Time Capsule back ups slowed to a crawl
I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.6 backing up to a 1GB TC (running software version 7.5.2). Suddenly the backing up process has slowed to an absolute crawl, even when connected via ethernet. I've rebooted the TC a few times, no improvement. The TC has 270GB of space available, so I don't see that as an issue. Any suggestions as to what the cause of slowness might be? Trying to avoid a full reformat of the TC if I can. When I first try to access the internet via Safari (or Firefox or Chrome) in the morning it slows down to a snail pace; in fact at times I have to quit out of frustration. The only solution I have found at this time is to unpower the modem for a few seconds and then power up again. After this all works again, albeit not as fast as I would like. My internet connection is via high speed ADSL2 and has been very satisfactory for some years. Email does not appear to be affected, only internet. Any ideas? Would a new modem help? Thanks, John Thompson Mac Mini 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Mac OS X 10.6.6 Hi John, If you are using the Netgear Wireless Router for the wireless network, do you have the iConnectAccess 621 in ‘Bridge Mode’? Bridge mode turns off the Router functions and allows another device (The Netgear Router) to handle the connection for you. You can’t have Two Routers … or you can have double NAT issues. Re: New MacBook Pros - This week?
Hi Rob, Yes I, like most Apple followers, am waiting with great anticipation for the announcement of the new MacBooks. Light Peak is not a certainty for this release but it would be a wonderful new feature. I have advised a friend to hold off buying a MacBook Air for two more weeks so that he can compare it with the new MacBooks and see which he prefers. Re: Time Capsule back ups slowed to a crawl
Hi Steven, On 21/02/2011, at 4:01 PM, Steven Knowles wrote: I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.6 backing up to a 1GB TC (running software version 7.5.2). I guess you mean a 1TB Time Capsule ;-) Suddenly the backing up process has slowed to an absolute crawl, even when connected via ethernet. I've rebooted the TC a few times, no improvement. A) Did you have a ‘failed backup’ just prior to this slowing down? The first backup after one that failed or was cancelled may appear to be running very slowly, while Time Machine recovers the partial in.Progress file from the previous one. Give it a long time before deciding there's a problem. B) The first backup after removing certain exclusions, especially System Folders and/or Applications, can appear to be extremely slow, as they involve tens of thousands of mostly very small files. It may also seem to report that it’s reached the amount to be backed-up, but then the amount will increase (often very slowly). C) Did you notice if Spotlight was indexing when the slowdowns started? Exclude it from Spotlight, via System Preferences Spotlight Privacy. Spotlight might decide to start indexing the backup volume while the backup is in progress, causing a huge slowdown in backup speed (doubling or even quadrupling the required time, not to mention sucking up CPU time). The solution? Exclude all backup volumes, and remember that after erasing a drive, you’ll have to re-exclude it; Spotlight has the temerity to forget about the excluded volume once it’s erased, even if the name remains the same. D) If you’re using the Directory Protection feature of Tech Tool Pro, exclude your Time Machine volume from it. It can slow your backups down significantly, and it won’t help fix a problem there, anyway. In addition, you probably want to exclude its files from Time Machine backups, as they may cause large backups. The TC has 270GB of space available, so I don't see that as an issue. Any suggestions as to what the cause of slowness might be? Trying to avoid a full reformat of the TC if I can. TCP/IP problems
Been having problems with our home wireless setup lately Using a Dlink 502T (Gen2) modem going into a router, which goes into an airport extreme base station which relays to another extreme base station The address used to connect to the router is the usual 10.1.1.1 However, when I look at the TCP/IP settings under Network Prefs, it lists the computers IP address as 10.0.1.X It hasnt stopped us (all 4 computers at home) from connecting to the internet, but what i have been noticing of late is that Dads 15 MBP has been having trouble connecting to the wireless network at night after he has come home from school Entourage and skype seem to connect, but firefox and safari dont want to load a webpage at all give it 5-10mins and violait fixes itself up no worries and will connect Airport is showing full range, and network prefs is saying it is connected to the internet Ive also noticed that where i used to have 3-4 bars range, im now down to 1, but havent really noticed a speed decrease the usual stuff, like rebooting the airports, verifying and repairing permissions and updating software havent seemed to make any difference anybody got any insight??? Lion OSX
