Epson Workforce Printers

2014-02-25 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

There was some discussion on this list in May of last year about the Epson
Workforce range of printers and the fact that they were supposedly much more
economical in terms of consumables.

If anybody went on to buy one of these, I'd be interested to hear how they went.

Cheers,

Andrew

Mac OS Server expert?

2013-02-12 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

I'd like to find someone who can help me with setting up and configuring Mac OS
Server 10.8. The documentation is not particularly helpful, and I don't have
time right now to research it in any detail.

If anybody does this kind of work, please contact me off list.

Cheers,

Andrew

It does need to be uninstalled correctly to get rid of all the associated

I've used this uninstaller and still found some associated MacKeeper

as I mentioned above which needed to be manually trashed.

I would suggest you get rid of MacKeeper completely, do a “Repair

27 inch screen?

2012-04-15 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation from personal experience for a good 27 inch
screen? I've been doing a bit of online research and there are a lot out there.

The Apple screen is expensive, but there are conflicting reports about its
reflectiveness. My use is mainly writing and programming, so clarity and
resolution are more important to me than perfect colour reproduction. Cost is
not really a consideration.

Cheers,

Andrew

I think it depends on what resolution you need, the cheaper screens will only
do 1920x1200 at the moment I only know of two that will go to 2560 x 1440 and
they are the Apple 27 screen and the Dell 27. We have one of the Dell's at
the office and it's not too bad but the Apple screen is better.

 Thats my opinion anyway :)

Slightly off topic - Can access printer over wireless

2011-11-06 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

We have an ADSL modem/router at our office (a Netcomm NB9WMAXXn, in fact).

We have some Macs connected via ethernet, and some via wireless. In either
case, the Macs get an appropriate IP address from the DHCP server on the modem.

If I connect my macbook pro via ethernet, I can access printers and use a
little chat app (which uses UDP), but if I connect via wireless, I can't access
the printers or other chat users, although I still can access some network
things (such as our database server, and networked disks). I have no idea why
this is so.

I've checked Netcomm's support site, and have googled myself senseless, to no
avail...

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Trent,

Thanks for this. Preliminary fiddling with the IGMP options does not appear to
have any effect.

I'll play with it a bit more before throwing it away and getting a replacement.

Next question: any suggestions on a make/model of modem which IS compatible
with bonjour service discovery?

Cheers,

Andrew

Check to see if your modem has an option for IGMP somewhere in the settings
you can try turn it off/on to fix, if not, you will likely need to purchase a
new modem that is not broken (some modem/routers break this feature because
 they are stupid).

You'll likely find iTunes music sharing is broken also.

You could also just supplement by tacking an additional wireless router onto

Then just turn wifi off on the modem

 12, 2005’ speech.

It was my Birthday; and I had returned home from Hospital after another
operation for my battle with cancer, which had recurred after years of
remission, and losing my husband to cancer in 2003.
My prognosis was not the best and I was trying to come to terms with it, and
learn how to deal with it and move forward; this time without the support of
 my darling husband.

I can not remember how I came across the Video Speech, but to this day I
 remember Steve Jobs words;

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith… You’ve
got to find what you love.”

All of Steve’s speech was inspirational, but these particular words
 motivated me beyond belief.
I decided to change my life ... 'take on' Cancer again and beat it, and
since I had lost one love, find what I love doing and learn to do it to the
 best of my ability.
I knew I loved Macs and everything to do with Apple, but I had never had the
time to really pursue this passion.
Well, the rest is history, I threw my energies into ‘living with cancer' and
doing something I really love … working with Macs and anything Apple.

I still have the Video Speech and watched it again this morning after
hearing the sad news of Steve losing his battle with cancer.
Steve you were, and always will be an inspiration to me … Rest In Peace!

Also, any suggestions on specific brands of media to use?

Hi Stuart,

Have you tried MacSpeech? I have heard that it is very good (and has a medical
module too), but of course, that may just be the marketing people doing their
job well. We are almost ready to purchase MacPractice, and they recommend
MacSpeech as their voice recognition software.

