Re: Epson Stylus Pro 3880

2010-07-13 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Rosalyn

Something similar happened to me last week. My Epson 1270 kept stopping half
way through a printed page. I tried all the same things you have, including
permissions etc. etc., but to no avail.

I went to the epson site and re-installed the recommended software. I then did
a software update and installed the Apple recommended update. And it all went
back to normal.

It may have been that I had not printed a multiple page document since
installing 10.6.4 combo update.

It may be worth a try.

I certainly understand your frustration.

Re: Help please

2010-06-05 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Laura and others

It may also be worth trying a start up and resetting the parameter RAM.

Set the system preferences to start from the working external drive (system
preferences/startup drive). Then shut the machine down and restart while
holding Command + Option + P + R.

Wait until the starting chimes sound 3 times. Then let the machine continue the
starting process from there.

When you are able, reset the start up drive to the internal drive again, then
try re-starting.

There are a few different ways to achieve this but the object is to reset the
parameter RAM, which will not harm anything.

You may have already tried this of course of course.

If it works, repair permissions then update to 10.6.3 using the Combo update
(ask if you need help with where to get that) then repair permissions again.

Kind regards

Greg

 Hi Laura,

The mother board and memory modules are still good otherwise you wouldn't
 have got going.

By the sound of it, it is down to the internal hard drive. Good on you for
having a backup drive to boot from and hopefully with all of your essential
 documents still safe.

With the computer now booting is the other drive visible? If yes, it probably
has a corrupt file essential for running/starting up the computer, simply
reinstall the operating system. (not so likely as it died during operation,
 as you said)

If not then can you see the HD using Disk Utility? (find this in
applications/utility or on the install disks) If yes, get Disk Utility to do
 a repair.

If Disk Utility can't see the HD then the HD could have died. Apple had a
huge amount of problems with these drives. Is it still under warranty? Even
if it is not under warranty I would hassle Apples as there is a implied
warranty that HD should not die even after 3 years.

If they won't come to the party, 2.5 inch SATA drives are relatively cheap
and simple to install on the MB, hopefully this will be the last resort.

We have reached a watershed moment in the long history of the Western
Australian Macintosh Users Group of WA.

For many years, WAMUG has enjoyed the use of the facilities provided by
Curtin University, most particularly those we currently enjoy in the Geology
Seminar Room, but also other rooms, lecture theatres, etc around the campus.
For many years we have been able to do so simply by arranging with the
Security Department to allow us access, adnd this has not involved a cost.

As discussed at the May General Meeting, it seems that we have been living a
charmed life for quite some time, and that unbeknown to us, a cost has in
fact been due for the use of Curtin's facilities. Consequently, as of the
next meeting (June 1) we will be required to pay a fee of $63.00 per hour for
the use of the facility we currently enjoy. As our meetings generally run for
90 minutes or so, it won't take very long before our funds become severely
depleted at this rate, given the current level of financial membership.

It seems our options are limited to the following:

 1. increase the Membership Fees to cover costs.

Admittedly, the committee has not been vigorous in chasing members for fees,
and we are extremely grateful to those who have been diligent and remained
financial. This has allowed us to cover such costs as Web Site costs, domain
registration, the Annual Barbecue, etc. The members' fees have been our only
source of funding. Given that the current membership fee level has been
sufficient to allow us to operate comfortably, and that our operating costs
have been low for many years, we are reluctant to increase the fees to a
level that would cover the future use of Curtin's facilities.

 2. Introduce a system of paid membership for belonging to the WAMUG Mailing
 List

WAMUG has never charged anyone for membership of the WAMUG Mailing List, and
this is something we guard jealously. We are aware that the WAMUG list has a
nation-wide, and even international, reputation for being a friendly,
knowledgeable source of reference for all things related to the Macintosh,
and more recently of course, Apple's many related products. The logistics of
of trying to administer a fee of any sort for belonging to the Mailing List
are simply too difficult for us to contemplate, and is a pathway of
 unnecessary complexity.

 3. Introduce a door charge for attendance at the monthly General Meetings

This would seem to be the most practical and most easily managed option
available to us at the moment, and is the course of action we intend to adopt
in the first instance. As from the next meeting on Tuesday, 1 June 2010, we
will ask each member attending the meeting for an entrance fee of $5.00 each,
and will allow us to continue to use the excellent facilities at Curtin,
which I'm sure everyone who regularly attends the meetings will agree, are
 first class.

 4. Find another venue.

This is a much less desirable option, but is something will have to explore
with some urgency if option 3 does not work, or results in markedly reduced
attendance. Curtin University is relatively central, easily accessible with
few parking problems, and we are familiar with the facilities it offers. We
would have the same problems with admission fees as well, which may well be
even higher if we want somewhere with facilities which match those of Curtin.

