question regarding the iCloud backup?

2013-03-31 Thread E V
Hello,

When I attempt to backup my iPhone 5 to the iCloud, I am told that it
failed. This has happened over and over again despite my efforts to limit
what is actually backed up. Do members pay for additional iCloud service,
or do you use alternative methods for backing up your iPhone? I would
appreciate your help. Thank you.

RE: question regarding the iCloud backup?

2013-04-02 Thread E V
Hello Marcy,

My backup reports that the last backup failed and lets me know that the last
backup was on February 6, 2013 at 12:51 AM. I am pretty frustrated with
this backup issue. Sieghard reported that there is a way to delete the
content of a previous backup, but the only delete that I see is delete the
account. Any additional light on this issue would be helpful. Also, if a
person installs the dropbox app, is one able to backup to the dropbox?

For the automatic backup to occur, your device must be plugged into power
and locked.

What I have tried to do is use the ITunes application to search for the apps
I am looking for without success to find them I ended up going to either
itunes.com or the providers website to find the app. I suspect this is
neither a simple or smart way to do this How is it done if it can be done
through the app?

Hello,

I am not Anne. I just purchased the unit. It looks as if you have a
bunchof questions about the device and most of your questions can be
answered at

You can purchase the pro version which uses a 9 volt battery which is not
included. You can also acquire an adapter which can be used with the unit.
These features are not available with the standard model.

Hallo the list,

I just received my StandScan, which is a box very similar to the
ScanBox, but which vaunts better lighting. Physically, StandScan is just
about the same as the ScanBox, but the connection for the battery, plus the
presenced of an on/off switch, immediately, gives the feeling of something
better thought out. There is also a cable to plug in at the mains, but this
being round pinned, i will have to look out an adapter before I can comment
on the brightness of the lighting whilst on manins power. The hole for the
camera to see through is larger than that of the SB and is, therefore, a
little easier to position the phone, even without my handy markers for the
phone. It is midday here, though I did use the lights that are built into
the StandScan, wantying to ascertain how well, using the lights in all
conditions, just how well the things works. So, a little later, I will try
it out in twilight and then darkness.

For now, I am impressed. Below is half of a page of a newspaper. I just
folded the whole newspaper in half and then in half again to make it fit
into the box. I sort of flattened it a bit, but not much, and I didn't hold
it while the shot was taken, so the section of the page was not entirely
flat. I mention this because it, obviously, affects the outcome.
Nevertheless, I am delighted with the results. I very rarely get good
results when trying to read bits of newspapers and since the appearance of
the Newspaper App, I am only doing it to demonstrate the StandScan and
Prizmo.

If you want to know more about this little toy, please free to ask, on
or off list. But, probably, it will be better to wait until i have tried it
out in less godd lighting conditions.

Happy for now, Sandy.

she met Ted Hughes in 1956, the life of the pushy Amez4~ girl btornirlg with

poetic ambition but also fixed on marriage and babies was more than two
thirds over. Admittedly, the startling incantatory tirades for which she is
best known were not written until the last few months of her life, and it
seems that the events of those months were somehow necessary to their
excavation.
But The Bell]ar (1963), the novel that first appeared just before her death,

belongs to a younger self: it teUsthe story of Plath's previous breakdown
and suicide attempt during her time at Smith College, Massachusetts, two
years before she met Hughes. Of course the marriage is fascinating, but that

is partly because of who Plath was when it began, a story that too easily
disappears in the fascination of who she became when it ended.
Andrew Wilson does not disturb more s~/~ and uncect~ i~]f~ttla.
Her search for identify becomes ours as we move between the iournals,
letters and stories she submitted to magazines during school and college
Gears. Trying things out on paper ecame her way of thinking about the world;

she made no distinction between her quest for experience and her vocation as

a writer. The question of women and wild oats obsessed her. So did Nietzsche

and his ideas about "voluntary death" and, later, Dostoevsky and his dochfne

of the double.
Good grades came easily but Plath was determined to learn from life as well
as books. From the age of 14, she was boy-mad yet consistently baffling to
them. "I think I made you up inside my head" is the repeated line in the
vilianelle from which Wilson takes his title, and it becomes startlingly apt

as boyfriend after boyfriend is wheeled on, only to reveal his insufficiency

for the role in which Hath has cast him. Men were damned ff they did and
damned if they didn't - envied for their sexual nee am, despised for not
sharing it.
She seems never to have stepped out with one without fixing on another.
"Fusion and violation of actual circumstance," scribbled her mother Aurelia
Plath on the typescript of "The Disquieting Muses", a poem that portrays a
monster mother pushing her daughter into ballet and piano lessons. Wilson
defends the "emotional truth" of the poem in that instance, but he goes on
to make the same non-point in his discussion of The Bell]ar, which has
always been read as closely autobiographical. Wilson nitpieks - this one