Cheers,

Hi Stuart,

I travel a lot within Australia, and find Around Me to be very useful.
Basically it looks up where you are, and then you can browse restaurants,
coffee shops etc. It tells you how far away they are, with some additional
info, and a map to see where you are going. I love it.

Trackpad click pressure on MacBook Pro

2010-11-17 Thread Andrew Schox

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this, and if I can do anything about it.

If I just click my trackpad, often it doesn't seem to register with the system.
A more vigorous click (i.e. with more pressure) does. This never used to happen
with my trackpad, at least as far as I can recall (my Macbook is about 12
months old, and is used a lot every day).

Contact/relationship manager suggestion?

2010-10-24 Thread Andrew Schox

Hi all,

I have just been appointed as the president of our national professional body.
This involves quite a lot of phone calls, correspondence etc to individuals and
organisations.

I would like to find some software that will let me keep track of who I have
contacted, how and when.

I will either be using a MacBook Pro or an iPad for this task.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Andrew

Telstra iPhone data usage

2010-10-04 Thread Andrew Schox

Hi all,

I have had a Telstra iPhone 4 for five days, and got a message today saying I'd
used 93% of my 1.5GB data plan. Previous to this I had a 1.5GB Optus data plan
which I never exceeded in two years.

My data usage has been probably less than what I usually used on Optus as I
have frequently been accessing the net via WiFi.

Has anybody else experienced similar issues. I can't believe I've used that
much data in 5 days.

I'll have to organise to spend a few hours tomorrow getting transferred from
one department to another at Telstra's friendly phone support service...

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: Telstra iPhone data usage

2010-10-04 Thread Andrew Schox

Hi Daniel,

I do use mail, and had push set to on. I had set the fetch schedule to
Manually, which I thought protected me, since I never get any mail unless I
click the check mail button in mail.

Cheers,

Andrew

 Hi Andrew

Do you have email set up?
If so, have you gone and changed the checking of it from Push to Manual.
If it's set to Push, then it's checking it all the time!!

 You can check in:-
 Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
I generally have Fetch New Data set to Off.
Then click on Fetch New Data. Change this to Manually.
Then click on Advanced. Then change each account to Manually.
This means email won't check, until you actually open up Mail to look at it.
This stops it from checking all the time, and can help with data usage.

Try that and see how it goes (if you're using Mail of course).
If not, ignore everything I said :O)

 Kind Regards
 Daniel

Re: iPhone 4 V 3GS

2010-09-29 Thread Andrew Schox

Rob,

I can't answer this question specifically, but I've just upgraded from a 3G to
a 4 today. Foolishly, I had previously upgraded the 3G to iOS 4.x, which made
it unbearably slow, with horrible bugs in Mail.

The 4 is MUCH faster than the 3G, and the screen is beautiful on the 4.

I'm loving it :-)

Has anyone owned both and got an opinion about just how much better the 4 is?
I've looked up comparisons on the net but it's all just specs which I confess
 wash over me.
What's the real life feeling of the 2?

Sick Mac Mini Question

I have an Intel Mac mini which suddenly started having kernel panics (even when
trying to boot from a DVD). I managed to erase the hard disk, reinstall the OS,

now I am back to the kernel panics again.

Does this sound like a hardware problem?

still under warranty fire it in to an Authorised Apple Hardware Tech and
they can diagnose it for you pretty quickly.

If you want to play with this more yourself you could try reseating the RAM

 Good luck.

Also, does Mail misbehave when it gets a large amount of mail in it (as in

corrupted preference files. By trashing the pref files restarting you

So - a complete disc erase/reformat and fresh install from the original

Hopefully this isn't the problem for you - but I just thought I'd mention it

intermittant/erratic problems can be very hard to troubleshoot.

telephone system. This plugs from the little sound output plug on the back
into the phone system, and has worked faultlessly until we had a technician
in to play around with the system yesterday.

It appears that the mac no longer outputs sound from the port. If I pull the
plug out, the sound plays through the speakers, but if I plug it back in, no
sound is forthcoming. I have checked with iphone earphones an I am not
getting anything there either.

I have two questions:

1. Could something to do with the phone system have fried my sound output?

2. If this might be the case, who should I send it to to try to fix it?

Thanks,

Andrew

Some TV¹s allow you to adjust the Overscan or Turn Off Overscan.

