[WAMUG} mac pro 5,1 single or dual - which is faster

2021-06-27 Thread gary dorn
Hi Wamug

I purchased non-working mid 2010 macpro 5,1 via facebook marketplace for its
GPU. Turns out this thing had single 3.46 GHz 6 core CPU, 3 x 16G = 48 GB
1333 MHz RAM, Radeon 5770 1GB GPU, 1TB WD black HDD, an Apple Raid card and a
working power supply but a corroded chip on the backboard, probably causing the
shutdown failure after 30 secs.

I then purchased a working late 2012 macpro 5,1 server with a dual 2.4 GHZ 6
core CPU, 8 x 2GB RAM. I understand that this dual CPU can be upgrade to 2 x
3.46Ghz 6 core CPU (Xeon 5690 chips) or similar - but im not ready to do that
yet.

So I coupled these together - so that the late 2012 server how has 48 GB RAM,
SSD with High Sierra Radeon, 5770 1 GB GPU.

According to architosh most 3D Design and drawing software is single core.

https://architosh.com/2021/04/apples-new-m1-imacs-are-they-fast-for-cad-3d-users/

my questions is , Am I better of using the single 3.46 Ghz CPU tray (W3690?)
 , or the 2 x 2.4 Ghz ( E5645?). CPU tray

any advice appreciated.

Further to that any one recommend where to get Intel 3.46 Ghz Chips (Xeon
X5690) or 3.33Ghz chips (Xeon X5680)

thanks

[WAMUG} macpro 3,1 El capitan - now glitchy

2021-05-17 Thread gary dorn
hello WAMUG

MacPro 3,1
El Capitan 10.11.6
32 GB ram
ATI Radeon 5770
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT
2 x 23" apple Displays
1x SDD 1TB WD blue Elcapitan,
1 SDD 256MB WD green Elcapitan (Western Digital)
1x HDD 1 TB WD Elcapitan ,
1x HDD 320MB (seagage) mavericks

This setup has been very stable now for the past 3 years. I usually leave the
thing on over night - after I put it to sleep

Problem

The other day when I woke it up, it immediately shutdown and went into
restart, which got as far as the about halfway , paused (30-60 sec) then
restarted - such that it started cycling a restart without ever completing the
start up process.

I tried resetting PRAM , option start , shift start, etc even safe start -
none made any perceptible difference

pulled the whole thing apart, and gave it all a good clean/vaccuum - lots of
dust on fans, , RAM boards, GPU’s

put all back in and restarted - noticed on this restart there was a funny
noise from graphic card area - only got half way in boot process.

so I turned off , removed Nvidia graphic card and started in safe mode ( with
only ATi connected) - alas booted fully up

did some tests in “TEST” account - seems okay restarted in normal mode - all
seems okay again.

turned off, reinstalled Nvidia Graphics card - - went back in cycling reboot
turned off, disconnected ATI card , left Nvidia car connected - went back to
recycling reboot.

Hmm Nvidia Graphics card might be failing.

so disconnected and removed the nvidia and have been using the one ATI radeon
graphics card only which is now powering the 1screen via Dvi - it seems
stable

I tried running both screens - , 1 x display port with Dvi adaptor and one via
direct Dvi connection,
but- the mouse (wireless mighty mouse) and wired mouse behaved very eratically
and slow. wheel scrolling is haphazard if I try anything fast - If I move
slowly response is immediated - if I move fast - responce is laggy. I’m
wondering if the ATI card cant actually run 2 screens

Questions

1. is there anyway of testing if a graphics card is failing ?

2. is the slow mouse response due to graphics card running 2 screens

3. where can I get a second graphics card for MacPro 3,1 El Capitan .

4. As my screens are Dvi am I better connecting by DVi or via display port
with display port adaptor

Any advice much appreciated

Re: backup iPhone 7

2018-07-15 Thread gary dorn
good idea - problem we have is that the macbook currently runs off an external
SSD drive , connected by one the 2 USB ports. I ned to get my 4 USB Port thing
connected tot the macbook to connect all these things together - didn’t have
time yesterday.

I remembered that I had some iPhone software called imazing https://imazing.com
so connected both external backup drive and iPhone 7 to the macpro USB
ports, then used iAmazing 2 ( which we have a license for) to backup iphone
to the external hard drive.

will do for now.

thanks for the suggestion about moving the photos database to a different
drive - I recently did this on my macpro when I upgraded to El Capitan - i.e.
el capitan on SSD boot drive, data on a separate hardisk.

my wife iPhone has issues with it, therefore before taking too the apple shop

she currently has it backup to iCloud, however we would also like to get our
own backup onto a backup disk.

the back up is approx 40 gb

the macbook she uses has only 22 gb free ( 250 gb SSD)

can I backup on different computer ( macpro with 250 GB SSD - 170 GB free)
and transfer that to the backup disk for safe keeping.?

can iTunes backups be assigned directly to a backup disk?

any thought welcomed.

ps can iCloud backup be completely assured of its security/reliability ?

Hi Peter
A tough one these days

We use
"regardless",
"nevertheless"
and
"you've already said that"

As our default app.