Keep in mind that this stand scan is shipping from Hongkong. The shipping
notice indicated that it was being shipped by Hongkong post and so the

Hello,

For those of you who live in the United States, you can plug-in your
Hongkong post tracking number in to the USPS website and get data on your
package. With regard to the USPS website, your results are shown deep into
the page, you can navigate to it quickly by getting your browser to show you
a heading 1. It is USPS who is the US carrier. All the best.

RE: Where's the Assistive Touch icon?

2013-08-10 Thread E V
Hello Gerardo,

I use the Assistive Touch all the time. When you first activate it, it puts
it on the left hand side of the home screen above the half way point. To a
sighted person, it has the appearance of being a transparent icon, yet
visible. I will drag the Assistive Touch icon to a more convenient place
such as below the earpiece, or you could drag it to the area right above the
start button.

this can be done? Thanks for info.

Hello Paul,

There are two different ways by which you can track your Scan Stand, by
going to HongKong Post, and or by going to the US Post Office. Hong Kong
post will eventually tender your parcel to the US Post Office.

HongKong Post http://www.hongkongpost.hk/eng/tracking/index.htm

Us Post Office http://www.usps.com

Please note that you must have your tracking number.

I had put some raised locater dots on my old one which worked well for me

RE: BlindSquare - price and a question

2013-05-12 Thread E V
Hello Sieghard,

The price is $19.99. I just finished getting through half of a podcast, and
in listening, it appeared to me that the app was more about leveling the
playing field when it comes to information such as coffee shops, pizzas,
etc. Here is a link from AppleVis which appears to be very exhaustive on
the subject of Blind Square.

Subject: BlindSquare - price and a question

Hello List,

I was thinking of getting BlindSquare even though once Sendero's Seeing Eye
app comes out it might become redundant. Anyhow, I for some reason thought
it was $9.99, but when I just checked on the Apple Store it says it is
$19.99. While BlindSquare does a bit more than Sendero LookAround, I
nonetheless find it interesting that I don't ever remember hearing people
complain about the price considering the fuss many folks made when Sendero
LookAround was released and priced at $4.99.

Anyhow, one thing I was wondering is when Blindsquare tells you about
intersections. Does it announce the cross street just before you get to it?
Also, Let's say I get out of a bus and I want to know what the cross streets
are, will it tell me if the nearest cross street is ahead or behind and
would it tell you how far away it is?

Regards,

Sieghard

dialing a secondary number, and even a third number on the iPhone?

2013-05-16 Thread E V
Hi,

How does one dial a secondary number, and even a tertiary number on there
iPhone 5? For example, I call into my office, then I have to dial a numeric
code, and then a separate PIN. I would be interested in knowing the method
for doing this. Thank you.

RE: Assistive Touch Being Intrusive

2013-05-21 Thread E V
Hi,

I use assistive Touch all the time. Here is how I use it. First of all, I
moved the icon out of the way to an area just below the iPhone earpiece.
Rather than relying on the home key for every thing, I activate the Touch
Menu and click on home, which takes me to the home screen. I also use it to
get to the App Switcher by activating the Touch Menu and clicking on Device,
then on More, then on MultiTasking which brings me to the App Switcher.
That is how I use it, you don't have to do that if you don't want.

I accidentally turned on assistive touch and now, it appears in the upper
left corner of the phone, no matter what I do. Also, it prevents me from
accessing any type of settings. When I go to settings on my I phone 5, that
assistive touch menu comes up and there's no way I can get out of it. Any
thoughts?

Bill,

The default calculator is typically located on your home screen on page 2.
The page can vary depending on the amount of new apps you have. It is
located in the utilities folder.

The default calculator is completely accessible.
You might try iConvert free for a conversion utility.
If you have Siri, Siri can help with conversions.

RE: Tap Tap See

2013-02-19 Thread E V
Hello Debbie,

To make Tap TapSee work for you, lets try putting a money bill if you live
in the United States. Place the bill on a solid surface. Avoid putting it
on a glass table. If you are using a glass table, then put a blank piece of
paper on your surface, and put the bill denomination right in the middle of
your piece of blank paper. Place the back side of your phone on the bill,
and raise your phone about 10 inches. Lift the phone straight up. Take
your picture. The result is sent to a database for processing and is
announced to you with voice over within 4 seconds or so. The text is not on
your screen, so you cannot review it with your finger, or by swiping. The
beeps which you hear are simply progress indicators to help you determine
that something is being processed. If you don't succeed at first, then keep
trying with your money denomination. Once you do this simple step, then you
will get the confidence to try other items. All the best.

