For the record – 'sticky key' on iPad2

2011-09-26 Thread Mike Murray
Hi muggers

I've had an odd problem with my new iPad2 over recent days - weirdly the thing
started to do things by itself, like open the mail app, start typing out email
addresses, consistently using the letters V, T and F and lots of spaces.

Others apps started to behave strangely as well. All this was intermittent and
not at all predictable.

I reset the thing a number of times which seemed to improve it, but eventually
I decided I had a hardware problem located around the keys V, F and T (in
landscape mode). Sometimes when I hit one of those keys they would repeat up to
a dozen times. In portrait mode it was perfect. So a touch screen fault of some
sort.

I did find one reference to a similar problem in one of the forums, but
certainly nothing to indicate it's an issue with them. I didn't bother raising
it here as it seemed to be a rare event. But I will now so the problem and
solution are here in the archives.

Took it into the Apple Store today and managed to replicate the problem to one
of the geniuses - presto, new iPad, no question. Great service.

Thanks Apple

Cheers
Mike

Re: youtube music catcher : PowerPoint converted to movie for Apple TV

2011-09-26 Thread peta
Ronni

Thank you so much for this advice.

I have the latest version of MS for Mac 2011 and also Parallels; however I
decided to open the PowerPoint slide show in Keynote.

I only had a half hour or so this afternoon to play around with this. Things
did not open quite as expected -

 3. Playback Uses: Recorded Timing (If you wish to keep the same settings as
 original)
I normally change these settings to ‘Fixed Timing' to fit my slide durations
etc … probably best if you leave the setting as is though.

No option to choose Fixed Timing.

No option to enter full screen mode when opened. No option to: Select -

   Formats: Full Quality, Large
Audio: select - Include audio (sound files, movie audio)
 Include the slideshow soundtrack
Include the slideshow recording

Tomorrow I will start from the beginning by downloading the slideshow again and
following your steps.

I will let you know how it all goes - I am sure it will be fine.

Thank you again Ronni, have a nice evening. Nearly time for a glass of red!

Peta

Has anyone tried to do this? Or is it not possible?

Thanking anyone who would be able to help me with this.

 Hi Peta,

I’m ‘guessing’ you are using Keynote’09 to open the PowerPoint Slide
 Presentation?

If so you can export the slide presentation to Quicktime movie format H264
which Apple TV ’should’ be able to play.
(I don’t have Apple TV so cannot test this out for you). I have exported
numerous Keynote Slide Presentations of my own to Quicktime .mov and then
created DVDs of them using iDVD for viewing on TV screens.

 1. Open the PowerPoint Slide Presentation in Keynote
 2. Go to ’Share’ Export To Quicktime
 3. Playback Uses: Recorded Timing (If you wish to keep the same settings as

I normally change these settings to ‘Fixed Timing' to fit my slide durations

 4. Click ’Next’
 5. Save As: Name.mov
Choose a Location for the saved .mov: Desktop

 6. Click ’Export’
Your Keynote Slide Presentation will be converted and exported to the

HELP - dead iphone? - in Paris

2011-09-26 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi folks,

This is a somewhat forlorn plea - as I think I know the unpalatable answer
:o((

We are in Paris. I have been trying to use my iPhone. It has been hard as
the so-called wi-fi internet at the apartment is an ibook with a 3G modem in
it. I won't go into the details of that - I sort of got it working by
creating a computer to computer network with airport and sharing the
internet to it - it worked after a fashion - enough to do dropbox syncs etc.

HOWEVER - I only mention this in case it has some relevance to my REAL
PROBLEM - my iPhone appears to have totally died.

This morning I was trying to dropbox synch some stuff from the computer to
the phone and noticed that I kept losing the connection - the wifi was
connected and then it wasn't - the phone was a matter of a few cm from the
laptop so signal strength wasn't a problem. Each time I could reconnect OK
but then I would lose the connection in a matter of seconds. I don't know if
this is relevant or not as a sign of something failing. Anyway, I finally
achieved the transfers I wanted and stuck the phone in my pocket.

Around 10-15 minutes later I went to make a phone call and I couldn't wake
the iPhone - pressing the home key, trying to invoke a shutdown/restart by
holding down the power key - nothing happens.

The battery was at about 95% when it went in my pocket - so that's not the
problem.

I've tried plugging the phone into my laptop but it is not recognised by
iTunes or showing as an attached USB device on System profiler.

It seems like the phone is completely powered down and won't switch on.

To channel Monty Python - it has ceased to be - it is an ex iPhone.

I have just checked the receipt and the warranty expired 26th August -
exactly 1 month ago!!

I must admit, I don't feel like paying Apple for another iPnone after just
over a year of VERY light usage. I'm still commited to paying Telstra $49 a
month for the plan (though I guess I could find another phone to stick it
in).

Any body have any ideas/tips/ tricks to bring my iPhone back to life?