 5. Reduce WAMUG to a Mailing List activity only, doing away with the Monthly
 Meetings.

I sincerely doubt if anyone who is currently a member of WAMUG, either
financial or not, would want to see this happen. The monthly meeting is an
important WAMUG event both socially and functionally, and greatly looked
forward to by those who attend regularly, if the personal feed back I get is
anything to go by. This option is offered mainly in the interests of
completion, rather than as a point of serious contemplation at this stage.

The members of the committee feel that a $5.00 entrance fee would be bearable
by everyone who attends, and is not out of proportion to that charged by many
similar organisations who have to pay for the use of hired facilities, and is
based on the attendance at the meeting of at least 12 people. Of course, if
attendance were to increase to the level of, say, thirty people regularly

Re: Emptying Trash

2010-03-18 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Jon

For question 2. Have you tried downloading the 10.5.8 Combo Update and
installing that manually. You can download it from here
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058comboupdate.html.
You can still do an archive and install to save your important settings etc.
Just follow the prompts after running the disk image file.

Question 1. I should leave to someone with more experience, but have you
considered reformatting the external drive after saving anything you want to

Re: Epson Copy Utility

2009-10-02 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello again Severin

This is from Viewscan's Help facility.

Turn VueScan into a 'photocopier'

VueScan can be used to send images and documents directly to your
printer, effectively turning it into a photocopier.

Here's how to do it:

Change input mode

Select the Input tab on the Option panel
Set Input | Task to Copy to printer

snip Etc. Etc.

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/html/vuesc5.htm#topic2

Is Epson's app better? I'll have to have a look.

Thanks for that Greg. I have used Vuescan in the past and am
currently using SilverFast AI Studio for all my regular scanning.
In fact the Epson software works well too. However, Copy Utility
is especially useful as it makes the scanner behave like a
photocopier, which is very convenient for documents, multiple
copies and the like. I would be surprised if Epson do not have a
specific Leopard or Snow Leopard version but am unable to access it.

Ok, on to your Mail App. Nuisance. First thanks for sending
your screenshots, I can now see what you mean.
Unfortunately you are probably not going to like what I am going
to tell you.
The width of columns in the Address Book pane in Mail can only
be changed on a per-session basis; after you quit Mail, they
will revert to their original values.
There is no way to set the default width of columns for Address
Book. The same applies to the Signature Prefs columns.

You can't set the default column widths in the Address Book pane
used by Mail or the Signature Prefs; any changes you make are
for that session only.

You could possibly experiment with a different font size.

The Address pane is the one that is the biggest nuisance, as I
use it several times a day.

This little tip might help you: An easy way to add recipients to
the To, Cc, and Bcc fields is to click in the desired field (in
a new email) and click Address Book in the toolbar.
That opens the Address (Book) panel, from which you can 'double
click' a person to have his or her e-mail address inserted.

I'm using Mail v4.1 in Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.1 I notice my
AddressBook opens with a wider 'Group' column than your
AddressBook 'Group' column.

I've attached screenshots of my AddressBook from Mail
Signature Prefs for Mail at opening of Mail for you to see the
slight difference (which is probably due to updated version of
Mail).

If I find a plugin or something that might be able to change the
default I will let you know.

2009-09-18 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello WAMUGers

There is something that has been an annoyance to me for quite some time.

When I am using Apple Mail (Version 2.1.3 (753.1) on my old G4 (which
I use for emails, see specs below), I have trouble getting the window
settings in the Mailpreferences and Mailaddress book areas of Mail
to hold.

I go to Address Book from the Mail tool Bar and the columns are all
squashed up to the left of the window. I reset them but the next time
I go there, with or without a re-start/log-out/re-boot, they're all
squashed up again. This means that I can't see the full email address
or signatures panes. So I have to re-size each and every time. Not
the end of the world but a damn nuisance.

This has been going on for a few years now, through Panther, Tiger
and Leopard on a G5.

I've trashed preferences and plists, upgraded the Operating system
many times, searched google, etc., etc. But this has me stumped.

Am I missing something or is this the way things are supposed to be?
I've never actually checked on someone else's system.

Could some kind person please check their machine to see if this is
normal. Sorry to bother you all with this. Now I am the nuisance.

Re: speaker on i-mac 17 2GH intel

2009-09-18 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Martin

Do you get sound if you insert earphones? If yes, then the operating
system is probably OK.

Your start-up chime should also work if there is no hardware problem.
And that is independent of the operating system.

Try using some headphones or an external amplifier and re-boot.

Sometimes the earphone jack (female) can be faulty or starting to
corrode and the switch turning on and off the internal speakers just
needs a clean.

