Re: iPad and Flash/iPad in France
Hi Ronni I had a feeling that would be the answer but aware that so often there seems to be a work around thought it worth a try. It won't stop me continuing to enjoy the iPad and I'm certainly not interested in trying anything that has serious limitations. I thought I had carefully put a reminder in iCal to deal with this on my return. Not sure what happened but the reminder is no longer there and I'm now not sure who was asking the question. Was it Brett? If the person concerned would like to contact me off list I can go into more detail. Put simply there is no problem at all in buying a French Micro SIM for the iPad. I bought mine from an Orange Store at the same time as I purchased a french SIM for my mobile phone. Depending on where someone is staying, the French SIM for the iPad is not all that necessary. There are many hot spots at cafés and the few hotels I stayed at all had free WiFi. I was based in one town for three weeks and the accommodation I had came with wireless access. My reason for buying the French micro SIM was to give me complete independence for internet connection. I'm assured that the iPad SIM card will remain valid for six months which should cover my next visit in September. That remains to be seen!! I have always taken my MacBook with me when travelling but this time having my iPad with me was sheer joy and reminded me of comments made by Susan some time ago when she too had experienced the pleasure of travelling overseas with her iPad, Best wishes Laura -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: Sign or Encrypt Email Messages
Morning, Just a side note this does not stop SPAM as the header cannot be encrypted, some user information is visible. Data is protected with the necessary keys as Ronnie explained so eloquently. ISP's, providers of email services, software companies need to change SMTP ports from 25 to 465 or 587 (Authenticated) for total encrypted email to be achieved. Along with 993 or 994 for IMAP and POP servers. But, this approach also faulty as it depends on what happens other side of server. i.e Connection is SSL tunnelled through use of ports to provider, but other server receiving may not be. So, it gets sent open. A solution as most banks are doing is provide secure Message Board environments; which can link into email via webmail for sensitive information, which deals with email in a closed loop. Hence, supposedly secure?? Allows only import no export out of loop. A myriad of problems with solutions, but are they worth effort, time, and ultimately COST??? Notice how banks are charging for this privilege, and other providers also, for contacting via electronic means? Original post questions ease of creation for email accounts, this authentication process challenges such a creation. Whilst offering owners of server control over whom can authenticate, and verification of such? Cheers! `RobD... Re: How to change HD name of MDP after Import from PowerBookG4
Hi Ronni, I did follow the instructions step by step and no brackets. I have taken a Screen shot of the Systems preferences Sharing page and you can see that the name has changed successfully. at aft://MBP/ or MBP I went back over the last past of the instructions again and restated the MBP and turned the Modem off, Things have stayed the same. But I am glad you referred back to it because if you look at the Shared Folder's: on the MBP right in the middle under File Sharing : On you will see Matt Falvey Public Folder (with a normal folder icon) and underneath it PowerBookG4 HD (with a HD icon), that is exactly what is turning up on the iMac once I open up the NetworkMBPConnect as - on the iMac. Now I noticed underneath I have the + and - icons, would it be appropriate to delete the PowerBookG4 HD from this Shared Folder, presuming it is now NOT the actual MBP HD and that will get rid of it for ever? But then if it is not the actual MBP HD by another name, why isn't that showing up there in its own right under its own name? (Just checked the Imac and the HD name and the name in the Shared Folders is the same, .) So we have the situation of on the MBP in System preferences under Shared Folders: the MBP being described as PowerBookG4 HD and if you then look at the imac on the Finder window under Shared it has a little (iMac) symbol and MBP. New campus proposal by Apple