Cheers

Neil

Re: HELP - dead iphone? - in Paris

2011-09-26 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Ronni,

That would have fixed it! As it happens, we decided we really had to get out
and see some more of Paris and I ascertained that there was actually an
Apple store underneath the Louvre - right next to an inverted pyramid
letting light into the spacious area - talk about location, location,
location - so a friendly french apple tech had a jiggle around and got it
working - when I asked what the problem was eet is just a leeetle bug - no
need to worry - when I asked him how he had got it to start up he said to
hold the two buttons - which (thanks to your explanation) I now know is a
hard reboot

So, I have no idea what caused it - but at least it is fixed and Georgina
and I can again contact each other if we separate :o))

Many thanks Ronni - I really was worried I had somehow killed my iPhone!!

I certainly agree with this given the current price of hard drives, and the
availability of devices like NewTech's Voyager hard drive caddy. A bare 1Tb
drive will set you back around $60 from Austin Computers, and few of these in
combination with the drive caddy allows for an almost unlimited choice of
backup routines. I have one for Time Machine backups (which is mounted most of
the time), another I swap out once a week for a complete Carbon Copy clone, and
yet another with a full installation of Lion. Then there a couple of 500Gb USB
drives which I use for roaming data storage on my laptop.

There may still be some specific reasons for partitioning a hard drive, but
economy of space is no longer one of them.

Mac Wavelets

2011-09-26 Thread Merv Bond
I have been trying to get a Java application to work but can't get past
the first page. The first page asks for an institution name which I
correctly insert but the Continue button responds with an error sound.
When I quit out I find a .dat file has been created and Kind labels it
as a Mac Wavelets WBIN document of 4 KB. What is a Mac Wavelet?

OSX Lion Firewall.

2011-09-26 Thread Stephen Wonfor
Hi

A new iMac running Lion. The only ports we need open are for SSH (22),
BackToMyMac (443) and Filemaker (5003). Do they get closed when I turn on the
Firewall? Can I preconfigure it? The machine I am tweaking is via BackToMyMac
so I fear losing contact if I do this remotely.
Is there a Lion app that will tell me what ports are open?

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Do you have the above TCP UDP ports open on your Router. (TCP 22, TCP UDP
443, TCP UDP 5003)?
If so and you have “Allowed Incoming Connections” for the applications that use
these ports in the Lion Firewall.
They won’t be closed with the Firewall ON … I hope you haven’t been using Lion
without the Firewall enabled?

The firewall in Lion works basically the same as in OS X 10.5 10.6.
The firewall was changed in OS X from port-specific to application-specific.
So, if you enable a single application, it will be allowed to open any ports it
needs.

The System Preferences panel for Security in Lion OS X 10.7 had its name
changed to Security Privacy” has an extra panel “Privacy”.
I won’t go into detail about all the security settings in this email, just the
Firewall.

The “Firewall” Panel:

It is now application-focussed rather than port-focussed. The Firewall panel
has basic information for the user and two buttons:
Start (or Stop if the Firewall is ON) and Advanced. It is in the advanced
panel, which can be accessed only if the security padlock icon is open, that
the important settings are made or changed.

The Advanced panel has three checkboxes. Above the main (applications) list is
Block all incoming connections.
If this is selected only essential services will be able to use internet access.

The applications list panel allows a program the correct access instead of
specifying port numbers as was the case before Leopard.
There are now two settings for each application in the list:
Allow incoming connections” and Block incoming connections”.
Below this panel are two icons (+/-) for adding applications to or removing
them from the list.
Pressing the Add (+) reveals a panel which allows you to choose an item to be
included.

As software is installed, this adding is usually carried out automatically.
Pressing the remove (-) removes an app with no warning.

Below the applications panel is a second checkbox (related to the Block item at
the top) allowing signed software — software that is known to be trusted — to
receive incoming connections.

One more check box in the Advanced panel allows activation of Stealth mode, so
that any outside probing that occurs (such as that shown in the logs) will have
no response: the computer will not even appear to exist.

So when you sign in to MobileMe and enable 'Back to My Mac', TCP ports 443 and
5354 are used.
For connections between machines, Back to My Mac typically uses UDP port 4500.
If you have used Filemaker you will possibly see ddfmsoc is listed and set for
Allow incoming connections”.

Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products:

I certainly agree with this given the current price of hard drives, and the
availability of devices like NewTech's Voyager hard drive caddy. A bare 1Tb
drive will set you back around $60 from Austin Computers, and few of these
in combination with the drive caddy allows for an almost unlimited choice of
backup routines. I have one for Time Machine backups (which is mounted most
of the time), another I swap out once a week for a complete Carbon Copy
clone, and yet another with a full installation of Lion. Then there a couple
of 500Gb USB drives which I use for roaming data storage on my laptop.

There may still be some specific reasons for partitioning a hard drive, but
economy of space is no longer one of them.
