Re: Playing with the camera app

2022-07-30 Thread Margaret Thomas
I'm new to the Camera app on my SE 2020 and can't get this to work. It
says New Quick Take Video and tap and hold the shutter to record a quick
video and something about dragging the shutter to the left. It also
says 0 people. I'm sliding my finger around the screen and not hearing
anything about view finder. I've pointed the lens at my refrigerator
and my computer keyboard and sometimes it says 0 people. It keeps
repeating 0 people the way it does when the last thing I check on the
home screen is the charge level when I'm charging the phone.

I think I need Camera 101!

Any help continuing my iPhone education is much appreciated.

Margaret

Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Margaret Thomas

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the
original poster, I have an iPhone SE 2020 and like Touch ID.

The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line
being my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time
and might power it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I
have Apple ID, Touch ID, and Pass Code set up and have purchased an app
on the App Store. The way things are set up, I have to type in my pass
code when I power up. I can usually do it correctly the first or second
time so typing it isn't the problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead
if possible. I am not in a work or school situation and my house does
not resemble Grand Central Station and I do not have a lot of personal
information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got
the cell and was trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept
saying locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"
word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to
never. I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to
change that if someone could explain why it would be good when I use the
phone so little. I'd greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass
code for when I needed it for other things and could use Touch ID when
powering on.

 Thanks,

Margaret

Hi all,
Subject pretty much says it all. I just bought an iPhone 13 mini and
have set up Face ID with no difficulty; however, it seems that it'll
work two or three times and then will require me to use my pass code to
unlock my phone. I am getting very tempted to put my SIM card back in my
SE 20 lol. It's much easier to just reach over and unlock it with my
finger than to pick up my mini and hope I can get it to unlock without
having to type in my pass code. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-06 Thread Margaret Thomas

Thank you.

It's normal state is powered off and I might use it 3 times a day, but
don't always use it every day.

When it was new and before I set locked to never, I could unlock it by
pressing the home button. Is locked supposed to be so the screen can't
inadvertently be changed rather than for keeping unauthorized people
out, or is it a sort of sleep thing where the battery isn't being used
at 100% capacity? If it is on and the battery is only slowly draining
and I can press the home button and not have to do the Pass Code, it
might be a solution. I think locked has something to do with
inactivity, but it is only for occasional use and is not my primary phone.

Any help is much appreciated.

I don't know if you turn your phone often, but really you shouldn't. iPhones

From time to time you may end up having to turn it off and back on if you have
strange issues or of course there could be a time when you simply run out of
battery and the phone turns itself off, but I literally go weeks and sometimes
months without turning my phone off and back on and the only time I have to put
in my passcode is when for some reason Face Id isn't working a few times one
attempt after another (same goes for Touch Id) or for some other strange
reason. But typically I again often go days without having to enter my passcode
manually.

Re: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-07 Thread Margaret Thomas

Sieghard and All:

I want to keep Pass Code so it is available when needed and not totally
disable it.

I think 3 people have said that it is not a good idea to have the phone
powered off most of the time as I have been doing and I want to try
having it locked when I'm not using it to save the battery. I thought
powering off when it isn't being used was saving the battery.

I set it to never lock when I first got the phone months ago and I
forget where I did it. I've spent hours this afternoon and tried the
word lock in the settings app. I found one result for lock and never
and there were several time periods in minutes and I double tapped on 5
minutes as an experiment. It's been much longer than 5 minutes and my
home screen is still talking. I don't know if I missed a save button or
if I'm misunderstanding something. Could you please help me out and
give the proper location and time period to choose for the way I use the
phone?

I'm doing better with what I think is manual locking and the screen
doesn't talk and I can press the home button and speech resumes. It's
been a long day and I'm confused since I don't understand your saying "I
personally am not one of those and want my phone to lock relatively
quickly after I use it" since it went silent on me almost immediately.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Margaret,

As I already said in my previous email, you have to have a passcode as backup
for Touch Id and you cannot unlock your phone after it was turned off with
Touch Id, only the passcode will work here.
Another place where only the passcode works is if you want to go back into
Settings > Touch Id and Passcode so even if you decide you want to turn off
Touch Id/passcode, you do have to enter it in order to get into that area of
settings.

Only you can know if you want to leave your phone open/unprotected. I assume if
you kept it mostly at home, you don't have sensitive information on it and you
don't plan to use Apple Pay then you could disable passcode/Touch Id.