If Andrew (the original poster) is using iDVD 8 he can get around it

iDVD 8 now allows movie files to be added to iDVD slideshows.
The benefit from that is you can set the slideshow to be scaled to the

That will prevent the movies from experiencing the TV Overscan.

Bob,

So on your TV screen that you are watching the DVD on, do you watch
digital TV or just analogue TV .

I've tried both, including an old CRT TV, and a new 60 inch Plasma. I've
also tried it on different DVD players.

If you watch digital TV what is the picture like by comparison with an
 analogue station ??

It seems quite similar.

Hope this helps.

Re: Ethermax Ethernet Docking Station and BigPond Next G

2008-10-01 Thread Andrew Schox
Neil,

I use this product at home, although I didn't like having to fork out an
extra $299 just because Telstra forces you to use a USB modem. Once it is
all set up, however, you can configure your network as you wish.

I find that the modem itself needs to be rebooted from time to time
(sometimes more than once a day, sometimes not for several days).

To summarise, if you are keen to use an outrageously expensive, slow service
with a low bandwidth quota (I think we pay $100 a month for 3 Gigs) like
Telstra, then go for it. Unfortunately there was no other option where I
live...

have programmed (by hand) my website using HTML, PHP and javascript

I have Microsoft Visual C++ .net programs, and while I've written
a number of applications in that, they again are only text based (run
in the DOS screen), and I find the whole business of driving the

 be bothered with.

Now that I have the iMac, I would like to develop some programs
(mainly for my own use) that have a graphical interface. These
programs would mainly manipulate midi and wave files, and hence need
to be able to work at the bit and byte level. The programs are not
doing anything particularly complex, so processing speed is not a
 major consideration.

I was wondering if there is a relatively easy program to use that
is not too expensive, and that doesn't require that I fight all the
project control complexity as if I was writing a system for the
 Australian Government.

An equivalent of Visual Basic would be fine, provided it could
 handle:
 (a) binary files (eg wave files and midi files)
 (b) manipulate at bits and bytes.
 (c) its not too expensive

Can anyone suggest a suitable compiler etc from their experience
 that would meet my needs?

I tried Administrator, Admin, administrator, admin, and a

iPhoto Problem

2008-01-27 Thread Andrew Schox
Greetings all,

I just got back from a holiday in Europe. I diligently downloaded my photos
most days (from a Canon IXUS 50) to iPhoto. I now notice that on a (large)
number of photos, I can see the preview in iPhoto, but then get a giant
exclamation mark when I try to view it. Any idea what this means (something
terrible, I presume)?

Re: iPhoto Problem

2008-01-27 Thread Andrew Schox
Thanks for the replies folks!

I first took Robert's advice and had a look for individual files which were
missing. I can't find them anywhere. I then rebuilt the iPhoto library as
per Martin's advice. The problem remains. Since there are thumbnails, I
assume that the images were successfully removed from the camera. There are
examples of some intact and some missing images in single camera import
sessions.

I am running iPhoto 7.1.1 and MacOS 10.5.1 on a 2.2GHz Intel MacBook.

Since we have successfully used iPhoto for years to import and manage all of
our photos, I find this extremely disturbing.

I'll do some more checks and keep you posted. Any further advice will be
most gratefully received.

Vlad et al,

No Virgin coverage here either (Banjup, WA). :-(

Andrew.

Virgin may have released plans, but they don't reach my block. I just
checked. I can assure you that Telstra are the ONLY kids on my block.

Telstra/BigPond's download limits per dollar cost are atrocious. $150
monthly for 3 gigs. I will be following Andrew's lead by complaining
loudly and often about this corporate rip-off. And I will take the
first practicable opportunity to jump ship.

Meanwhile, it's the only game in town for me, so I'll play along.

Re: Experiences with Next G Relocatable Wireless Broadband Software ?

2007-10-18 Thread Andrew Schox
Dear all,

I too have had to resort to Telstra wireless, since I live in Banjup. I have
added the ethernet adapter from Maxon, which helps matters as far as setting
up a local network, but find the setup to be unreliable, not particularly
speedy, and outrageously expensive for only 3 gig of traffic per month.