Probably not very helpful to what your asking - but very effective non the less
when used often and consistently as a response to children's arguing or oral
provocations.

1 . a ram Board or chips are causing white blinking light on startup - how do
I get them tested?
Currently have only one ram board installed with 2x 512mb, 2 x 2gb chips
installed.

2. I've reinstalled lion to 10.7.5
Now Safari on my main user account won't open.

3. When screen saver is activated - the system states to restart

4 . One of my iCloud email accounts gd...@me.com won't connect.

Are these issues solvable?

Re: Macpro lion freeze - no restart

2018-03-21 Thread gary dorn
An update

I read something about dust affecting electronics particularly ram chips, so I
pulled the graphics cards and ram cards and gave all a good vacuum and wipe

I also read that there are 2 buttons on a logic board - a reset and a diagnosis
button
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/buttons-on-mac-pros-logic-board.924495/

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/363232/Mac+Pro+not+powering+on
Pressed reset button and then put graphic cards and 1 ram riser card back plus
put hd 's in different trays.

Rebooted into Mac OS 10.5 on hd2.
Plugged in my lion installer USB stick and started process of reinstalling on
hd 1

Took like 90 mins and it rebooted into lion on hd1 - yippee

Now I'm downloaded 10.7.5 combo client update( 1.9 GB)

Hopefully all will be okay !

Macpro lion freeze - no restart

2018-03-21 Thread gary dorn
Howdy
Yesterday my macpro 1,1 os 10.7 had a freeze - the 2nd screen got thin red
lines running across it in both directions - diagonally I think
Upon force restart I got blinking white start button- hmm I understand that's a
ram error

Sorted out blinking white light by removing ram chips and then progressively
reinstalling in pairs -

Upon restart boots to grey screen

Can reboot into 500 GB 2 nd hardisk ( os 10.5.8)

Other combinations-
Safe mode- shift key ( gets to about 25% left overnight
Recovery - r key
D key
Option shift P R keys

All Get grey screen freeze

Can boot into system select - option key
Shows hd 1 - 1 tb OS 10.7
Hd2 - 230gb is 10.5.8
HD recovery
Backup efi ( time machine disk ?)
Lion efi ( when USB Instsller stick plugged in)

Except for hd2 all seem to get stuck in a loop of grey screen

I removed hd1 and plugged it into MacBook and did hardisk check via disk
utility - says all is okay (65 GB free)

Does this likely mean the OS lion is corrupted and needs reinstalling
Can I reinstall lion via the MacBook ( I have new tech USB drive adaptor set).?

Also I gather I need another hardisk - can I use a WD drive from an external
hardisk, or do I need to buy an internal sata drive? Or an ssd!

Appreciate any advice.

Specs are
2006 macpro 1,1
Hd1 935 gb Mac is lion 65gb free
Hd2 Mac OS leopard 232 gb 18gb free
Ram - 2x 512, 2x 2, 2x 4=13 gb
ATI Radeon hd5770 slot 1
Nvidia gforce 7300gt slot 4
2x 23" Apple cinema displays

" connection to server was reset." or "connection to www… was interrupted
while the page was loading “ whenever a web page via Safari or Firefox is
attempted to open.
email seems to be okay

the other accounts function okay.

iMac late 2009
mac os 10.11.6
connected to apple airport basestation by ethernet
iMac wifi is off

any idea on what we need to do.

If has happened before a few months ago - I think we deleted the cache and
worked okay afterward.

thanks for any advice

Fwd: Contacts after upgrade to elcapitan

2016-06-13 Thread gary dorn
I've just noted there is a log file - which says "

2016-04-04 preparing merger with 508 users, 48 groups
Download from https://(name)@p46-contacts.icloud.com/(a long
number)/carddavehome/card/
Summary ( says local people 508 , local group 48 etc..,
UPLOAD to
https://(name)@p46-contacts.icloud.com/(a long number)/carddavehome/card/
MIGRATION COMPLETED"

So I opened up iCloud via browser and their in contacts is 1018 contacts
consisting of 8 copies of each contact!

Hmm

So I went contacts>accounts>which opened up iCloud settings , ticked contacts-
synced to contacts app.

Oh well - problem resolved!

There was no backup nor syncing to iCloud before hand.

How do we restore contacts / address book data.

I've found

But don't know how to get elcapitan contacts to read the old data

Can anyone please recommend a procedure

Hi tony
Agreed Netflix has mostly no new movies - latest release dates maybe 2014.

Regardless to that I recommend watching the "IP Man " trilogy

The Shaolin movies can be pretty funny!

iMac & mavericks: start up disk problems

2015-12-06 Thread gary dorn
Howdy ,
iMac 10,2 late 2009
2 TB (600 mb free)
8mb ram
Mac OS mavericks since September ( updated from snow leopard , which ran
really well for 3 years)

since Yesterday morning we've had startup problems
At first startup , was able to login, but then spiral of death wouldn't,t
cease, so forced shutdown ( was in a rush)
Upon restart starts into HD recovery only

I've tried different start up options, i.e. Single user, Pram, select start up
disk, to no obvious effect
I'm currently in HD recovery, disk utility
In Disk utility says , verifying "disk0s2" says disk needs repair

After some 60 mins disk utility says as a dialogue box.
"Stopped repairing disk0s2 - can't repair disk - backup, reformat disk and
restore your backed up files."
Behind that shows details of disk repair
Repairing file system
Invalid content in journal
Checking journal HFS Plus volume
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume could not be verified completely
Invalid content in journal
File system check exit code is 8.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: disk utility can't repair this disk e disk, restore your backed
up files.