HI all,

I've got the latest version of Tap Tap See and it beeps every so often which
I thought was a new feature to possibly help with focusing the camera.
However, it beeps after I hear the picture being taken and I'm confused
about this. can someone explain this a little better? Does the beeping
before I take the picture mean that the camera is or is not focusing on
something? Does the beep after the picture is taken mean it's ready to take
another picture?

Thanks!

RE: Purchasing the Big Jambox?

2013-02-21 Thread E V
Hello Joseph,

The big Jambox is a wonderful device. I would recommend it for anyone. But
to address your question, I would say that to get the most out of your
device,

1 Navigate to
Http://www.jawbone.com
and sign up for MyTalk. You must be signed up in order for you to get
updates for
your Jambox. While you are there, please connect your Jawbone to your
computer via
the USB cable.
2 While you are at the Jawbone page, download the updater and save it to a
familiar
folder on your computer, such as a Download folder.
3 Install the updater on your computer, it is a regular installable
program.
4 After the updater has been installed, it will put an icon on your desktop
called
Jawbone Updater.
5 Please launch the desktop applet entitled Jawbone Updater, and it will
connect
both you and your device to the Jawbone web page.
6 Give it a couple of minutes, and then begin navigating the web page and
you will
either see updates for your device, or there is no updates for your device.
If no
updates, then your device is up-to-date.

To the subject whether you can independently choose some of the options for
your device, you are going to need help. The feature that I recommend is
something called party mode, I believe. Other than that, the device is
extremely easy to use with voice prompts. All the best.

Hi,

I have gone through the IPhone user guide and the accessibility guide.

I can't find info on how to do things like copying and pasting from app to
app or selecting text etc.

Where is this found?

I know by now I should have this down but just not the case.

Thanks.

EB, there is no missed call in the phone app. This definitely said it was
missed in Facebook. I thought I recalled Facebook being able to handle
calls, but I cannot find anything about it in the app. Perhaps on line?

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi all,

I thought I'd get your opinions before I go chatting with the developers of
these kinds of apps.

I have found that one of the biggest difficulties I have is holding the
phone steady enough to take clear pictures. I personally can't afford
purchasing devices to hold the phone so I came up with another idea.

I have found that I can take pretty good pics if the phone is resting on a
table top or something. However, I still tend to jiggle the phone when
tapping the button to take a pic or start the video and the like.

My thought here is asking the developers to add the ability to activate pic
taking or video starting and stopping via a sound. this would enable us to
position the phone and then clap our hands or whistle or something to
activate it.

I figure that if you folks feel this would be helpful enough I'd start the
discussion with the developers and see if they would be open to such a
change.

So, what do you all think?

Thanks.

Hello E V. Your quote of "If tasks get to difficult, then find a way to >
overcome your challenges. That applys to just about everything in life." is
a bit disturbing to me. Here is why.

First off, what do you personally know about Dan, or about most others who
subscribe to this list? Do you know what challenges someone might be faced
with other than blindness, or maybe blindness is already a challenge as it
is for some individuals and it's a daily struggle just to get by as it is.

If I talk about me personally I can tell you that I've overcome the problems
of losing my eye sight. However had someone said what you wrote to me during
the first few years of me losing my sight, my response to you would be very
harsh. You don't personally know my situation, whether I can overcome things
or not. I agree that many things in life can be overcome, but not everyone
is the same, not everyone has positive people around them, or maybe not
everyone thinks in the same way to give them the ability to easily overcome
challenges in life.

So, before making assumptions of someone's message on list, let's step back
for a bit and think how our message may sound or how it may come off. For
example, how might you feel if using a harsh tone I pointed out that you
misspelled the word "applies" because you wrote it as "applys".

Thanks much from your friendly moderator.

RE: Object recognition app

2013-01-20 Thread E V
Hello Deb,

Tap TapSee has a camera button. It works best for objects that are
relatively close up. For example, it can recognize a coke can, an office
style telephone set, even US currency, etc. It also appears as though the
conversion might take place in the cloud, but not absolutely clear about
that. The recognition may take up to 5 seconds. To gain confidence with
it, I would shoot items that are close-up.