I complained to Telstra about their price and low traffic limit, and they
told me that since I was getting a full service product, where I could
access their other sites for free, I was actually getting a bargain.

I guess you can charge whatever you like if there is no competition...

Andrew

Very reassuring to see someone else trying Next G Relocatable
Wireless Broadband. I thought I was alone.

I have been using Next G RWBroadband for twelve days. During that
time the only dramas with the software have been two or three
occasions when the Connection Manager would not respond to being
switched off, thus requiring force quits. No big deal, as I may have
contributed to the freezes by trying to do too many things with too
many apps. Installation was simple. At present, I am switching
between ISDN (Westnet) and BigPond Next G Wireless, but I will go
solo with Wireless in a few weeks. I regret leaving my Westnet account.

The speeds I get are highly variable. A few moments ago I was getting
1484 kbps download and 343 kbps upload (Speakeasy http://
www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/). Two days ago download speeds were
about 700 kbps. Overall, download speeds have ranged from about 300
kbps to 1700 kbps. Upload speeds are more consistently around 340 kbps.

A few weeks back he kindly brought his modem over and we did an
install on my G5 PPC iMac...got an average of 3 bars reception
strength...seemed to work well and speed measured an average around
 220kbps
As my current dialup speed is around 20kbps, this seemed like
 lightning.

 BUT...

During installation of the BigPond/Modem software (latest version at
the time), we got a kernel panic and also got
another one on closing the connection down when we finished.

These are the first and only kernel panics I have ever had on this

This did not fill me with confidence about the BigPond Wireless
 experience.

So my question is...how are people who are using the Next G

Is it more stable than I experienced, or was that a bit of a one off ?

I think I will have to make the jump soon...I may go mad if I have to

Airport Question

2007-08-26 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

Perhaps somebody on this list has solved the following problem and can shed
some light on the matter. For everybody else, apologies for the nerdiness of
this query...

I have two airport extremes (a new flat rectangular one, and an older
circular one). I would like to the second one to extend the network of the
first one. Both are set to Participate in a WDS network. The first one I
have set to a WDS mode of WDS main and the remote airport ID (of the
second one) is entered in the WDS remotes list. The second one is set to a
WDS mode of WDS remote with the first one's airport ID entered. The base
stations are currently about a metre apart from each other.

Unfortunately, the first one gives the following WDS error: This base
station is set up as part of a WDS network but no other base stations were
found. I can connect to either base station from various Macs and a PC with
no problems. I haven't found any solution to this conundrum from the
documentation or Apple's support database. By the way, I have tried setting
them both to use channel 1 or various combinations of 1, 6 and 11.

Andrew

Re: Next G and broadband

2007-06-01 Thread Andrew Schox
Darrel and others,

I am seeking info. on the experiences of anyone who has broadband via
Next G and utilising a wireless modem, as in desktop situation.
Bigpond indicate whilst they support MAC intheir mobile plans, they
 don't in their modem plans.
The info. I would appreciate relates to Speed, and ease of Setup.

There is a beta version of the Mac connection software available for the
modem. I have recently started using Testra Next G because there was no
alternative (I live in Banjup: it was either this or carrier pigeons...).

I don't like the fact that the modem is USB, although I have heard that
there will be a hardware Ethernet adapter available soon.

The connection software won't allow other networks to be available when it
connects, so if you want the connection to be shared with other machines,
you need to get the connection started first, and then turn on your router
or whatever. I have had troubles with sharing over wireless, too. The
reliability of the connection is not particularly impressive, so that I need
to reboot and start again once every day or two.

Once the thing is working, however, I get fairly good speeds.

Telstra's customer support is (as usual) essentially non existent. The only
real people I have ever been able to interact with are mindless sales drones
who generally don't understand the products that they are trying to sell
you.

If you have specific queries with set up etc, please drop me a line off
list.

Has anybody had their save and save as file menu items disappear in Word
(2004, v 11.1)? The machine in question is running 10.4.2. There is a save
as web page item in the menu still. Microsoft auto update reports that the
latest version is installed. Should I be trashing some prefs files or
something? I've tried restarting both word and the mac itself.