As for the automatic locking of the phone that again is your preference. There
are others on this list who prefer to lock their phone manually by pressing the
side button, I personally am not one of those and want my phone to lock
relatively quickly after I use it because the more it is unlocked the more
battery is used up. But then of course I have about 80 apps on my phone and use
it constantly for anything from checking the time and the weather to checking
email, sending and receiving text messages to doing online banking and using a
variety of home automation devices like smart thermostats for my home and
business, I have video cameras and a monitored alarm system at my business and
have apps for that and I have video doorbell and cameras at home. Even if I
don't actively use my phone I probably am listening to an Audible book while I
am walking to or from work, at night before I go to sleep and so on. I never
counted how often I use my phone each day, but I guess it must be at least 1 to
3 or 4 times an hour so over the course of a day I'd aay probably anywhere from
40 to 60 times when I grab my phone and unlock it to do something.

Somehow, in my various phone misadventures, I inadvertently added maps

only found how to rearrange items in a stack and how to remove a stack.
I tried removing one of the widgets I didn't want and probably didn't

6. Tap Add Widget.
7. Tap Done." in doesn't work for me. How can a blind person tell when
the icons start to wiggle? I have a hearing problem and can't get the
podcast by Thomas Domville on "How to add, remove, and customize widgets
in iOS" on Applevis to work either. He did something to get VO to
announce column numbers that I missed and my Today View on IOS 15.6.1
does not sound like his demonstration:

Also, I'm not clear about what size widget to choose to get all the
extras like barometric pressure when I double tap on the widget.

My weather app is on screen 2 of my Home screen.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can help me get weather back
prominently like it was before.

Re: Getting Weather Widget Back On iPhone Home Screen

2022-10-21 Thread Margaret Thomas
I did some more web searches and one from Hadley that the "transcript"
was just a sample, but it gave me a hint that I tried with "VoiceOver
Quiz and Answers: Rita's iDevice Advice for December 27, 2021" that I
mentioned. I have partial success. I once again have a weather widget,
but, unfortunately, it's on page 2 of the home screen and not on page 1
where it's more convenient. I was wondering if I can manage to get it
on page 1 if I can remove the one on page2 or should I remove the one on
page 2 and try again to get it on page 1?

Many thanks,

Margaret

5.  If you don't see the widget you want to add, scroll down or use the
search bar at the top of the feature.

He did something to get VO to
announce column numbers that I missed and my Today View on IOS
15.6.1 does not sound like his demonstration:

https://www.applevis.com/podcasts/how-add-remove-customize-widgets-ios

Also, I'm not clear about what size widget to choose to get all the
extras like barometric pressure when I double tap on the widget.

My weather app is on screen 2 of my Home screen.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can help me get weather back
prominently like it was before.

Widgets Live Event Postponed

2022-10-25 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, All:
There's an update for anyone who was interested in the free virtual
event on widgets Mystic Access had scheduled for this Thursday night.

Apparently, both Kim and Chris got hit by a bad bug and the live event
has had to be postponed and no date for the live event has been set.

Kim said:

"So, here's what we're going to do. Because of how our calendars are
looking over the next couple weeks, we're going to record this event as
soon as we're
well enough and put it up on our Free Downloads site so you can listen

I did some more web searches and one from Hadley that the "transcript"

was just a sample, but it gave me a hint that I tried with "VoiceOver

Quiz and Answers: Rita's iDevice Advice for  December 27, 2021" that I

widget,

but, unfortunately, it's on page 2 of the home screen and not on page 1

where it's more convenient.  I was wondering if I can manage to get it

on page 1 if I can remove the one on page2 or should I remove the
one on

page 2 and try again to get it on page 1?

Many thanks,

isn't being used was saving the battery.

I set it to never lock when I first got the phone months ago and I forget where
I did it. I've spent hours this afternoon and tried the word lock in the
settings app. I found one result for lock and never and there were several
time periods in minutes and I double tapped on 5
minutes as an experiment. It's been much longer than 5 minutes and my
home screen is still talking. I don't know if I missed a save button or if I'm
misunderstanding something. Could you please help me out and give the proper
location and time period to choose for the way I use the phone?

I'm doing better with what I think is manual locking and the screen doesn't talk and I
can press the home button and speech resumes. It's been a long day and I'm confused
since I don't understand your saying "I personally am not one of those and want my
phone to lock relatively quickly after I use it" since it went silent on me almost
immediately.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Margaret,

As I already said in my previous email, you have to have a passcode as backup

Another place where only the passcode works is if you want to go back into
Settings > Touch Id and Passcode so even if you decide you want to turn off
Touch Id/passcode, you do have to enter it in order to get into that area of

Only you can know if you want to leave your phone open/unprotected. I assume if

As for the automatic locking of the phone that again is your preference. There

2022-10-05 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, All:

I can get Siri to give me the barometric pressure by verbally asking,
but doesn't say if the pressure is rising or falling. I've been looking
for something with a little more pressure information and someone
suggested Dark Sky, but I understand it will be going away in 2023. I
found an old post from Richard which mentions pressure and some other
items like moon phase that I'm interested in being on the native weather
app.

