Paul,

as I wrote in my post, indeed it does mean you end up with an extra
copy, unless there is some option that I have missed to stop that
happening:

Convert selection to MP3.

select this and voila! an MP3 copy will appear under the aac version in
your library.

Remember to delete the extraneous copies after you're done otherwise
your library will balloon in size.

Canvas Fix

2004-08-31 Thread Greg Pennefather
For those who have the problem with Canvas not launching past today (I
believe), a fix has been posted. Unfortunately it requires some tinkering
with ResEdit or Resourcer but it is purported to work until 2039. The fix
doesn't say this but, as usual, if you are going to do this make sure you
perform it on a copy of the application and not the original.

I'm supplying this for info only as I cam across it in my reading - I
disclaim any responsibility as to its effectiveness, efficacy or voracity.

And the description is

Hello all,
In regards to the Canvas 3.5 expiration bug; we were able to debug this
problem and found a manual fix which can be applied that will enable Canvas
3.5 to run until December 31st, 2039. Apple has a limitation in their ROM
code that will not allow the program to run beyond that date.

The steps are as follows:

Run ResEdit or Resourcer and open the Canvas 3.5.5 application. (resource
fork)
Find the 'toly' resource with an id of 1011 and open it.
You should see hexadecimal values '07D4 0008 001F 000C 001E 0001'
Change it to '07F7 000C 001F 000C 001E 0001'
Close/Save the resource change.
Close/Save the resource file/fork.
Canvas 3.5.5 should now run without the warning for another 35 years!

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern resulting from this unforeseen
bug.

I got the instructions this morning via Pica. It seems to work OK,
the message went away and we are now past 12.30 pm (the rumoured

We also may be incorporating the above fix in an automated patch,
this would be done sometime this week most likely.

I am so pleased I don't have to master a new program in the near future!

Canvas fix , credit where it is due !

2004-08-31 Thread Robert Howells

Macintouch August 27th.

Matt Gough
With reference to the problem with Canvas expiring soon, the response
from Deneba (now ACD Systems) is utter nonsense.
The System clock on the Mac flipped over to a 'negative' value on
Wednesday, January 19, 1972 at 3:14:08 am, and so has been negative
since long before the Mac existed.
I have been debugging Canvas here using the venerable Macsbug and
have determined that it will deliberately expire at 12:30pm on 31st
August 2004.
Thankfully this expiry date is stored in a resource within Canvas,
and so anyone with a copy of ResEdit can fix their Canvas to alter
this expiry date.

 Instructions:
Download ResEdit
Make a copy of Canvas in the Finder in case you make a mistake below
Launch ResEdit
In ResEdit, open the copy of Canvas you created earlier
A window will show up in ResEdit with lots of icons with names under
them.

Double-click the icon whose name is 'toly' (without quotes)
Another window will show up with a one item list in it.
Double-click the item 1011
A window will show up with a load of hex values in it.
The first line contains '07D4' - (07D4 hex is 2004 decimal)
Select the 'D4' portion of this number
Type the characters 'f7' (without quotes - and NOT the F7 function key)
What was 07D4 should now be 07F7.
Quit ResEdit, saving your changes to Canvas
This patched Canvas 3.5.2 will now run happily until 12:30pm on 31st
August 2039.

I wonder whether the expiry date was a marketing decision or a lack of
trust by the developers that their code would still work after all
this time.

 Hope that helps

The new iMacs are seriously cool

BUT!

Why oh why did they only put in 64MB's of video RAM!

Most games that have come out this year pretty much need 128MB's to be

Yes ... it is a pity they don't even allow a 128MB VRAM BTO option for

Initial iMac Availability To Be Limited, Sources Say

2004-08-31 Thread Richard Kay

From: http://www.macobserver.com (aka TMO)

PARIS, FRANCE - Apple dealers are being told that flat-panel iMac G5s
will be in very limited supply until late-November, early-December.
Apple introduced the new iMac today to cheering crowds during the Apple
Expo keynote in Paris, France.