In Word, go to ToolsCustomizeCustomize Toolbars/Menus
Click on the Commands tab and then drag the Save and Save As commands to
the Menubar in a toolbar that should appear just under the real menubar to
reinstate them back where you need them.

Perhaps someone previously mucked around in here and deleted these items
from your menu. Or it could be just Microsoft software wonkiness. :-)

multifunction device suggestions

Re: Changing to IMAP

2005-06-10 Thread Andrew Schox

Antony,

I use Eudora here at home with a POP3 setup.

I also have an account at work (Outlook). I could always run Eudora
at work (XP) if that makes things better / more reliable.

The problem seems to be even with some good forwarding filters I
don't always get / have access to important e-mail while I'm at work.

I'm considering changing over to IMAP and setting all the misc, non
work related stuff to be downloaded from the server immediately (at
home) leaving the other stuff on the server making it accessible
from both ends.

Anyone got some recommendations / comments before I do the switch?

Personally, I use POP3 at both home and work as follows:

My home account checks the following
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] from work

My work account checks the following
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] from home

This arrangement lets me see incoming mail wherever I am, and delete
stuff as it comes in (rather than go through it again via IMAP and
delete it later). If I want to send (or forward) something to either
home or work, I use my forwarding addresses.

I tried other combinations (including just using a web client), but
this setup suits me. Of course it might not suit you!

Andrew

Re: Question regarding what type of database to use

2005-06-03 Thread Andrew Schox

Rod,

I figure I can accomplish this quiet easily with a Filemaker/
Filemaker Server combo, but price is a consideration ($0 would make
the boss very happy!). There are two solutions I am considering:

Unless you are already familiar with programming, SQL etc. you would
be better off paying for Filemaker, rather than spend a lot of time
learning all this stuff. However, you might find this a fun hobby,
too! By the way, as other (also expensive) alternatives to Filemaker,
you might consider 4th Dimension or Omnis.

a) Using Webobjects, so all I need on the client machines are a web
browser

Learning WebObjects is not a trivial matter, either. As a general
rule, unless you want to do this for a living, or have more time and
money than you know what to do with, then steer away from such things.

b) Using REALBasic to create a front end for an SQL database.
Being a multi platform language, REALBasic might be a good
solution, as I can also tailor the interface to what we need

I have been doing this for a while. REALBasic makes a very good tool
to create client software for databases, and there a lots of
databases to choose from, including free ones. Download the
REALBasic demo and have a play with it yourself. REAL Software also
hosts a couple of very good mailing lists, with lots of helpful people.

Anybody here had experience with either solution? Are they
difficult to implement? Can anybody point me to a good resource
for SQL (especially on the Mac), as I'm a bit 'green' when it comes
to SQL.

There's plenty on the web, but I always think that a nice book by
your side is very helpful. In general, I'd prefer to buy a decent
book published by some one such as O'Reilly (who also have a
subscription service), than one of those cube-shaped, Teach yourself
everything in 24 hours type of books that are available at places
like Dymocks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Feel free to pester!

Cheers,

Andrew

Tiger and Safari Query

2005-05-05 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

I upgraded to Tiger and now when I try to launch Safari, it launches fine,
but asks for a password with the explanation: Safari wants to use keychain
login. It doesn't like any password that I enter, and if I click cancel, I
can continue to use Safari as normal.

Anybody have any idea what this means?

Cheers,

Andrew

Moving iTune library to PC?

2005-04-25 Thread Andrew Schox
Greetings,

I would like to move my iTunes library over to a PC laptop which I can then
leave next to the stereo. Is it possible to just do a straight copy?

Thanks,

Andrew

CRT Screens anyone?

2005-04-04 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi Guys,

I have some screens available for the discerning collector:

- A 19 inch Diamond View (? Mitsubishi) in very good condition;

- An Apple 17 inch AV which is still quite serviceable;

- An Apple 17 inch screen which takes a while to get its act together, but
is otherwise perfect for a server etc.

All these are free to a good home (although I wouldn't mind a bottle of wine
for the 19 incher).

Please contact me off list if you are interested.

Thanks,

Andrew
