Re: iPhone 3G S - Telstra Plans - plan calculator

2009-07-05 Thread Gordon Campbell

Have a look at the pre-paid offers. The 'Talk & Text' option is pretty
good and as long as you're willing to tweak things a bit by purchasing
packs when you need them it's actually pretty good value, not
outstanding, but certainly competative.

Hi Merv,

It is apparently an Epson printer or possibly scanner driver. So
suggest you have check your Epson hardware and see if it is working as
it should, and if not reinstall the driver. You could turn off the
device and see if you can empty your trash bin.

Maybe the driver isn't installed properly. Did you have to install a

Who is your carrier?

Officially only Virgin and Vodafone support tethering here in
Australia without paying either an extra fee (Optus), or 'hacking' a
file on your iPhone (Telstra)

I know from personal experience that with Virgin, it works as per
the instructions supplied by Apple... apparently the same for
Vodafone.

Optus charges an extra $9.99 a month to enable tethering and Telstra
don't even support it

Re: PC 100/133 memory

2009-07-05 Thread David de la Hunty

Hi Kevin,

I have just gutted a recently deceased iMac G4 (desk lamp style circa
2001) and as is my habit I kept the RAM for a rainy day. Two boards,
one is 128mB PC133U and about 5 inches long, the other one half that
length is also PC133, 256mB. I can post those to you if you like.

I also probably have more superseded ram hoarded around the place but
would have to have a hunt. Not sure if the rest is PC100 or PC133 but
probably a mixture.

Any use?

Cheers

Unfortunately all the machines have only one stick of 256Mb RAM.

I am hoping that listers may have some of this RAM in the shed
gathering dust and may be willing to donate it to this cause. I
have plenty of the DDR RAM used in later models.

I have plenty of 32 and 64Mb sticks of either PC100 or PC133 RAM,
but nothing larger to enable these machines to effectively run 10.3
or 10.4. Second hand PC133 RAM is very expensive.

Once again I can assure listers that the machines from this project
are given absolutely free to needy people. To date I have placed
around 30 Macs in homes and organisations and have seen the results
bearing fruit.

Hi Aurora

Superduper is your friend ... free copy to start with available here :-

The free version will erase the disk you are copying to and then copy
all

the necessary files off your hard drive including your user files .

Unless you are on a recent intel mac , recommend a firewire external
drive .

With the firewire external drive you can boot from that drive and then
copy back

to your normal Mac if you need to .

Pay for the extra's on Superduper and you can be selective about what
you copy

eg : System and NO users
or
Users and no system

Your settings for the applications you use will be in your User folder ,
including Mail & Bookmarks & application preferences .

Various people have different preferences , so your's will be in your
user file
while another user wih their own account will have their prefernces in
their user file

Have fun

Re: try this

2009-07-05 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Frans,

You sent this to me personally -sorry, I can't unsubscribe you - I am just a
list member like yourself with no access to the list mechanics.

You should be able to just unsubscribe yourself though.

As the footer on each list email says:

>> Unsubscribe -

The important thing is to send the email from the account that is subscribed
to the list - you don't seem to be sure which of your two emails that is, so
if you sent from the wrong one that could explain why it didn't work.

The simple way is just to click on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the
next WAMUG message you get.

If you need to check which address you are subscribed under just "view
source" for the WAMUG email and you should see your email address in the
header.

If you are receiving multiple copies of each message you may be subscribed
more than once (ie subscribed under both email addresses) if so you would
need to unsubscribe separately from each email address.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Re: Internet dropouts with Intel iMac

Hi Clyde,

Many thanks for the advice. It would seem, as your case indicates,
that Safari is the one I should be looking at. In fact Safari did
crash once while we were attempting to download an update to iTune,
and this after 3 previous attempts.

I may need to reset the modem also, but am trying not to because it is
working very well with her laptop.

This certainly has me wondering whether the hardware is not at fault!!

If I cannot solve the problem with Firefox, I'll download the combined
update and burn it on a DVD or CDs. Maybe an update might solve the
problem.

Kind regards,

Philippe

Re: Connecting to Airport Extreme - now backup

2009-07-05 Thread Clyde McLennan

Hi,
I'm a little paranoid about backup, having worked in IT, and also
having to restore after disk failures from a backup.

For my home computer, beside TimeMachine backup, I also backup to
an external drive idrive.com where there is a free 2GB, or for $50pa
a massive 150GB. You can set it to automatically backup every hour,
or every day, or once a week.

A minimal backup system, the basic requirements are to cater for a
disc failure (ie, have an easy way to restore your disc data), and
also theft (or fire) (ie, have an offsite backup).

ADP.NET web site problems

2009-07-05 Thread Larry Pohl

Hi all,

Is there anyone on the list who knows a bit about the mysteries of ASP.Net.
I've been asked to look at a friend's web site that's throwing some major
errors and fixing it is way beyond my humble web design skills.

Or perhaps refer me to someone?

Some payment is possible.

Thanks

Larry

WOW? I don't know how to respond to that one. Windows is just a

teaching

our staff members to backup themselves. WOW!

It's nice to know people still care enough though to help these
people out.
Not all companies would let an outsider come in for just one person

it royalty).

Even on Apple Computers it always amazes me that people don't "Backup"
their important data regularly.

The Company knows my reputatation is beyond reproach, and I had told
them I would only target my search on JPEG files, not any other data.
Even so ... The Manager sat beside me and watched the whole
procedure ;-)

Re: Transparent Stripe down RHS of desktop

2009-07-05 Thread Ray Forma

Matt,

If it happens again, shut down and turn the computer upside-down for
5 minutes. Restart. If the stripes are gone then the electrolytic
capacitors in the computer are on their last legs.

Turning the caps upside down sloshes the little remaining electrolyte
around, making the capacitors work properly for a little while.

Hi, my daughter has managed to put a stripe permanently on her desktop on

the the RHS, top to bottom occupies about 10-15% of the desktop top screen

width, is transparent with about 20% opacity.