Ahhh
We have a time machine backup
We don't have a Mavericks usb installer ( was installed via a Mavericks
installer copy put on hardisk)
I have a lion usb installer

Thanks for the advice,
Come to think of It, I went to 'kids and Internet lecture' at mount lawley
senior high school a couple of weeks ago, whereby it was recommended to
activate restrictions and turn off download apps- which I think I did.
My big mistake is that I don't Remember the ( restrictions) passcode!

I did a verification of Disk and permissions

Software was pretty much up to date
I installed off a purchased USB 10.7

During that install , screen went grey for ages on restart, - sounded like it
was searching for cd/DVD
Did restart - started okay
Did software update - included 10.7.5 update, a security update, iTunes and
smothering else - totally 5 GB!

Once restarted after update
iCloud login came up - entered info- said not available at this time try
later
Oh well

Went to mail - via dock!
Mail slow to open or do anything

Hence my original email

Subsequently ran disk permission x1

I thin spot light has finished its thing

Now open mail via application menu

MailWindowactivity
Indicates 8 rows ( 2 per account)
Ie fetching new mail. - connecting to server (null). - no progress
Synchronizing with server - traversing mailbox hierarchy - no progress

Connection doctors says

Trying to connect to SMTP account failed. Verify use some and password r
correct ( x 4 accounts)

Mail preferences opens but seems to not respond.

After Lion has completed installing and reboots:

Immediately after installing Lion (and rebooting), your system is likely to
run slowly as the mds and mdworker processes thrash around getting themselves
 reorganised.
Both of these processes are related to Spotlight.

Lion makes a good number of changes to the way the Spotlight search works.
These changes require a reindexing of your hard drive’s contents .

 1. Spotlight starts this reindexing immediately after Lion boots up for the
first time, and it causes systems (even relatively new ones) to run slow
 until it’s done.
Give Spotlight a few hours after install is complete to work everything out,
and you’ll have a much better first impression.

 2. Run Software update and download install all updates before you open any
 applications

 3. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility

 4. Open Mail Application (from Applications, not the Dock):
Note: that if you upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard, or if you have got a
fresh installation of Lion and you import data from an older version of Mail,
the first time you launch the new version, you will be prompted to update
 your existing email data.

This is because Lion’s version of Mail uses a different format for its
message database than older versions—you’ll have to allow the upgrade to
occur before you can use Mail.

 5. Open iPhoto (from Applications, not the Dock) and let it upgrade your
 iPhoto Library

 6. Open iTunes (from Applications, not the Dock) and let it upgrade your
 iTunes Library

 7. Repair Permissions

 8. Restart your Mac

Re: time machine -disk repair failed

Hi
repairing disk keeps coming up with
Error: Could not unmount disk

I did a web search about this error message, and it was suggested
that I eject the disk from Finder

http://hintsforums.macworld.com/archive/index.php/t-91030.html

which I did then
started repair

got this message
Verify and Repair volume disk1s3
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your
files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up
files.

got same message 4 x times
Hard disk name has change to disk1s3 ( I had named it TM 465)

given that this disk has only been used for Time Machine - what could
be causing a corruption?

Have I stuffed it up?

thanks

Hi Gary,

If you get the following error message: ERROR: Could not unmount disk.
Close all applications except Disk Utility, switch Time Machine off,
and try again.

Don't click Verify, just run Repair and hope Dick Utility can repair
the Time Machine partition.
Run DU Reapair until you don't receive any errors, it might have to
run it a few times.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: time machine - failed

If the drives not showing in Finder, I'd try shutting the computer
down and checking the drives connections. Could have a bit of dust
between connectors and making it show/not show.

Pull it out, check and reseat it. Then power up again and see how it goes.

Hi
as Suggested by Daniel
I removed drive, then reset it.

eventually showed up in Finder,
List of folders and files showed dated from March 2012 to Feb 2nd 2012

As suggested by Rhonda
I turned Time Machine off
then ran Disk utility,
Verifying volume tm 465
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Invalid node structure
The volume tm 465 was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.

so I ran repair - comes up with
Verify and Repair volume tm 465
Error: Could not unmount disk

what does that mean?

Kind regards
Daniel

Nothing should change from the way it was working when the Macbook

so does this mean, that if we decided to revert to SL on the

Not that we are likely to downgrade ( my wife though dislkes Lions

sketchup model via collada into preview

2012-02-08 Thread gary dorn
howdy folks

ibooks author supposedly imports the collada format 3D models for
viewing in the final book

SketchUp PRO - a 3D modelling software, can export to the collada format .