If this is the case inserting the earphone plug and withdrawing it a
few times can get it working.

Good luck.

Re: Mail App. Nuisance.

2009-09-18 Thread Greg Manzie

Thank you Brett, Eugene and Ronni

I have tried moving the preferences to the desktop and the trash many
times before, on the G4 and G5 (I no longer have the G5) but I'm not
100% certain that I quit mail first. So I'll try again on the G4
tomorrow.

I moved the prefs from the system library as well but to no avail.

I am writing this from my new MacBook Pro (see below for specs) and it
has the same problem. Although the default type setting that it
reverts too is slightly different.

That could be because I have saved my preferences from previous
computers to new machines in the past.

I'll try the suggested prefs move on the MacBook next. Then I'll get
back to you.

Make sure you:
1. Quit Mail first
2. Drag the com.apple.mail.plist from your /Users/yourusername/

3. Set things in Mail the way you like, then quit Mail.

Does it properly save it this time? If so, your Mail prefs is
corrupted.
If not, you can drag the prefs file from the Desktop back to the
appropriate folder, replacing the new one that was created.

Hi Greg,

I'm not certain but I'm guessing the preference you will have to

redefining the column widths and it was the preference that
immediately updated itself when I closed the window)

My only concern would be that in deleting this preference you would
lose some of your valuable mail settings. I guess you should back
it up before deleting.

all squashed up to the left of the window. I reset them but the
next time I go there, with or without a re-start/log-out/re-boot,
they're all squashed up again. This means that I can't see the
full email address or signatures panes. So I have to re-size each
and every time. Not the end of the world but a damn nuisance.

This has been going on for a few years now, through Panther, Tiger
and Leopard on a G5.

I've trashed preferences and plists, upgraded the Operating system
many times, searched google, etc., etc. But this has me stumped.

Am I missing something or is this the way things are supposed to
be? I've never actually checked on someone else's system.

Could some kind person please check their machine to see if this
is normal. Sorry to bother you all with this. Now I am the nuisance.

That could be because I have saved my preferences from previous

Hi Greg,

Could I just add to Eugene's suggestion please.
Make sure you:
1. Quit Mail first
2. Drag the com.apple.mail.plist from your /Users/yourusername/
Library/Preferences/ to your desktop

3. Set things in Mail the way you like, then quit Mail.

Does it properly save it this time? If so, your Mail prefs is
corrupted.
If not, you can drag the prefs file from the Desktop back to the
appropriate folder, replacing the new one that was created.

Hi Greg,

I'm not certain but I'm guessing the preference you will have to
delete is com.apple.mail.plist from your preference folder as the

redefining the column widths and it was the preference that
immediately updated itself when I closed the window)

My only concern would be that in deleting this preference you
would lose some of your valuable mail settings. I guess you should
back it up before deleting.

Re: Mail playing up

2009-09-15 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Bill and Ronni

Another thing that can happen to cause this is if you remove your
mail account and then re-install it with the same details, the
signature shows up but isn't attached correctly. It shows in your
mail signatures pane but not when you go to create an email.

This happened to me in Tiger 10.4.11 only this morning after a sync
with Mobile.Me from Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and a subsequent clean up.

I got it sorted out eventually, only to find out later that you had a
similar issue.

As usual, Ronni's sound advice will fix it.

Hello Bill,

Were your signatures ever working in Mail?

If I have understood your problem correctly, and they have never
worked in Mail, you have not set up the signatures correctly.

When you created the signatures, did you add them to your
particular accounts?

They won't show up in the pull down menus without that.
After you create a signature drag it to a particular account right
there in the signatures pane.
Then it should become available in the pull down menu for that
account.

1. First create a signature in Mail.
2. Then in Mail preferences Signatures go to All Signatures
section, your signature will be there.

3. Drag and drop it on every account you want to use it with.

You can also make a signature default so that you don't have to
use the pull down menu every time.

Let us know if you need further help with this problem.

Ronni

Re: Bluetooth mouse

2009-07-29 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Peter and WAMUGGERS

I love my Logitech LX7 5 button cordless mouse. It is designed for
both left handed and right handed people, which is very important at
our house.

The mouse scrolls left and right, up and down etc. I have the buttons
programmed for Expose and was very put out recently when I had to go
back to a 3 button model for a while as my LX7 was stolen.

The LX7 has be superseded and I was not as impressed with the
replacement, so I managed to buy two from an American ebay site.

Crispin Zinsmeister is the owner of Reforger.com and was very
friendly and helpful. They recycle new and rebuilt equipment and I
was able to buy them for AUD $86.00, delivered to Mosman Park, for
the two. ie $43.00 each. I am very happy with this.

