails. I am running iOS 12.1.3 on iPhone XS and an Orbit Reader 20 which I
recently updated to firmware version 01.01.57. Capital letters and numbers work
fine in Notes, Pages, Contacts and Calendar but not in the Mail app nor in the
Safari search bar. Because I updated both iOS and the Orbit firmware very
recently, I have no idea where the fault lies. Does anyone have such problems
or solutions?

Re: Braille input problem in Mail app

2019-01-29 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
This is just a wild guess, but it may be possible that you inadvertently issued
some command from your Orbit Reader that changed your Braille input. I did that
once a long time ago and it caused me all kinds of trouble when trying to do
things like log into my banking app. For that reason I switched to eight-dot
Computer Braille and left it that way. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility
> Voiceover > Braille. Check to see what Braille Input is set to; perhaps you
accidentally switched it to eight-dot Computer Braille. If you did, switch it
back to either uncontracted or contracted six-dot, whichever you prefer. Just a
thought: let us know what happens. Oh, and if anybody knows what command you
use to switch Braille input on the fly, please post it here so that I can make
a note of it.
Thanks,
Tom

RE: Facebook stories??

2019-01-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This is one of these questions where a Google search for “What are Facebook
Stories” provides you with tons of search results from articles, a Wikipedia
entry and Youtube videos explaining how to create them, save them and so on.
The main thing to take away from all of this is that for blind people they are
pretty useless since they are purely visual and are temporary, here is what I
found on Wikipedia:

Facebook Stories are short user-generated photo or video collections that can
be uploaded to the user's Facebook.
Facebook Stories were created on March 28, 2017. They are considered to be a
second news feed for the social media website.
It is focused around Facebook’s in-app camera which allows users to use fun
filters and Snapchat-like lenses to their content as well as add visual
geolocation tags to their photos and videos. The content is able to be posted
publicly on the Facebook app for only 24 hours or can be sent as a direct
message to a Facebook friend.
"As people mostly post photos and videos, Stories is the way they’re going to
want to do it,” says Facebook Camera product manager Connor Hayes, noting
Facebook’s shift away from text status updates after 10 years as its primary
sharing option.
“Obviously we’ve seen this doing very well in other apps. Snapchat has really

Subject: Facebook stories??

RE: What do I do to delete phone calls, incoming and outgoing?

2019-01-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Make sure the rotor is set to Actions and then flick either up or down when you
are in the Recent Call list and Voiceover will say "Delete", double tap on that
and the call will be deleted from the log.
You can also tap "Edit" at the top right of the screen, once you do then there
will be a "Clear" button on the top left, double tap it and confirm and your
call log will be cleared completely.

This is one thing I’ve been interested to know as far as what if any training
Aira agents have had for scenarios where the person using the service may find
themselves in. Be it outright danger or in situations that perhaps don’t rise
to this level, but may present uncomfortable issues. Like what are their
policies for handling such matters? What is their obligation say if while
person X is using Aira and the agent sees someone in the foreground approaching
them or taking a particular interest in what they’re doing and so on? If
they’re a victim of a crime while using Aira?

Considering that most blind people are unemployed, and that the average

income of blind folks is well below that of those who are not blind, aiRa

will only be feasible for a minority of blind people, thus making services

like Be My Eyes, and platforms like MS Seeing AI a welcome alternative.

I was able to find the app after changing to iPhone apps through filters. I

works. It should be searchable through App Store without filters.

I am certainly no expert, but I have been using both Lyft and Uber for the last
year and absolutely love them. I have found the drivers friendly, polite and
very helpful and never felt the least uncomfortable. Some are, of course better
than others but in all the many rides I have taken, I have only had two drivers
who got less than a five star rating from me.
I realize the experiences will very depending on where you are located but if

You mentioned stranger danger. This is a social issue for me that sometimes
keeps me from asking for help.I’ve seen AIRA demonstrated at various NFB state
and national conventions I’ve attended, but the cost is a limiting factor for
me now. I have Be My Eyes on my phone but haven’t used it out of the issue of
dealing with someone I don’t know, and admit even the name of the app reminds
me squarely of my limitations. I haven’t even learned how tou use Facetime,

The stranger issue has kept me from trying Uber and Lyft, even though I have

Hi Andy,

I totally agree as well.