(The free version can as well with a bit of manipulation of the file
name - see http://collada.org/mediawiki/index.php/SketchUp )

Whilst playing around with exporting to Collada, I have discovered
that Preview opens a dae file and allows manipulation of the eventual
model.

A sort of preview of the 3D file - I'm not sure if Acrobat can do that!

Re: web runs slowly

2011-11-29 Thread gary dorn
Rhonda and James
thanks for your suggestions,

its the iMac which has the slow web connection - only on her account

On other accounts on the iMac,( mine, 3x kids and test account, all
run okay), its just the wifes which is really slow - usually safari
and sometimes Firefox.

The macbook runs fine

Is it worthwhile deleting the Safari and Firefox cache first? and
seeing if that makes a difference.

TA

Hi Gary,

You mention your wife is using the iMac constantly for her ENJO
business, then you mention she is using your MacBook?
Which one is having the problem with Safari running slow?

AS James has suggested update to OS X 10.6.8, but download and
install the Combo Update!
Download the OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

1. Repair Permissions first before installing the Combo
2. Install the Combo OS X 10.6.8
3. Repair Permissions again.
4. Restart your computer

Repairing permissions IS extremely important for Apple software
updates, especially for OS X updates.
It is not important for third party software although, it does keep
Finder in the loop of what is going on.

  I did  a permissions check and it came up with  errors in;
  Java/JavaVirtiualMachines

which have remained errors despite a number of repairs

What exactly is the full error?

If its something like this:
System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Classes/dt.jar,
should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
Note where it displays the privileges that the lead character is an l.
The leading l (ell) is not a permission anyway; it is the file
type identifier that tells the OS the file is a symbolic link.

If this is the case, the answer to your query is:
Because there are no permissions errors. The message is information
stating that the displayed item is not actually a file it is a link
or alias to a file. The Java items turn out to be symlinks.

In the past, this sort of thing has happened with SUID and ACL.

As long as you receive 'Permissions repair complete' you are OK.

If Safari is still running slow after installing the Combo Update
and Restarting repairing permissions.
Delete Safari's Cache database file.
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.safari/. Delete the Cache.db file. (the
~ tilde means your Home Library)

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: iCal entries keep disappearing

2011-11-28 Thread gary dorn
I'm about to ring iCal's neck.

I'm running iCal 5.0.1 on a MacBok Pro running 10.7.2, syncing via
MobileMe with an iMac and iPhone. Entries entered in iCal, either on
MacBook Pro or iMac, sometimes stay, sometimes disappear. Doesn't
seem to be any pattern. Then sometimes they disappear then come back.

Should I be moving to iCloud? What are the cons? I haven't bothered
because I have an iPhone 3G which apparently isn't iCloud
compatible, so I don't want to move to iCloud only to find my iPhone
no longer syncs with iCal.

Any tips to solve this painful missing iCal entry phenomenon?

Like you I had a 3 whole weeks disappear for some unknown reason.

Apple managed to recover the lost information and sent me my iCal
file , recovered from their backup servers I guess.

as for my iphone 3G - yep crawls too-

I noticed they had quite a few hardback copies at Boffins when we
went there on Saturday
I read a little bit of it - the Toy Story story is quite interesting.

2011-10-27 Thread gary dorn
Problem is from a mixed platform office. PDF's printed to this
printer from the PC print at the correct size and the colours are
reasonably close to the PDF. Same file printed from the Mac are
always at 99% size and the colours always acquire a green tinge
(result is the same from both Acrobat Reader and Preview). OS is up
to date.

Does anybody knows how to fix either of these problems? Thanks in advance.

Hi ya Mike

I run a HP Design Jet 750c via Leapard 10.6.6

I have the it connected via a keyspan parallell to USB cable

I use HP 750C driver, which I think I downloaded from HP?

printing size

yes seems to say 96 or what ever %

In the print dialogue box, go to printer features
change shrink page to CROP ( preserves dimensions)

maybe play around with color model

when all okay ( if it is) save as a Preset

The other thing is to check the sheet size dimensions

hope this helps

mail clipping email

2011-10-13 Thread gary dorn
howdy all

lately and ( possibly previously) if I attached a pdf to an email -
which I do regularly either as signed document, interesting paper or
a drawing, if the pdf is inserted in the heart of the email, the
remaining text gets clipped when the recipient goes to view it.

If the pdf is attached at the end of the email, seems to be okay ( I think?)

Is this a feature, a setting or something else

For instance , I sent an email to shire of Bridgetown on Monday, with
a letter and 5 reference documents ( 998k all up- on straw bale
building) all received okay

I sent out 5 emails today with 1 pdf (52k) with a web link to a
downloadable 11 MB drawing file, and only 4 lines were received.

weird.

any advice appreciated

Re: AutoCad for Mac

2011-10-13 Thread gary dorn
I have an upcoming project at home involving enclosing one side of
our carport, and I would like to use software to produce working
drawings rather than pencil, ruler and paper.
Google's Sketch Up seems to be hard to use (or maybe it's me) and I
would like to know what AutoCad-like software is available.
Shareware or free would be a bonus!