Hi all, i am itching to get a 27 imac but patient enough to hold out for Lion to hit the stores. Does anyone have any inclination about when it is due? I gather June approx is likely but in typical Apple fashion it is a highly covert exercise up till the day it is released. Are there any hardware updates on the horizon for these machines too? I think the iMac was updated around 4-5 months ago (in a hardware sense) so it is unlikely to be physically updated prior to June. I would be happy with Snow Leopard but not that urgent that I wont hang out for Lion. Re: Lion OSX
Hi Peter, No one can say with certainty what the upgrade to Lion will cost. The upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard was just US$29. But that from Tiger to Leopard was, from memory, US$129. I have applied upgrades many times in past and they usually runs without a hitch. Some software and drivers may be fagged as not running under the new version of the OS but this was more a problem with programs that ran in Classic mode. So there are two schools of though on what the upgrade to Lion will cost. Some think that US$29 may be Apple's new price point for OS upgrades so as to keep their user base on the most recent version possible. Others think that the US$29 was a one off lower cost because Snow Leopard was billed as having few new features compared to Leopard -- in actuality there were enourmous changes under the hood including 64 bit. No More Apple Mac Book Pro’s Until Thursday
No More Apple Mac Book Pro’s Until Thursday Monday, February 21, 2011, 5:18:33 AM If you’re trying to buy an Apple Mac Book Pro this week you’ll probably find yourself out of luck. Its been reported that most Mac Book suppliers have no Pro’s left in stock and will not be receiving any until Apple have made the final secret tweaks to the latest update. Its been reported that some of the bigger European suppliers could be having their stock delivered as early as today despite the fact the new machines aren’t supposed to be available until Thursday later on in the week. Apple supposedly refused to ship any more Pro’s to suppliers who ran out of them up to 2 weeks ago which has lead to speculation that some serious improvements could be going on. There hasn’t been a great indication of what kind of updates Apple will be releasing on the new Pro’s though the rumours suggest that the new model will look and feel more similar to the slim-line Mac Book Air’s and will also include the Air’s flash storage drive. Other rumours include higher-resolution displays, longer lasting batteries, faster graphics, quicker processors and more connectivity options. There was speculation that the new Mac Book pro would be released in the USA today, however, Apple has been hesitant to make releases and announcements on Bank Holidays and today is the Presidents Day (sometimes called Washington’s Day). http://uk.webhostdir.com/news/ShowItem.aspx?ID=78905 Sent from Ronni's iPad -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

Re: Lion OSX
Hi Peter As Carlo has pointed out, unfortunately no one really knows with certainty how much it will cost (or exactly when) it will be released. (well apart from Apple and maybe a few select quiet few),... Lion should be out at WWDC 2011 so the developers can play with it and see what they need to re-wrote and adjust. The remainder of us will have to wait til later in the year,...assuming all goes to plan and there's not big set backs. As Nicholas say, probably later in the year September/October seems to be standard to releases in the past. In regards to the price, I personally would think we'll see it to the higher end of the scale. Apple said when they released Snow Leopard that it was a small update for Leopard users, and as it was more a tidy up of some code and not lots of new features they would only charge the smaller price for it (AUD$39). For those users of Tiger (10.4) it was still a bit more, as they could only buy it in the Mac Box Set (with iLife and iWork), which came in about $199 I think (Off the top of my head). As Lion (10.7) has new features this time around, I wouldn't be surprised if we see it more in the middle ground of pricing. Say $129-$149AUD. Considering previous upgrades were around the AUD$200 mark, it still would come in quite well priced. As long as you do the reading before the upgrade comes out, and your system is kept running well then generally the upgrade installs go without a hitch. (Keep good backups before you start and if you have a main machine don't do that as first). I personally tend to install it on one of my non essential machines first and read the forums and sites to check updates and see what others have saying. I keep my main machine (road warrior laptop) on the current OS for a week or two (or more),..just incase. That way if something does go awry, I'm not having to stop work to finish things off. (For me especially if I can't work on my laptop,..I don't earn money. Then the family doesn't get too happy,..lol.) But generally from experience, I've found them all to be pretty good. And then you take bets on how long before the .1 upgrade comes out. (ie 10.7.1). I think last time the difference from 10.6 to 10.6.1 was a matter of a couple of weeks,...lol. ;) Hope that helps a little. Just my view and 2cents on it as well :) Kind Regards Daniel --- Daniel Kerr MacWizardry Phone: 0414 795 960 Email: daniel @ macwizardry . com . au Web: http://www.macwizardry.com.au **For everything Macintosh** On 21/2/11 9:51 PM, cm cm200...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Peter, No one can say with certainty what the upgrade to Lion will cost. Re: Lion OSX