Independent dealers say that the flow of new iMacs will be a trickle
when they initially become available in mid-September. TMO was also
told that the 17 model will be most readily available unit in the
beginning, and that 20 models will be virtually non-existent when the
iMac G5 first ships in mid-September.

Supply constraints should ease across the product line in late-November
or early-December.

Dealers were not given specific reason for supply constraints, but were
told that Apple will be shipping the new iMacs one at a time from
manufacturing facilities in Asia. Apple has similarly turned to
air-freight shipping to meet initial demand with other product rollouts
in the past.

You can find the iMac G5 product line at the Apple Store. You can find
additional details on the iMac at Apple's iMac Web site.

New iMac G5 Details

2004-08-31 Thread Richard Kay

From: http://www.macobserver.com

PARIS, FRANCE - Apple announced new iMacs today, bringing the
long-awaited G5 processor to the consumer product line. The iMac G5
includes a new all-in-one form factor similar to Apple's current line
of Cinema Displays, and Apple is touting the design as the world's
thinnest desktop PC, at only 2 thick.

Apple is offering a 17 1.6 GHz model with a combo drive, a 64 MB
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra video card, two USB 1.1 ports, three USB
2.0 ports, two FireWire ports, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, a built-in 56K
modem, S-Video and composite video out, an 80 GB hard drive, and 256 MB
of RAM.

The mid-range model will feature a 17 LCD display with a 1.8 GHz
processor, a SuperDrive, and the other features from the entry-level
model.

A 20 high-end model will sport a 180 GB of Serial ATA storage. The
20 model is 2.2 inches thick.

The company is offering a 17 education model that has no optical
drive, nor a modem. It also has video card with only 32 MB of memory,
as opposed to the 64 MB cards on the consumer models.

During the Apple Expo keynote this morning, Phil Schiller also said
that the iMac G5 has built-in speaker at the bottom of the iMac that
are designed to reflect sound off of the desktop towards the user.
Apple's iMac G5 spec sheet also notes that the new model supports wall
mounting through a VESA mount, an industry standard mounting system.

Mr. Schiller also demonstrated that the back of the iMac is accessible
by removing three screws, which allows the user to take off the entire
back of the unit. From there, one can easily add memory, or change the
drive. In addition, Mr. Schiller showed that the iMac G5 has 3 fans,
and that the unit is quieter than a whisper.

Also of note is the fact that in a video for the new iMac, the
introductory text used the phrase From the creators of the iPod. To
this end, Apple is comparing the way the iMac looks on its stand to the
way that an iPod sits in its Dock.

Each iMac model can support up to 2 GB of RAM, a substantial increase
over previous iMac models. The company has also added a digital audio
output, the same output currently found on Apple's professional Power
Mac G5 product line.

None of the models include an AirPort Extreme card, though the card is
available as an option.

17 1.6GHz - A$2199
17 1.8GHz - A$2499
20 1.8GHz - A$3199
Education model US$1,199 (roughly A$1721)

Disk Utility repair permissions
Disk Utility disk repair
delete caches (There is a way to automate this, but when needed I have just

daily, weekly and monthly periodic repairs? (These last three should
automatically be done in the weenie hours, but aren't done if your machine

Hi James WAMUG'ers,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have just updated my 1.8Ghz G5 to
10.3.5 and so far have not had any problem to speak of. Mind you I do not
have any FireWire hardware, just 1 Zip drive, laser printer (Brother) and
scanner/printer (Epson) off a USB2 hub.

I did have some crashes from Excel and Word, both quitting suddenly when
using Save As to a deeply nested folder. Do not know why, but so far have
not noticed anything with 10.3.5.

There was a response to your request suggesting regular maintenance. I use a
little utility called YASU for running the daily, weekly, monthly CRON,
Repair Permissions and clean caches. Seems to work well.

Good luck,

Philippe C