Here is a link to the ebay site http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
ViewItemitem=370222444296ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123.

PS. I have taught myself to use the mouse with my left hand (I am
right handed) as my wife is a leftie (work of the devil). It took
about a week but I now prefer it, as I can mouse with the left and
type with the right. Sometimes when I use two computers at once, I
mouse with a one in each hand. This is very useful when performing
maintenance tasks. Anyone trying to learn to use the opposite hand
will be very frustrated at first but believe me, it's well worth the
effort.

Just be aware that your enthusiasm may be curbed if you ever
try to

copy very large amounts of data at once (such as cloning your hard
drive!). USB 2.0 tends to choke and slow to a crawl under such
conditions. This is why a drive with a Firewire port, while more
expensive, is a much better option. It is much better at
sustaining

a transfer rate.

I certainly agree with Peter, I personally would not purchase a USB
External Drive for backup purposes or transferring large Video
files.

Firewire is faster and more stable.

Which makes it even more annoying that Apple is now pushing you
more more

to USB:

- Want to plug a drive to an airport extreme for network access
- it has

to be USB.
- Macbooks no longer have firewire ports

	• Handles foreign currency well, and any cross-border aspects of
accounting.

• Basic payroll functionality.
	• If such a beast existed, something that accommodates commission
payments to 3rd partys, but we may need to buy or build separate
software for that.

• Solid support generally / ongoing RD.
	• Allows multi-user access - I don't think it necessarily needs
to be server based, so I guess just allowing access over internet
sharing would be good enough.

We have a MacBook pro with BigPond USB, ADSL Wireless modem.

A bit expensive but quite versatile.

See the WAMUG archives for details about setting up. Or contact me

Re: Next G and broadband

2007-06-01 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Darrel

We purchased a BigPond blue wireless broadband card (it's more like a
plug in dongle) from a Telstra agent a few weeks ago. We initially
had major problems and actually returned the unit (see below). But
after good advice from Daniel Kerr and others on WAMUG we were able
to get things working.

Telstra were very helpful but were having endless problems with Vista
and could not contribute much with Mac connection problems. I phoned
Maxon the manufacturers and was told that they could provide the
software but were not able to sell the units directly until their
agreement with Telstra runs out.

We ended up purchasing a second unit at a $50 discount from Australia
Post. ($249 not $299)

Our computers recognized the card immediately. The software on the
provided CD was of no use but you can download (BigPond Wireless
Broadband 2.5.3.dmg) on the Bigpond site www.bigpond.com/help/
downloads but definitely do not use (2.5.4) it is for something else
altogether.

With 2.5.3 you can see the card, register the account but not get
connected after you have registered. The software carries a warning
that it is beta only and may contain bugs. That is a gross
understatement. While talking to the BigPond tech, we were able to
report 3 major faults. However after registration, I then installed
the software from Maxon (MaxonHSDPA_v1.0b2.10.4.dmg) and the unit has
worked flawlessly since.

Speeds are fairly good if you have 3 or more bars of signal and you
need to choose a location with 4 bars of signal to get through the
registration process. I was also told that you can register on a PC
using Windows XP and then use the Maxon software on the Mac.

The whole thing was a bit of a nightmare but certainly worth the
effort in the end.

Feel free to contact me directly if you need any more help or some
sympathy.

Hi Greg

If you use the Maxon drivers for the NextG wireless card it works
fine. I

know, as one of my clients has one, and he's lent it to me when I was in
Sydney recently. I just download the Mac drivers from the Maxon website
http://www.maxon.com.au
When I was in Sydney , I plugged in the card, waited a minute or two
and it

made a connection (the green light flashes) and I'm on the internet. No
problem at all.
Although, it was set up when I had it.
We also borrow one from one of the Telstra reps to use for Internet
at the

WAMUG meetings at Curtin. Again, it just works.
I may be able to get you the rep's name or can help you a bit more
with this
if you like. I'd need to find out that info, but drop me an email if
you're
interested, otherwise others may also be able to provide it to you as
well.

But I know they definitely work.

Hope that helps.

We recently tried out a Bigpond Next G, wireless broadband USB mobile

the box didn't even show the USB mobile card as an option on it's

connection manager, from BigPond, we were able to go on line up until
we completed registration. After that we were unable to go on line to
anywhere other than the start of the BigPond registration page.

A Bigpond representative who was very helpful and knowledgeable about
Apple, spent an hour and a half on the phone with me to try to get it
going. We found and reported a few bugs in their beta software (which
they advertise will probably be the case). But in the end we
established that the Mac beta software would only let us go to the
Bigpond registration site and no further until the software is
developed further. This may take some time. So we sent the device
back for a credit. The devices have dropped in price by $50 in the
last few days, which may be telling us something.