The one that you are thinking of is called tap tap see. It's free in the app
store.
We have used this for about a week now, and it's pretty amazing at times.
Today it said that I was in the Big Lot's parking lot.

Hello Listers,
I was wondering what are teh app names that are out that one can use to
recognize objects? I know Omoby can do this but I thought I recently heard
a podcast that there's a new one out.

If anyone knows please let me know, if not I'll have to go review the
podcasts I subscribe to find it.

Many thanks,

Ok, thanks. I think the thing that concerns me is that it doesn't seem to be
happening to many people in the way that I described. This is not an
occasional occurrence. I can get this exact issue to come up every time. I
would actually be somewhat relieved if it's a software issue that can be
resolved instead of going and getting a new phone. I will probably head over
to the apple store to make sure. I think I only have 2 or 3 weeks left on my
warranty.

was crashing rather frequently. I assume they use the term crashing for when
you press the hold button and you do not get the Siri sound and Siri just
will not work and you have to hold and close Siri several times to
eventually get it to start working. I also have this problem almost every
time I try and dictate in to a text field. At the Apple Store we did a
restore to factory settings, and unfortunately the second time I tried to
use Siri the issues were back and it is just as bad as ever. Amazingly this
is not an issue on my new iPad Mini, so it obviously is only affecting
certain devices like my 5S. We just have to live with it and hope that Apple
fixes it in the next IOS update. It is quite frustrating but going to the
Apple Store will unfortunately not fix it.

Hi Clarence,

I have this problem all the time, at least once a week. Not only is SIRI
effected, but so is Facetime, and messaging. If you ask SIRI a valid
question, or issue it a command, it acts extremely disoriented. Here is the
work around that I am using.

I use an Iphone 5 running IOS 8.0.2
Hold down your screen lock for about four seconds, or until you hear voice
over asking if you want to Power Off, or Cancel. Choose Power Off, and
wait for about 5 minutes before bringing your power off stateback on.

This seems to restore SIRI brains back, and Facetime, and Messaging begin to
work correctly. All the best.

I want to apologize for steering anyone wrong with my recommendation of the
timely app.
As I mentioned in my previous message, I was very upset about chime no
longer being in the App Store. It seemed at first, as if timely would solve
the problem. However, it doesn't seem to maintain the settings. I have
received a refund and I am going to try to get chime from my computer.
I hope that other people can do the same. and the iTunes will let us all
restore it. If not, maybe someone else will have better luck at finding a
substitute than I did. I tried a few and none of them were good.

RE: cases for the 6+

Before you guys get real excited about the Otterbox Defender for the iPhone

complimentary. Among some of the criticisms is that the volume control is
difficult to use, and the gap between the iPhone 6 and the built in screen
is such that activating apps is quite awkward. But please, don't take my

I will say that the volume controls buttons on the iPhone 6 Otterbox
Defender case have taken a bit of getting used to, more than the iPhone 5.
In my humble opinion, the 5 Otterbox case was easier to use for the volume
and for plugging in the phone to charge. Things have gradually gotten easier
for me over the month I've had my phone and case, and they will hopefully
continue to get better. However, getting a good firm and hard press on the
volume buttons or on the power/wake button does take more doing with the
iPhone 6 case, and it sounds like perhaps for the 6 Plus case too. Those
with dexterity issues or trouble gripping things may have trouble. If you do
struggle with gripping, I would encourage you to take a look at one and see
if you can try it before buying.

iPhone 6 Plus, woes and resolution

2014-11-10 Thread E V
Hi,

I received my iPhone 6 Plus this past Friday November 7 in the mail from
Verizon Wireless. After connecting my iPhone 6 Plus to iTunes, iTunes
reported that my phone could not be restored from a backup because my iPhone
6 Plus software was older than my backup. So, I proceeded to update my
phone to IOS 8.1. I still had problems, I could not make an out bound call.
So, off to the Apple store. I had both phones with me, the 5 and the 6
Plus. The apple technician immediately saw that my carrier was not showing
up at the top left. Since technicians are allowed 10 minutes with
customers, he merely swapped the sim card from my iPhone 5 and put it into
the 6 Plus. Well, that wasn't really a fix, but it was a short resolution
for the technician.

So, I came home and reconnected my iPhone 6 Plus to iTunes and attempted a
restoration. After putting in my Apple ID in several times, a friend
suggested that I try other passwords. So, I tried my iCloud Chain password,
and Walla. I share this just in case others might encounter such a horendus
experience. All the best.

these folders to be visible on the iPhone, is there such a way to do this?