Steve Jobs has been busy this week. The day before his WWDC keynote address he made a presentation to the Cupertino City Council about a proposed new campus that will be completed by 2015 if given approval. I liked the comment on that about taxes,... (from MacRumours) http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/08/steve-jobs-pitches-cupertino-on-new-app le-campus/ /quote One of the city councilors asked what the citizens of Cupertino would get from the new campus, and in particular brought up a free Wi-Fi network, like Google offers in Mountain View. Steve responded that Apple was the largest taxpayer in Cupertino and he felt that the tax benefits to having a company like Apple in Cupertino was benefit enough and the city should be providing a service like that. If we can get out of paying taxes, we would be glad to provide free Wi-Fi. /end quote I wonder if I can use that same logic with my council. If I offer free WiFi can I not pay my rates??? :) hehehe. Will be interesting as they put it as it will all be round glass everywhere, no corners. :) At least they have it down pat now as they say, from the work in the stores Kind regards Daniel On 9/6/11 1:15 AM, cm cm200...@gmail.com wrote: Steve Jobs has been busy this week. What Happens to my iDisk and MobileMe websites
found this this morning on TUAWcheersBlittoWhat happens to our iDisk and MobileMe websites with the introduction of iCloud? For now, nothing. All MobileMe accounts have been extended to June 30, 2012, so nothing will change for a year. You'll still have your websites and iDisk information; Apple isn't going to suddenly delete it on you.As far as the long term implications of iCloud on MobileMe, we have heard a few reports from users talking to AppleCare Support that there will be a form of iDisk in iCloud this fall. However, until Apple says so, nothing is official (although we sure can speculate). In the meantime, it's business as usual. Keep using your iDisk and MobileMe websites as if nothing happened Monday. Everything will keep working, at least for another year.I will say this though: lots and lots of Apple employees use iDisk and the MobileMe websites every day. All Apple employees receive a free MobileMe account, and they would be the first ones to give feedback if the services suddenly disappeared. Re: New campus proposal by Apple
Hi Daniel, Yes. I also enjoyed the chair of the council asking Steve Jobs to open an Apple Store in Cupertino. Unfortunately for the chairman who as an obvious Apple supporter, Jobs replied it was unlikely as Cupertino did not have enough population to provide the customer traffic to support the store. Re: How to change HD name of MDP after Import from PowerBookG4
Hi Ronni, with regard to 1. I think I might have resolved it or as we were looking at the wrong thing. I went back to the Old PowerBookG4 and took a ScreenShot of its System Preferences Sharing File Sharing Shared FoldersPowerBookG4 HD Users: System Administrator - Read Write Administrators - Read Write Everyone - Read Only I then revisited the MBP and wondered how could it be so different if all I did was use the Migration Assistant to copy the PBG4 to the MBP, then I realised that on the ScreenShot I had highlighted the Matt Falvey Public Folder and it was listing the users for that folder, (Which looked just as wrong, why would an unknown user have access to my public folder? [see below]) any way the setting for the MBP when I click on the PowerBookG4 are: MBP System Preferences Sharing File Sharing Shared FoldersPowerBookG4 HD Users: System Administrator - Read Write Administrators - Read Write Everyone - Read Only Which is exactly the same format as on my iMac. So I went and checked my two daughters iMac's and their Shared Folders only had their Public Folders, No HD and the Users: (Name), Staff, Everyone, format that you mentioned. So I followed your instruction to Minus and stop sharing the PowerBookG4 and instantly it disappeared from the Shared screen on the iMac and the problem was fixed. I checked that I could still mount the MBP on the iMac and I could without any problems, So then I realised and the lack of an HD on my daughters Shared Folders also confirmed, that I did not need to put the HD into Shared Folders to be able to share it with other computers on the network. So I then took the iMac Macintosh HD off of its Shared folder and thus decreased the amount of icons in the shared section of the Finder window, on a roll here. Then I went back to the MBP and changed the Users in the Matt Falvey Public Folder to Matt Falvey - Read Write, Staff - Read Only and Everyone - Read Only. Now I noticed that you had Everyone as Read and Write, were as all of the Mac's here have Everyone as Read Only, should I change them all or leave them all as is, the same? Ronni, thanks very much for all your help on this, I really appreciate your patience and time. Matt On 08/06/2011, at 4:16 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Matt, On 08/06/2011, at 2:57 PM, Matt Falvey wrote: Hi Ronni, I did follow the instructions step by step and no brackets. Yes, I see by your screenshot you have ;-) I have taken a Screen shot of the Systems preferences Sharing page and you can see that the name has changed successfully. at aft://MBP/ or MBP I went back over the last past of the instructions again and restated the MBP and turned the Modem off, Things have stayed the same. In the Screenshot you sent me of System Preferences “Sharing” I notice two things wrong. 