How many blind people can afford $200.00 or more a month to get unlimited
service to have an entire play at the theater described for them.

The people who are so passionate about this service, don’t realize that the
blind are 70 percent unemployed.

What about those people?

I went to the Ohio State University and went everywhere I wanted to go with my
good, old cane, and I do so today.

Technology is just getting out of hand, I think.

It is making some people lazy.

Also, why are blind people alone all of the time.

I hear so many blind people say that they are alone here and there, and they
need this service.

I always have people around everywhere I go , practically.

How many sighted people go out and roam around alone.

Another thing this brings up, is that blind people need to be with sighted
people, instead of using a service like this.

We are becoming a society where everyone wants to do everything for him or her
self, instead of relying on each other.

Many cultures would not think of doing so many things alone like we do in the
west, and I assume Australia

And New Zealand.

Mexicans love to live with their extended family.

They would not live alone if their life depended on it.

Technology like this AIRA, are just causing people to be alone more with their
technology.

When I ride the bus, I am always talking to people.

I do not even want to get on my phone!

I love talking to strangers the whole time I am out, , not on a device.

Thanks for putting up with my little rant.

Sometimes, I think the blind were better off, when they had to get a reader to
read everything to them, and they had to remember it or take good Braille

2019-01-29 Thread Andy Baracco
Most of my lyft rides have gone well, but last week a driver refused to take us
because of my wife's walker. He canceled the ride and we were charged $5 for a
no show even though we were, in fact, in the car and he asked us to get out.
Fortunately, I was able to get the charge reversed. Two days later we had a
driver pull up, and when she saw my white cane and my wife's support cane, she
took off. The service is great, but still has some work to be done.

I could care less what Mark says 1 way or another. I think this whole damned
thing was blown out of proportion by a bunch of whining people. I have about
worn my finger out with the delete key and I really don't care who goes or who
stays.
I really think it is about time people grew up.
I'm so tired of being preached to about is thing or that thing and how to act
as a blind person. all of you stop thinking you are unique or think all blind
people are unique. as individuals we are unique...we have our own thoughts on
what to do and how to do it.
I am on lists to learn things I want to know about. We all have bad days and
say things we wish could be taken back...all of us...I don't care if your name
is Mark or Seighardt or Jonathan or David. For goodness sake people let this
thing go and get back to assisting others with questions and answers about
whatever technological topic is up at the time on whatever list you are on at
the time.
I admit I have never been on a list with sighted people, but I truly hope that
this childish behavior is limited to the a small portion of the blind community.
try the serenity prayer people!

I have to agree with you on this and also wonder why Mark has not responded in
any way. I think we would all appreciate some kind of clarification on the
issue.

Hi Marie,

I haven't decided yet, but I don't think maturity has anything to do with it,
it comes down to principle.
What really surprises me is that Mark posted what he did and never provided any
further explanation or responded to any of the dozens of posts. He also didn't
close the topic, but he posted two articles which would indicate that it's not
a matter of him not having caught up with the list. I for one would appreciate
a post from him regardless whether it's one where he maintains his position or
one where he clarifies whether he has changed his opinion regarding this based
on what was said. Just ignoring this doesn't help in making it clear whether in
future it is OK to post anything which has to do with a service rather than
directly with what button to tap in an app.

Regards,
Sieghard

I would hope that people like Sieghard and Richard are too mature to leave the
list over a disagreement such as this one. They are both a wonderful source of
assistance on all the uses of our IO devices.

Hey Carolyn. Me too. I've been here for quite a while and love this list. We

When Sending a Group Message, People with Androids Not Receiving It

2019-01-29 Thread sherrywells1157
Hello all,

Another problem has cropped up since updating my IPhone 5s to the latest
version of IOS. When I send a group message, only those with IPhones
receive it. Those with Androids get nothing although they get all the
responses to my group message from others. I am able to send an individual
text to someone with an Android successfully; it is only group messages that
are a problem. I checked settings, messages & send with SMS is on. There
is a group option in message settings. It is on. I get no error messages
or no indication that my message was not received by all. Is there some
other setting somewhere I need to change? Of course this was working fine
before I upgraded IOS.

Thanks,
Sherry Wells