Peter
If you want to get 2D drawings, then I suppose a 2D app is what you are after
Dassault have produced a free 2d package called Draft sight

http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/overview/

SketchUp has been mentioned , and it is free, and like you, I still
cant quite get me head around it, but unless you get Layout, you
can't get any flat 2D drawings out of it

I found the 3D basecamp presentations really helpful to understand sketchup.

Domus.cad is a simple to used software, model in 3D and create
drawings - its what I used first when I went 3D.
They offer a free limited time, fully functional
http://www.interstudio.net/DomusCadE.html

I now use BoA - a sophisticated 3D design and drawings software

Re: mail clipping email

2011-10-13 Thread gary dorn
Hi Gary,

With attachments it is always best practice to:

1.Always include file extensions (.doc, .pdf etc)

2.Always use 'Windows-friendly' format (which omits resource forks,
if they exist) usually makes them friendlier for Macs too.
To tell Mail to use Windows-friendly encoding for all new messages,
choose Edit Attachments Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments
(the default setting).

3. Always use the 'Attach' button and set Apple Mail to place
attachments at the bottom of the message
For all messages, with no message window open: Choose Edit
Attachments Always Insert Attachments at End of Message.

Use Rich Text for Graphics.

OkiDoki Master.

I understand.
thanks

brother A3 printer/scanner

2011-04-19 Thread gary dorn

howdy all

I've been checking out the brother A3 printer/scanners. They come in
couple of configurations.

A recent brochure from Harris Technology has the MFC 6490 A3 colour
wireless MFP for $248.

A fairly good price.

I am particularly interested in the A3 scanner part

We have a brother 130c, which is okay but often it doesn't connect
properly to either G4 ( 10.4.8), or iMac (10.6.6), it that even
though the USB cable is plugged in all the time, its doesn't show up
in either Image Capture or print dialogue boxes.

So my questions is

is the 6490 A3 mac drivers okay , and would they be better than the 130c

and does any one else have/use one- what do you think ?

thanks

Hi Gary,

Just adding to my first reply and Daniel's reply. From what you
mentioned below, I would suggest it is important that you replace
this hard drive for a much larger drive, ASAP. You are already
risking corruption of files.

In one of my posts to another WAMUG member some time ago that had a
hard drive with not enough free space and was experiencing Finder
Corruption because of this.

A hard drive that fills up and turns flaky is nearly impossible to
get back to normal without Erasing reformatting.
If you run Photoshop it is best to have 100GB of free space. If all
you were doing is Microsoft Word and email, I would keep a minimum
of 50 GB free unused space available, this allows the operating
system vital unused space to write its swap files, virtual memory
scratch disk.

The operating system also needs to use the hard drive for temporary
storage as you work.
It creates what's known as virtual memory on your hard drive,
accessing it constantly.

Full hard drives also tend to fragment system and data files and
greatly slow disk access down, too.

Left unchecked, the problem will likely spread and corrupt the
entire install until the hard drive literally won't mount or the
computer won't boot or run without constant crashing.

Cheers,
Ronni

Drive pricing is pretty good at the moment for MacPro's and
considering they can take 4 hard drives in total, well worth it!
You can get some 1TB or 2TB drives for not a lot. They even have a
3TB drive now, but it's still fairly pricing.

It's just the cloning part that can be fun.

 Hi Gary,

Yes, for sure. A hard Drive running with only 17GB Free space, is
lucky to be running at all.

If your drive is too full, performance is affected dramatically.
You need to keep at least 15%-20% of your total hard drive space

Re: a scanning issue

2011-01-20 Thread gary dorn

My current project is to convert a selection of photos taken on film
back in 1989 and produce a DVD/slideshow of this holiday for viewing
on a TV set

So far I have scanned the old photos in sets of 3 and have created
41 sets of these shots as separate jpg files

I have given each of the groups of 3 a name to identify the locality
in which the photos were taken and dropped them all into I Photo

So far this has given me 41 slides to the slide show but I have lost
the titles allocated to each group

Can someone point me in the right direction to achieve my objective?

sounds to me that may want to use the Events capability as a way of
organising your selection

1. IMPORTING
When we import pictures into iPhoto off our camera, the thumbnail
view of the photos on the SD card show up.
I select which photos I want to import and at the bottom of the
window, in the event name, I type what ever I choose,

I also select - hide photo already imported

click import selected.

I then go the event just imported
select the photos and then make a new library album, or add them to
an existing album.

NOTE prior to creating a album, you can a Folder and a series of
Albums in them. For instance we have a folder called HOLIDAYs in the
side bar, and have a series of albums in them, such as Albany 2010,
cervantees 2011, Boyagin rock 2009 , etc

another way if importing from a hard disk
iPhoto fileimport select imagesimport
a new untitled event is created rename event

again select the photos in the event and create a new album.

2. IF ALREADY IMPORTED

if the photos are already imported, whcih seems to be what you saying.
select the photos, go EventsAdd flagged photos to new Eventrename event

or select photos fofileNew Album from selectionname album

as already mentioned you can create a folder say HOLIDAY 1989, then
add separate albums ( 41 of them) to this folder - the number is no
big deal , I have 61 Albums in my PROJECTS folder.