For what it's worth, apparently Vista users have similar problems and
can only make the wireless broadband work after a 20 minute phone
call to BigPond. Thats why it takes so looong to get through to
BigPond tech help at the moment.

The MacBook pro has no built in modem so we are now in a situation

A common connector that can probably rigged for a test.

Output 19.0 volt 3.2A
It has a single plug (for the laptop end) that looks virtually the

Does anyone have one of these that they do not want any more ?

Small Business Accounts App

2005-10-31 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello WAMUGgers,

Can anyone please recommend a small business accounts application for
my mac?

Details are roughly as follows;

Running OS 10.4.2 on a G4 400 Yikes PCI graphics, 1 Gig RAM. 30 Gig
internal HD and 128 Gig firewire HD.

A small one person business with about 30 cash sales transactions per
month.
Similar number of purchases, mainly petty cash, but including some
accounts.

Registered for GST and have a turnover around $50,000 per annum.
Two bank accounts.

Currently using Kalamazoo one write system (a manual system like
dentists used to use). This has served me very well for 20 years.
The simplicity of the system is very attractive. But it is difficult
to correct mistaken entries.

No staff wages.
Sole trader status.
GST is the only complicating factor.

I have looked briefly at MYOB (seems too sophisticated), iBank (may
be the answer) and a couple of others.

Have asked accountants, but they are PC users.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation.

Hello Everyone

Another idea which might help.

Create a new netiquette page or modify an existing one. Publish it on
the list from time to time (say every 3 months).

Include concise explanations about using and joining the group.

Include messages about the benefits of membership, but keep it short.

Publish and sing the praises of outstanding contributions. ie;

The selfless dedication of some contributors when answering questions.
The generous, humanitarian aid from those working on the Bali Macs
Project.

Include useful links.

Newbies will be grateful and encouraged to participate in the

Experienced users can delete it after a quick perusal for new info.

I understand that some of this is covered elsewhere, but out of site is
out of mind.

Hi,

In early 2005, Murdoch Multimedia will be running a course which
involves 3rd yr Bachelor of Multimedia students having to work with
clients towards the development of multimedia content/products. This
might include website design and construction, interactive DVD / CDrom
authoring and educational product development. The production and
design comes at zero cost. I was hoping that a not for profit, social
service organisation or museum may benefit from this exercise.

So I am wondering if you could forward this onto any organisations,
or, could you let me know about any worthy organisations who would
benefit.

both became too small after a while and I got the disk full messages.
Now I use the internal 20G and that seems comfortable.

If the disk becomes overloaded and there is not enough extra room for
the memory management system, all sorts of horrible things happen. (See
archives or contact me for details if required).

Hello Everyone

Thank you for the warning.

Over the last 3 months I have had 3 dubious Ebay messages which look to
me like scams.

I have written back to them for confirmation (no reply) I am still
suspicious.

Hello Ebay

Thank you for your Email. I am totally mystified by this correspondence.

I have not done what you accuse me of, there must be some mistake.

Perhaps someone else has tried to use my name or something.

If the service is terminated, I will not renew it unless you contact
me. Security is very important to me too.

Re: Disk is full alert

2004-12-01 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello Paul

I had a similar problem about 2 months ago. My partner imported lots of
images into iPhoto and used up most of the spare HD space on my (then)
OS10.3.5 partition.

I had quite a few warnings even though I had about 1Gb of spare space
left on the partition and 1GB of RAM.

The long story should be on WAMUG archives as Keyboard Address Book
Help Please Help for Help (last message 5 October, 2004).

The root of all my problems was a shortage of disk space for use by the
memory manager (similar to virtual memory, pre OSX). Another poster had
trouble with 'help' and directed people to an article about the issue
(see archives).

If there is not enough RAM/ Virtual RAM, the computer goes into damage
control and cuts out the least important parts of its processing as
memory becomes scarce.

Address Book, Mail, iCal and Safari all had problems and preference
files became corrupted. The only remedy in the end was to create a much
larger partition and re-install OS 10.3. The problem with Address Book
and the Keyboard were completely resolved by this action.

By all means phone me if you need more information.

Re: Keyboard Address Book Help Please Help for Help

2004-10-05 Thread Greg Manzie
Thank you to all for the support and help. This posting is for those
who are interested in the solution to my previous problems.

To everyone else. Sorry for the long post.

I have had a lot of drama and great deal of hair pulling over the last
few weeks, but the problems turned out to be similar and operating
system related.

1. The Keyboard problem;

My first posting.
Good Morning

Can someone help me with this problem please.
Macintosh G4 400 MHz (PCI graphics), 1 Gig RAM, OS10.3.5,
10 Gig 20 Gig internal HD's,120 Gig external HD,
SCSI card, Netgear RP 614 Router,

When OS 10.3.4 first came out I dutifully updated. At about the same
time I purchased a cordless Logitech mouse.