I was going to say I'd be more concerned with holding out for the next imac release rather than the next OS release but Ronni beat me to it. Although this is just my own speculation I'm of the opinion that Lion is going to be another cheap upgrade unless there are some pretty special features that we haven't been told about yet. SL was priced low because Apple felt there wasn't enough features to sell it on a higher price and most of the Lion features so far seem to be focused around the ipad/iphone. These features might be attractive to people who have these items but how would they sell an expensive upgrade to people who don't have an ipad or iphone? If you can wait until the next iMac release you'll certainly be saving more money than the price of an OS upgrade. Thanks Ronni. Yes, 1TB, spot on. I'm a decade behind the times. Sadly none of the A through D suggestions were applicable in my case, however TC did eventually reach the end of a back up it seems, though still behaving badly, as in slow. Right now I'm trying to see if Disk Utility can make an assessment. Currently checking catalog file with just 1 day and 4 hours estimated time remaining! Maybe my TC has reached the end of its useful life - nearly 3 years old now. We'll see. Re: ? modem problems
Hi Ronni, Thanks for your response. I am not sure what you mean by bridge Mode, perhaps you could explain it in more detail. What I do have is an Ethernet connection between the Router and the Modem, which in turn is connected to the phone line. Thanks and regards, John T. Re: ? modem problems
Hi John, It’s hard not being able to see your Network setup, so I’ll ask a few questions to try and ascertain how you have your Network setup. First question: Do you have a good In-Line ‘Filter’ between the phone iConnectAccess Modem? Second question: What Version is the iConnectAccess621? Third question: Do you have the Netgear Router setup as a Wireless Network? If you don’t know the version number of iConnectAccess621, you can check here: http://support.iprimus.com.au/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=264Itemid=120 If you’re connecting a third party router (any router) to your iPrimus ADSL modem, the modem needs to be in bridge mode first. If you have the Netgear Router setup as your Wireless Network and it has been working wirelessly ok, other than it is slow to connect to the Internet first thing in the morning. You can continue reading the below instructions … if not post back to WAMUG with more details please, so we can perhaps assist you more. — Basically you need to check a few settings first: 1. Connect your iMac via the yellow ethernet cable to the iConnectAccess Modem 2. Check on your iMac: System Preferences Network - Choose Ethernet - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP 3. Click Advanced (in Snow Leopard) - TCP/IP - Configure IP4: Using DHCP Then 4. Open Safari and login to the iConnectAccess Modem. A) Type 192.168.1.254 in Safari’s Address Bar B) If you have not changed the Default Login, it is Username: root Password: 0P3N ((thats zero-P-three-N) 5. Then you should be able to change the connection to ‘Bridge Mode’ A) Go to the Setup button along the top, then Click the New Connection option listed under WAN Setup (down the far left-hand side). B). Towards the top of the page, you should have a dropdown selection called Type, and it will probably be on PPPoE -- change it to Bridge. The page will then refresh with the bridge mode options. If you have version 2 of the iConnect modem, you'll need to enter a name for the connection - type iPrimus in the Name: box at the top (version 3 will have MyConnection in this box already). 6. All the default settings are fine, so click Apply 7. Click ’Save/Restart (if version 3) or System Commands (if version 2) 8. Then connect the yellow Ethernet Cable from the iConnectAccess621 to the WAN Port on the Netgear. The Netgear should be configured to connect using PPPoE ( as you have had this Network connecting to the Internet). I found this on the iPrimus support site which might be of help to you. http://support.iprimus.com.au/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=289Itemid=120 Cheers, Ronni On 22/02/2011, at 6:07 AM, John Thompson wrote: Hi Ronni, Thanks for your response. Maybe the new iMacs will have the 2nd generation Sandybridge chip in them, which will make them faster, as well as LION OSX. Are there any hardware updates on the horizon for these machines too? I think the iMac was updated around 4-5 months ago (in a hardware sense) so it is unlikely to be physically updated prior to June. It won't be released to the consumers at WWDC (aka sometime early June) It will be released to DEVELOPERS at that time so they have time to test the new OS with their products and issue their own updates and enhancements... So, I personally suspect consumers will most likely get it around September/October I would be happy with Snow Leopard but not that urgent that I wont hang out for Lion.