I use iphoto 09 version 8.1.2

I've looked at the videos on Iphoto 11, very impressive capabilities

Hope this helps

I also have a collection of old transparencies taken back in the
1960/70s and am looking to achieve the same aim after I have scanned
a selection of them. I have the scanner

I have I Photo 11 Version 9.1.1 and I Movie 11 Version 9.0.1 installed.

PREVIEW - add pages to a PDF

2010-08-04 Thread gary dorn

howdy
my wife received via email a 2 separate of pages of a manual ( scans).

we moved these into a single PDF of 2 pages - easy enough to do
(Mac OS 10.6.2)

BUT

if we go to reopen this created PDF at a later date, it only has a
single page in the side bar, there is nothing else in it.

We tried exporting and printtoPDF, but alas make no difference.

Are we doing something wrong?

we resolved the situation by adding the pages to a blank PAGES file
and then printing to PDF.

seems strange to me
thanks

Re: PREVIEW - add pages to a PDF

2010-08-04 Thread gary dorn

Neil
good explanation
A.. is what we did,
I'll have a go at B..

thanks - very helpful

Hi Gary,

The thing about Preview in Snow Leopard is that it works a little
differently to previous versions.

The thing to remember is that you can now have several documents open in the
same window - you can see this when opening pdfs:

Double-click a number of pdfs individually and they will each open up in
their own window BUT select a number of pdfs and then go File/Open (or
command-O) and they will all open in one Window.

The title-bar of the window also reflect what's going on:

- A single pdf window will have something like:
blurb.pdf (page 2 of 5)

- A multiple pdf window will have something like:
blurb-pdf (page 2 of 5) (3 documents, 15 total pages)

With the new system (assuming you have the sidebar view set to Thumbnails)
each document appears separately in the sidebar and can individually be
expanded to show all the pages of the document as thumbnails or collapsed to
show just one thumbnail for that document.

With the new system dragging pages to the sidebar also works differently:

A.. If you just drag a page from the sidebar of one window to the sidebar of
another window, it will be added as a separate document - I suspect that
this is what you did - whilst you can move from page to page in the one
window, both documents remain separate and if you save you are just saving
whichever document is selected (not all the pages of both documents in the
sidebar).

B... If you actually want to add the page INTO another pdf you have
to drag the

page ONTO the actual sidbar icon/thumbnail of the document you want to
insert into - you should then see (in the window title-bar) the page count
of the document increase (rather than the document count) and if you now
save that document it will include the added page.

At first, it's quite confusing (and not particularly well documented) -
especially when you are used to the old way - until you realise what is
happening. However, once you get used to it, it works very well.

I hope my explanation makes sense - play with a few pdfs to see how it all
works.

Cheers

Re: OT Going Solar Power. - longish reply

2010-08-03 Thread gary dorn

We are building new house and will hopefully be having Solar power
and water. Any advice would be gratefully received, OT of course :-)

Mac and WAMUG

If I may, I make a longish reply covering a number of aspects.

1. Power system
You are not saying whether you are Stand alone, Grid switched, Grid
connected or Hybrid. Each has its merits and advantages and costs.
You may want to look at unisuns web site for a description and also
stand alone system costs.

http://www.unisun.com.au/

To keep the system to a reasonable size or have a reasonable payback
period, its generally advisable to reduce energy consumption,
particularly look at the items that require either high energy
loading or are on constantly

such as:
lighting - use low level general light and make up difference with
task lighting - stay away from halogens and use PL tube compact
fluros or now LEDs

heating - use the sun or wood, or gas as much as possible ( see below)
cooling - use the breeze as much as possible, then electric pedestal fans
cooking -generally use gas , however it seems that most ovens are now
going electric, induction are super fast although draw 36 amps I
think?

washing -
pumping - see below in water section

2. House Design
In your house design generally you want to have good orientation so
that you get the sun when you want and have shade when you don't. I
find long thin wings can achieve this the best.

Next is to fully insulate your building. The building code currently
requires R1.5 for walls and R3.5 for roofs - I recommend that you try
and achieve a higher rating than that, atleast R4.0 for roofs and R3
for walls, the difference in cost is not that much for a superior
envelope.

Then you ought to locate your thermal mass in the right place.

3. Heating
Radiant heat is the best and most comfortable sort of heat - the SUN
provides massive amounts of it.- So use the SUN as much as possible
to heat.

This can be done by:
judicision use of glass and mass floor ( for heat absorption)
hydronic floor heating ( hot water tubes in floor)

If you can't do that then you have to move to burning carbon via; a
gas fired heat box, an electric reverse cycle aircon, a wood fired
heat box, a gas fired heater, an electric panel (convection) heater
or a Finnish mass stove

In my designs we do
Judicious use of glass
hydronic floor heating - see Enviroplumb
http://www.enviroplumb.com.au/index.php

Finish mass stove or masonry oven
wood gas fired heat box, typically large enough for wet back and
cooking ( ala Metters stove sort of thing)

Interestingly women generally require a higher ambient heating
temperature than men -

probably because a 65 kg women makes 90watts, a 85 kg man 130 watts!