About the same time I also started having intermittent problems with my
keyboard entries. It is a standard Apple keyboard, that came with the
G4.

The e, d, c and enter keys would hang and sometimes not work at all.
This happens in Finder, Mail, Safari and Appleworks (possibly others)
but not all of the time.

I waited until O S 10.3.5 came out, then undated again, but with no
change.

The problem occurs at some stage every day but not every time I use
those apps. (for instance it is not happening right now thank goodness.
It can be a real pain when your on line or trying to communicate with
the bank).

I do regular back ups and maintenance checks and have tried the
following at various times;

Reboot almost every day
Run Diskwarrior (every month)
Run Yasu (every week)
Repair permissions using disk utility (even though Yasu does that
anyway)

Re fitted the original Puk mouse
Changed the Logitech mouse batteries
Changed the keyboard settings

Sometimes if I disconnect and re connect the USB mouse port on the
keyboard the problem disappears for a while.
The only other USB devise is a Sarotech external HD connected to the
Tower USB port. (this is usually switched off).

The problem only occurs during a particular session. The next time I
use the app it may be normal. This happens even if I leave the app
running in the background.

If the problem was mechanical and related to the keyboard itself, the
pattern of intermittence would be different (I think). When the fault
occurs, it consistently occurs (if that makes sense).

I recently fitted some second hand, but genuine Apple RAM, but that was
working perfectly before the problem started.

Thank you for your attention

Greg Manzie

Selected answers;

I have a user here with a standard corded G4 keyboard - at some stage
around upgrading to 10.3 he lost the volume up / volume down and eject
buttons on the keypad. The fault is certainly not mechanical and posts
to other lists to date have been fruitless...

Cheers, Antony.

Thanks for providing such a complete description of your situation.
However, unless there is something special going on, the first thing
you should suspect is a hardware problem within the keyboard (which is
never going to be resolved by a software upgrade). Depending on the
model of keyboard, and its physical environment, you could suspect
either a mechanical issue or an electrical issue. Sometimes, built-up
grime is enough to jam the mechanical response of keys, and this can be
resolved easily. If it were a software problem, it would normally be
deliberately caused by special input methods (e.g. non-Roman writing
systems or 'accessibility' features), and would have a consistent
trigger pattern, and would not affect such a peculiar assortment of
keys.

If you are in a physically clean environment (e.g. you do not spill
drinks into your keyboard), it is probably a bit hard to explain why so
many keys have failed, but for all I know it might be a consequence of
the arrangement of electrical conductors in the keyboard. Things like
cracks in electrical conductors can cause intermittent problems that
resolve themselves if you physically handle the keyboard. It is also
possible that there's a permanent degradation of a discrete component
or integrated circuit (in the keyboard) that is causing these problems.

If you suspect a software problem, one approach might be to borrow a
second keyboard for a while. Whenever your current keyboard misbehaves,
try pressing the equivalent keys on the second keyboard. If the second
keyboard always works, then replace your current keyboard. You could
also simply try unplugging (and then replugging) your keyboard each time
this happens, to effect a power cycle. If the problem applies to both
keyboards, however...um...

from James.

Actually: note that 'e', 'd' and 'c' all form a column on the keyboard.
Generally, the natural arrangement of buttons in keyboards and keypads
is as a 'matrix'. While I don't know about Apple keyboards, a
traditional construction and operation of matrices is based around a
row/column design. Therefore, failures affecting a column or failures
affecting a row would be a veritable 'calling card' of hardware failure.

again from me;

Thank you

Address Book Help Please

2004-09-27 Thread Greg Manzie
Something in my Address Book is not as it should be. (See OS and
machine details below).

The application does not want to start up and hangs, then needs to be
forced to quit.

I have run Yasu, DiskWarrior and Disk Utilities (which I do regularly).
There were no problems, but it made no difference.

I have temporarily removed all of the various files and folders from
the user library and replaced them with back ups from a week or so ago,
but there is still little difference.

Strangely (at least at first) the Address book in Safari still
functions normally. Also when my partners login window is active, her
address book works normally. (almost identical lists)

By completely removing the Address book folder from the user library, I
can get the application to start. But it does not run well. If I then
revert to the database backup, it imports it, but hangs again.

Perhaps there is a strange .plist file somewhere that is corrupt.

I think it is time for me to stop guessing and ask someone with more
experience.

Thank you in anticipation.

Thank you James, for your excellent input.

I now remember that at one stage the space bar was affected which is

Safari problem after 10.3.4 upgrade

2004-06-08 Thread Greg Manzie

Hello everyone
Can you help me please?