Apparently having containers on the rotor allows more information to be
heard on the screen than I'm getting. Containers were new to me and I
sort of understand them now,but I'm not finding them on the rotor for
the screen that lists some of today's weather 10 day forecast etc.
I've got Characters; Words; Headings and Speaking Rate on the rotor

Could someone please tell me how to add containers to the rotor so I can
get this additional weather information.

I'm running IOS 15.6.1 on an iPhone SE 2020.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

By Apple weather, do you mean the native weather app? In the native weather
app, when you go to containers, it takes you to hourly information and then
to updates. Unfortunately, it skips the daily forecast. This is
interesting though and I will keep trying containers to see what it might do
to make navigation easier.

Containers are groups of information that you can jump between with the
rotor feature. These are kind of like regions with in an application. You
also see containers or landmarks on websites: such as navigation menus, main
page content, or footer content.

In the Apple Weather app you have: current weather, hourly weather and 10
day forecast. You can add the container option to your rotor. When you
switch the containers option you can flick down to move down the application
via containers and once you get to the container you want to explore, now
you can flick right to read the content in the container. You can also flick
up to view containers above your current reading position.

I hope this helps,
Ed

In the default weather app on the iPhone you do not have to navigate it

Hi, All:

Good news is that I got containers added to the rotor. What worked for
me was:

settings, accessibility, voice over, then rotor, then select containers

The middling news is that I still can't hear moon phase in the bunch of
"extras" like pressure in either the native weather app or weather as a

The "extras" give rising or falling for the pressure and that was a good

normally want to know about local weather except for moon phase, so I'm
good.

Re: Playing with the camera app

2022-07-31 Thread Margaret Thomas

Yes, this is my first time with the camera app itself.

I tried the Seeing AI app for the first time the other day when I had a
bill that Open Book did not read well and I thought might be mainly
handwritten. I was able to get the total amount of the bill from it,
but only got 1 column out of 5 that a friend said were there after my
initial attempt. I'm going to work more with Seeing AI and it could
well just be my inexperience that didn't give me more of the bill.

Do you have any idea what the drag the shutter to the left for (word I
couldn't make out) might be about?

Thanks for telling me how to shut it up.

Margaret

good, I just close the camera app in the App Switcher.

I initially still had no luck. I slid my finger around the screen and
only heard the thing about quick video ; Drag the shutter to the left
for something that sounds like burst; and 0 people. There is no focus or view
finder.
There was a continue button that I finally found and double tapped on and
then I could follow your instructions.

It was interesting and needs some work. It liked to call things musical
instrument and there isn't a musical instrument in the house. It got some
things right.

A friend came when I was going around downstairs with it and I finally got it

Chris,

I had also been wondering how to do this, but am running into a problem.
I double tapped on delete and double tapped on the this will delete 2
messages, which was what I wanted, but it only deleted the first one.

I'm not in a standard situation since I don't get a lot of texts and I
text myself to practice and Verizon seems to call them iMessages or
iCloud messages and I don't know if that is making a difference. When I
tried, I had 2 messages I sent myself to myself and one from Verizon and
I wanted to delete the 2 I sent myself. There was no cancel button

Re: Mentions and Group Conversations on iPhone

2023-01-02 Thread Margaret Thomas
I think I did what Malcolm suggests this morning when I did what Mike
suggested. Anyway, it is off now. I've turned everything off that
folks have said to turn off and still get some form of the word mentions
when I'm working in the messages app and I just looked again and it is
in my rotor along with characters, words, misspelled words etc. and I
can't deselect it from the rotor the way I normally do since it isn't
listed as a choice.

I just turned the phone off and back on again and started composing a
text to myself and there were other texts from me to me on the screen.
I swiped right to get to text field and it said the usual text field
double tap to edit and that darned form of the word mentions. I don't
know why I have it in the rotor and no one else does. I'll try a search
like Mike B. did after a long break.

Thanks for your patience. Any more suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Spoken RX Station Questions

2023-01-28 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, All:

The recent thread about the CBS Spoken RX reminded me that I ran into a
stumbling block with my station some time back.

I got it to spell, but I can't get it to spell anything but my name.
Also, I can't get it out of spell mode. I took out the batteries and
put them in again after a couple of minutes. I did not completely
replace them since I had just gotten it to spell when it said low
battery and I put in new batteries. Does anyone have any suggestions
how to get it out of spell mode? Also, if I can get it out of spell
mode and it will spell the name of the prescription, is there a way of
getting it to say something like Beta for the letter b, Charlie for the
letter c etc? With my bad hearing, several letters and numbers sound alike.

I got an iPhone after I received the Spoken RX station and was wondering
if the app will say Beta etc.?

