Hi Peter, I am interested in the Seagate Goflex Satellite as well depends
what you read on the reviews, Cnet doesn't much like it but I have read reviews

I am going to give it a go best price I have seen so far is $205 at
BigW.. cheaper in the US of course$169 at Walmart and $179 at BH New
York.

You are aware that The Seagate GoFlex portable hard drive 500GB

The one downside to using the GoFlex Satellite is that, unlike the Kingston

It's a bummer considering the connected nature of the iPad.

Re: iPAD External Storage

2012-04-26 Thread David Wood
Hi Ronni,

Yep that is a downside I have a quite extensive photo library (34GB) and
music library (78GB) which I often need to refer to when I travel, plus I do
like to take movies and tv shows with me and books to while away the boring
hours of journey time Goflex I see this as a way of doing all this without
tieing up the space on my iPad. I will however have another look at the
Kingston Wi-Drive. has anyone any experience of this model?

I am sure like everything, a new and better model will be along soon, but at
the moment the Goflex seems to fit the bill the best unless of course
someone knows of something else that maybe released in the next 8 weeks before
I set off again?

Re: iPAD External Storage

2012-04-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi David,

Yes, the 500GB compared to 32GB would certainly influence my decision.
There's no denying that the Seagate GoFlex Satellite is much more economical on
a per-MB basis than the Kingston Wi-Drive.
And I would imagine if you are watching movies or listening to music or reading
a book from the drive, you would not need to be online at the same time. So
probably not an issue for you.
Of course it is a larger unit to pack than the Kingston.

Cables: USB 3 - Firewire800

2012-04-26 Thread Merv Bond
I have been looking on the net at cables, converters and hubs that boast
connections between USB and firewire. My search is based on wishing to
connect an external HD with USB3 sockets to my iMac which has a
Firewire800 socket. Has anyone used such a cable and if so is the
performance of a quality that is useful? Can a bootable external HD be
achieved with such a device?

Hi Merv,

As far as I know USB and firewire are incompatible formats. Unless there is
some sort of fancy conversion hub involved (that I am not aware of) no cable
will be able to connect the two.

Hi Merv

As others have mentioned there is no way to convert from USB to Firewire I'm
afraid. Different standards etc.
So a USB3 drive will only run at USB2 speed on a Mac (well most of them).

ipad sim in europe

2012-04-26 Thread hugh griffiths

Hi my parents are traveling in Europe and my mum has taken her ipad with
her, she purchased a local sim but has been told she cant activate it
without connection to a computer and itunes, I thought it was possible
to do this manually, but a quick search using google doesn't shed enough
light on it for me to advise them, as I don't want to steer them the
wrong way and for them to purchase another sim that doesn't work. They
will be mainly in the UK and then Spain, then France and finally Italy (
but they wont need a sim in italy, I don't think, as they are staying with
friends who are sure to have wifi). Does anyone have experience with
setting up ipad2 with latest OS and new sim purchased in UK and or Spain
 and or France?

Re: 1Password

2012-04-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Lynn,

Short answer; Yes!
Longer answer follows below ;-)

What 1Password License do I need?

A 1Password for Mac single-user license allows you to install and use it on as
many Macs as you own. We like to call this our Sane Licensing Model™--there is
only one of you, so we think you should need only one license for 1Password for
Mac to use it on all your Macs!

If you are not the only person using 1Password for Mac, then you require
additional single-user licenses or a family license for 1Password for Mac.

1Password for Windows:
1Password for Windows requires a separate license.

Note: Your 1Password license is platform-specific. This means that you need a
1Password for Mac license to register 1Password in OS X and a 1Password for
Windows license to register 1Password in Windows.

1Password for iOS:

1Password for iPhone and 1Password for iPad are sold separately. They can be
purchased from Apple's iTunes App Store.