Since updating the OS to 10.3.4 (including Safari and mail updates)
through Software update on my G4,
I cannot successfully download PDFs or other files through safari
download.

The internet and Mail work well, as does Software update and some other
on line updaters like
Speed Download 2 and Safari Enhancer. (I updated Security update this
morning)

I have run Yasu and DiskWarrior regularly and all is normal. I've
looked at Safari Help
without success. Also I've been right through Safari Preferences
several times.

I use Telstra BigPond ADSL and they say everything seems normal their
end.

Before I start meddling with things I don't properly understand, I
thought I should ask.

You may have installed the latest security patch, which means

Re: Safari problem after 10.3.4 upgrade

2004-06-08 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Shay

The OS 10 partition shows as 7.5 GB, 5.68 GB used, 1.82 GB available.
However you are right, the downloads folder was on a separate partition
which proved to be full.
Thats why the direct upgrades were working, as they go to the OS 10
partition.

I moved the downloads folder and now all is well.

Thank you very much for your time and trouble.

As someone else said, there are no silly questions, just a lot of
uninformed dingbats.

How much disk space is spare on that drive? It sounds like it might be

downloads fine for me.

Re: Opening dbx file

2004-04-30 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Faye

Sorry I was not able to help more.

I had a similar problem with an Atari database recently (dmf files).

I had to convert the files to a more generic type of spreadsheet file
(dif) in the Atari program, then transfer them to the Mac
where I could read them in a free download of Filemaker Pro 7 ( a
database).

I have checked into MacLink Plus Deluxe (very good program) and
FileMaker and they can deal with (dbf).

ABCdbx says it will convert to a .dbf but as you say it is PC only.

There must be a way.

Feel free to send more details of what you are trying to do, with what
and how often.

Hi everyone,

Thank you Garry, we down loaded photorescue immediately.

A friend of mine had this happen here in Perth just last week.

230 professional portraits loading and iPhoto crashed (possibly over
full HD or a dodgy memory card?).

Big panic. Urgent phone calls. Do we force quit or what?

We searched the HD with the finder and luckily they were there.

Whew! An anxious night while we checked and then the usual tut tut, you

But I'll bet it happens again, as everyone in the studio is usually in

Re: Big Pond Broadband

2004-02-06 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Everyone

I must admit (sheepishly) that I have Bigpond Broadband ADSL.

Yes, it is expensive, but I was able to cancel one of our office phone
lines by having it. As well, by having all plans, ie. mobile,
landline, long distance calls etc. with Telstra, I get 15% off all
bills. So pricing should be considered as a package.

As well as competitive prices on most things. If there is a better plan
for your business, they will ring you and give

you the cheaper price, even if your old plan has not expired.

No dial up cost, almost never a denial of service in 2 years,
Reasonable 24 x 7 help line (they are not all Mac
literate but they usually can find someone on duty who can answer my
dumb questions).

I have used a Macintosh PM 6200, 64 Meg RAM OS 8.6 with ADSL
(slow). But now use G4 400 MHz (PCI graphics), 128 Meg RAM,
OS10.3.2,

10 Gig 20 Gig internal HD's, SCSI card, Netgear RP 614 Router,
Alcatel Speed Touch ADSL Modem through built in Ethernet.

I don't have many issues with this service. It just works, which is
more than I can say for some things on my Macs.

Re: Strange iMac Problems

2004-01-31 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Anthony,

Don't you just hate computers sometimes.

You probably do not have a doorstop.

Try the following;

Temporarily disconnect all peripherals.

Restart with either the OS9, Disk Warrior, or OS 10 CD by holding down
the 'c' Key during re-start.
If you can re-install OS9 it will prove that your problem is with the
OS 10.2 software install.

Did you check for firmware updates before installing OS 10? Use another
computer to check with Apple if you can.
If a firmware update was needed but not done, someone with more
experience than I will need to help.

OS X works fine but machine hangs a few hours later. Restart it and it
does this :

Chimes, powers up (green power switch visible), sound of screen
energizing, HD spins up then about 5-6 seconds in (before anything
visible appears on screen) the machine partially powers down.

Thanks to the service manual I have checked the power supply flow -
the right voltages on the right pins (of the down converter board) are
present in the few seconds before it all seems to sag.

The machine doesn't actually go off, the power light remains on but
the power being supplied is less than the specification. Flaky PSU or
something else?

Have tried resetting PRAM, checking PRAM battery, reseating
components, resetting PMU.

Any ideas here or do I have a nice pretty door stop all of a sudden?

Cheers, Antony.

Re: Junk

2004-01-22 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Brett,

I am sure there is more than one way to skin a cat, but this is what I
do.