4 Hot water
Solar is the first preference, - the Apricus evacuated tube system
seems to be the most effective.
Enviroplumb has tanks where by the heated water can be used for
showers, kitchen etcs and also hydronic floor heating. On one of my
projects the heat exchanger is 1000 ltrs
see rotex
http://rotex-solar-hot-water-hydronic-heating.com.au/html/domestic/10/solar-hot-water-heating-hydronic-residential

if the Apricus system doesn't suit (cost more) then the Solar kleen
system is the next choice

http://www.sola-kleen.com.au

5. Cooling
Most people are aware the natural ventilation, particularly along the
coast is the most effective and cheapest way of cooling an interior,
yet we seeing a rapid increase in the installation of refrigerated
air con systems. These operate a some 2400w , so they chew up the
power consumption and virtually make a mockery of PV power system .
A few years ago we looked in the viability of making an aircon
system powered by a stand along PV system. The system looked like
costing $30,000 !

At a recent sustainability forum for mechanical systems I went too,
the presenter suggested that overhead (high) windows is the
preferred method of inducing cross ventilation in buildings without
the blowing around papers effect.

I essentially call this clerestorey windows.

6.Drinking water
With the move to incorporating rainwater tanks, initially for gardens
but eventually it might be needed for personal consumption, comes the
need for greater filtering.

We prefer Reverse Osmosis (RO) our supplier does whole house filtering
see http://www.purewatersystems.com.au/
we go with Grundfos pumps, for their low energy consumption, and
decent size reservoir, so that the pump is only on occasionally to
refill the reservoir.

http://www.grundfos.com.au/

Hope this helps

Hi Gary,

Those symbols are Bangs.
snip

3. Verify your SSL setting: Another problem that can cause a bang is
an incorrect SSL setting-some POP and IMAP servers

support SSL, some don't.

To check yours, go to Mail's Accounts preference pane, select your
account, and click the Advanced button.
Toggle the state of the Use SSL checkbox, close the Preferences
window (saving changes when prompted), and try to connect again.

I unticked the SSL, and it seemed to set a new number, anyway the
bang symbols are gone. Is it better to have SSL ticked or unticked.
This bangs has only happened in the last 2 days, and I have been
using Mail for over a year now.

hmm I got a message from my ISP yesterday that the authentication
server was overloaded after the dropout of a large number of

how come I have all these duplicates?

Hi Gary,

Looks like you have synced contacts from both your computer and
MobileMe, causing the duplication.

Check if you have duplicate Calendars on your iPhone as well.
Also check there are no duplicates on your Mac or on MobileMe.

This occurs if you sync Contacts/Calendar with your Mac Address
Book/ iCal AND MobileMe, with both having the same listings.
If you open Calendar and touch the left arrow to show Calendars
you'll find 2 copies, merged in All?

If you are syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with
your MobileMe account on your iPhone, and have also selected to sync
contacts and calendar events direct with the Address Book and iCal
on your Mac via the iTunes sync process, which is selected under the
Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences?

If so, this will duplicate your contacts and calendar events and is
not required when syncing contacts and calendar events over the air
with your MobileMe account on your iPhone.

To get rid of the duplicates on your iPhone:

1. On your iPhone - Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Accounts MobileMe Contacts Off
You'll get a warning: There are existing Contacts synced with your
Mac. Would you like to merge them with your MobileMe account?
Choose Do not Merge. You then are asked what to do with the
existing contacts on your phone - select Delete.

did that

2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and go to the info tab of your
device page and disable sync contacts.

Then disconnect your iPhone.

hmm tab was not ticked ( I probably unticked it back in November)

3. On your iPhone - Settings Mail, Contacts,Calendars
Accounts MobileMe Contacts ON.

It will take a few minutes to re-sync the contacts without duplicates.

nope, no contacts showing

If you also have duplicates in Calendar, go though the same process
... (Calendar instead of Contacts )

You might find you need to restart your iPhone for everything to appear again.

also since doing this mobile me Syncing on my Mac pro wants to ;
delete 636 calender events, modify 37 and add 28 - and keeps asking
me every 5 mins to delete them! - no way Jack, I cancel each time

what could have I done wrong.

Qpix FS-170 film and slide scanners I went back to OfficeWorks
Freo this morning and discovered they gone on sale at $129. I

slide copier. Maybe less than half a second to scan a colour
slide.
There's a strong slide holder which comes with the scanner. It
can be lined up easily on the colour preview screen. There is
also a holder for 35mm negatives. The images are stored on a
user-supplied SD card. I simply borrowed a card from my
camera. Later I uploaded the scanned images via the camera to
iPhoto. The test images so far are excellent. The scanner can
run on four user-supplied AAA batteries which they reckon
provide about 90 minutes use. Alternatively they supply a USB
cable which can draw power from a computer or the AC power
supply, which is also provided. There is also a special
brush/wiper for cleaning the optics inside the device.

The scanner is one of the niftiest gadgets I've seen for a
long time. A sophisticated, precision bit of stand-alone gear.
I suggest if anyone has slides to copy then this is going to be
the ant's pants. At least I think so. At $129 I think they'll
go out the door pretty quickly once the word gets around. Be
warned, the instruction book takes a little study to figure all
the options out. I'm still working on it.