Many thanks,

Margaret

Re: CVS Pharmacy Spoken Rx for iOS and Android

2023-06-15 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, Chris and All:

I received a Spoken RX device some time ago and had problems with it and
thought I would try out the CBS app on my iPhone SE 2020. I clicked on
the link on my Windows 10 Pro and JAWS 2021 you gave to try to find out
more and it seems that one now needs a YouTube account. Is this correct?

Thank you,

Margaret

Hello Everyone,

Question: Has anyone got the CVS Spoken Rx feature working?

The day after I posted the podcast transcription to the group, I went to my
favorite local CVS pharmacy and informed the head pharmacist that I wanted to
be enrolled in the Spoken Rx program.

He told me that he had attended the training sessions on this and that he would
enroll me in the program. I was heartened to learn that two other CVS
customers had also recently made such a request.

A couple of days later, I received an SMS that my prescription starting with the letter
"S" was ready for pickup. This baffled me as SMS notifications always include
the first 3 letters of a medication name, not just one.

When I arrived at the store, I was told that the Spoken Rx reader had arrived
and was ready for pickup.

This surprised me as my pharmacist and I had already discussed the fact that I
would be using my iPhone to read the prescriptions. Be that as it may, given
that it would cause a bit of a pain for him to return the reader, I accepted
the reader.

Now, at this point both he and I are under the impression that he is to receive
some kind of tags that he and his team can affix to my meds in order that
either the CVS app or the dedicated reader can voice.

Is this correct?

He is still waiting on some feedback from his regional manager as to how to
proceed.

As for me, I am just wondering if an actual special tag is required in order to
hear the medication info.

One thing I learned from my pharmacist, and had confirmed by a pharmacist at a
neighboring location, is that not everything CVS advertises is as accurate as
the CVS public relations department would have you believe.

So, any feedback you can contribute as to your CVS Spoken Rx experience, thus
far, would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

I've spent most of the day trying to update my credit card information

e-mail and not my phone. Is VD Scan the correct name to search for?
How much is the app now? I thought I was almost there swiping through
all those reviews etc. on the app store on the phone until I came upon a
button saying something that had nothing to do with VD Scan or Voice

what I think is what I want for $9.99 or so. After all this work, I
don't want to mess up. IOS 17.2.1.

Hi Margaret,

I seem to recall folks posting after the release of iOS 17 that the
double tap time-out setting was changed to lower the speed needed to
execute a double tap. The effect of this would require you to double tap
faster in order for it to register.

Go to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, and double tap time-out witch
will be near the bottom of the screen. Mine was currently set to .25
seconds and I executed the increment button to make it .3 seconds which
I like better since I don't have to double tap quite as fast. Play
around with that setting to see if it helps you.

Good luck.

there when I looked earlier and I was looking for more than 1 item and I was
double tapping on Hey Siri. The double tapping problem is still here and it
might have been the problem earlier. It took about a half dozen tries for the
phone to recognize my double taps. I got the phone 2 years ago yesterday and,
as far as I know, I'm double tapping the same as I always have and the phone
has just gone nuts.

Thanks ,

Margaret

It’s also possible that since they got rid of the hay in hey Siri, if your
friend has that enabled, Siri could be listening and hear anything and quit,
because it thinks you’re doing something. Try disabling hands-free Siri and
just use the side button and see if that helps. I never have used hey Siri

it won't do is act as an uninterruptable power supply. You'd have to
push a small button to engage the battery if power failed.

Hello Margaret. I've really come to appreciate the Anker GAN Prime
733 which combines a 1 MAH power bank and wall charger in one
handy device. I leave it plugged in all of the time so I know it'll
be full when I need it. It has folding plug prongs which let you
plug it directly into the wall socket or power bar. It has two USB C
ports and a USB A port. You'd also need a Lightning to USBC cable
which Anker makes.
I also have a 2 MAH battery from Energrid. It gives audio beep
feedback and vibrates to let you know when something's connected or
when it's charging. Between those two batteries, I know I'm covered
for a good eight or nine full iPhone charges. That'll see me through
around three or four days. More if I'm conservative.
If you're worried about longer spans of time, there are much bigger
power banks. The two batteries I have are very portable and both
will easily fit in a shoulderbag. Besides the USBC to Lightning
cable, I would also suggest you get a spare USB C to USB C cable.
That may be useful for other accessories like USB headsets,
emergency radios or Bluetooth keyboards. You can always charge other
power banks while you have electricity using the ports in the 733
charger. Hope that helps a bit. Amazon has a slight discount here in
Canada on a number of Anker products. Doubtless, this is true in the
US also. There are a very wide range of other bands and you'll
hopefully hear from people more experienced with those as well.