1. Under Shared Folders: Beside the Matt Falvey - Users: Matt Falvey - Read Write (which is correct) Unknown User (Incorrect, should be Staff) Read only (which is correct) Everyone - Read Write (is correct) Now I noticed underneath I have the + and - icons, would it be appropriate to delete the PowerBookG4 HD from this Shared Folder, presuming it is now NOT the actual MBP HD and that will get rid of it for ever? By your screenshot, you are sharing ‘File Sharing ‘Printer Sharing’, so select the PowerBookG4 HD use the - to stop sharing it. You can always + it again if you find it is actually the MBP HD. But then if it is not the actual MBP HD by another name, why isn't that showing up there in its own right under its own name? (Just checked the Imac and the HD name and the name in the Shared Folders is the same, .) Please send me a screenshot “Offlist of this. So we have the situation of on the MBP in System preferences under Shared Folders: the MBP being described as PowerBookG4 HD and if you then look at the imac on the Finder window under Shared it has a little (iMac) symbol and MBP. But once you try to launch it on Network you get the two options as previously described. I’m concerned as to how you transferred what you transferred across to your Daughter’s MBP did the Set Up. Was it her User Account your transferred or ? More confusion. I will email the Screen shots privately as they are not allowed on Wamug. Thanks for sending the screenshots. I’ll email a
Re: Lion available in July
Morning, Yes, Ronni we hear and agree! Not sure or read any to the contrary, but I would assume Apple has a contingency plan. As even in the good ol USA not everybody is connected to a T1 and beyond. There is still a lot of the country connected via dial up speeds, as with ours not in City Range of Exchanges. Even at home, being 15km from Perth; only ADSL 1 Speeds. Which I suppose is better than dial up, although at 135kbits at best 4GB takes a long time. Then there is issue of file size, maintaining the connection, which for a lot in AU will be an issue. So, partial downloads would have to be advisable times number of machines. Hopefully OS X server Lion edition, Software Updates server connects through App store. I cannot see Apple doing something to remove cash flow even just a little. But then again they keep testing those boundaries, especially in Australia and others outside of US. US OS X Lion $29.99 AU OS X Lion $31.99 US to AU dollar about .95 cents, sustainable until at least next year apparently. I know some clients that have 2GB limits. How are they to get a 4GB download?? And sometimes with it charged at excess rates of 15c/MB that makes the remainder 2GB of the download costing them about $300 if they don't realise. As it's purchased through the Mac App Store, then it's not like you burn it DVD for them or something. Maybe I'm missing something here, and more info will become available later. Sure, maybe for the US where download limits are large and internet is cheap. But unfortunately we still have some low limits here in Australia. Again, maybe I'm missing something, or I'm not keeping up with the times but I just think there should be a couple of options. For those that don't realise or unsure about it, doesn't it leave them out of the loop for Lion? I suppose the other problem I see with this, is if you have to download it is that some clients don't want to do that. They feel more comfortable with hiring someone to come out and do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound like I'm complaining about a loss of income or anything. I just know that for some, they may not feel comfortable in downloading and installing. They prefer to call me out to do it. I can't now go out and say,..oh, well I have to sit here for a couple of hours while this downloads. Sure I could say,..well start it downloading and call me when it's finished if you have any problems. I'm guessing that once it's downloaded you can burn the dmg file to install it, but then you wouldn't be able to do that as a) it wouldn't have been paid for, for another client and b) wont' give correct download figures to Apple. Maybe there will be a pay but don't download option. I guess time will tell. Just a couple of things that sprung to mind when I saw it. I mentioned it to another friend of mine who