Re: sync iphone - contacts

Ronni,
thanks for your detailed reply.

I think I have synced both ways ie with iPhone plugged into Macpro
then synced via itunes,

and

synced via Mobileme.

as this seems to have caused duplicates, my preference is to sync via
mobile me only.

In system preferences, I have mobileMe set to sync automatically
(Calenders and Contacts).

as per you note below, you note how delete contact off my iPhone, I
think I'll check that I have them on my Macpro first , then once
assured I have them, I do as you suggest.

thanks

updated , but the other duplicate name wasn't?

In my main address book on my mac pro, there is only one. oh, hang
on this also syncs with my macbook. hmmm can these three all be
synced into one set of contacts?

If there are NO duplicates on your Mac MobileMe, and if I have
understood that you are syncing contacts and calendar events over
the air with your MobileMe account on your iPhone, and have also
selected to sync contacts and calendar events direct with the
Address Book and iCal on your Mac via the iTunes sync process.

2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and go to the info tab of your
device page and disable sync contacts.

Then disconnect your iPhone.

3. On your iPhone - Settings Mail, Contacts,Calendars
Accounts MobileMe Contacts ON.

It will take a few minutes to re-sync the contacts without duplicates.

If you also have duplicates in Calendar, go though the same process
... (Calendar instead of Contacts )

You might find you need to restart your iPhone for everything to appear again.

Gary, if I have misinterpreted your sync setup you are NOT syncing
contacts and calendar events over the air with your MobileMe account
on your iPhone also in iTunes sync, post back with more details.

I think you should check the output socket. It sounds as though it
is not properly resetting when you take the external line plug out.
Hence isolating the internal speaker.
It is generally the spring contact not properly reseating, due

First thing to do is upgrade to 10.4.11. This
at least will allow you run iLife 09 which
includes iPhoto 09. From the description of
Memory Manager, I can't see what it's doing
that iPhoto 09 is not. The latest iPhoto has
some sophisticated features such as Face
Recognition, Geotagging and excellent image
retouching and enhancing tools. All versions of
iPhoto (with the possible exception of the very
earliest versions) will allow you to assemble
your photos into presentation booklets.

I agree with Peter H. I had a quick look at
Memory Manager and cannot see that it does
anything that iPhoto doesn't do.

iPhoto '09 is much improved from iPhoto '06.

Well Gary, you can do it the long way like I did a few years ago.

Basically you need a camcorder (with DV IN/OUT) to record to from
the VHS, then import the footage into iMovie, edit it and then
import the edited movie into iDVD to make a DVD.snip

thanks to everyone's responces to my dilemma,

a fellow Architect in Chicago suggested that the new version V4.1
(universal), write to a different database setup to the older
version 3 ( PPC), so when I opened, reopened the file in the latest
version , it wasn't able save to the old database.
So its seems the leap from PPC to Universal has lead to some backward
file incompatibility.

Oh well, I re-did 2 days of work that I lost on the project- just
about all done now.

Time to move.

Thanks to all that replied and made suggestions

Just now I thought what if I open the app in my Test user account

activated via Fast User Switcher - got a Blue screen ,
Bugger
did a forced restart

then opened app saved a file reopened file, made a change - CRASHED
Bugger

so I sent a report to Apple and the Software suppliers.

Guess I just have to wipe off 2 full days of work and go back to a
properly working version.

Bugger.
looks like some lat night to catchup
Bugger

Hi Gary,

What Software Application did you update to v 4.1 Universal?

Its an architect orientated 3D Design software called BoA.

It started in 1996 as an offshoot of an app called Architrion - and
is an advanced sophisticated 3D solids modeler app. Version 2 was
released in about 2001. I took it up in 2003 version 2.4.6 and used
under OS 8.6/ 9.0 It required a Quickdraw 3D extension and printed
to postscript and written with MacApp. Evidently they were
developing some sophisticated 3D technology with Apple until Apple
pulled the pin and move onto OSX. This event seemed to slowed its
development quite a bit.

In late 2005 they released version 3, which could run under OS X via
Rosetta. all files were backwards compatible, in effect the software
didn't change at all- it maintained its basic functionality.

Then in late 2008 they issued a universal version to run natively
under OSX and written with XCode, but has numerous bugs. I was hoping
v 4.1 release would resolve some of the bugs but alas not fully yet.

This saving bug might just be my machine after all.

I ought to add that the developers are French, who seem to run a
different line to the rest of us!

Architosh.com has a few articles on BoA

I checked this on , my Macbook 10.5.6 using same version of software
when I open a file ( existing or new) and go to save it, it is kept
- ie works properly

any ideas whats going on?

I have a file which I worked a full day on, despite copy/paste to new
files, doing save as backup copy, non of the file data is kept?

I still have this file open and dare not close it case there is some
work around I have missed so that my efforts are kept.

This is off topic but its some pretty amazing computer animation
which I thought you might find fascinating

Just click on the link below, click on play,
then leave the mouse alone,
do not touch your mouse until it says: The End.
Sit back and enjoy a piece of creative brilliance.
We wonder who had time to do this.