Running Mail 1.3.2 on OS 10.3.2 with the In mail box open, select
ViewCustomise Toolbar.

There are several tools that you can drag up to the tool bar that will
help.

The Junk tool sets up a Junk Box that can be trained to automatically
filter out known Junk as well as

all mail from sources not recorded in your Address Book etc.

There are many controllable options for this as you may already know.
For more details go to the Mail Help Menu.

Next, in the tool options there are Go Offline and Go Online tools.
They can allow you to sort Junk without

automatically opening it. Drag them into your Toolbar.

When your new mail is delivered, select Offline and sort anything to
Junk that is suspect. This teaches Junk what you think is

Spam.

Next (still Offline) open the Junk Mailbox and open anything you think
is OK and tell Junk that it is OK by clicking the Junk tool

again (which has now changed to a Not Junk Tool).

You can tell Junk when and how to delete the real Junk by opening
MailPreferencesJunk Mail. You can also open

MailboxErase Junk Mail and delete it manually.

This should help solve your problem.

However, I also use Little Snitch 1.1rc1 which tells you who wants to
phone home to mother. It won't let them until you
approve. It's interesting to see how often applications like Stuffit
check automatically
for upgrades etc. (fair enough but it's nice to Know). A Little Snitch
demo can be acquired at http://www.obdev.at.

Good Luck

Panther installation was - Word problems

2004-01-08 Thread Greg Manzie

Hi Rod and others

I upgraded a G4 400 PCI Graphics with 128 M RAM (soon to be much more),
from OS 10.2.8 to 10.3.1 and then 10.3.2, along with other apps like
AppleWorks 6.2.7.

I used Software Update with ADSL internet direct upgrades. I did this
over a few weeks and had almost no problems. Panther is by far the most
stable OS, I have ever used. The only issue of consequence was a
repetitive minor error when repairing permissions with Disk Utility.

Over the holiday break I decided to have a good clean up of the whole
system, re-format the two hard drives (1 x 10 Gig and 1 x 20 Gig),
clean install the OS (10.3.2 and 9.2.2).

After installing Panther on its own drive partition, for the first
time I had problems with the finder being a little erratic and
AppleWorks upgrade (6.2.7) not being able to find AppleWorks 6.2.0 even
when guided or freshly installed several times from the original CD.

There were some annoying issues with Mail, Safari and others but
nothing too bad. After some more cleaning up I decided to dump
Panther and re-install it again. I did everything the same way running
Disk Utility Repair Permissions, re-format and partition the hard
drive, check
result with Disk Warrior from CD, re-install OS 10.3 upgrade to 10.3.2
(this time from a downloaded package).

All problems have now been resolved including the original minor
permissions error. The machine has never been better.

The only thing I can think of, that may have caused these stupid little
problems, is the installation process itself making a small error, or
stupid little me

somehow.

It is a lot of work, but I strongly recommend a good clean install.

 Thanks :-)
 Meg

Hello Meg and Everyone,

I am new to all this and didn't think I could help anyone yet. But here
goes.

We reluctently retired our old much loved Atari Mega ST4 machine which is
still a very user friendly office workhorse.

To replace it and move into serious graphics, we need a state of the art G4
but can't yet afford one yet.

In order to learn the Mac system and come into the twentieth century if not
the twenty first, we purchaced 3 x 6200/6300 series machines with many
extras and upgraded them with help from long suffering Guru/friends.

We currently run each of them with 64MB Ram, OS 8.6, 1Gig Jaz Drives, plus;

1. PowerPC 603/75MHz, Fujitsu 6 GB inbuilt Hard drive with 6 partitions,
Telstra ADSL Broadband Internet. This is our communication machine (hoping
to keep all other machines isolated for security).

2. PowerPC 603e/120MHz, IC35LO2OAVERO7-O 20 GB inbuilt Hard drive with 6
partitions. This is our word processor and office data base.

Someone told us that we needed to partition the hard drive for the older Mac
to recognise it, but this is not the case with OS 8.6.

The machines are, as you would expect, very slow by today's standards. But
having them side by side means you can work on one while the other is
thinking. (not quite dual processing, but we can dream)

The Jaz drives and hard drives give no trouble whatsoever.

We did blow the fuse in one power supply but this was on the third machine
with factory fitted 500 MB internal drive. (probably an unrelated problem)

Greg Gregory at MacWare International in Lesmurdie WA (08) 9291 0600 and
Robert Zatta at Xpress PowerMac Solutions (07) 5593 1912 have both been very
helpful. If you would like further details you can contact us on (08) 9383

I read the WAMUG Emails every day and must say that I appreciate both the
questions and answers very much and learn heaps by doing so.