Family License:
The family license allows up to five family members living in the same
household to use 1Password. Each family member will not receive their own
license. After purchasing a family license from our store, you will receive
your license and receipt via e-mail.
Share this license with your family so that they can register 1Password using
their own computers or user accounts.

Ronni

Yes, 1Password for the Mac and your iOS devices are separate purchases. There
is no bulk licensing AFAIK (though it's not a bad idea!).

There's no compulsion to use Dropbox for your syncing, but you will need to
have access to a wireless network in order to sync your iOS devices and your
computer.

Hi Merv and Peter,

I would be wary of those connectors. Notice they are all on resale sites, none
are manufacturer sales. They could be fakes.

As I said earlier, I don't believe it is possible to convert USB to Firewire
with just a simple pin-to-pin cable. USB used the PC as the bus master whereas
Firewire is a true peer-to-peer connection and required handshaking signals
back from the disk drive.

Re: Cables: USB 3 - Firewire800

2012-04-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Got in before I did Carlo :) So won't rehash what you've written,..lol :)
But yes, I'd be a bit cautious. The other thing would be if you'd see any real
world speed difference. The USB3 would only be running at USB2 speed as that
is what the Mac would expect, so it's not going to convert to Firewire
speeds, so I think you'd still be gaining USB2 speeds anyway. So no real
improvement.
I could be wrong here, but I also had the impression there were differing data
versus power consumptions through both a USB and Firewire cable. (ie one pulls
through or expects more power and data then the other). So wouldn't want to fry
anything if there was. Again, I could be wrong there,...

Found this info as well, which may help with it...
/quote
Firewire is isochronous, basically meaning that you can pump clocked data
though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up
into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that
is, the wait for the data to be put back together.) Second, the Firewire
protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with
minimal intervention of the CPU.
/end quote

I can't lay my hands on the other info I thought I had and Siri can only do so
much when driving,..lol ;)

Re: ipad sim in europe

2012-04-26 Thread cm
Hi Hugh,

I have had no direct experience with this as when I travelled with my iPad I
relied on wifi at the hotel, but here is a forum post I found.

I called into our apple store yesterday and asked how to activate a sim card in
Europe and was advised that most of the major providers will allow you to
contact them using the ipad and their sim card to activate it even though it
will not connect to any other site until activated.

It was also suggested that Vodaphone has a very good coverage in Europe and
many store outlets.

Here is a link to that page

The power issue is the one I would be the most cautious with, USB is 5 v or
less, but firewire can be up to 40 V ( different ampages as well and I would be
very worried as the pins for power would be different as well)

handshaking signals back from the disk drive.

Re: ipad sim in europe

2012-04-26 Thread Jane Griffiths
Hi Hugh

I used my iPad on a visit to the UK last year. I called in at an O2 store
(their equivalent of Telstra) and purchased a pay as you go data sim for the
iPad. The sim was activated via the iPad with no connection to computer
required. The staff at the store were very helpful and the process was simple.
The O2 account was wholly managed via the iPad.
O2 coverage was excellent throughout the UK.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience of iPad data sim usage in other parts
of Europe.

Cheers
Jane

light on it for me to advise them, as I don't want to steer them the
wrong way and for them to purchase another sim that doesn't work. They
will be mainly in the UK and then Spain, then France and finally Italy (
but they wont need a sim in italy, I don't think, as they are staying with
friends who are sure to have wifi). Does anyone have experience with
setting up ipad2 with latest OS and new sim purchased in UK and or Spain
 and or France?

Re: ipad sim in europe

2012-04-26 Thread Tim law
Be aware that data is very expensive in Europe.

Foreigners have trouble buying a SIM in Europe. I got a local friend to buy me
an Orange SIM in France. I added €40 and it had gone by the morning. !!

The big difference is that data is charged by time and a flag fall applies. The
iPhone does various checks frequently and each time the flag fall chewed up my
€40 overnight. Eeek

I ended up turning on airport mode and relying on hostel wifi. Some cities,
such as Geneva, have free city wide wifi.
